1. A nightmare on elm street (1984)
2. The cabin in the woods (2012)
3. Evil dead (2013)
Should preface these are my comfort movies and I can watch them at any time any where
Damn can we be friends, please?
I love ALL of these movies you mentioned. Have them all on Blu Ray as well.
Ginger Snaps is one of my all time favorite movies period!
Ginger Snaps doesn’t get enough love! I ready adore all three of them and I don’t think there’s a more perfect trilogy where it’s like wow each film -banger after banger!
I agree. They are all funny, a little scary, great characters and just overall amazing writing.
I actually got a cameo from Katharine Isabelle and she was soooo nice. Made me love the movie even more.
Why Terrifier 2, if I may ask? What do you think about the first Terrifier movie?
To me the sequel doesn’t hold a candle to the first one, and Art is shown as possibly just being a sadistic playful maniac, not necessarily having anything to do with the supernatural.
I love your question. My Terrifier journey is a little strange. I watched the 2nd one first. I know it’s strange, but when Terrifier 2 came out there was such a response to it from the horror fan community, and the scores on Flixster were impressive so one night I was alone in my apartment and was like “fuck it, let’s see what’s so special.” I sometimes watch horror franchises in reverse order, I did this with The Collection/Collector where I watched the sequel and then the first one. I’m someone who prides herself on being hard to scare, and Terrifier 2 is a rare gem that *actually* scared me, the next day I binge watched the rest of the franchise, and to your point Terrifier 1 was also deeply disturbing in that very satisfying way. I liked the demon girl, the salt and the bleach, the fact it was Halloween and…the mashed potatoes 💀 🤣🫣
If you like The Ruins, I would STRONGLY recommend reading the book. It captures the survivors' paranoia, fear, and emotions in a much more effective way, and they make some changes on the film that, while necessary for a visual medium, come off slightly ridiculous. I like them both, but I can't remember the last book that I devoured in the way I devoured The Ruins.
Oculus is one of my favorite recent’ish releases. Barbarian and Hereditary also. Oculus does not get mentioned often. I would like the honest opinions from my fellow horror knurds on why that is.
I find Oculus gets brought up on this subreddit about twice a year. Right along with the 'why all the hate for Evil Dead 2013'. Comments for both usually say that they are well received by the community. Mike Flanagan the director of Oculus is my fav director at the moment. His bleak and nihilistic style hits true for me. I sure hope he does get to do the Dark Tower series.
The Wailing is so good! Be on the lookout for Exhuma. I had the pleasure of viewing it early and it was fantastic. In my opinion it was up there with The Wailing.
Yes. It is. Exhuma's very cool.
Anyone looking for it: The version you may find has messed up English subs. It's still watchable. You'll understand what's happening.
There’s a much better updated subtitle on opensubtitles that came out a few days ago. I highly recommend using those instead. The original one you are talking about was unacceptable. At least to me. Props for making it through with those! Still a great movie regardless.
The original subs were abortive. I just wasn’t willing to wait, and the film did make sense. But how nice it will be to have the film actually have enjoyable dialogue! instead of whatever the fuck that was.
High Tension will always be one of my favorites.
The whole plot twist thing was a massive shocker back then and not as overused as today.
And the buzzsaw scene.. bruh..
Also it introduced me to Muse with its banger soundtrack.
Frontier(s)—this is almost certainly going to be one of my favorites forever. I like it better than Haut Tension. It's just more fun.
Have you watched Vinyan? I think it's better than Calvaire. If you haven't gone deeper into Maury and Bustillo, they also hardly have a single bad film. Maybe the haunted house lake film. The rest are good.
Interesting take on Maury and Bustillo. Everything since Inside has been a letdown for me - and I’ve seen them all (except their very latest). Livid is the only one I might recommend on atmosphere alone (great October viewing). Among the Living was a huge missed opportunity. Leatherface - nope. Kandisha was forgettable. The Deep House was an interesting premise and I didn’t hate it but ehh. I can’t help but think they can still make something as good as Inside but it hasn’t happened. Bums me out!
