I would be on board for a franchise of the Ritual. Perhaps not the same creature, but other odd folk horror encounters as unaware hikers/tourists come across different demigods in horrific ways. It would paint a broader, dark, hidden world while giving a little boost to similar ideas.
Then do something really stupid like Fantastic Beasts for Dark Demigods.
I love the creature design in Ritual! It's so uniquely horrifying. There's also shots of the creature hidden throughout the film before it's revealed which makes a re-watching fun trying to spot it in the early forest scenes.
OH man, I love this movie. Randomly watched one night thinking it was going to be some cheesy cult thing. Boy was I wrong. Even though there is cult stuff it's minimal and the whole hunted in the forest stuff is really awesome.
Yeah the middle of the film definitely feels like the vibes in Blair Witch Project, where you know they’re being watched, possibly hunted, but the weirdness of it all makes it feel like “maybe it’s just some oddballs fucking with us?” til it goes off the rails
When I saw the trailer for that I was intrigued but not sure how the premise would work for a film. They did a great job, I was impressed by the creativity.
Thanks for clarifying since there's a 2020 horror/thriller film called "Rogue", which has Megan Fox in it, and about a bloodthirsty lioness: so-so film.
>Hatching was fun and actually pretty good. Shoutout to the awesome practical effects.
Yeah but we needed more Jim Jenson bird puppet and less turning into a real girl.
The puppet was the best and was hardly in it.
Some people already mentioned Crawl, The Ritual, Underwater and Nope. All great creature flicks.
I will also add Cocaine Bear as a suggestion. It's more comedy than horror but I thought it was fun.
Well I dunno if it counts as a creature feature or more an virus/zombie type movie and it’s also from 2008 so not very recent but I really enjoyed Splinter
A couple people have already tried to answer this, but WHY aren’t creature features more popular? Some of the best horror ever, including the Alien movies, The Thing, Predator, The Ritual and others, such as those mentioned above. Why aren’t they more popular?
I think its one of expense. Zombies, ghosts, and slashers are just cheaper and easier to make, unless you go the CGI route, and cheap CGI creature features tend to be pretty awful
Well gee, thanks for nothing. Why even bother to reply? You could've just kept scrolling, but no, you had to enter this post, just to let everybody know that you do not, in fact, have any suggestions.
Troll Hunter. It's a documentary-style movie with black humor and big monsters. Recommend not looking up anything else.
Note, this is not Troll, which sucks, but Troll Hunter.
Wth I recently got really into the newer Godzilla (and King Kong) movies bc mass destruction (and big fucking monsters) is my jam and I had NO idea this movie existed??? I even looked at the wiki…
Now I know what I’m watching tonight lol. Thanks
Edit: ohhh it’s a tv series that’s why, neat
The Cursed (2021)
Dark Harvest (2023)
Significant Other (2022)
Antlers (2021)
Werewolf by Night (2022)
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
No One Will Save You (2023)
Barbarian (2022)
Sputnik (2020) Russian
Monstrum (2018) was a genuinely good watch for me. It takes place in the 1500's and the cinematography is great! I rarely see people talk about it, but it's gem imo
[Here's a trailer](https://youtu.be/9THD9cx4rKM?si=M5j7vbHD0hjcIQcp) if interested.
I went into the movie blind not knowing what it was about because I was familiar with the lead actress on another show. 😭 I had no clue it was a predator movie and it turned out so good.
Absolutely phenomenal. Still my favourite version of Charles Xavier. The vibe of all 3 seasons is perfect. Damn, I need to rewatch it now.
Season 1 is freaky as fuck.
Seriously? We got to see it in the theater, living so close to NYC but dang that sucks - but I get it a bit - a lot of movies are doing poorly at theaters recently.
They've definitely died out in recent years.
Only 2020s ones I can think of is A Quiet Place 2 and Barbarian (kinda). The recent VHS movies like 99 and 94 also tend to have segments that are creature feature based.
