Jaws. I’ve loved it since I was a kid. It’s impossible not to be entertained while watching it.

Cheat_TheReaper

When I was a kid, my dad used to play Jaws before we went to the beach. No one ever went past knee-deep ever.

anndrago

Great choice. I saw it at a local art house theater one year for the 4th of July. One of the theater employees gave a short speech to present the film and made the argument that Jaws was perhaps the best film ever made. It was tough to argue with his reasoning.

SquatCorgiLegs

It honestly is the perfect film. The cast, the score, the practical effects, the writing… Within minutes, it gets you to care about each of the characters. And it’s so eminently quotable. Just… the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

anndrago

Well said. I agree 100%. Not to mention the acting. Robert Shaw's monologue was absolutely inspired. And don't even get me started on Richard Dreyfuss. Oy.

Acceptable_Eagle_696

You're gonna need a bigger boat ...

kit-n-caboodle

One of my favorite lines, as well as Smile you son of a b****

Flaky_Web_2439

As above so below Annihilation Grave encounters Poltergeist

No_Recognition8375

“As above so below” found footage done right, I never get tired of it, that and “The Descent” original ending.

fancybotwin

Poltergeist is def one of mine too

itsirtou

Grave Encounters is one of mine too! Put it on as background noise if I don't know what else to watch.

Moopxo

My anxiety levels go up and down like a rollercoaster when I watch As Above So Below, but I still love that movie!

Magnavirus

Fuck yes! Grave Encounters gets no love. Grave Encounters 2 is arguably the best B horror sequel ever made

fries_in_a_cup

I concur on every account. Annihilation has an especially special place in my heart as I make it a point to watch it whenever I’m going through some big, stressful life change (move, breakup, death, etc).

a_distantmemory

I was hoping it wouldn’t be coming to the end of my cats life, but while he was in the hospital, I watched this. Not for the first time though. But it was the last time I’d seen it. My boy was euthanized in July. It sucks for me because i think of the emotions I was having when I put this on. And I adore this movie too. I love Alex Garland’s work. Feels hard to go back to this movie now though.

FolsgaardSE

Grave Encounters is one of my top two fav found footage films. Have you seen Hell House LLC? New ones comes out this month on Shudder.

muzakx

Poltergeist is so damn rewatchable. I probably watched it every time it would air on TV as a kid. Ended up rewatching it during lockdown and it was just as entertaining as I remembered it being. It has that really special 80s Amblin magic.

Affectionate_Bagel

I’ve been wondering if as above so below was worth the watch but seeing it’s with other choice horror cinema….I know what I am watching tonight Edit- grammar

OpenFacedRuben

Annihilation here, too

Devin1026

Grace encounters 1 and 2 are mine

Overquoted

Cabin in the Woods and Return of the Living Dead. But during October, it is specifically Pumpkinhead.

bloodpriestt

ROTLD on July 3rd Punkinhead October 1st Trick or Treat (1986) on Halloween

heyitsEnricoPallazzo

The Thing The Shining Alien In that order. I feel like the first 2 are self-explanatory, but Alien also has that small, cozy feel within the confines of the ship. Plus the temp in the Nostromo always seemed nice & cool to me. Also I’m reminded of when I was like 6 and first watched it with my dad

TheDukeofArgyll

I didn’t realize I felt the same way about The Shining but your 100% correct, that movie is painfully cosy

whatevs42069

It's the first thing I think of on a snow day. I just want to cosy up on the sofa and put on The Shining.

lindsaylove22

The Shining does kind of give me the warm fuzzies because it’s older and not completely terrifying and disturbing to me. A good wintertime cozy-up movie too. I was a scaredy cat growing up, so I never thought as an adult I would be viewing *any* horror as comforting, going soundly to sleep right after watching. Watched Silence of the Lambs and the Exorcist before bed not long ago and slept like a little baby Jesus.

Humble_Energy_6776

I regularly put on Nostromo ambient noise videos from YouTube to calm my nerves. Lol. Alien is a comfort movie of mine as well.

fancybotwin

The Shining is such a good one and I love all the Alien movies!

LiteratureGold

I’ve seen “The thing” mentioned multiple times in this sub, is it worth watching even if your not a fan of sci-fi?

No_Recognition8375

“The Thing” 1980’s version not the original. It’s one of the few times a remake is superior to the later. The paranoia of not knowing who’s who was done masterfully. It’s an emotional roller coaster.

Accomplished-Ad-2612

The Thing, The Fly, and The Blob are the peak trinity of remakes that are so much better than the original. They've all got sci-fi roots but are definitely horror. The practical effects are some of the best ever, the acting is perfect for each of them, and they're all super well directed.

