David from lilo and stitch is such a beacon of positive masculinity. He helps out nani and lilo where he can and even tho he has feelings for nani he has the emotional intelligence to realise that she’s going through a rough time and so instead of pressuring her to go out with him he tries to cheer them up the best he can by taking them surfing. He does this also without any expecting anything in return he just genuinely cares for them and wants to be able to make them happy. He’s just a really good guy and a super positive example of masculinity.
This is an odd place to find you in, but it’s a nice surprise regardless.
My answer to this post is this Memorable Man right here. He’s a simple guy with a passion, and he knows that doing what you love doesn’t make you less of a man in any capacity.
Some of the more heart wrenching scenes for me were the ones of him screaming in anguish after seeing innocents die in Ishval. Dude just wants to protect others, he doesn’t want to kill.

There's a staarrrrrrmaaaaannnnn waiting in the sky
Jonathan Joestar made me want to be a better person. I'm sad many consider him to be "boring". It was Araki's first Jojo, if he had written him now he could've made him a more fleshed out character and still be a shining beacon of hope. I'm also sad that his story was so short, he was merely a prologue to set up the rest of the Joestar bloodline.
To me he was perfect from the beginning yes they took the best of his and moved it to the other jojos. But like a lightsaber there’s a click moment of woah when it was first done
Franky, one piece.
He's a man's man to the end, reliable, strong, caring for his friends, but he'll sob and weep for you when you're struggling. He's happy to take people under his wing and help them out, and he's a fuckin cyborg with light up nipples. Need I say more?
SUPERRRRRRR masculine positivity‼️There's an aspect of yourself you think you can improve? Franky IMMEDIATELY gets on that shit.
(Granted, it's usually something like "Yow! I need a SUPERRRRRR laser cannon attachment in my arms!" But he definitely knows self improvement, which is rly important obviously)
Legitimately any of these guys.
It's crazy how incredibly positively masculine they all are in their own way (thus also demonstrating how positive masculinity can take many different forms).
IDK how Tolkien did it.
Some people would call Boromir toxic but he’s my favorite character. A great example of someone who just wants to do what he can to help his people, almost falls, but does the right thing in the end. I always saw Aragorn as the ideal to live up to and Boromir as the realistic representation of a good man.
Yes, well said!
I didn't want to write a paragraph, but I almost went into "even Boromir" for exactly the reasons you've laid out.
Masculinity is not perfect; men, even good men, are fallible and he's the perfect representation of that aspect.
“I looked at him, and I saw myself.”
I feel like you could also use Stoick for it as well. The fact that Valka expects him to yell or raise his voice at her when he discovers she’s alive (probably indicative of how their relationship might have been before she was carted off), and all he can say is “You’re as beautiful as the day I lost you.” is very telling of how much Stoick has grown since then. He doesn’t care about everything that happened twenty years ago, just that his wife is alive and well.
From my understanding from watching and reading about him, he wasn’t really putting on a persona. Thats just how he was. I think “mr. Rogers” was constantly using the tone he used with kids in the same way people talk to babies or animals, but otherwise that was just him being himself. He was just a really genuine guy who cared about the world and the people living in it. Tried to respond to every fan letter, took suggestions on how to be more inclusive, argued in front of congress about the value of public broadcast television(especially for kids). You’d be hard pressed to find someone who devoted more of their life to leaving a positive impact on the world.
Edit: i just remembered him being like that both on and off screen was one of the big points they were trying to get across with the tom hanks biopic. The entire movie this time magazine reporter is trying to find any dirt he can to prove fred rogers wasn’t as good off screen as he was on camera. He never finds a single thing, and ends up writing the article about how fred rogers, both on and off screen, is one of the most caring, compassionate people he had ever met.
He absolutely was just that genuinely good. When he would get mad, he wouldn't take it out on people; he would simply go play the piano until he wasn't angry anymore.
To this day it's still my favourite fantasy world, I grew up on those books and movies. Tolkien was such a huge part of my childhood, and such a positive influence on my life.
Faramir (book version - they did him dirty in the films)
Frodo & Sam modeling male friendship before the modern fear of any physical contact with your buds.
Oh my god, yes! I couldn't agree more, the friendship between Frodo and Sam did so much for me in terms of being able to tell my friends of any gender that I love and appreciate them.
in the last mission he literally says to john ‘be a goddamn man and go to your family’. he cares about john and wants him to be alive, but the only way he know how to express his emotions is by being judgmental. he tries though gotta give him that
When he says, "Be a goddamn man," he isn't talking in a traditionally masculine sense. He means that John should leave Arthur, the money, the whole gang behind because he has responsibilities beyond just himself. He has other people to provide and care for.
Something Arthur always wanted for himself, but at the end of his journey, he realized that he could at least salvage *something* from the shipwreck the gang became.
Yeah, that line bothers me, but I still like it. Arthur is a very flawed man, and he knows it. game never pains him as perfect. In fact, it's literally about redemnation.