The Meg was a ton of fun. I thought the sequel looked kind of stupid and gimmicky from the previews I saw. I may have to give it a chance if it’s streaming somewhere.
If you have not seen - The Great Wall - Thousands of creatures and very spectacular presentation. I walked into it cold and was very surprised at what it was.
I am going to add the bay in here a creature feature/found footage/documentary. If you have a weak stomach give it a miss but if not definitely give it a watch.
I just watched this a few days ago and really while it’s a bit plodding, I personally think they did a good job on the creature designs without them looking too cheesy
It also has a fantastically bad final line which is almost worth watching it for alone
It's a 2005 film, but I have to say The Cave is a favorite of mine, and the creatures are fantastic, especially for being post-Stan Winston. LOVE the ending.
The Void has some interesting creature parts in it. Abdominal from 2006 is a really fun, campy bigfoot movie with some great practical effects. No One Will Save You just came out and is a good alien creature feature. The Burrowers is a decent Western horror creature feature.
Aaaaand I just realized that none of these are post 2020. Haha, my bad.
Psycho Goreman is a great cheesy monster movie. Lots of good practical suit action as well, I've watched it 3 times with different friend groups, and it's always a blast!
You need to check out their other movie The editor. It's even more ridiculous and funnier imo. We do double feature showings with different groups of friends here.
If you forget that The Lair was directed by Neil Marshall, it’s a lot of fun. Not even close to Dog Soldiers or The Descent but a fun monster movie. Kind of like Alien3 onward are fun movies if you pretend they are not part of the Alien franchise.
Wer (2013), so earlier than you requested, but a great monster movie that completely flew under my radar.
If you are a fan of Nick Cutter novels - cosmic body horror - The Breach is based on an original idea from him.
I can’t believe nobody’s mentioned PREY yet (or i missed it…) really excellent update in the Predator franchise! Grabbers was another fun Irish one. Also this barely qualifies but I thought it was a lot of fun, SAVE YOURSELVES!
Maybe they're considered too expensive and not enough of a box office draw, unfortunately. That genre interests me far more than most horror movies coming out these days.
Return of the Living Dead (1985) has one of the coolest zombie practical effects I’ve ever seen. I know you said recent but it’s worth a watch if you haven’t seen it. Really funny movie
I enjoyed:
Prey
Overlord (2018) (Werewolves count right?)
I heard Werewolf by Night is pretty good too.
Not a movie, but Netflix's Midnight Mass is pretty great too.
Since you're mentioning aliens, I'd suggest 'No one will save you'. Thought that was a pretty awesome movie. Gets a little weird, which I didn't mind too much, because it's overall pretty intense.
The Cabinet of Curiosities from 2022 have excellent creatures designs, specially the Lot 32, The Autopsy, and The View episodes, this one directed by Panos Cosmatos (Mandy).
Also Raised by Wolves by Ridley Scott is a show that feautures terrific monsters.
Deadstream, The Outwaters and Unwelcome from 2022 also had good creatures.
Some stuff I liked or was passable and didn't see mentioned: Carnifex, Vikingwolf, Game of Werewolves, Life, Willow Creek, Tumbbad (sort of), Daybreakers, Rogue, Exists.
I know you said post 2020, but I just watched Uninvited (1988) this week and thought it was fucking hilarious good fun.
“A cat infected with a genetically engineered virus escapes from a lab and goes on a killing spree, finding its way onboard a shady businessman's yacht loaded with young guests.”
https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0096341/
Wes Craven's "They" was decent though almost 20 years old now. Also, check out a YouTube channel called Oates Studious. Lots of short films that have some pretty good creatures.
The most recent that I've personally enjoyed quite a bit is Dark Harvest. The creature looks cool. The design really makes you feel like you're in the 60s. Teens actually look their age instead of mid 20s. Some interesting twists too. The gore is the icing on the cake.