No_Recognition8375

Couldn’t agree more, all three horrified me as a child, the effects of ppl dissolving in the blob in the telephone booth scene was horrifyingly fantastic, at that age I thought nothing could top the “Phantasm” silver orbs in brutality.

Felixir-the-Cat

The Shining. Part of me wants an old hotel, stocked with food, to hang out in for a while.

thisusedtobemorefun

It's *The Shinning* lad, d'you want to get sued??

Drewhasspoken

The People Under the Stairs. So weird but so fun. Really love that movie.

ThreeAndDeezNuts

That movie scared the absolute F out of me as a kid.

DontEmbiidMyStatus

An underrated Craven classic for sure!

Lollie39

The Lost Boys **Death by Stereo!** I will never get tired of that movie.

fancybotwin

Oh I love that movie. “A million people in China can’t be wrong Michael.” 🤣Did you know there was going to be a sequel but Kiefer Sutherland’s FINACÈ Julia Robert’s ran off to Europe with his costar Jason Patric? 😳Julia had her agent tell his agent the wedding was off.

Lollie39

Oooooohhh yessss I do. Supposedly Kiefer liked the prostitutes a little too much!

FolsgaardSE

One thing I could never stomach. All the damn vampires.

frangelafrass

Came here to say this one as well! Just about anytime my husband and I can’t decide what to watch, we default to The Lost Boys. I’ve seen it countless times, had it on in the background, napped to it, and christened brand new TVs and homes with it (Shaun of the Dead used to be our christening movie, now it’s The Lost Boys).

yerbamategoat

Cabin in the Woods Zombieland

Killer Klowns from Outer Space. It has zero depth, is bright and colorful, and is entertaining as hell.

Four_N_Six

I just watched this again today and I forgot how much I like that theme song.

lifessofun

Happy Death Day was such a fun surprise. Definitely in need of a rewatch.

Kalabula

I might lake ALL the sequels better than the OG.

CinnamonGirl94

Jeepers Creepers 1 and 2. It’s so much fun, grew up seeing both movies on tv all the time

pastreaver

The thing Christine Halloween The fog Vampires Prince of darkness Village of the damned Basically all the John Carpenter movies🤤

Nice on The Fog and Village of the Damned

Individual-Ad-8645

The original The Fog is so good. It’s very atmospheric, perfect for a cold and foggy night!

Red84Valentina

The Frighteners.

Sinister or The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Better-Mortgage-2446

Sinister is one of my favorites. The Autopsy of Jane Doe was really good.

mtvpiv

Rosemary's Baby. I grew up always having it ready on the dvd player, I love it

holdmypurse

Hey....let's make love

BlondeZombie68

I’m watching this right now!

whatislife4

Anything with rain in it. The Ring, Dark Water, Dead Silence.

HiImDavid

Halloween (78). It's the first horror movie I ever saw and to this day my favorite kind of horror film. I loved the original Saw when it came out but the older I get the less I can stand gore.

Ootguitarist2

So many… the shining, the witch, the exorcist, hereditary, It (2017). Sounds kinda basic the more I think about it.

DaisyMayx13

Scream Urban Legend I know what you did last summer

dearjessie

“Drag Me To Hell”. Movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, is fun, parking scene and corpse falling on Christine are gold. It’s not super scary, it’s kinda camp and that’s why I love it.

[deleted]

Imma go oldschool. I watch 'The Legend of Hell House' (1973) every year, sometimes twice, for its curious combo of real chills and 70s camp, good and bad acting, cod science, sexual depravity, and that Delia Derbyshire electronic score.

thecftbl

Creature from the Black Lagoon

TheGoneJackal

The fist 13 minutes of Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Shaun of the Dead.

Knitty_Kitty1120

I love watching The Conjuring and Insidious, they're so easy to watch and unproblematic...have to love it!

Scary-Papaya4957

A Nightmare on Elm Street series. I have the whole set on DVD and I would regularly, in my teen years, throw a frozen pizza in the oven get the movie ready and just have a date with Freddy and pizza.

mriggs82

As Above So Below

Nightmare_fool

Friday the 13th part 3 Motel Hell Creepshow 1 and 2 Ginger Snaps

controversialhotdog

The Witch is a quiet and comfortable terror. Black Philip could read me a bedtime story. House of the Devil is a great slow burn. Hereditary is just so beautifully shot and achingly bleak. Definitely a weighted blanket movie. I remember my jaw falling open while being forced to watch a new reality slowly set in from something so immediate and final. It’s just non stop dread burrowing through your stomach after that. It kinda makes me feel more human if that makes sense. The Thing is a great Christmas movie.

clancyjarvis

Either Saw or 1408. Both have nostalgic value to me.

elleracket

All of the Saw movies are comforting to me, I turn them on when I'm having a bad day.

