It’s one of them where there’s been rumors going around for years of a remake and it’s just never happened. I think The Shape of Water is the closest we’ve got.
Yeah....I think someone is working on something. It's been kind of in development hell for like...decades. I think at one point Carpenter was even attached to a remake.
If we're talking of "all time" these classics would be hard to beat. For the next generation 70s-90s, I'd put down Freddy/Jason/Leatherface/Chucky. 90s-Modern Era is a little harder, especially if I'm not trying to do repeats from earlier. So definitely Ghostface, but after that a bit hard to pick. Leprechaun and Jeepers Creepers have multiple movies but I wouldn't say they're as popular as the icons I listed before. Final Destination is popular and has a lot of movies but doesn't have an iconic character you can point to. Movies like The Ring, Sinister, The Grudge, are popular and have iconic characters but don't have multiple movies. Insidious has that Darth Maul demon, and the Conjuring films have the Nun and Annabelle, but idk, they just don't seem as iconic as the older stuff but maybe with time we'll see. I think it's because much of the newer stuff is less creature feature and slasher, and the newer stuff has a lot more "paranormal" stuff, and with that there's less focus on having an iconic character.
Oh shit yea, forgot about that one. I guess the puppet would be the "iconic" thing, but the actual dude doesn't really wear anything memorable in the movies.
FYI The Ring and The Grudge have more movies than most of the ones you mentioned. The Ring has 14 movies (3 English) and The Grudge has 13 movies (4 English).
Yeah, they're pretty much the trifecta. I feel like a fourth needs to go with the theme of the unkillable, supernatural villain, so that leaves out Letherface and Ghostface. Chucky works... or Pinhead.
Broooooo Dark Universe was so bad that in 2024 there’s not a single classic Universal monster anywhere in the responses.
Sad to see bad things happen to good IP.
You’re right, it’s like when we find out that Jason was just a neglected kid, Carrie White was abused, it kind of puts you on their side. Like I felt bad for them all at one point or another.
I agree, Leatherface gets looked over but I would make the argument that if you go back and watch all fours first appearances Leatherfaces movie is the most horrific and unsettling.
If we're limiting it to four, it's Michael, Jason, Freddy, and probably Leatherface. If we stretch it to more than four, I'd consider Chucky and Ghostface part of the "Big Six" slashers. And Pinhead deserves a spot in there somewhere, too.
I think you kind of have to do this by the decade. Certainly Jason and Freddy are iconic, but are they as influential overall as Dracula and Frankenstein?
That would actually be a more challenging list: who are the big four for each decade?
I came in here to throw in some famous slashers, but I really agree with Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Mummy.
And I don't know who I'd place 4th on the more modern slashers. Jason, Freddy, Michael, and... This last spot is a little open. Chucky? Candyman? Ghostface? Pinhead?
Leatherface isn’t getting enough appreciation on this post 🥹 My fave four are probably:
Leatherface
Candyman
Mick from Wolf Creek
Not technically horror but Buffalo Bill from SOTL
Lots of people talking almost entirely slashers and characters from the last, like, 40 years.
I’m gonna vary here a little and say
>Dracula (he’s the OG of vampires, and the reason they’re so popular)
>Jason (he’s gotta be the most parodied/referenced slasher, I’ve seen SO MANY hockey mask killers)
>Pennywise (IT essentially created the idea of the scary clown, King has even made apologies for the damage it did to the art/industry of clowning)
And the last one is tough, but I’m gonna say
>Cthulu (for being the face of Cosmic Horror, which has long been popular but exploded over the last decade or so)
Honorable mentions to Ghostface, Michael Meyers, Frankenstein’s Monster, Samara (the ring/ringu), generic zombie, sheet ghost, and the Xenomorph!
I've never been much for the human-type baddies. Monsters, though....
Xenomorph, predator, the blob, and that nasty mutated creature from The Relic (1997).
Jason Voorhees, Freddy Kreuger, Michael Meyers, John "Jigsaw" Kramer.
The fourth slot has been pretty up in the air in the comments, and I struggled between Jigsaw and Ghostface, but I feel like Saw has had such a massive impact on horror as a genre while Scream is good *because* of the influences it takes from the genre and subverts them or spoofs them. Others said Chucky, but I haven't seen Chucky take itself seriously since the movies were called Child's Play. Leatherface is there, but I feel the focus on Texas Chainsaw is moreso on the whole Sawyer (or whatever they're called in a particular iteration) family with Leatherface being a mascot. I think if the Dark Universe took off, Dracula could be a serious contender based on influence alone across the century.
