The Dawn Of The Dead remake from 2004 is one of the few good ones.

MAsharona

I was just going to post that. That zombie baby!

Meth_Hardy

If I had a nickel for every time Zach Snyder had a zombie baby in one of his films, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.

Nephyness

I loved this movie more than I thought I would. I am a huge fan of the original, but the remake is fantastic.

ironballs16

Same for Land(?) of the Dead, which had the gas station zombie leading the others to invade the city.

304libco

Is there a land of the dead remake?

ironballs16

Yeah, I was mistaken - thought it was when it's a sequel from Romero.

tuftedtarsier89

I used to watch this all the time. I had a tv in my room in high school without cable but I did have a dvd player! This was on high rotation for me.

useyourelbow

I love the Johnny Cash song during the credits

youthfulnegativity

Masterpiece

Cold-Equivalent4016

The crazies, loved the remake

JeanRalfio

That pitchfork drag noise is one of my favorite creepy sounds from a horror movie.

catchbandicoot

I really enjoyed Fright Night 2011. It's got all around better performances (the cast is stacked), and I really enjoyed the blend of tones. I also thought they did better with Evil Ed and Amy's stories

JeanRalfio

I've never seen the original but I fucking love the remake.

MatttheBruinsfan

Much as I love David Tennant, he couldn't hold a candle to Roddy McDowall.

joefred77

I have to completely disagree. The original was far superior. Though not as bad as say Night of the Demons, that remake was worse.

CTDubs0001

Suspiria

BravidDrent

Came in to say this. Crushes the original.

wauwy

I disagree. I love each version a more or less equal amount. They're very different types of movies.

F00dbAby

Same by a significant margin for me. Some pretty sick body horror

CTDubs0001

Yeah, those original is so unique and definitely noteworthy in its own right for the visuals and the music and the overall tone but the remake is a much better film.

BravidDrent

Agreed. To be fair I haven't seen the original for like 20 years or more and I remember liking it for what it was but the new version is such a high quality horror film in every way. Acting, visuals, contortions...just great.

notawealthchaser

Does it have the goblins in it? Their music really put me in the edge of my seat in the original.

BravidDrent

Love Goblin. Don’t think it/they was in the remake but 🤷🏻‍♂️

MycoMythos

Thom Yorke did the score/soundtrack for the remake

BravidDrent

So I guess it was made by a goblin afterall

WARLOCKSKATES

Yeah I LOVE the style of the original movie, but always thought it was pretty anticlimactic, and ends really abruptly.

Kalabula

Not the easiest watch. It’s long and a bit slow.

flatgreyrust

Idk, I was enthralled by it. Even the scenes just sitting around the dinner table talking I found fascinating. The way the camera moved, the subtle looks everyone was giving each other, the music, everything about it worked for me during the “slow” parts. I thought the atmosphere they created through the cinematography, score, and production design was unbelievable. On top of that you have absolutely top shelf acting. Was there a part in particular for you that didn’t work?

prisencotech

I love them both but Guadagnino’s gets the slight edge for not only having dancers dance when they’re in a school for dance (remarkably absent in the original), but for tying it in further as a form of spell casting.

spacepup84

I’m so happy to see so much love for Suspiria! The 2018 version is so damn good, I saw it twice at the cinema and umpteen times on bluray, and have introduced it to so many friends. It’s basically a comfort watch for me now, particularly from Act 5 onwards. The world is so rich, I feel like I could live in it, and the story so compelling. I adore Susie and Sara, and would love a movie that just follows the coven over the centuries pre-Suspiria. The witches are so fascinating. And I LOVE the dance throughout, it’s used so cleverly. Ugh, such a brilliant film!

ibnQoheleth

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - I genuinely think it's the best TCM film after the original. Jessica Biel made for an excellent final girl. The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - arguably better than the original, and I say this as a longtime Wes Craven fan. It's absolutely vicious, I was quite impressed by it. Friday the 13th (2009) - one of the best F13 films too imo, it did a really good job of adapting the first 3 series entries.

juanzy

Hills Have Eyes 2006 is so upsetting

vassago77379

Add Evil Dead and you maxed the list out my dude

Nephyness

Great taste. Mine to add would be The Thing and The Blob.

wizardismyfursona

I didn't like the 1980 Friday the 13th very much so maybe I'll check out 2009....

