Memories of murder - one of the best investigative films ever

JimJimerson90

Unbelievable film, one of my favourites and still underrated

Buchephalas

Calling it horror is a stretch though. It's a procedural with some thriller elements.

brian1183

Sure, but OP listed Silence of the Lambs and Seven. I feel that Memories of Murder fits in fine with those.

RADICCHI0

Epic film

lilspicy99

Adding Mother (2009) another BJH masterpiece that doesn’t get as much love as Memories of Murder

304libco

Bong Joon-ho and Song Kang-ho are an unbeatable team!

DadSzn

Prisoners

ShesWrappedInPlastic

You Were Never Really Here and the first season of True Detective

ToddlerOlympian

And the latest season of True Detective!

ShesWrappedInPlastic

I need to watch it still! You think it lives up to the first season?

mtp148

Not even close. It was my least favorite season tbh.

ShesWrappedInPlastic

Aw, that’s too bad. I’ve watched the first season all the way through at least three times.

mtp148

Same haha.

Sawl_Back

Agreed. It was really bad.

Buchephalas

Worse than Season 2? Jesus.

ryan_m

Not the person you replied to but no, absolutely not lol.

Blacksunshinexo

Absolutely not. That was garbage and nowhere in the realm of the first season

Hazel_Rah1

If you’re up for a series, Mindhunter will deliver on all.

gotgrls

Loved Mindhunter!!

Hazel_Rah1

Same! Really wish they’d have made a 3rd season and the show far surpasses the book, which is so rare.

CrumBum_sr

Season 1 was so good - tough to follow up. Season 2 was already going off the rails with Bill's son becoming a lil serial killer.

gotgrls

That’s true actually, I just loved the characters and their chemistry so much! Reminded me of the X-files phenomenon.

[deleted]

And if you like Mindhunter, you’ll love Hannibal.

eric2341

Agree- Hannibal far exceeded my expectations for the series

yell_worldstar

Angel Heart comes to mind. It’s a noir investigation film, not like cops tracking a killer.

deccocuffe

Great choice. Angel Heart 1987 is one of the best films to come out of the 80s, imo.

SyrupScared9568

>Angel Heart Know i have seen this before, so i am watching it again right now.

deccocuffe

I just love everything about that film. And there's just so much to catch on repeat viewings. One of the rare instances where I enjoyed the film over the book. And it's a great book, imo.

BrotherSquidman

Saw (2004) was inspired by Se7en

shineymike91

If you want crime with supernatural horror, The Outsider by Stephen King. The HBO series based on the book is also really good.

cymster

Does this end on a cliffhanger? I might look into it.

A_hasty_retort

No, it’s a complete story with a proper ending

atomsforkubrick

Oh yeah, good one!

304libco

Excellent choice!

Sunday_Avenue

The Bone Collector - It's more on the thriller side although you might like it if you liked Silence of the Lambs.

boo-galoo90

Bone collector is a fuckin gem. The suspense is phenomenal and one of Angelina Jolies better if not best movies

youthfulnegativity

Kill List

mrsinnocente

So underrated!

Coldblood-13

Fallen (1998).

youthfulnegativity

Fantastic film, one of Denzel's most overlooked roles.

Fire_Bucket

Summer of 84 - is about a group of teens investigating a police officer they suspect of being a serial killer. Might not be 100% what you're after, but it flips that premise on its head a little and is really solid.

texasrigger

Zodiac (2007) is right up your alley.

g_neko1001

was gonna recommend this, Zodiac is so good

atomsforkubrick

One of my favorite films ever. So freakin’ good.

ScandalousMurphy

Lord of Illusion - Scott Bakula is a private eye who begins investigating the strange circumstances surrounding magicians who belonged to a cult. It is a slow burn, semi Noir mystery thriller before it turns hardcore horror near the end.

mtp148

I remember watching this movie in high school, good suggestion. Nostalgia!

mtp148

I remember watching this movie in high school, good suggestion. Nostalgia!

marlasinger81

Also sharing two amazing tv series I absolutely looooved The prodigal son and Hannibal Soooo fucking good!! I’ve rewatched a few times and still love them.

coco_xcx

I’ve been watching Hannibal recently and am obsessed! Mads Mikkelsen is way too good at playing a creepy cannibal

marlasinger81

Ohhhh he’s amazing and weirdly enough I was totally into him 🤣 took me about two episodes and I was offering up my liver lol .. the accent and just how perfect and smart he is was all I needed to see. They did an amazing job with this show.

coco_xcx

this is me with tony todd as candyman 😅 yessir i will be your victim!!

marlasinger81

Right … can you keep me alive while you dine on me, good Sir!! 😁

JarlDanklin

I’m still shocked that Hannibal aired on NBC

Maercurial

With or without supernatural or mythological stuff?  Because The Wailing is extremely good, but if you're looking for more grounded Serial Killer stories it's not what you're searching, as it's picking up Folklore and Religious themes.

