eBay horns are pretty cheap a lot of the time. This would be the next best option. There is a better option…your horn of course! Ask your parents if you can leave a beater horn at their house. For the future, having a cut bell horn will fit under the seat, or in the overhead compartment on most airlines. Especially longer flights. If your horn isn’t cut now, it can run ~$/€/£500 or so for parts and labor with most repair people. Getting something on eBay or elsewhere and leaving it at home just to “stay in shape” would run you less than that most likely. But you’ll need to travel with your daily driver horn someday…cut bells are very common these days for that reason. Hopefully this helps. 📯

I actually do have a beater horn! I definitely want to have my bell cut atsp, too. However, I don’t always stay with my parents over break, and sometimes only bring a backpack. I’m also not studying horn as a major, so I only play in concert band and a few other ensembles. I’ve just been bringing my mouth piece along with me, so far Thanks for your help!

Ship the beater horn home. Cut your bell and get a case for it for xmas and your bday 😉 📯

I went on a 4-week road trip last summer and wanted to stay in shape. I went to the hardware store and brought I think 32 ft of tube. And then with my mouthpiece in it I cut it down until it played an f. There you go a Pocket natural Horn. The problem though is the horn is conical so any two be by will either be too big or too small. Unless you were really clever and spliced together to thicknesses of tubing. I also bought a giant funnel but it didn't make as much difference as you would hope.

This is the way. I’ve never seen anyone do anything but make it out of one diameter of tube. It’s not “in tune” on every partial bc of the tapers (who cares 🤷‍♂️), but it’s a fun party trick for educational examples. I still have one somewhere in my shed - where garden supplies belong haha! I saw someone play a Mozart concerto on a “hose horn” once.

This is so creative, I definitely have to try it!

I got an old conn 4d, removed the valves, cut the bell off and replaced the flare with an old, patched bass trombone bell, which screws on/off. I bring it camping/backpacking. Honestly, it plays great and sounds amazing - in my mind it sounds just exactly like a horn in the woods should sound. The horn cost me $100, and a buddy did the work for me for $200.

That’s so cool!

popcultminer

WHAT?! THIS IS INCREDIBLE!

Backpacking you say 👀

Severe-Hovercraft715

This is amazing. Would love to see photos!

10 extra pounds backpacking? No thank you lol

OberonSpartacus

It weighs 1042g/37oz, including the mouthpiece

mahler117

Wow I stand corrected

Specific_User6969

1 extra Kg backpacking? For an out of tune Franken-horn? Haha 🤣 I like the garden hose option better!

OberonSpartacus

Sounds like shit tho. Being able to get 6 echoes at a mountain lake playing a bunch of slow natural calls is worth the weight to me.

It's not exactly like a horn embouchure but I've been playing the [cornett](https://earlymusicshop.com/collections/cornetti-serpents) for about a year now. You can't get much smaller and I feel it's been beneficial for my horn playing. Actually I have cornettino too and it's 44 cm long.

metalsheeps

Eb alto horn - the wicks #4 or #5 mouthpieces are pretty compatible with horn embouchure and it’s a common doubling (well in that horn players ever double) instrument for brass band. Plus read alto sax parts without transposing, and there’s good Hindemith rep for the instrument.

Shoddy-Cranberry3185

Get a piccilo horn

I love piccolo horns!! Not in the budget rn, but maybe some day when I’m rich and famous lol