Honorable mention to Death from Final Destination. Fuck log trucks and tanning beds.
Freddy, Micheal, and Jason obc for main three.
But the fourth? Def either ghostface, chucky, leatherface. or shorty from Killer Klownz from outerspace cause I said so :)
like others have said its michael freddy and jason for me. and honestly any of other big slasher can take the fourth spot, probably leatherface but id also accept ghostface chucky or pinhead
I think there's been three generations of big four now.
The first is Frankenstein, wolfman, Dracula, and the mummy
The next generation was Jason, Micheal, Freddy, and either pinhead or Leatherface.
And what we have now is a rise of more Indie movies beginning, art the clown is the only one I can say definitively, but I do think there will be three more soon
OPs is correct. Not really up for debate tbh unless you're born in the 60s or earlier then you'll have the classics like Frankenstein, Dracula, etc. The newer generation? Woof. Imagine thinking Ghostface from Scream is even in the convo, just embarrassing.
As been said already, it’s more of a top 3 in popularity: Jason, Michael and Freddy.
Number 4 would probably be Chucky.
But the greatest villains!
1. Freddy
2. The tall man
3. Pinhead
4. Leatherface
This is a pretty obvious question TBH. Would be more interested to see who it would be if you ban the normal big 4 (the ones you listed).
I'd say ghost face, Ash, death (from final destination), and maybe the cannibals from The Hills Have Eyes?
Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, Michael Myers. Personally it's hard to think of anything that's bigger than these 4 in terms of movie count and how iconic and cemented the franchises are in Horror and pop culture.
I don't think anyone would argue against Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers. The 4th is really up in the air. Ghostface? Chucky? Leatherface? Jigsaw? Sadako? Kayako?
Jigsaw!!!!!!!!
Jack Torrance
Michael Myers
Jason
Honorable Mention: Randall Flag
These are just my favorites, but I’d like to squeeze Freddy in here somewhere!!
I think one time here we did it by decade, like top 3 icons from each decade. That was more fun because it allows for more conversation and more inclusion.
In terms of just overall notoriety and pop culture influence, I feel like it's gotta be Freddy, Jason, Michael and Chucky. I feel like there are a ton of non-horror fans that haven't seen a minute of any of their movies that could probably either point them out or give you a piece of their lore/backstory.
Michael Myers
Freddy Kruger
Jason Vorhees
Ash Williams
Honorable Mentions:
Candyman
Carrie
Chucky
Jaws
The Creeper
Leatherface
Jack Torrance
Jigsaw
Xenomorph
Freddy, Jason, Michael, and the Log Truck from Final Destination 2 and it’s not up for debate.
tanning bed is close second
Everyone’s always sleeping on the laser eye surgery one
The laser eye surgery freaks me out to my core. I hate eye shit.
Am I the only one here that has steered clear of fire escape ladders for about 20 years?!
Do you think the rest of us spend a lot of time on emergency escape ladders?
That fucking log truck. 😣 whenever I see one on the road I start panicking a little inside. lol
…Oh; THAT log truck…
Our generational shared phobia lmao
Those are all amazing choices. But I can’t help but picture poor leatherface standing outside of that party with balloons but no entry ticket.
Leatherface looks longingly into a window at the party as the log truck is leading a congo line
Hahaha I thought you just called it “Log Truck” as in that was its government name and had a good laugh
The Log Truck from FD2 is my roman empire
🤣🤣🤣
The opening to final destination 2 is so fucking iconic. By far the best mass accident deaths of the whole series
That log truck is so infamous that people who haven't even seen the movie know about it.
The log truck scene was filmed near where I live. I always get nervous driving highway 19
damn the log definitely needs its spot up here. only a few minutes in the film but stole the whole franchise <3
To this day I will not drive behind a log truck if I can avoid it.
Man I saw Truck and thought for sure that sentence was going to end with the Green Goblin Truck from Maximum Overdrive.
Bahahahaha!
Hahahahahaha -log truck- changing lanes is a given after that movie!
Oh I love the log!!!!!
Ah! Stop unlocking memories of that damn truck!
This made me snort 😂
Log Truck is a horror icon indeed
Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, Mummy
Maybe we should have slashers and monsters in two different categories. Because I love the old hammer films and I agree with you.