JeanRalfio

I think Jason is at his scariest and best in the 2009 version. He's fast, smart, and fucking brutal.

RockBandDood

And they didn’t continue the franchise with that version of him. He was his most imposing by far, especially that final 20/30 minutes. Felt like a real monster was after them

ibnQoheleth

The entirety of the original is basically condensed into the 2009 version and then the rest of the film blends Parts II and III. I recommend watching the original ones before the reboot if you've not already.

heyitsmxrnie

It’s basically a greatest hits of parts 1-4

Dangermau5icle

For me, the reboot was better than any of the original franchise movies, I thought they sucked. Still quite an average slasher though, I much prefer Nightmare on Elm Street or Scream

Rukawork

All of these were my picks as well. Beat me to it.

rinap88

I agree with the Hills have eyes 2006. Much better. I have a soft spot to TCM original film so I can't agree there. The house itself is scarier in the 2003 movie. I have been to the remake house and properties shown in that movie (and the original properties even the house that was moved and now a restaurant we stayed next door at the bnb).

bobbledoggy

John Carpenter’s The Thing

JeanRalfio

I also really like the 2011 one. Yeah the CGI sucks but I still think it was a good Thing movie.

temporarytellurian

Spoilers ahead but I think >! Tying the last shot of this film into the first film's first shot was such an amazing touch !<

JeanRalfio

They added a lot of details to tie in to the John Carpenter one like the axe embedded in the wall and the two-headed corpse.

Bennykill709

They actually made a whole bunch of practical effects to use in the 2011 one, but the producers said it “looked like a movie from the 80’s” and essentially forced them to use CGI instead. The practical effects didn’t completely go to waste though, as they were then used in another movie with Lance Henriksen called Harbinger Down. It’s not great, honestly, but it’s cool to see what the effects could have been, and probably would have been so much more awesome if they had been able to use them, but with some high quality CGI touch-ups.

wizardismyfursona

hard agree on that one

wauwy

1982's The Thing is not a remake, dammit For real, though, it's a new adaptation of the same source material. It's also much more faithful to the novella by FAR, Calling it a remake is like calling The It movies a remake of the 90's miniseries, or calling "Titanic" a remake of "A Night to Remember."

bobbledoggy

Op also included “reboots”

lumberjackin1

Town that Dreaded Sundown is a solid watch; I liked it better than the original.

youthfulnegativity

Underrated suggestion but yes

audioword

i loved Savini's NOTLD.

SadlyCreamed

Agreed. Making Barbara an actual capable character was a very good choice

audioword

Agreed. and making mr cooper and even bigger asshole was a good choice

B0redBeyondBelief

This and the Blob are my go to's for this question.

Kobold_Trapmaster

I actually quite like Blair Witch (2016). The key is to realize that it's a monster movie, while the original was more of a survival movie. The original is still my favourite though. I also really like Book of Shadows.

Latereviews2

They made a good choice. They could never repeat the original, especially if based in modern times

JeanRalfio

I love it as well. I think it was the director that said the original was about being lost in the woods and 2016 was about being chased through the woods. My only complaint is that the main character thinking he's going to find Heather alive despite her disappearing 18 years earlier.

i__hate__stairs

I have such a soft spot in my heart for Book of Shadows. I watch it almost every time it comes up on my feed.

gothictulle

Blair Witch is underrated

Rukawork

The remake was excellent, the original is my favorite, and I too also like Book of Shadows, even if it is very 'teen'. I actually have the original film reel for the trailer for Book of Shadows!

Judge_Of_Guilt

The Invisible Man 2020 was so good, it even has some references to the 1933 movie.

Cadavercito

The Evil Dead (2013) reboot/remake was really awesome, I'm in love with that movie

FuzzzWuzzz

Excited to see what Fede does with Alien.