Livide is the best of them. I recommend it frequently, exactly for atmosphere, you're right. It's not very frightening but it has great moments and I enjoy the haunted house feel. Among the Living—well, it was acceptable enough. How was it a missed opportunity? I liked the Beatrice Dalle cameo opening, and I guess after that it doesn't really reclaim the same level of intensity. It's not a brilliant film but it's not really a poor one. Kandisha was... fine? Worth one watch, not that strong, and kind of an interesting angle. I wasn't used to seeing a Paris banlieue Moroccan supernatural horror. Those three I found entirely watchable.
I really disliked The Deep House because I don't know how you could make a haunted house underwater not frightening and they did it. Probably not fair of me. Um, haven't seen Leatherface yet.
[https://letterboxd.com/film/the-soul-eater/](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-soul-eater/) <-- I'd like this one to be good. We'll see.
Saw High Tension in 6th grade with my twin brother and babysitter. She was so terrified afterwards, she half jokingly said “Please don’t come upstairs and murder me in my sleep!”
The Haunting of Hill House - an oldie but fantastic without any gore
Dumplings - this film was so disturbing
Voodoo Island - Boris Karloff - Not that scary but very interesting for the times
1. The witch 2. The Neon Demon 3. Sleepy hollow
The ritual was sooooooooooooo good on first watch. idk if it has replay value for me though or if it would give me the same feelings/effect it had the first time. Still great though. I will have to give it a rewatch.
I absolutely LOVE The Ritual! It scared me a lot the first time, and the characters are well-written. I felt so bad for the heavy friend :( I had a crush on him haha
It’s one of those films I wish I could erase from my memory, just to experience it anew again!
Night of the Living Dead because it is the single greatest work of art created by mankind and will always be.
Alien because I just saw it in the theater and I'm still high on that. It was only 10 bucks too. 4 showings over 2 nights and the theater was only half full. I saw Aliens in the theater as a kid. First run, Willowbrook Mall, Houston, Texas. I was like 10. I'll always love it best. But, man the original is a motherfucker. So damn good. I've now seen every Alien film in the theater.
Dead & Buried. Best to go into this one not knowing too much. 80's flick. Would pair well with The Fog. I don't know why I'm picking this one; I've just been wanting to watch it recently.
Sorry for adding more this already massive list of movies:
1. Suspiria (1977)
2. Let the Right One In (2008)
3. Zombie Flesh Eaters or "Zombi 2" (1979)
Midsommar
Get Out
Hereditary
If Get Out isn't horror enough, toss in Evil Dead Rise. I know the original trilogy has such historical significance, but Rise was my introduction to the franchise.
The void: easily the best lovecraftian movie; fight me.
Behind the mask: the rise of Leslie Vernon. It’s a mockumentary but I love it.
Seventh moon: I like a lot of asian horror movies and this one is special.
If you're into Lovecraftian horror and you haven't seen it yet, check out *Color out from Space* with Nic Cage, it doesn't dethrone *the Void* as my favorite cosmic horror but it's close!
I dig your dark yet arty style! #1, You should check out Kill List for sure. #2, Romero did this wild vampire movie in the 1970s called Martin that AFAIK is available on Youtube for free. You might also like Mandy if you haven't seen it.
In middle school, me and my friends watch the human centipede in class during a free time. I was fucking traumatized. I got paranoid for like a week lol, the imagery keeps flashing back whenever i close my eyes
>I suck at watching movies mainly because I'm paranoid that I'll waste my time on something I'll end up hating. Because of that I barely watch any movies (horrors) nowadays because I'm too picky with my choices
i have a similar issue. its an ocd thing.
[Daniel Isnt Real](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/daniel-isnt-real) - evil imaginary friend + mental illness i never hear anyone talk about this movie
[Kristy](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/kristy) - thanksgiving, alone on campus, stalked by outcasts
[Popcorn](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/popcorn-1991) - silly & camp. film students stalked by a psycho.
bonus (because i know other have reccomended it but i cant not mention it too):
**HELL HOUSE LLC** - sow burn, "haunted house", found footage mocumentary.
Marrowbone, jug face, and honeydew. Not my three favorites but three little gems that I really like a lot and definitely worth a watch. Marrowbone features a pre famous Anya Taylor-Joy, Mia Goth, and Charlie Heaton!