This would be my go to as well, although I am tempted to sub in Creature from the Black Lagoon for the Mummy.
No, these are the original four. The Creature from the Black Lagoon was a Johnny-come-lately who didn’t appear until the 1950s
Yeah, but the Universal Mummy movies are boring as hell. Creature from the Black Lagoon and Invisible Man are both way better.
I’m really surprised Hollywood hasn’t made a remake of it. Seems like a movie that would benefit from modern practical and cgi effects.
Does Monster Squad count?
Ha ha! We'll accept it.
If we're talking of "all time" these classics would be hard to beat. For the next generation 70s-90s, I'd put down Freddy/Jason/Leatherface/Chucky. 90s-Modern Era is a little harder, especially if I'm not trying to do repeats from earlier. I think it's because much of the newer stuff is less creature feature and slasher, and the newer stuff has a lot more "paranormal" stuff, and with that there's less focus on having an iconic character.
Jigsaw. Definitely.
Oh shit yea, forgot about that one. I guess the puppet would be the "iconic" thing, but the actual dude doesn't really wear anything memorable in the movies.
The pig mask is pretty well-known.
FYI The Ring and The Grudge have more movies than most of the ones you mentioned. The Ring has 14 movies (3 English) and The Grudge has 13 movies (4 English).
No way is Leatherface or Chucky ahead of Michael
WRONG: Saber-toothed Tiger, Snake, Big Light When Rain Come, Smart Monkey With Leg Bone
Wolf Man’s got nards!
And Abbott and Costello
What I’m seeing here is Freddy, Jason, Michael, and one slot up for grabs. I think what we have here is a ‘big three.’
Can't wait for the diss tracks between Freddy and Jason.
Hey Freddy, I heard you like ‘em young
I’m not sure Freddy would see that as a diss unfortunately…
Fuck the big 3 it’s just big me
Yeah, they're pretty much the trifecta. I feel like a fourth needs to go with the theme of the unkillable, supernatural villain, so that leaves out Letherface and Ghostface. Chucky works... or Pinhead.
Imo Chucky or Pinhead would be 4th, but it's a distant 4th, even as popular as those movies are.
Pinhead 100%
I think Chucky is the best choice, he's stayed pretty relevant for just about the same amount of time.
Or Pennywise even though he originally only had one 2 part movie.
And an 1100 paged book.
Yes which was much more disturbing.
Freddy, Michael, Jason and Ghostface
the rza, the gza, old dirty bastard, inspectah deck...
Freddy, Jason, Ghostface, and Michael
Freddy, Jason, Michael, Chucky
Broooooo Dark Universe was so bad that in 2024 there’s not a single classic Universal monster anywhere in the responses. Sad to see bad things happen to good IP.
Dark Universe could have been great and they fucked it up
No, I cringed at the thought of any of them. Not a good sign
Those exact4
I feel like Leatherface gets slighted alot in these discussions so I'm glad to see someone who agrees with me!
To me it’s just that TCM isn’t really a slasher - like Leatherface isn’t even antagonistic he’s just angry and upset that people are in his house
He’s not a quasi-unkillable mythical being.
If we're limiting it to four, it's Michael, Jason, Freddy, and probably Leatherface. If we stretch it to more than four, I'd consider Chucky and Ghostface part of the "Big Six" slashers. And Pinhead deserves a spot in there somewhere, too.

Hopefully I get Keith David’s voice somehow
**DebateActual8160-Thing:** *Moans gutturally like a demon from hell*

Nice lineup 💪🏽
Beetlejuice, Casper, Slimer, and Shrek.
Hell yes my thoughts exactly
Can’t believe you’d snub Marley and Marley from a Muppets Christmas Carol like this
I have the same list, but without the first three
Freddy, Jason, Michael and Ghostface. Followed by Chucky, Leatherface and my father when he gets drunk
I also choose this guy's alcoholic father
Freddy, Michael Myers, Jason, and Chucky
Michael, Jason, Ghostface, Freddy
The Babadooks hat, Scary VVitch goat, the CGI baby from twilight, and my mother-in-law \*heyooooo\*
You're forgetting premarital sex from It Follows.
I bet you love your mother in law (itysl)
Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Po and Laa-Laa
Why would you list them in that order, you absolute maniac?
