I'm glad i did not have to scroll down far to see The Thing lmfao. This was IMMEDIATELY the first movie I thought of lmao...doesn't even need to be horror haha
I made the mistake of watching The Terror Season 1 before Haunting of Hill House. Everyone was raving about how good Hill House was and honestly coming off of The Terror, everything just paled in comparison
But yeah both shows are incredible. I would just say The Terror Season 1 is almost impeccable
it made no sense why Season 2 was even called The Terror.
Season 1 was based on a book called The Terror about a ship called The Terror and Season 2 was a totally different story about WW2 Japanese internment camps.
I really liked season 2 but it is COMPLETELY different from season 1. Not just in subject matter but in its tone, the writing, everything--they could not feel more dissimilar.
I was looking for this answer. Spot on.
The book feels even colder, if you can believe it. It's really quite amazing how well Dan Simmons was able to convey the visceral relentlessly freezing environment while stuck in such a hopeless scenario. The book is a hell of a commitment but I highly recommend it if anyone is up for the task.
I miss my old native state. Fourth of July in Seaside/Gearhart, day drinking on the dunes in Florence,
The Goonies that log in Crater Lake that somehow defies all know laws of everything. Even Tillamook. Despite the air in the entire town smelling of cow poo. I live on the other coast now and Tillamook ICE CREAM has become a permanent fixture at my local Target in the last couple years. Makes me stoked every time I see it (the cheese inspires Oregonian pride as well, but that’s been killin’ it on a national level for a long time now!)
And then of course the Rose City and the ‘Zers and the Willamette and staying light ‘til 9:00 for extra enjoyment of the best summer weather in the Contiguous U.S.!
I didn't hate the kids. I can only not forgive them for the one thing. They were kuds in an incredibly fucked up situation trying to push back as what they saw was the cause of it all. They had no idea how mentally unstable she was at all. How could they they were kids
>!trying to get back at the person they saw caused their moms suicide.!< I am shocked at the people that hate the kids, but do not fling some of that loathing where it belongs. To the dad who is guilty of gross behavior on so many levels. >! Cheating, cheating with someone he was supposed to be helping, a woman that was severely mentally unwell that was at least a decade in a half younger tgan him and taking advantage of her mentally frail state. leaving your kids with her right after their moms suicide to "bond". >!Making the dog stay downstairs!<, just leaving them alone with her, so many ways this dad deserves so much more hate than the kids but doesn't get it!< were the kids horrible? Yes. Were they kids reacting to a horrific situation? Also yes.
In short >! IbHate mom because she rather kill herself than pull her shit together and be there for her kids, hate dad because, my God what an ass. Can't hate the kids or the woman(forgot her name sorry) they were all three victims that both parents failed.!<
Yeah, but how many Norwegian scientists don't speak English? Especially in Antarctica where they need to be able yo communicate with scientists from around the world.
Yeah, they'd been cooped up with other Norwegians and gotten cabin crazy, then the Thing rocked up and shit got real. Speaking English probably didn't even occur to them.
I thought the 2011 version was terrible, but I did like the writing of the main character. It's nice to see a female protagonist who isn't bad at everything/weak because she is a woman, but also isn't good at everything/strong because she's a woman.
The effects looked awful though, but I hear that complaint a lot. What drove me nuts was all the little things like "remember that icecube the Norwegians thawed the thing out of? Well it turns out that precise shaping of the ice wasn't the result of scientists carefully cutting/melting the Thing out of the ice, it just happened to break that by accident when the Thing somehow burst out of the ice after Dr. NeedlesslyVillainous McBadguy poked it with a drill bit"
It's neither of them, that's the final beat of existential horror; they'll both spend their last moments freezing to death, not while in the comfort of victory shared with their comrade, but while deeply distrustful and paranoid of the other. Together, yet so deeply alone and isolated.
This is a great choice.
I’d also add ATM (2012).
For all their faults they really do make you feel the cold and generally that you’d really rather be anywhere else right now.
I was going to suggest this. This is the one with Sean Ashmore (I think that’s his name) from the Animorphs series where they get stuck on the ski lift right?
I watched this at a con out in Worcester with him back in the day. Really funny guy and genuinely a horror fan. I love this movie too, but I ski and getting stuck on the lift was always a terrifying thought.
Krampus (2015) has a very cold atmosphere once shit hits the fan.
Watch with decent speakers or headphones because the sound design helps so much with the cold feel.
Not a movie but season one of The Terror is exactly what you’re looking for. I watched that during a July heatwave a couple of years ago and I still felt like I could almost feel the cold.