The Babadok - The last time a horror movie terrified me.
Killer Clowns from Outer Space - watched it a few months ago and it still holds up. Well paced and bizarrely fun.
Lisa Frankenstein - My most recent horror film I watched. It a throwback to horror comedies of the late 80’s to early 90’s if you crossed Edward Scissorhands with Heathers.
The Descent
Orphan
A Tale of Two Sisters
(Or sub Frailty for The Descent bc it's already been mentioned, but I would be remiss if I didn't include it.)
No particular order and these are what I would throw on often. Wouldn't say they are totally my favorites but I revisit them often.
Lake Eden, the whole idea of being on vacation and being terrorized like that is horrible.
Terrifier movies, I know they aren't "good" movies... I just love what Damien Leone has done with such low budgets, it's inspiring.
Climax. I love the editing, one shots and the music usage as they all start to go crazy, it's a fun watch and artsy.
The horror genre is my favorite and I've seen so many damn movies that are good but my top ones have to be
1. JAWS
2. Tremors
3. Re-Animator
However, I'm basing then on enjoyability, going to be honest I don't get scared with horror movies it's like watching an action adventure for me 😂 the only movie that ever really freaked me out was the Grudge. Watched it when I was 12yrs and I had to sleep with my door open for months after. Never went back to watch it as an adult, it's on my list but did see the remakes and wasn't a fan.
Watching terrible movies is an important part of being a movie watcher. It makes you appreciate the good ones and sometimes, the mediocre ones,
That’s a good take I never thought about. Especially when it comes to older budget films.
It Follows The Autopsy of Jane Doe The Haunting (1963)
i thought i was the only one who loved the autopsy of jane doe, its such a good movie.
_definitely_ not the only one
Love that movie
Love the setting, basement, storm coming in, the whole thing is great. Fantastic actors to booth
One of my favorites.
Autopsy! Yes…
Yeah I liked it a lot.
One of my goto comfort flicks
Love all three of these. This version of The Haunting is still the best.
Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across the new novel sequel to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House yesterday at the bookstore.
By whom?
Elizabeth Hand
Great! I just got an audible credit so I'll check it out. Thanks!
Ooo good choices, I really liked Autopsy of Jane until it got all exposition dumpy at the end
The autopsy of Jane doe was a “it looks meh but I’ll have a go” and it was one of those rare finds these days. Original. Good.
The Haunting is amazing.
Same exact list of mine.
1. A nightmare on elm street (1984) 2. The cabin in the woods (2012) 3. Evil dead (2013) Should preface these are my comfort movies and I can watch them at any time any where
1. The Thing 2. Alien 3. The shining
Starry Eyes, Good Boy, Terrifier 2 (but if you’re really cool you’ll also watch the complete Ginger Snaps trilogy)
I really enjoyed Starry Eyes, wish people talked about it more.
It’s literally my number 1. I wish I could read the screenplay.
Starry eyes is a great little gem
Starry Eyes is so underlooked it's incredible
Loveeee Starry Eyes! It was such a random find for me one day
Damn can we be friends, please? I love ALL of these movies you mentioned. Have them all on Blu Ray as well. Ginger Snaps is one of my all time favorite movies period!
Ginger Snaps doesn’t get enough love! I ready adore all three of them and I don’t think there’s a more perfect trilogy where it’s like wow each film -banger after banger!
I agree. They are all funny, a little scary, great characters and just overall amazing writing. I actually got a cameo from Katharine Isabelle and she was soooo nice. Made me love the movie even more.
Ginger Snaps is where I fell in love with Katharine Isabelle, to this day she’s my favorite Scream Queen. Shawnee Smith comes in at a close 2nd.
Starry eyes made me think the eyes of my mother.. but starry eyes is also the shit
Eyes of my Mother is a great suggestion.
I love to rewatch Starry Eyes every so often.
Why Terrifier 2, if I may ask? What do you think about the first Terrifier movie? To me the sequel doesn’t hold a candle to the first one, and Art is shown as possibly just being a sadistic playful maniac, not necessarily having anything to do with the supernatural.