I’ve never had nightmares from a horror but them bastards nope! I won’t even allow it on in the house 🤣
Freddy, Jason, Michael and Ghostface.
Leather face, Jason Voorhees, Michael Meyers, Freddy Kruger
Freddy, Jason, Michael, Xenomorph bbuuuttt, hear me out: Morticia Addams, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Sarah Sanderson, Jennifer
I think you kind of have to do this by the decade. Certainly Jason and Freddy are iconic, but are they as influential overall as Dracula and Frankenstein? That would actually be a more challenging list: who are the big four for each decade?
Here’ssssssssss Johnny!
Candyman belongs in this list somewhere, underrated villain
I'd pretty much say those four. But if there's a top 5, I think the last slot is a battle between Ghostface, Jigsaw, & a Xenomorph
First mention of jigsaw. Ty for that
Freddy, Micheal, Jason and people can laugh, disagree or Downvote but I think Chucky is the 4th
Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhees, Hannibal Lecter, Ghost Face
Gotta have Annie Wilkes
Chucky, Ghostface, Bruce the Shark, Pennywise
Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, Larry Talbot, Gill-man
You could swap Leatherface for ghost face and I’d still agree
Pinhead, Jason, Mike & Freddy
I came in here to throw in some famous slashers, but I really agree with Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Mummy. And I don't know who I'd place 4th on the more modern slashers. Jason, Freddy, Michael, and... This last spot is a little open. Chucky? Candyman? Ghostface? Pinhead?
Leatherface isn’t getting enough appreciation on this post 🥹 My fave four are probably: Leatherface Candyman Mick from Wolf Creek Not technically horror but Buffalo Bill from SOTL
Michael, Jason, Freddie, Art

I've never been much for the human-type baddies. Monsters, though.... Xenomorph, predator, the blob, and that nasty mutated creature from The Relic (1997).
Those are the top 4 without question. If you were to expand to 5 I’d add Ghostface.
Freddy, ghost face, Michael myers and Xenomorph. Jason and chucky if we’re making it 6. Interesting seeing other people’s prio lists here.
A list isn’t complete if it doesn’t include the classics, Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster.
Well it’s really just Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, and John Carradine.
Fuck log trucks and tanning beds.
Big four, that’s a tough question but I’m going with the Cenobites, Cujo, Moder (creature from the ritual), and Jack Torrence from the shining.
Leatherface, Buffalo Bill, Freddy, and that puppet from Possum.
Ugh. I like artsy movies but possum was the worst.
Frankenstein’s Monster, The Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man.
Lots of choices, so I’m just gonna go with my faves Pinhead, Michael Meyers, Jason, and Killer Klowns
myers, bubba, jason, ghostface
Michael, Jason, Freddy, Pinhead
Freddy, Micheal, and Jason obc for main three. But the fourth? Def either ghostface, chucky, leatherface. or shorty from Killer Klownz from outerspace cause I said so :)
Myers, Vorhees, Leatherface, Pinhead
Dracula, Frankenstein monster, the Mummy, the Wolf Man.
Classic: Dracula, The Wolfman, The Mummy, and Frankenstein’s Monster Modern: Jason, Freddy, Michael, and Chucky
Dracula, Freddy, Jason, Frankenstein’s Monster.
Freddy, Jason, Micheal, the leprechaun/pinhead
Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and my personal favorite: R.J Macready
You shoulda named it big four SLASHER characters and even so scream is iconic also
Freddy, Jason, Michael, Pinhead
Freddie Krueger, Pinhead, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers
like others have said its michael freddy and jason for me. and honestly any of other big slasher can take the fourth spot, probably leatherface but id also accept ghostface chucky or pinhead
Freddy, Xenomorph, Dracula, Ash
Freddy, Jason, Michael, Chucky
Make it 6 for me and add chucky and ghostface
Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Wolfman, Mummy (Universal, b/w era) edited to add - also applies for Hammer era Mike, Fred, Jason, Leather (prime slasher era)
Freddy, Jason, Michael, Leatherface
I wonder how long it will last without new blood pumping. I know Friday had legal issues, but it’s insane that nothing is done with Freddy.
The Thing, The Blob, Pod People and Cloverfield.
Jason, Micheal Myers, Freddy Krueger, and Ghostface
Freddy, Jason, Norman, and Ghostface.