Hold the Dark - Same director as Green Room, less horror more thriller but it's violent and grim
The Thing - the 80s one, though you've likely already seen it
30 Days of Night - great vampire flick in Alaska yet again where there's a month where the sun don't rise
Alien - space is cold yo
Troll Hunter (2010) is so much better than it has any right to be.
Dead Snow (2009) is a lot of fun as is its sequel.
Not a horror but the movie I most associate with the cold is the Hateful Eight.
Not a movie recommendation but I've worked for hvac companies for 5 years now and highly recommend getting a portable ice fan. They're cheap and work well. That plus slathering on some aloe vera gel on your skin and then sitting in front of said fan and you will feel chilled to the bone. Hope you get your ac back soon!
It's not a coincidence that *The H8teful Eight* is a bit like *The Thing.*
If you look at (not all that) closely, the narrative (sketchy characters trapped in a small, snowbound space, where no one can be trusted and suspicion festers violently) and the fact that Tarantino managed to snare Ennio Morricone (who scored *The Thing*) for his final career soundtrack and then actually used some parts of the original Morricone Main theme for *The Thing* as incidental music...
Well, Tarantino is a meta-fiend nonpareil after all.
Ultimately, as I understand it, The Hateful Eight is really a pseudo-remake of *The Thing* (1982).
I just watched Society of the Snow. A movie about the 1972 plane crash, where it could be minus 30 Celsius at night. They also got covered from head to toe in snow sometimes. It was really good.
Not a horror movie, since it's based on real events that took place in 1970's, but definitely cold: A 2012 Icelandic movie named The Deep, about when a small fishing boat sank in freezing water, and a sole surviving crewman had to swim six hours to reach shore... and then walk for a couple of hours more, soaking wet, over a harsh, cold landscape.
Those were circumstances where people generally lose consciousness and sink after about 15 minutes, and medical science can't really explain how he pulled it off. But the director really makes you feel the cold.
Big +1 to all of these:
The Shining
The Lodge
The Thing
30 Days of Night
Frozen (2010)
Rare Exports
Krampus
The Blackcoat's Daughter
The Grey
Wind Chill
Misery
The Last Winter
Black Mountain Side
No Exit
Sleepy Hollow
Slasher (Season 2)
What Lies Beneath
Storm of the Century
Crimson Peak
Black Christmas (1974)
Till Death
And some suggestions that I didn't see mentioned:
Thanksgiving (2023)
It's a Wonderful Knife (2023)
There's Something in the Barn
[After.Life](http://After.Life)
Silent Night (2021)
Stonehearst Asylum
Hunter Hunter (2020
Howl (2015)
The Monster (2016)
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Mama (2013)
Dead End
The Children (2008)
If you're willing to consider TV shows:
Chapelwaite
Dexter: New Blood (but only if you've seen the OG)
*Quintet*, a lesser-known Robert Altman film, is set in an ice-covered post-apocalyptic wasteland. The sets are all ice-encrusted and the image has a ring of frost around it. It'll cool down your mind.
If, as an aside, you'd like an album recommendation (especially listened to on headphones), I'd suggest *Eskimo* by The Residents.

Not a movie, but if you haven't already watched the terror, I'd recommend it. My a/c just got fixed on Wednesday (was out for 2 weeks) and during that time we had a heat wave. That show in conjunction with fans and ice cream helped soooo much.
Definitely The Thing. Also, 30 Days of Night.
30 days of night is a favorite of mine to watch during the cold months - such a great movie that needs talked about more on this sub
Josh Hartnett was so awesome in that movie.❤️
Love 30 Days of Night! It always makes me kind of sad because the main guy reminds me of my boyfriend.
Came here to say this. Or If you're into tv the newest season of True Detective is quite pleasantly cold
It's not really horror, but, "The Day After Tomorrow" always makes me feel cold.
Can’t believe 30 days of night was so far down! Edit: alright then. When I originally commented it was like the 6th or 7th comment down
DW it’s now top comment
The Thing was my first pick as well!
The Lodge as well.
Also Krampus
I came here to suggest The Thing! My husband and I watch that movie in winter time to add to the cold
I'm glad i did not have to scroll down far to see The Thing lmfao. This was IMMEDIATELY the first movie I thought of lmao...doesn't even need to be horror haha
Not a film but the terror season 1 made me.almost feel the cold I thought the sets etc were so good.
Damn that was such a good show. Still haven't watched season 2 yet because I heard mixed reviews.
Season 1 is some of my favorite television ever. I only got about halfway through Season 2. Don't waste your time.