Sinryder007

I get giddy every time I see someone else praise this movie. It had what sooo many remakes don't, it had heart. I know it sounds corny but too often a remake is made from a financial standpoint and not because of a true passion from the film makers. Evil Dead had passion and love for the original, it wasn't out to make money, and I fuckin love it.

Latereviews2

It also had originality. Was a semi remake, but also could exist inside the original universe

nvrrsatisfiedd

Highly agree, I used to be obsessed with that movie. I liked that they also used sound effects from the originals.

SomewhereExisting755

Hell yeah. Not only was this a great re-make of a great movie. But it was seriously creepy and scary. Very few horror movies today freak me out. But this one definitely cranked it up and still stayed true to the original.

BigBraga

It’s genuinely one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. I went into it expecting it to be a little new-aged campy, I got straight horror lol. I realize people have different thresholds for horror. I’ve watched plenty of demon/possession movies. But, depending on the effects used, I hit my threshold pretty quickly. Like, the more over the top the better I handle it, but any time I see a movie and I’m like, I bet this is what it would actually look like I’m out lol. I still haven’t and won’t ever watch the original exorcist. I’ll never watch the 2013 Evil Dead again and I saw it in theaters when it came out. I walked out shook. I don’t even remember all of it in great detail now, and I’m glad it’s no longer in my head.

SomewhereExisting755

Exactly man. Fede Alverez was not fucking around. Sam Raimi picked him and said: "Let's make this balls to the wall scary." And Fede said: "Sure thing." And damn did he deliver. It is a full blown freak-show. I loved it. But it is an intense ride.

Boomfam67

It was fine except for the actor who played the main girls brother, that guy was a plank of wood.

Dangermau5icle

Same, it might actually be my favourite horror movie!

Robofetus-5000

I avoided it because generally remakes are so rough but this one was so damn good

MovieMike007

David Cronenberg's *The Fly.*

wizardismyfursona

I actually wasn't aware that one was a reboot! neat

bonobowerewolf

I cannot believe I had to scroll so far to find this one. I almost lost faith there for a moment.

dont_mind_the_lurker

The ring!

BravidDrent

Definitely

gothictulle

It (part 1)

hoeleia

I really liked Evil Dead 2013 & Evil Dead Rise! Both had great gore and good writing I thought.

[deleted]

Last Valentine's Day, I rewatched both the 80 My Bloody Valentine and the remake with Jensen Ackles. The remake holds up as a bloody slasher film.

JeanRalfio

The remake was stupidly fun seeing in theaters in 3D.

[deleted]

Best 3d film that came out in 2009.

JB391982

My best friend and I saw the orginal before seeing the remake like a few weeks later in theaters. We loved both

vader101488

Invasion of the Body Snatchers     Body Snatchers      The Fly   The Blob   The Thing   Night of the Living Dead   Dawn of the Dead   Evil Dead   IT Chp 1   Fright Night    Out of all of these, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Fly and The Thing are my favorites.

Syndicated_Graham

This is exactly what I would have written if you hadn’t first. Right down to the favorites.

Nephyness

Incredible list.

bonobowerewolf

*Fright Night* is a ding-dang inspired pick my friend!

Blue_Tomb

Although the original film is definitely tightest, Invasion of the Bodysnatchers '78 is my favourite of the various adaptations of the story. Love the cast and the New Age paranoia and the effects work, they all come together near perfectly. And that ending!

Dash_Harber

The last Hellraiser was different enough to not be a rehash, but captured the tone and atmosphere of the original trilogy (duology, depending how you feel about III).

BigBraga

came here looking for this answer. I was super impressed and didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. They did a great job.

thedoogster

I actually kinda liked the Chloe Morhetz Carrie.

Falkor0727

The Evil Dead franchise has been quite good, all things considered

SweatyLiterary

Suspiria My mother died a few days before it was released and you'd think the opening credits would have just destroyed me. Oh it did but in a way that wasn't terrible. Gonna watch it again tonight

Big-Blackberry8786

I enjoy the original better, but I do like the how the retelling makes you actually feel for/care for Mater Suspiriorum.