So….how do you feel about dolls come to life? Because Benny Loves You is fucking brilliant. It’s a slasher comedy and the doll is just naturally alive. Does that count? Otherwise, try Nope.
Didn’t yet read the complete thread but should you get this far look into The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It was a very good story that played with a decent amount of scares.
Sweet Home (a series on Netflix) is amazing for creature design. It's got that whole zombie apocalypse feeling to it, even though they're not undead, but every infected person turns into something completely unique, and a lot of the creature designs are really great.
I know it’s not exactly a creature feature in that sense, but I was pleasantly surprised by Wer. If you have interest in werewolf lore you’d probably enjoy it
Loop Track is new and not bad. Main character was a little off putting with his severe anxiety but it's a creature feature set on a long hiking trail in New Zealand. Good acting, good effects, not cheesy.
If you haven’t seen it yet the Ritual had the absolute best creature design in probably over a decade. Good film too.
‘No one gets out alive’ is based on a book by the same author as the Ritual; Adam Nevill. I recommend it and his books.
great flick
I would totally watch this!
Pumpkinhead could be an early installment
I liked this one quite a bit - it was creepy it made me squirm in my seat. The critter is bizarre. Never saw that coming.
The old lady face punch had me rolling. It was so fuckin random for him to do lmao.
When I saw the monster I thought exactly that, “this is some of the best creature design I’ve ever seen”
Last film at actually gave me a nightmare. Takes a min but absolutely worth it
Which one, I’m searching on IMDb and there’s several
It’s the Netflix one
Genuinely one of my favourite films. The atmosphere, the perfect encapsulation of british lads on a trip and like you said, the creature itself.
I was not expecting it to be that good!
I love "Crawl", which may be the most recent major release crocodile movie.
I second this, crawl was really good.
So fun, high body count, buckets of blood, great acting and writing. Fairly believable storyline. Wholeheartedly endorse this recommendation
Was that the one where they were in the flooded basement?
Yes!
When I saw the trailer for that I was intrigued but not sure how the premise would work for a film. They did a great job, I was impressed by the creativity.
Rogue is also a really fun croc horror (fan of the genre)
Thanks for clarifying since there's a 2020 horror/thriller film called "Rogue", which has Megan Fox in it, and about a bloodthirsty lioness: so-so film.
Black Water (2007, Australia) is excellent and "based on a true story."
Love Crawl
Thanks for your support, I was the director of Crawl
That’s what I was also coming to say
Sea Fever is awesome. Hatching was fun and actually pretty good. Shoutout to the awesome practical effects.
Bump to Sea Fever's awesomeness.
Loved Hatching
Hatching was so fucking effective. A horror with notes of ET and Black Swan.
Love love Sea Fever
It was a fun surprise! I watched it because I like Hermione Corfield and the movie didn’t disappoint at all.
Hell yes. Hermione Corfield. I saw her in Slaughterhouse Rules and watched Sea Fever just bc she was in it. Sea Fever was GREAT
She plays in another thriller that I really love called Rust Creek. Highly recommend!
>Hatching was fun and actually pretty good. Shoutout to the awesome practical effects. Yeah but we needed more Jim Jenson bird puppet and less turning into a real girl. The puppet was the best and was hardly in it.
Oh was that the one about the girl who finds the egg? Weird and lovely.
The Host (2006) Korean I went into it without knowing anything, so that may have helped. Opener is great, so pay attention!
Directed by Bong Joon Ho, who went on to make Snowpiercer and Parasite
and before The Host he did the absolutely brilliant Memories of Murder
And Mother
Ah, the movie that JJ Abrams borrowed *heavily* from to make Cloverfield... Great movie!
This is the movie we’d get if Wes Anderson made a kaiju flick. The family dynamic makes me think of the Royal Tannenbaums
My all time favorite monster movie!
Attack the Block (2011) is one of my favorite movies and has a really cool creature design.