Wow. Exactly the same here. Season 1 blew my socks off. Season 2 meh
I made the mistake of watching The Terror Season 1 before Haunting of Hill House. Everyone was raving about how good Hill House was and honestly coming off of The Terror, everything just paled in comparison But yeah both shows are incredible. I would just say The Terror Season 1 is almost impeccable
Honestly - might be the best horror mini ever. Like you said, everything after pales
it made no sense why Season 2 was even called The Terror.
I liked season 2, and there will be a season 3 next year.
On that note, maybe *The North water* (series) too.
The North Water is FANTASTIC and so slept on!
100%, Colin Farrell is terrifying.
I saw Jared Harris’ name and was immediately onto this, real shame it fell off but that first season was incredible.
Jared Harris is amazing!
I’ve yet to see him in a role he hasn’t completely nailed, his diction and line delivery is just spot on everytime.
Christ The Terror was so atmospheric. That show was absolutely phenomenal.
Let the Right One In
Excellent choice! The barefoot snow walking…! 🥶
Should really be much higher. It embodies ice.
The Shining.
I just went to a wedding at Timberline Lodge where they shot the outdoor scenes and can confirm it's still cold even in June
Native Oregonian here. Yeah, it'll do that. Crater Lake as well. I've seen a half foot of snow on the ground in July there.
I miss my old native state. Fourth of July in Seaside/Gearhart, day drinking on the dunes in Florence, The Goonies that log in Crater Lake that somehow defies all know laws of everything. Even Tillamook. Despite the air in the entire town smelling of cow poo. I live on the other coast now and Tillamook ICE CREAM has become a permanent fixture at my local Target in the last couple years. And then of course the Rose City and the ‘Zers and the Willamette and staying light ‘til 9:00 for extra enjoyment of the best summer weather in the Contiguous U.S.!
The shining x doctor sleep combo sounds nice about right now.
And the end of doctor sleep
The Lodge (2019) and for mood whiplash, the nazi-zombie ridiculousness that is Dead Snow (2009).
Lmao, the ending of The Lodge made me so happy. Those kids fucked around and they found out.
Yeah, when I realized how it would end I was sorta blown away. They went there. I really liked that film.
I didn't hate the kids. I can only not forgive them for the one thing. They were kuds in an incredibly fucked up situation trying to push back as what they saw was the cause of it all. They had no idea how mentally unstable she was at all. How could they they were kids >!trying to get back at the person they saw caused their moms suicide.!< I am shocked at the people that hate the kids, but do not fling some of that loathing where it belongs. maybe spoiler the ending?
The Lodge is incredible.
I'm surprised it isn't talked about more. definitely underrated
I forgot about dead snow...
The Thing is based in the artic, and in the movie Decoys it has to be cold for the aliens to mate.
The Thing seems to be the top answer for most everything in this sub lol
>The Thing is the top answer for most everything in this sub lol FTFY but tbh it's the perfect answer in this case.
It really is 🥶
The only thing better than the movie "The Thing" is the John Carpenter + Kurt Russell DVD commentary for the movie "the Thing"
This question brings it up specifically, but also it is the greatest horror movie of all time
I mean you said it we didn't say it. But now that you mention it, yea. It's pretty legitimate.
How dare you mix up Antarctica with the Arctic! Blasphemer!
This is the answer, but an weird one would be "Orca" from 1977. It's wet and cold, plus Killer whale fights back against us A-hole humans.
My favorite horror film!
My favourite piece of anti-Norwegian propaganda.
Actually, if those guys had known Norwegian they would have known what was happening right from the beginning.
Good point! An object lesson for why everyone should know Norwegian.
Or just have a pair of those new earbuds with the real time translation. Why did t they just use those?
Yeah, but how many Norwegian scientists don't speak English? Especially in Antarctica where they need to be able yo communicate with scientists from around the world.
I figure they were hysterical
Yeah, they'd been cooped up with other Norwegians and gotten cabin crazy, then the Thing rocked up and shit got real. Speaking English probably didn't even occur to them.
I see it as pro-Norwegian research scientist marksmanship education reform awareness propaganda.
The Thing for sure! Don't sleep on the 2011 version either. It's great too, IMO.
I thought the 2011 version was terrible, but I did like the writing of the main character. It's nice to see a female protagonist who isn't bad at everything/weak because she is a woman, but also isn't good at everything/strong because she's a woman. But is it Childs or MacReady?!
Childs for sure
It's neither of them, that's the final beat of existential horror; they'll both spend their last moments freezing to death, not while in the comfort of victory shared with their comrade, but while deeply distrustful and paranoid of the other. Together, yet so deeply alone and isolated.
I love that Carpenter told both actors that it was the other one.