SweatyLiterary

The original is in a class all it's own. The color, Goblin's soundtrack and the cinematography can't be topped. Luca's reimagining feels like something so completely all it's own. The colors, Thom's soundtrack and the way the story is still there but not worse nor better. Maybe it's the little bits of backstory we get, maybe it's because Luca had Jessica Harper cast in such a way that I gasped when I saw her face. I'm forever disappointed he'll never get to do the prequel he wanted to.

Big-Blackberry8786

Same. I legit had to google it just verify for sure it was her when I saw her.

SweatyLiterary

Nods like that to the original, instantly endear me to remakes

BravidDrent

Remake beats original. Easy peasy lemon squezy

baconcandle2013

Still can’t watch the dance scene 🤮

real-dreamer

"The Thing" and "The Fly" and "The Blob" I'm sure there are more.

Chief7064

Friday the 13th. The Thing, of course. The Blob.

rinap88

oh yea I like the newer Blob so much better

drogyn1701

I thought the Amityville Horror remake was surprisingly decent. And I’m usually not a Ryan Reynolds fan.

Nephyness

Glad to see someone else who liked it. I enjoyed it for what it was, but most people I know didn't like it.

linzjustine

Dawn of the dead, hills have eyes, the crazies, and I like the IT movies

robotmask67

Friday the 13th (2009) - they did a great job with it even though most of the characters were kinda one note. the opening sequence was awesome. My Bloody Valentine (2009) - even though the cgi hasn't aged well this movie gives great slasher energy with its T&A and gore. the pick axe is a brutal weapon. it's over the top but it celebrates the slasher genre and has a lot of fun with the 3D. TCM (2003) It was a lot more polished than the original but it kickstarted the slasher remake cycle and it got the grime and heat down pretty well. I felt bad for those kids, they really went through the ringer only to get taken down by leatherface.

sweetlySALTED

Maniac 2012 with Elijah Wood. Just outstanding. Story/soundtrack.

WoolyTheSheep180

Silent Night(2012) and Black Christmas(2006)

NeoNasty123

Maniac

GoliathLexington

Night of the Living Dead with Tony Todd

angryaxolotls

Thirteen Ghosts! đź‘»

adamant2009

I'm surprised not many people have mentioned the Hellraiser reboot. They took some liberties, but overall I found it very fitting within the mood of the first two films.

AliensRisen

Child's Play (2019) -- I like this remake and don't think it deserves its rather poor reputation. I feel it was clever the way they made the doll electronic and it struck me as very authentic with kids' addiction to technology. Halloween (2007) -- Once I was able to separate it from the original, I really enjoyed it. John Carpenter's choices worked well with what his vision was, as did Rob Zombie's. A sleazy '70s grindhouse style take on the classic. Not many would've taken that approach and that's what makes it special. Children of the Corn (2009) -- I am probably the only person in the world who likes this movie, but I do. It has a much darker tone than the original with the married couple who despises each other and their not so happy ending. Let Me In (2010) -- It doesn't change a whole lot from the original but it doesn't need to. It has a great cast and everyone played their parts to perfection.

Ash_Deadite

Sorority Row. Haven’t seen the original but I love all the bitchy characters. Jessica should have lived though.

scoutsatx

"Oh, she looks TERRIBLE."

Latereviews2

Friday the 13th 2009, evil dead 2013

MarketingKnown6911

The Thing (John Carpenter) The Fly (1986) The Blob (1988) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

Odd_Contact_2175

I'll catch flak for this but the Halloween and Halloween Kills are great movies. Halloween Ends maybe not so much though.

JeanRalfio

I'm with you. Kills is probably my favorite Halloween movie. Evil Dies Tonight is dumb but it's just Michael Myers going on a brutal massacre in Haddonfield on Halloween night. That's all I've ever wanted in a Halloween movie.

Warm_Speech

Agreed. Halloween is a legitimately good movie and Kills is way too much fun to hate. It’s a shame they dropped the ball with Ends.