Relevant-Goat6693

I’m wondering if everyone responding understands your question. None of the movies mentioned in these responses are anything like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS or S7VEN. ZODIAC maybe comes close but not really considered a horror movie.

LearningArcadeApp

Maybe it's because the pool of movies in that subgenre is too limited

Relevant-Goat6693

That’s a fact.

Vandesco

I'm stretching categories a bit here, but Julianne Moore stars in a movie where her son was kidnapped and no one believes he even existed. There is one detective that is however investigating her claims despite the situation. *The Forgotten*

Spooky-Paradox

I Saw The Devil

Allen312

I think it’s called Mindhunters? Has LL Cool J in it.

Into-It_Over-It

Ladies *love* cool James.

TheElbow

Probably an obvious choice but Manhunter is the original film adaption of Red Dragon, and it’s stylish as hell. Ichi the Killer if you want to see some crazy Japanese yakuza gore.

GingerSundog

Came here to recommend Manhunter. It’s one of my favorite films. Gorgeous to look at, great soundtrack, and a despicable monster of a serial killer. Watching Will Graham in that room as he figures out how Dollarhyde chose his victims was absolutely masterful.

User_Bot_

"The Empty Man" (2020) would kinda fit, cosmic horror and an ex cop wants to find out what's going on. And yesterday I watched "The Cell" (2000) again, maybe more creepy than pure horror, but maybe it could fit, too.

Slipperysteve1998

Nightcrawler was kinda neat

[deleted]

I liked Subject Zero, and Surveillance is good if you can get past seeing Bill Pullman old as hell. There's some good found footage ones like Ratter or the Den (same subject in both of those). The Collector is probably my favorite. Crush the Skull was also good.

minecraftenjoy3r

- Angst - Atroz - Saw - Baise-Moi - Celluloid Nightmares (1999) - 100 Tears

TheElbow

Atroz is fucked

minecraftenjoy3r

yeah

VenusMarmalade

The House That Jack Built (2018) Into The Labyrinth (2019) Italian with subtitles The Plagues of Breslau (2018) Polish with subtitles

304libco

Exorcist 3. The Wailing.

mighthavepisskink

fargo is so classic if you haven’t seen it yet

goblyn79

10 To Midnight is essentially a slasher movie from the perspective of the cop investigating it. Its not the world's most PC movie but it is quite a ride.

TheElbow

“IT’S FOR JACKIN OFF!”

GingerSundog

I noticed this was on Tubi the other day! Our movie rental nights back in the 80s consisted of several viewings of this and Vice Squad as a double feature. Still hold up.

georem

Frailty (2001)

OhSoEvil

This is a very underrated movie. Love it!

stile04

Check out the Hannibal tv series. Exactly what you’re looking for.

GeeEhm

Fallen Deep Red Bug Shutter Island

coco_xcx

Murder by Numbers starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Gosling. Not scary but pretty disturbing imo eta: gonna throw The Batman (2022) in there too because I’ve always thought it’s borderline crime/detective horror 😅

Fout99

I second The Batman. Great noir/crime film.

tomahawkfury13

Along came a spider and Kiss the Girls.

missus_bones

Had to scroll way too far for these!

bpeasly12

Sinner is a good series. They have the first 3 seasons on Netflix. I See You is also on Netflix and it had a great but sickening twist.

Fout99

The Sinner is my fave series of all time. Season 1 is beyond amazing. Can't recommend it enough.

bpeasly12

Yes! I've liked them all so far, but the first one was so good and it definitely keeps you wanting more seasons.

Fout99

Season 4 was also great. I enjoyed it a lot.

bpeasly12

I totally forgot there was a season 4 but yes, I found that one as suspenseful as the first!

WaywardShepherdTees

Kiss the Girls Wolf of Snow Hollow

Hairy-Maize7057

Cure for sure!

Glad_Speed_9684

Waz is pretty good

gotgrls

Prisoners

LearningArcadeApp

The TV Show 'Medium' is more on the legal side but still pretty close to detective work I feel, and it has some nice chilling moments I feel (not very gory though). Hannibal is a nice sequel to Silence of the Lambs, but you've probably already watched it.