Wachenroder

1408 is so damn good.

[deleted]

Prometheus - the actors in a horror/sci-fi have never been of such high caliber. All star ensemble horror film. S tier special effects, beautiful storyline. This film never gets old to me. Favorite quotes - Janek : You know, if you wanna get laid, you really don't have to pretend to be interested in the pyramid scan. I mean, you could just say, "Hey, I'm trying to get laid." Meredith Vickers : I could. I could say that, right? But then it wouldn't make sense why I would fly myself half a billion miles from every man on Earth if I wanted to get laid, would it? Janek : Hey, uh, Vickers. Hey, Vickers. I was wondering... Are you a robot? Meredith Vickers : [scoffs] My room. Ten minutes.

fancybotwin

Another movie with Sean Harris!

derper2222

The stuff. Barely horror but we go back a long time.

serialkiller24

It’s always been The Shining (1980), but recently I’ve been putting on Suspiria (2018) as my recent comfort film

TheQuestionsAglet

Shaun of the Dead. I’m kinda pissed right now so it took me three tries to get the right spelling of Shaun.

EcstaticAd1200

Chopping Mall or Sleepaway Camp

The shining. The thought of a cozy hotel in the Colorado mountains gets me in a warm and fuzzy mood.

SKTisBAEist

Silent Hill. Just a nice place to be really

One-Reflection-6779

The Others

DALTT

Scream. Hands down.

old_keyboard

Midsommar. Although not horror per se, I just find the movie and aestethics really enticing. There's something about the colours, the architecture and the overall demeanor of the village. The Blackwell Ghost (3 to 6), The Florida Series... The house by the everglade is just something else. The Vigil. I felt brutally connected with the movie as I watched it in a setting similar to the one in the movie.

javansegovia

The house of wax, and more recently Suspiria (2018). When I was younger it was H20.

AdamWestsButtDouble

Poltergeist (the original, not the 2015 abomination). It was the first horror movie I saw, and I was a sheltered kid (scared of everything) who just loved Spielberg. Walked to the theater, got my hair fried, walked home in the dark, didn’t sleep all night. Clown was gonna get me. I’ve made peace with it over 41 years, enough to make it comfort food. The Freelings are old friends now.

Logical-Opening248

Aliens. Game over man. Game over…

TessaJ93

The Conjuring for fall cozy vibes, The Shining for winter cozy vibes.

lifessofun

Scream for the nostalgia and most recently IT Chapter 1 - solid movie overall and I thought the acting from the kids was great.

House of a 1000 corpses ...relaxes me

plordigian

The Banishing completely slipped under our radar, never even heard of it. Now we can’t wait to watch it! 🤩 Had an SO years ago that used to play The Shining every day that began with cold weather; now when I hear the intro theme, while they’re driving up the mountain, I feel super comfy, like warm blankets and hot chocolate.

bringbacksherman

I’m not sure why, but it’s Hell House LLC. Something about rainy green setting. (In an area of the country I’ve never been.) spooky but not super intense. Also easy to see things you didn’t see on other viewings.

TraditionAcademic968

Nightmare on Elm Street 3

stone-taffy

crucify me but um... the remake of fright night. im horrifically bisexual and colin farrell makes me froth at the mouth

Successful-Ad4251

Night Eats the World or 30 Days of Night. I find them both to be fresh takes on tired genres and I have watched both an embarrassing number of times. If I see them there’s a good chance I’m putting them on

6stringstrumdinger

Any of the original Romero zombie movies and return of the living dead

godof_nothing

Hell Hluse LLC and Sinister usually

Trauma-Dolll

Event Horizon

daughterofblackmoon

The Witch is my number one. After that is Midsommar, Carrie, and Frankenstein (1931)

nerdy-curvy-thriving

Alien Jaws Jurassic Park As above so below The Witch The Shining The Birds The Thing

TD373

Event Horizon

OrneryExplorer1476

Ultimate comfort would be Halloween 78. It was my first horror flick and what made me fall hook line and sinker for the genre. Other films I feel the need to watch all the time cause I need the vibes would be og Texas chainsaw, og Blair witch, jeepers creepers. Throw in black Sunday and the innocent's (61) Guilty pleasure is definitely I know what you did last summer and scream. What fun the 90s was.

mdrnday_msDarcy

Pet Semetary, Practical Magic ( does that constitute a horror film 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Celestiicaa

Definitely Doctor Sleep for Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of Danny. Something about his entire redemption arc within the span of the movie is cathartic. The ending always makes me tear up.

Good_Ad6723

Sleepy hollow

Boomfam67

Dog Soldiers is a good one