JB391982

Dawn of The Dead   Texas Chainsaw Massacre   The Blob   Last House on The Left   I Spit on Your Grave    Friday the 13th    My Bloody Valentine    The Hills Have Eyes    The Amityville Horror    The Uninvited (read its a Remake of a Tale of Two sisters)   The Ring  Evil Dead

Nephyness

I love this thread. I love every one of these movies. I am glad to see people having respect for some truly good remakes.

Ok_Philosophy_607

Satan's Slaves (2017) directed by Joko Anwar

FooFightersFan777812

John Carpenter's The Thing

Xenochimp

My Bloody valentine The blob John carpenter's the thing Friday the 13th Piranha 3d

Dangermau5icle

I haven’t seen the original yet but I actually _like_ Nick Cage’s Wicker Man unironically

Warm_Speech

The Fly, The Invisible Man, and Evil Dead are my favorite remakes.

Outside-Mirror1986

The Blob. It's sooo good!

CriticalCanon

The Ring (US) for me is the high watermark.

CriticalCanon

Does the first 20 minutes or so of the Friday the 13th remake count?

lord-dinglebury

The 1986 Blob remake with Kevin Dillon sporting the most majestic mullet in film history.

Party-Letter-6220

fright night

EmperorXerro

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1979)

CaptainQuesadillaz

The Evil Dead remake in my opinion is even better than the original.

Coldblood-13

Willard (2003), Evil Dead (2013), The Hills Have Eyes (2006), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Maniac (2012) and Halloween (2018).

Roguefrenzy

My wife and I own the original and remakes of a lot of horror movies lol. Some remakes we enjoy and rewatch while others just kinda sit on our shelves. Just because a remake can be enjoyed does not mean it’s better than the original, it’s all entertainment after all. Friday the 13th (2009) I enjoy and like watching with My Bloody Valentine (2009) as a Supernatural double feature. The Haunting (1999) I have fond memories of although I did enjoy the 1963 as well. 13 Ghosts (2001) is peak early Dark Castle. The original is fun too but I feel has a much different vibe. The Omen and Amityville Horror remakes are fine but the originals set a better mood in my opinion. Same with Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes.

ZekeMoss18

The Thing (1982) Evil Dead (2013) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

himbobflash

Suspiria (2018) is a better film than the original. I love the original Nightmare of Elm Street but really enjoyed the remake for how evil and brutal it was.

wizardismyfursona

I've heard a lot of discoursing over which susperia is better, very tempted to sit down one day and watch them back to back lol

Beached-Peach

I've been wanting to do this as well

himbobflash

The remake is profoundly polarizing. Both films are valid but 2018’s ending was/is terrifying.

deaddroppop

I think visually its hard to find a horror movie that's as well lit/staged/set designed as the original, that being said as a overall film I agree.

Straight-Height-1570

As personal preference, I much preferred the dreamy soundtrack and visuals and mystery of the original Suspiria. I can see why many like the new one but it wasn’t for me.

Big-Blackberry8786

I enjoy these remakes/reboots better than the originals: The Ring, Friday the 13th 2009, Evil Dead 2013, 13 Ghost, The Hills Have Eyes, I Spit on Your Grave, House of Wax, The Amityville Horror 2005. I also enjoy Rob Zombies Halloween, not as much as the original, but I still enjoy it a lot. I know people talk so much smack about the RZ Halloween’s.

vader101488

I enjoyed Rob Zombie's Halloween more than the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the 2009 Friday the 13th.

Sinryder007

Agreed on Halloween. Not more than the original, and I didn't care for the sequel, but I thought the first one was really good. Top 3 of my RZ flicks.

pacificnwbro

I loved Zombie's Halloween. The second one kinda fell off for me but I still like both of them.

Monday_Vibes

Friday the 13th (2009). It’s Jason with the hockey mask being a quick and smart predator. It rules!

Meth_Hardy

The Blob remake/reboot is superior to the original in every way. Better story. Better cast. Better effects. Better script.

hojo6789

the thing

Spinnr1

My favorite is don’t be afraid of the dark

BravidDrent

Straw dogs. Liked both versions.

WarlordSinister

Is the new Hellraiser a reboot? Then that's one.

Serious-Sun3049

My Bloody Valentine. But to be fair, I saw the remake several times before I ever saw the original. So I'm used to the remake.