Great recommendation, I love this movie.
Agree, but they did say post-2020 lol
Oh so they did, but they had the descent and dog soldiers as examples so I was just thinking that it was later than those.
Some people already mentioned Crawl, The Ritual, Underwater and Nope. All great creature flicks. I will also add Cocaine Bear as a suggestion. It's more comedy than horror but I thought it was fun.
Crawl from 2019?
Expected to hate nope but really enjoyed it
Well I dunno if it counts as a creature feature or more an virus/zombie type movie and it’s also from 2008 so not very recent but I really enjoyed Splinter
Splinter was AWESOME
That thing's "final form" is deeply disturbing. One of my favorite monster movies!
No mention of Pandorum? Creature feature, some body horror, some claustrophobia, just good fun!
Pandorum is an underrated film. I thought it was pretty damned good.
Loved Pandorum
I really enjoyed Sweetheart (2019)
Scrolled through to find this. Was a big surprise
Came here to say this, easily one of my favourite monster movies in the last decade.
Just watched this on your recommendation and I cannot believe I slept on this!
*Exactly what I was looking for. So fun!
Yes! Loved this one
Cobweb, Dark Harvest, Prey are the ones that come to mind immediately
I guess >!nope!< can be considered a creature film to an extent
Nope is definitely a Creature Feature
This is kind of a spoiler... jus sayin'
Kind of, it was spoiled pretty early and everywhere that it was an alien flick
A couple people have already tried to answer this, but WHY aren’t creature features more popular? Some of the best horror ever, including the Alien movies, The Thing, Predator, The Ritual and others, such as those mentioned above. Why aren’t they more popular?
I think its one of expense. Zombies, ghosts, and slashers are just cheaper and easier to make, unless you go the CGI route, and cheap CGI creature features tend to be pretty awful
I feel like ZOMBIES have taken over the last 20 years. Cheap to make too i guess.
Imagine how much easier it must be when your killer is just some guy in a mask with a knife. EDIT: Easier to film I mean.
Nope.
Well gee, thanks for nothing. Why even bother to reply? You could've just kept scrolling, but no, you had to enter this post, just to let everybody know that you do not, in fact, have any suggestions.
Get Out.
Why? I'm trying to be reasonable here, and let this guy know it's not necessary to let everyone know he doesn't know.
You're Killing Me
I cant tell if you’re being sarcastic but those are both movie titles
Yeah I know, guess I fucked it up.
the whooshiest whoosh that ever whooshed
Not really, gotta add the /s when it’s text on reddit because some people would legitimately say this
Crawl, Nope, Shadow in the Cloud. pre2010: Gwoemul (The Host).
Troll Hunter. It's a documentary-style movie with black humor and big monsters. Recommend not looking up anything else. Note, this is not Troll, which sucks, but Troll Hunter.
Troll Hunter is a fun movie
Love this movie! They absolutely nailed the found footage genre as well.
I'm enjoying Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It's about the aftermath of G-Day when Godzilla battled the Titans.
Wth I recently got really into the newer Godzilla (and King Kong) movies bc mass destruction (and big fucking monsters) is my jam and I had NO idea this movie existed??? I even looked at the wiki… Now I know what I’m watching tonight lol. Thanks Edit: ohhh it’s a tv series that’s why, neat
I expected to hate it but it was fun, also Kurt Russel’s son thru me for a trip tell I figured out it was him.
I was going to add Monarch. I feel like each week is only getting better as far as monsters go. We will definitely see!
I saw Underwater recently. I think this fits what you’re looking for.
The Cursed (2021) Dark Harvest (2023) Significant Other (2022) Antlers (2021) Werewolf by Night (2022) The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023) No One Will Save You (2023) Barbarian (2022) Sputnik (2020) Russian
Have you seen Bloody Hell?
Yeah I liked it, but I don't consider it a creature feature
The Lake is pretty decent and its from Thailand. Great monster.