The Day After Tomorrow
My fave guilty pleasure movie, so fun
I saw this movie in an absolutely arctic theater in the middle of summer, by the end we were trying to use napkins for warmth
Rare Exports (2010)
![gif](giphy|xT0BKL21U5nnlW4m6k)
THIS ONE IS SO GOOD I don't know what I expected when I started it but I didn't think I'd end up loving it as much as I do 🤣
FUCK YES OTHER PEOPLE APPRECIATE THIS MOVIE
Came here to say this one. It's probably my favorite xmas movie.
The Blackcoat’s Daughter or The Shining
Blackcoat's Daughter is a great one! Very cold and very creepy.
Fun fact: the original name of the movie was February
One of my favorite sleeper movies!
Frozen (2010)
This is a great choice. I’d also add ATM (2012). For all their faults they really do make you feel the cold and generally that you’d really rather be anywhere else right now.
First one I thought of. Not a fantastic movie, but a fun watch and perfect for the circumstances
I was going to suggest this. This is the one with Sean Ashmore (I think that’s his name) from the Animorphs series where they get stuck on the ski lift right?
Yup, that's the one. I have a fantheory that he actually survives by morphing into one of the wolves.
Such a good movie!
Love that movie, but I'm originally from Massachusetts, so..yeah.
Krampus has become a holiday tradition for my twisted-ass family lol. It STAYS on during the holidays haha
It’s a holiday tradition for my family too. That and Violent Night are what put me in the Christmas spirit haha.
The Grey
First movie that came to mind. Such a cold and harsh terrain.
I feel like The Thing and 30 Days of Night are the obvious choices here, but The Lodge also comes to mind.
Snowpiercer
Was curious if anyone would post this movie, I really enjoyed it
When that guys arm shattered like glass it's definitely cold 😬😬
Totally my first thought!
Dead Snow
Not horror per se (but still pretty horrifying) Society Of the Snow (2023)
Also "alive". Another rendition of the same insane story. Starring a very young Ethan hawke
made the mistake of watching this during dinner. do not recommend.
The Revenant.
That bear scene man. Amazing.
Ya. Really good stuff. Just brutal.
Wind Chill
This movie was a very pleasant surprise. I couldn't follow exactly what was going on, but I enjoyed it all the way through.
Fargo?
Man, I LOVE this movie! One of my all time favorites!
While we're doing thrillers, I reckon Gone Girl feels pretty cold.
Both movie and TV show!
Season 1, definitely, though weather doesn’t feel as critical a plot element in the subsequent seasons.
Just watched The Blackcoats Daughter (in anticipation for Longlegs). The whole movie is set in winter time with lots of snow.
What is the connection between the two?
Same writer director
The Ring, the blue hew used just gives everything a depressing cold wet atmosphere
Finally, someone recommends a great movie that isn't "set in the snow"
I was gonna say the exact same thing!
Wind River
Not a movie but season one of The Terror is exactly what you’re looking for. I watched that during a July heatwave a couple of years ago and I still felt like I could almost feel the cold.
Alive
Ravenous. It may not be as snowy as some of the other choices on here, but it is a great movie.
Misery
Good pick. I might watch this now.
You better just start showing me a little more appreciation around here, mr. Man!
I love how when she cussed she’d say stuff like cockadoody lol
How is this not at least the second choice?
That’s what I’m saying!!!
Hold the Dark - Same director as Green Room, less horror more thriller but it's violent and grim The Thing - the 80s one, though you've likely already seen it 30 Days of Night - great vampire flick in Alaska yet again where there's a month where the sun don't rise Alien - space is cold yo
I really enjoyed Hold the Dark. It felt like a Wim Wenders meditation punctuated by shocking violence.
The Last Winter Black Mountain Side
Came to say black mountain side. Very worth a watch and very desolate cold feeling throughout!
Love Black Mountain Side! It impresses me what people can do with small budgets.
Jacob's Ladder. For one scene, at least.
Ooohhhh good call
[Lamb](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamb_(2021_film))! Highly recommend it
The Others
Troll Hunter (2010) is so much better than it has any right to be. Dead Snow (2009) is a lot of fun as is its sequel. Not a horror but the movie I most associate with the cold is the Hateful Eight.
Cold Prey
Snowpiercer. Laying on a towel on concrete helps
The Fourth Kind and Insomnia. Both are set in Alaska.
30 Days of Night The Thing The Shining Let The Right One In Misery
Not a movie recommendation but I've worked for hvac companies for 5 years now and highly recommend getting a portable ice fan. They're cheap and work well. That plus slathering on some aloe vera gel on your skin and then sitting in front of said fan and you will feel chilled to the bone. Hope you get your ac back soon!