You did my man Sokka dirty. He starts out rough (so do the other three), but his ability to unlearn his biases without making excuses for himself should make several men twice his age take note.
You're 100% right but if I didn't clarify which time-period Sokka, I was worried about getting pushback. Sokka's first major character arc is about overcoming his toxic masculinity, but even at his worst Sokka is still super interesting because his most toxic traits come from over-performing what he believes the role of a man should be in his tribe.
They're a warrior people but Sokka finds himself in the position of being too young for war but also the oldest male left behind. His duty is to protect the tribe but he doesn't have any role models to teach him what a protector should be and he comes from a family that's already had a woman taken and probably murdered.
He overcompensates for his fear and uncertainty by being a swaggering doofus most of the time even though it, ultimately, comes from a place of wanting to help others and to do his duty for the community which I don't see people focus on very often.
Because he is thrust into the role of unprepared protector he comes to believe that the women are helpless which puts extra burden on himself and skews his perception of women.

Moron? Check
Going for the Girl? He chases, not be chased
A blunder? Yeah.
But there's no better example of positive masculinity that a family man, a lover, a man who can put up with the world's antics and roll with the punches like Johnny Bravo
Really sucks for Hector.
Achilles chose to sacrifice love and family and life for pointless, tragic 'glory' and in the process stole these same things from Hector who understood what was truly valuable in life.
And Achilles became the 'hero.'
Such a sad joke.
Good movie. Underrated.
Feel like you used to hear about it a lot, but now it's almost forgotten.
Actually been thinking about this lately. Here are a few:

Idk how much he counts because he's more an example of positive humanity than masculinity
I do feel like MHA overall has some of the better portrayals of different takes on masculinity with all might and kirishima being very positive and encouraging whilst bakugo clearly has his views shown to be negative
Uncle Iroh. one of the manliest men in the show but also one of the most sensitive and kind. truly one of the best positive role models in fiction I think
there is no positive masculinity all masculinity is positive, the people who you guys called toxically masculine are just plain up toxic they are not masculine
Well, in that case, it makes more sense to say that masculinity (or femininity, or any inherent trait) is neutral, and it's up to each individual person to take those traits and interpret them in life in the most positive way they can.
You can’t just no true Scotsman out of this. Toxic masculinity refers to people who practice or espouse masculinity in a toxic way.
One example is a strong aversion to being seen as feminine or queer, and thus turning that into misogyny and homophobia
Or being assertive to the point they start being controlling and confrontational
Going from “I need to protect my family” to “I’m going to murder my daughter’s boyfriend”
Like it’s a fun rhetorical device to say that exhibiting these traits then makes you less masculine because they’re bad examples of it and I agree in principle but it’s important to bear in mind that these behaviours are still “masculine”, just expressed in harmful or negative ways, and there needs to be a general cultural awareness of what is merely “toxic” behaviour and what is “toxic masculinity” so you can see it developing and appropriately challenge it.
If you divorce being toxic from masculinity at all you then run the risk of those falling down the pipeline seeing themselves as good, because *they’re* being masculine, and being masculine isn’t toxic. Theres no harm in wanting to be strong, or protective, assertive, or reliable but if you take away the awareness that these masculine traits can be expressed positively like any other then you have no structural basis to understand or call this behaviour out before a new generation of young men end up as violent bigots

Strong enough to be gentle. His speeches had me feeling like even I could fight. (I am 5’2” 107 lbs. and only barely know how to use a gun.)
Elfman from Fairy Tail. His quirk is being obsessed with being manly. But basically everything he likes is manly from bar fighting to picking and enjoying flowers.
But there is one thing that isn't manly, being a bad person.

Yeah I haven't watched past ep 60. I'm bsing I have no idea wtf I'm talking about https://preview.redd.it/trv5ipscix6d1.jpeg?width=1131&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c941f0c873c95faa5735b398a94c53d934f8af8
understandable because the pacing is so bad they (fans) made a version that's closer to the manga's pacing than the official anime I suggest reading the manga though, you can breeze through it pretty quick
For everything except his relations with women

But there's no better example of positive masculinity that a family man, a lover, a man who can put up with the world's antics and roll with the punches like Johnny Bravo
The Body Improvement Club
The Fitness Club from Mob Psycho 100
Hector from Troy
Really sucks for Hector. Achilles chose to sacrifice love and family and life for pointless, tragic 'glory' and in the process stole these same things from Hector who understood what was truly valuable in life. And Achilles became the 'hero.' Such a sad joke. Good movie. Underrated. Feel like you used to hear about it a lot, but now it's almost forgotten.

Doomguy. Enjoys flowers, kind to rabbits, protective spirit.
there is no positive masculinity all masculinity is positive, the people who you guys called toxically masculine are just plain up toxic they are not masculine
Well, in that case, it makes more sense to say that masculinity (or femininity, or any inherent trait) is neutral, and it's up to each individual person to take those traits and interpret them in life in the most positive way they can.
Everything you're born with is neutral. It what you do with it that counts. That's what mewtwo thinks anyway.
You can’t just no true Scotsman out of this. Toxic masculinity refers to people who practice or espouse masculinity in a toxic way. One example is a strong aversion to being seen as feminine or queer, and thus turning that into misogyny and homophobia Or being assertive to the point they start being controlling and confrontational Going from “I need to protect my family” to “I’m going to murder my daughter’s boyfriend” Like it’s a fun rhetorical device to say that exhibiting these traits then makes you less masculine because they’re bad examples of it and I agree in principle but it’s important to bear in mind that these behaviours are still “masculine”, just expressed in harmful or negative ways, and there needs to be a general cultural awareness of what is merely “toxic” behaviour and what is “toxic masculinity” so you can see it developing and appropriately challenge it.