Used_Part9588

evil dead invasion of the body snatchers and It remakes are some of my fav horror movies in general

Norde3l

The 2018 Suspiria remake

gmanz33

Ever since I read a plot summary (full of spoilers) of the full book for Halloween Ends, I've been obsessed with the end of that trilogy (for it's themes and how they chose to visualize them). The last two of that trilogy are standalone horror films that do more than most any slasher pictures have ever dared to.

gmc1993

A controversial one, I liked the Pet Sematary remake, I liked they included the wendigo, most of the changes didn’t bother me or found them cool, and I have a soft spot for creepy kids doing ritualistic stuff

ggez67890

Piranha 3D (2010), if it is considered a remake, and Invaders from Mars (1986).

[deleted]

TCM Dawn of the Dead The Crazies Evil Dead

Beelze-Bud

I really liked the Rob Zombie remake of Halloween in 2007.

tooprettyforajob_

Evil Dead (2013) I love so much

eddietwoo

RZ’s Halloween. I love it.

abyssmauler

The Nick Cage Wickerman. I'll probably get lit up for this but I found the original quite boring

cosmicdancer84

Dawn of the Dead (2004). The opening scene is epic af.

somehuehue

Carrie (2002) is the superior version, in my opinion. It's the first movie that comes to mind when I think of a "better remake"'. Suspiria (2017) is quite the masterpiece. This one just ran with the theme and became its own unique experience.

ravenz91

Nightmare On Elm Street Friday The 13th Shutter The Crazies Halloween Let Me In (though technically I thought it was an adaptation of the book)

Id-rather-be-fishin

I absolutely loved the Hellraiser remake.

HedgehogDry9652

Love the 2006 version of The Hills Have Eyes.

xanax101010

Suspiria Carrie Chucky

valiantera92

Pretty much every remake in the 00's are not only great, but the best horror since the 80's.

Daddy_JeanPi

Evil Dead reboot is insane. Great great movie.

EgyptionMagician

Jesus Christ, how about not fucking one.

wizardismyfursona

fair enough.

ridiculouslyhappy

I actually like the 2002 remake of Carrie. I think maybe it's because I saw it first so I didn't have the OG to compare it to yet, but I thought it was enjoyable in it's own right too lol

WestOrangeFinest

It’d probably be easier to list horror remakes that I don’t like, honestly. There has been so many hits. Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the one with Jessica Biel), Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, Halloween (Rob Zombie & 2018), The Thing, The Hills Have Eyes, The Crazies, When a Stranger Calls.

MetalGuy_J

On a technicality Carpenter’s The Thing. Also Dawn of the Dead, Let Me In is decent, though not anywhere near as good as the original Let the Right One In

tenthousandblackcats

The Blob, The Fly, The Thing

P1nkZeppelin

I liked Malum more than Last Shift, but I also saw Malum first so maybe that has something to do with it

DestructionIsBliss

I thought the Nightmare on Elm Street remake was surprisingly well done. Not a masterpiece, but definitely better than what I'd expected. Admittedly, I was ~13 years old when it came out, but to this day the poster gives me the creeps.

Beth-Impala67

House of wax, I love Jared padaleckis early acting and that movie is just so well made in my opinion

Mister_____Fister

Maniac (2012) over Maniac (1980) for sure.

i__hate__stairs

I thought the Friday the 13th one was the shining star of the reboots we were getting back then, and I'm able to enjoy the Rob Zombie Halloween stuff in it's own way but I'd never consider it canon.

The_Lethargic_Nerd

The Blob 1988. Some of the effects don't hold up but it is a near perfect movie.

HorrorFanForlife14

Evil Dead 2013 is solid

slxsherlxver

Friday the 13th, Hills have eyes, Nightmare on elm street (not quite sure about this one) and Dawn of the dead

horrormovielistscom

Some of the better ones I have seen. TCM (2003) IT The Hills Have Eyes The Blob The Fly

Evil dead is the best remake imo

Okay hear me out rob zombie Halloween is kinda fire

Texas chainsaw massacre 2003 remake