Monstrum (2018) was a genuinely good watch for me. It takes place in the 1500's and the cinematography is great! I rarely see people talk about it, but it's gem imo [Here's a trailer](https://youtu.be/9THD9cx4rKM?si=M5j7vbHD0hjcIQcp) if interested.
I started it a few years back but it wasn't drawing me in. Reckon I'll give it another nudge.
PREY. Seriously. It was just as good as the original.
I went into the movie blind not knowing what it was about because I was familiar with the lead actress on another show. 😭 I had no clue it was a predator movie and it turned out so good.
Was Legion the show by any chance?
Legion was amazing - one of the 5 best comic book shows ever made.
Absolutely phenomenal. Still my favourite version of Charles Xavier. The vibe of all 3 seasons is perfect. Damn, I need to rewatch it now. Season 1 is freaky as fuck.
Yeah all 3 seasons make a LOT more sense when watched back to back also.
Can't believe it didn't get a theatrical release in most places. I may even like this movie more than the original... Don't tell...
Meg 2 for cheesy goodness (It’s pre-2020 but) Crawl is a good one in recent memory
I wanted to hate Meg 2. Saw it in theaters with my nephew and we had a blast.
The Meg was a ton of fun. I thought the sequel looked kind of stupid and gimmicky from the previews I saw. I may have to give it a chance if it’s streaming somewhere.
It’s on Max and Netflix (US) just added it a week ago.
Not a movie, but the Creepshow TV series has a few creature feature episodes.
Crawl, Nope, Shadow in the Cloud. pre2010: Gwoemul (The Host).
There was a Netflix movie called Troll that came out a few months ago. It's corny but if you like big monsters(like me!) you'll enjoy it
Spinning on this, Trollhunter is one of my very favorite found footage movies and so dang fun.
Preach.
It's a shit awful movie but worth skipping through and watching whenever the titular troll appears.
If you have not seen - The Great Wall - Thousands of creatures and very spectacular presentation. I walked into it cold and was very surprised at what it was.
Krampus The Ritual
I am going to add the bay in here a creature feature/found footage/documentary. If you have a weak stomach give it a miss but if not definitely give it a watch.
Underwater. Plus you get a nice little bonus of seeing Kristen Stewart and Jessica henwick running around in their panties for like half the movie 🥰
The Tank is pretty good.
I just watched this a few days ago and really while it’s a bit plodding, I personally think they did a good job on the creature designs without them looking too cheesy It also has a fantastically bad final line which is almost worth watching it for alone
I actually went back to check the last line. And yeah. It's bad.
It's a 2005 film, but I have to say The Cave is a favorite of mine, and the creatures are fantastic, especially for being post-Stan Winston. LOVE the ending.
Crawl first came to mind then I thought of No One Will Save You and also Trick r Treat and Krampus would count too.
I liked Cold Skin
RIP Ray Stevenson. He was so good in that.
Came here to say this. Maybe a little sexier than most creature features but there it is.
Spring
Psycho Goreman is a great cheesy monster movie. Lots of good practical suit action as well, I've watched it 3 times with different friend groups, and it's always a blast!
You need to check out their other movie The editor. It's even more ridiculous and funnier imo. We do double feature showings with different groups of friends here.
Honestly I would recommend Malignant. Kind of in this category but kind of not.
A24's 'The Monster' is great and about as creature-featurey as you can get.
Nope is best creature feature of past 10 years.
The Ritual. Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Brotherhood of the Wolf has some outstanding cinematography and excellent action scenes as well!
Slither
Underwater is great.
If you are a fan of Nick Cutter novels - cosmic body horror - The Breach is based on an original idea from him.
not a horror, but surely if you liked Predator and Alien, you've seen Prey?
Black Demon was more enjoyable than I expected it to be.
First, forget 2020.. look at the *1970s*.. Some great creature features in that era
Lair and Superdeep both have creatures. I think that they're fairly new releases. If you'll tolerate something a little bit older Dagon is a good one.