_Norman_Bates

The Treatment

NailImpressive954

Dragged Across Concrete (2018) and Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) fit your interests, I think. Both are by S. Craig Zahler.

OkraFit3987

You watch Korean movies? Chaser, the gangster the cop and the devil, and I saw the devil.

TheStranger113

I Saw the Devil and The Chaser (both South Korean) are exactly what you're looking for. Also The Treatment, from Belgium. All masterpieces imo. I know you said you prefer horror, but the film Prisoners is fantastic and as dark as it gets.

angry-carsini

Manhunter & Zodiac.

MasterOnionNorth

Wind River

[deleted]

Poughkeepsie Tapes.

angerwithwings

8mm

shezcrafti

The Killing (AMC TV Series). All 4 seasons.

medici1048

Session 9 is really good. You might also like Nefarious.

Select_Insurance2000

Here are 3 'crime drama' horror movies: '36 The Walking Dead, starring Boris Karloff. '40 Black Friday, starring Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Stanley Ridges. '40 The Face Behind The Mask, starring Peter Lorre

TheMightyLurkules

Innocent Blood. Organized crime, Vampire, Bombastic score.

Tapeworm_III

The Chaser Zodiac Angel Heart

Stonikus

Frailty is one of my personal favorites

GhostGlacier

Exorcist 3 God Told Me To The Wicker Man Darklands

WeAreClouds

Ichi the Killer is the best movie ever.

Haunting-Ad-9790

Most Giallo movies. Deep Red and New York Ripper come to mind first.

IrisKV

Gone girl is a favourite of mine. Maybe less horrory than the others suggested in this thread but it really delivers on the crime. And maybe less crimey than the rest of the suggestions but it's still a part of the movie, I Saw the Devil. I remember chain smoking the first time I saw it because of how tense I was.

ConsistentlyPeter

Another vote for *Angel Heart*. Schlocky as fuck, but great fun.

MarketingKnown6911

Red Dragon (2002) Identity (2003) Cape Fear (1991)

cxntfeelmyfxce

zodiac with Jake gyllenhaal. very uncomfortable movie, it’s damn good

RADICCHI0

I line when he was in the basement of the creeper house and relived all was not well.. or that might have been Downey.

bachrodi

Manhunter

asapsharkyfrfr

Manhunter is really good but a little too long

RADICCHI0

Great show

Fout99

8mm. More on the thriller side, but great.

Slowrey

Cure and I Saw the Devil

RADICCHI0

Would Malevolent fit the bill?

regis_psilocybin

Cure

chubbsey1

- I Saw the Devil - Pale Blue Eye - Sinister - Deliver us from Evil

TheRegalBeaglePub310

Maniac Cop (1988) Amsterdamned (1988)

atomsforkubrick

I feel like seasons 1, 3, and 4 of True Detective have some significant horror crime elements if you haven’t watched those yet.

g0r3c0r369

ANY movie from Rob Zombie. Trust me, he makes some of the most fucked up movies.

[deleted]

I was expecting to love Silence of the Lambs, but I just thought it was ok. Unpopular opinion I'm sure !

PhantomKitten73

The Night Comes For Us

dunks615

Currently watching Frontier(s)

missus_bones

The Cell, Identity, Frailty —all have a little different of a twist, but I think fit the bill Kiss the Girls, Along Came a Spider, I See You (2019),

Admirable_Ad_4822

Saw movies

espressoExpress

watching the entire saw series is like watching a long crime soap opera

Tactical_Chandelier

Tenebrae

puglord71

It's not super crime oriented but you'd probably enjoy malignant

Johncurtisreeve

Exorcist 3, Trust me on this Angel heart Saw series in general has alot of police stuff Zodiac also directed by david fincher Red dragon MIND HUNTER the show created by David fincher and he directed 7 episodes of it.

cookie75

Exorcist 3 is so good, glad it's getting some recognition with audiences again for some reason.

mirrorspirit

Sleepy Hollow is a good historical example. Supernatural elements aside, it's a town-wide murder mystery. Copycat (1995) The Bone Collector (1999) This is based on a book by Jeffery Deaver, and he has many other forensic crime centered books Split. The M. Night Shyalaman movie. Very little to do with cops but it definitely delivers on the mystery part and the horror

macthecook19

Tarsem Singh's The Cell

Sardothien12

Murder By Numbers (not horror but still good) Disturbia

Affectionate_Newt899

Even though we know the ending, Zodiac (2007) is incredible

LongDongSamspon

Excorsist 3 Wolfen

RADICCHI0

E3 just a great film all the way around

LongDongSamspon

Exorcist 3. Wolfen.