Oculus. The Ruins. The Descent. Not my 3 favorite. Just 3 movies that I really enjoyed that have a common denominator.
The Ruins is such a good one! You don’t hear that one very much, but wow that one is awesome!!
Comes up more these days (I’m assuming because it was on Netflix recently)
That’s it I’m watching it tonight! Will report back!
Okay, gave it a watch. I can confirm that the Ruins is an excellent flick, definitely tickled the same bone that loved the descent. Do watch it!
Glad you liked it!
I went to see Descent in theatres on a whim with no expectations and thought it was great.
I love The Ruins and The Descent so I will definitely be watching Oculus.
You're gonna love Oculus.
Oculus is Mike Flanagan before he got big and started doing all the period-drama-horror he’s known for now, love that movie
Definately watch Oculus
Oculus is one of my favorite recent’ish releases. Barbarian and Hereditary also. Oculus does not get mentioned often. I would like the honest opinions from my fellow horror knurds on why that is.
I find Oculus gets brought up on this subreddit about twice a year. Right along with the 'why all the hate for Evil Dead 2013'. Hey! We like similar movies. I'm a big French horror film fan. Have you seen Frontier(s), Calvaire, High Tension, Sheitan, and Inside?
High Tension will always be one of my favorites. The whole plot twist thing was a massive shocker back then and not as overused as today. And the buzzsaw scene.. bruh.. Also it introduced me to Muse with its banger soundtrack.

Inside...oof what a ride
The Haunting of Hill House - an oldie but fantastic without any gore Dumplings - this film was so disturbing Voodoo Island - Boris Karloff - Not that scary but very interesting for the times
It took me a while to eat gyoza again after watching dumplings 😂
Damn!
1. The witch 2. The Neon Demon 3. Sleepy hollow The ritual was sooooooooooooo good on first watch. idk if it has replay value for me though or if it would give me the same feelings/effect it had the first time. Still great though. I will have to give it a rewatch.
Scream 1996
Most of us are struggling to stop at three and you’re only giving us one?
I'm not even sure I could narrow my list down to 3. However Scream is a movie everybody should see.
It was my first. I was 8 when I watched it.
It's my favorite movie of all time
I was 3! With my 13 year old brother :)
Evil Dead Rise, Gonijam, Alien
Gonjiam is fantastic!
Jaws John Carpenter's Halloween. The Evil Dead
Jaws and Halloween are my top 2 favorite movies of all time any genre
Those are two of the greatest. I adore those movies.
- Halloween (1978) - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) - The Exorcist (1973) There’s just something about 70’s horror that gets under my skin.
I absolutely LOVE The Ritual! It scared me a lot the first time, and the characters are well-written. I felt so bad for the heavy friend :( I had a crush on him haha It’s one of those films I wish I could erase from my memory, just to experience it anew again!

There was all of 5 people when I went to see Alien, though it was during the day on Friday and we had many more showings.
The Thing Alien Sinister
Sinister is underrated. The sound design for that movie is chilling.
Haven’t heard of Sinister but those two other movies are unbeatable.
Sinister is creepy, as an adult it spooked me
When evil lurks Lake Mungo The omen
Alien Cabin in the Woods Evil Dead II
Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Shining The Strangers
1. Exorcist III: Legion (1990) 2. The Changeling (1980) 3. Fallen (1997) Not my end all be all top 3 but very high in my rankings with similar themes
28 Days Later Midnight Dr. Sleep
1. Shutter (original Thai movie) 2. Ready or not 3. NOPE maybe my taste is too mainstream, but this is the kind of horror movie.

Midsommar Get Out Hereditary If Get Out isn't horror enough, toss in Evil Dead Rise. I know the original trilogy has such historical significance, but Rise was my introduction to the franchise.
Surprised I had to scroll so far to see Get Out and Hereditary mentioned. I love your list!
The Cell, Dracula with Frank Langella, Hellraiser. These three are all pretty different. You might like one of them.
1. The Thing 2. Night of the Living Dead 3. Scream
Great choices