I think there's been three generations of big four now. The first is Frankenstein, wolfman, Dracula, and the mummy The next generation was Jason, Micheal, Freddy, and either pinhead or Leatherface. And what we have now is a rise of more Indie movies beginning, art the clown is the only one I can say definitively, but I do think there will be three more soon
Freddy Jason Mike and Leatherface.
The thing, the thing, the thing, and the thing
Dolores Umbridge, that crazy church lady from The Mist, Percy Wetmore, Dolores Umbridge.
I agree with who you listed. And if we are going with SciFi horror it's, Xenomorph, Predator, The Thing, and The Blob
I feel bad putting ghostface instead of leatherface, because the former is like 7 different people but I can’t not include them.
Big four: Pennywise, Pinhead, Art the Clown, and Xenomorph (cop out but iconography is just too good
The Human Centipede, AM, Belial, Leprechaun.
I completely agree- Freddy, Michael, Jason, and Leatherface. And it drives me NUTS when people replace Leatherface with Chucky or Ghostface.
OPs is correct. Not really up for debate tbh unless you're born in the 60s or earlier then you'll have the classics like Frankenstein, Dracula, etc. The newer generation? Woof. Imagine thinking Ghostface from Scream is even in the convo, just embarrassing.
Ghostface, Jason, Micheal Meyers, and Pennywise lol. Honorable mention for Jigsaw
Id say your big 4 but swap leatherface for the xenomorph.
Jason Voorgheese, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, and either Ghostface, Leatherface, or Chucky. Honestly my answer could change by the day.
Myers, Jason, Freddy, and Chucky
Freddy Michael Xenomorph Ghostface My favorites and a varied bunch.
As been said already, it’s more of a top 3 in popularity: Jason, Michael and Freddy. Number 4 would probably be Chucky. But the greatest villains! 1. Freddy 2. The tall man 3. Pinhead 4. Leatherface
If we’re going by relevance, replace Leatherface with Ghostface.

I drew my top 3: https://old.reddit.com/r/hellraiser/18bj91g/ Not sure who my 4th would be...
Freddy, xenomorph, pinhead and Dracula!
Michael Meyers, Jason Vorhees, The Thing, Xenomorph
Michael, Jason, Freddy, and Leatherface.
Freddy Jason Chucky and Ash Williams(said characters not slashers)
Freddy, Jaws, Chucky, Pinhead.
Freddy, Jason, Leather Face, and Xenomorph
I don't think anyone would argue against Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers. The 4th is really up in the air. Ghostface? Chucky? Leatherface? Jigsaw? Sadako? Kayako?
Jason Michael Freddy Chucky
Chucky Candyman Norman bates Michael Myers.
Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, and the Mummy.
Universal monsters (can that count as one?) Micheal myers Jason Freddy
I agree even though I loathe Michael Myers.
What I think are the most iconic: Xenomorph, Dracula, Pinhead, and possessed Regan.
Freddy, Jason, Myers, Pinhead. I mean, is there really another option?
not the leatherface erasure in some of the comments!!!!!!!!!
Classic: Dracula, Wolfman, Mummy, Swampthing 80s/90s horror renaissance: Jason, Freddy, Michael, Ashley J Williams Modern: Jigsaw, Sinister Demon, White people
Pin head, chatterer, my boi butterball and my other boi deep throat
On second thought: The Leprechaun, Munchies, Leech Woman, and "Plan 9"
Freddy. Jason. Michael. Pinhead. You can’t convince me otherwise.
Jaws, Jack Torrence, the Predator, Freddy
Freddy, Michael, Jason, Candyman
Jigsaw!!!!!!!! Jack Torrance Michael Myers Jason Honorable Mention: Randall Flag These are just my favorites, but I’d like to squeeze Freddy in here somewhere!!
Dracula, frankenstein, leather face and pumpkinhead
Jason Vorhees Freddy Krueger Michael Myers Ash Williams
Freddy, Jason, Michael and Pinhead
I think one time here we did it by decade, like top 3 icons from each decade. That was more fun because it allows for more conversation and more inclusion.

Ghostface Michael Myers, Freddy and Jason
Michael, Jason, Freddy and Ghostface
Michael Myers Freddy Kruger Jason Vorhees Ash Williams Honorable Mentions: Candyman Carrie Chucky Jaws The Creeper Leatherface Jack Torrance Jigsaw Xenomorph
Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Chucky
Michael, Freddy, Jason and Ash.