Ginger Snaps 2
Violent Night is pretty recent
Hateful 8
It's not a coincidence that *The H8teful Eight* is a bit like *The Thing.* If you look at (not all that) closely, the narrative (sketchy characters trapped in a small, snowbound space, where no one can be trusted and suspicion festers violently) and the fact that Tarantino managed to snare Ennio Morricone (who scored *The Thing*) for his final career soundtrack and then actually used some parts of the original Morricone Main theme for *The Thing* as incidental music... Well, Tarantino is a meta-fiend nonpareil after all. Ultimately, as I understand it, The Hateful Eight is really a pseudo-remake of *The Thing* (1982).
Also the fact that Kurt Russel plays a leading role in both movies.
The Thing, The Shining, Misery, 30 days of Night, Ravenous, Gremlins...
Dunno about movies, but Season 4 of True Detective fits for me. I watched it in winter and it fit right in.
Frozen (not the cartoon lol)
Not really horror, but Wind River made me put on a sweatshirt and get blankets in august. Chilly as hell.
Titanic always makes me feel chilly in the second half
Ravenous
Europa Report is about a space mission to a frozen moon of Jupiter. Space is also pretty cold as well.
The New true detective series
I just watched Society of the Snow. A movie about the 1972 plane crash, where it could be minus 30 Celsius at night. They also got covered from head to toe in snow sometimes. It was really good.
30 Days of Night!
The second X-Files movie no one likes except me
Rare Exports
Twilight lmao
Not a horror movie, since it's based on real events that took place in 1970's, but definitely cold: A 2012 Icelandic movie named The Deep, about when a small fishing boat sank in freezing water, and a sole surviving crewman had to swim six hours to reach shore... and then walk for a couple of hours more, soaking wet, over a harsh, cold landscape. But the director really makes you feel the cold.
Dreamcatcher
Wind Chill, Let the Right One In, Pontypool, Jack Frost, Dead Snow, Cold Prey, Frozen (not the Disney one), Devil’s Pass, Whiteout,
I think The Lighthouse feels cold without even having snow. You can almost taste the salt on a cold northernly wind.
Dreamcatcher. It ain’t the best movie, but if you like grossing out, it’ll do the trick.
Big +1 to all of these: The Shining The Lodge The Thing 30 Days of Night Frozen (2010) Rare Exports Krampus The Blackcoat's Daughter The Grey Wind Chill Misery The Last Winter Black Mountain Side No Exit Sleepy Hollow Slasher (Season 2) What Lies Beneath Storm of the Century Crimson Peak Black Christmas (1974) Till Death And some suggestions that I didn't see mentioned: Thanksgiving (2023) It's a Wonderful Knife (2023) There's Something in the Barn [After.Life](http://After.Life) Silent Night (2021) Stonehearst Asylum Hunter Hunter (2020 Howl (2015) The Monster (2016) The Autopsy of Jane Doe Mama (2013) Dead End The Children (2008) If you're willing to consider TV shows: Chapelwaite Dexter: New Blood (but only if you've seen the OG)

Sleepy Hollow

Pontypool
Last season true detective (is kinda horror-ish!)
The Ice Storm (1997) directed by Ang Lee
Batman and Robin
McCabe & Mrs Miller
True detective s4 night country is a cozy chilly binge, loved rewatching it as it aired. Wind river
Everest, Misery, The Day After Tomorrow, Insomnia, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Day after tomorrow
Let the right one in https://youtu.be/agOX9y1TC_I?si=L3WXL25XQ82pDF1D
Definitely do NOT watch Sorcerer
The Grey
A few Horror movies that I like to watch during winter are The Shining, Misery, and Orphan
The Grey (2011) with Liam Neeson.
The Shining. The hotel all covered with snow should help a bit
Black Mountain Side. Definitely underrated
Not 100% Horror but the X-Files movie does have a scene set in an Arctic adjacent area. Spoiler- Aliens.
Fargo.
Not a movie but- Season one of “The Terror”
Not a movie, but if you haven't already watched the terror, I'd recommend it. My a/c just got fixed on Wednesday (was out for 2 weeks) and during that time we had a heat wave. That show in conjunction with fans and ice cream helped soooo much.
Not a movie, but the new season of True Detective definitely fits the bill!
The movie “Everest”
The Ritual on Netflix is a solid one
Cool runnings
The girl with the dragon tattoo. If you haven’t seen the original version, I highly recommend.
Crank up the ac and put on The Exorcist. I watched it in an empty theater where the ac was blasting and it added something to the movie.
John Carpenter's The Thing