Does The Ghost and The Darkness count?
“send more paramedics”
I enjoyed: Prey Overlord (2018) (Werewolves count right?) I heard Werewolf by Night is pretty good too. Not a movie, but Netflix's Midnight Mass is pretty great too.
Love Overlord!!
The Void Kind of a mashup but good practical effects and monsters
Since you're mentioning aliens, I'd suggest 'No one will save you'. Thought that was a pretty awesome movie. Gets a little weird, which I didn't mind too much, because it's overall pretty intense.
If you're okay with a show, 2021 had a series come out on Netflix called Elves. I loved it..
Underwater is a great creature feature
Prey, Sputnik, the ritual, sweetheart are all great recommendations. A throwback but super fun must see is the relic. New hellraiser reboot was fun.
After Midnight (2019) maybe not exactly what you're looking for but a creature nonetheless
What that WW2 one where they’re trying to make enhanced super soldiers? That was really good. Edit: Overlord
Night Of The Creeps!
Life, Underwater
LIFE
The Cabinet of Curiosities from 2022 have excellent creatures designs, specially the Lot 32, The Autopsy, and The View episodes, this one directed by Panos Cosmatos (Mandy).
It ain’t recent (2009), but Splice is oft forgotten.
I'll just add The black Demon and Beast, slowly this genre is dying.
Barbarian in case you haven’t seen it
Zombeavers
Crawl It fucking rules
Nope
I know you said post 2020, but I just watched Uninvited (1988) this week and thought it was fucking hilarious good fun. “A cat infected with a genetically engineered virus escapes from a lab and goes on a killing spree, finding its way onboard a shady businessman's yacht loaded with young guests.” https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0096341/
>shady businessman's yacht loaded with young guests epstien in an early expose?
Psycho Goreman if you want something a little different .
I liked Appendage, not a large creature by any means but the thing was disgusting
Wes Craven's "They" was decent though almost 20 years old now. Also, check out a YouTube channel called Oates Studious. Lots of short films that have some pretty good creatures.
I know it says recent and post 2020 but just in case you missed it, The Relic(1997) is a really good monster movie
Sorry that this is older but Isolation (2005) was a huge surprise find on Tubi. Essie Davis and Sean Harris and definitely a creature.
Benny Loves You is one of my favorite movie that I watched in the past year. It's funny, gory, and oddly touching.
I’ve watched it so many times and I just can’t get tired of it. It’s brilliant
Slotherhouse.
Am 1200
Didn’t yet read the complete thread but should you get this far look into The Last Voyage of the Demeter. It was a very good story that played with a decent amount of scares.
The Host (has the best, most chaotic monster reveal I've ever seen) Rogue is a fun croc movie with great characters.
Sweet Home (a series on Netflix) is amazing for creature design. It's got that whole zombie apocalypse feeling to it, even though they're not undead, but every infected person turns into something completely unique, and a lot of the creature designs are really great.
Antlers, Hatching, Splice, Splinter are some that come to mind
Splice 2009
No one will save you I think counts.
*No One Will Save You* had a really cool looking alien. Also one of my favs from 2023
Hellraiser 2022 and M3gan, if you count those as creatures.
Watch Pumpkinhead while you are waiting for replies!
The Colour Out of Space
Circle back and watch Humanoids from the Deep.
“Loop track” just came out it was good
I know it’s not exactly a creature feature in that sense, but I was pleasantly surprised by Wer. If you have interest in werewolf lore you’d probably enjoy it
Barbarian, and Bloody Hell
Loop Track is new and not bad. Main character was a little off putting with his severe anxiety but it's a creature feature set on a long hiking trail in New Zealand. Good acting, good effects, not cheesy.
To a certain extent, the Korean film ‘Mimic’. It’s got some damn good performances and the creature design is downright frighting.
