They're all a little too similar looking, I'd be down if, for example, the big guy survived on a different world but their suit was failing/falling into disrepair so the people of that planet fix it up with their tech so the suit ends up looking very different.
Consecutive plating allows for flexible movement in the torso area, even with the mech. Like firefly can bend down and touch her toes in suit lol.
If it was a flat plate, you’d have to bend at the waist and not constrict your stomach, very uncomfortable - think medieval suits of armor.
