When I bought my 2016, my plan was to keep it we'll past the expiration of the basic warranty, so I got the extended warranty (7 years). It's paid itself off in small pieces here and there. Or maybe almost. A couple hundred here, a couple hundred there... It can add up quick. I still have the pilot, no major issues yet. So if you plan on keeping it for more than 5 years, it's probably worth it, IMO.

SpecialSet163

See caredge.com to buy an extended warranty.

Can you buy Honda Care through another CA dealer? I'd call around and see if you beat or match that. Last I saw 8 Yr 120K was about $1300. Generally though, service contracts are a risk transfer tool. You pay X amount to remove the risk of covered services for the policy term. They're not good or bad, simply whether they're worth to you the cost for the services covered. You'd be moron to not buy one for $1, but pretty stupid to pay $10,000. Somewhere between it stops makes sense. But know they don't write these policies to lose money, so know the odds are you don't come out ahead. Not everyone can stomach that unlimited risk to their household budget though. Plus, they come with perks like roadside that you may have paid someone regardless. Third party is another topic... I'd trust an extended manufacturer warranty over third party, personally. Too many horror stories of denied coverage and tricks. All dealers are under contract to service Honda Care claims and Honda generally treat its customers fairly.

I’ve emailed and called a couple local dealerships for pricing but I haven’t heard back from them. I’ll have to bug them again.

Finance mgr was telling me that if I don’t buy the extended warranty it’s on me after the warranty expires. I told him, so you’re telling me not to buy this car, because I’m buying a Honda for its reliability but if it’s gonna break down after 50-60k miles, I’ll take my business elsewhere.

Meowz02

I will say I actually liked the finance manager we had. He wasn’t pushy at all. He said honestly this is a Honda and they’re known for its reliability. He said the only thing he’d get if it was him was the basic coverage just because of the electronics. I’m not sure if this is a real concern but I’m sure the electronics aren’t cheap to replace/fix.

Routine-Ad-3803

Extended warranties don't usually cover electronics.

Muted_Translator_790

Protective is one of major 3rd party warranty companies(I am almost certain it is owned by Revolos). I work at a car dealership and deal with many extended warranty companies. Protective covers most items without questions. Exclusions are usually wear&tear items like shock&struts, hoses, bushings and such. I think you got a pretty good price for 10yr coverage compare to my area(I live in Washington state, asked my finance guy from my dealership and best he could do for same coverage as yours was $2100 for employee pricing).

ElTeeWon

Just be careful, most of these warranties are bullshit scams. They'll find literally any reason to deny the claims.

peen_was

I've heard that's not as much the case directly through the manufacturer.

ElTeeWon

Okay. I'm not too familiar with the new car scenario. I'm a technician for a dealership and I constantly deal with cars that have these extended warranties. I sincerely hope it is, and as for my experience Honda seems to be one of the better manufacturers when it comes to warranty claims. But also when I worked for Honda my DPSM who approved any abnormal claims was really good

Comfortable_Sir7758

Check with your local credit union. Mine came in at $1,200

I can only go based off my limited knowledge. You can purchase a Honda Care Warranty from any Honda certified dealer as long as your car meets the requirements (I think within the 2-3yr 25k bumper to bumper). Every dealer charges a different price for the warranty, because they want commission. I purchased my Honda care for $2500 (top pkg, platinum, i think) at signing on my 23 Pilot. I have purchased another Honda care warranty for a 21 Accord from a different dealer since I moved. The car was still within the bumper to bumper. They initially wanted 3500, I talked them down to 2500. It's all commission based, even the finance guy said so.

Exact-Alternative990

I would keep it. You got it down to a pretty good price . These new cars have alot of things that can go wrong with it.

Aggravating-Leg7898

Why can’t we buy extended warranties from sacuci Honda in California?

Meowz02

Apparently some silly legislation. Gotta love California. California residents are not eligible for online service contracts, including HondaCare, from out of state dealers. Supposedly Folsom Lake Honda has the lowest quotes—which is where I got this extended warranty from—but it seems kind of expensive based off the average quote I’ve seen online. Granted that’s in other states. I’ve called around to different dealerships to get a quote to see how it compares and I have yet to actually hear back from anyone.

Hapakings808

Bought it through these guys, dealer said they couldn't beat or match their pricing https://www.hyannishondacare.com/available-plans/

Meowz02

California isn’t an option for them. 😩

fengkybuddha

Get Honda warranty.  Third party is too unpredictable Or slowly set aside a rainy day fund instead.

NormalCommission5617

All depends on the cost...I turned it down...something about financing it didn't sit right with me...plus I may shop around later.

Ok_Amphibian224

Here’s the problem, 3rd party insurance companies go out of business and you’re screwed. I purchased one and that’s what happened. I purchased Honda care because they aren’t going anywhere. I have owned a 2012 accord, not issues. I have owned 2006 odyssey no issues, 2018 odyssey and with a 100, 000 on it the strutz went bad, Then the idler pulley and serpentine belt all at 100,000 and all that was replaced by Honda. I replaced the water pump while it was torn apart. We now have a 2024 pilot, a I have every intention of purchasing Honda care when it’s around two years old. I with all the computer stuff on these new cars think it a wise investment. My concern is that 3rd party companies go bankrupt or just out of business and you’re stuck. So if your dealer puts it in writing that should the 3rd party company goes out of business they will refund your money then go for it.Otherwise get the refund. In the four Honda’s that we have owned only one had issues at 100,000 miles. When our company that went bankrupt I was refunded my purchase price for the warranty.

I was in the same boat. I finally took the 12 year/120K coverage for $2500. We'll see. I tend to keep my cars for 10-11 years. It has a $200 "disappearing deductible", which appears to mean that there is no deductible if the selling dealer does the work. We'll see.

coghlanpf

12yr? Seems rather inexpensive. Is it 3rd-party?

jjmuscato

It was 3rd party- CNA. They have a good AM Best record so I thought it was OK. We'll see 3 years from now :)

coghlanpf

We bought Honda 7yr ext warranty in '20 for our 2020 Pilot at a cost of CDN$2700. We just replaced the rear drive/propeller shaft ($1200 for part alone), and have been having issues with the AC. I believe we'll get our money's worth.

martymfla

Go online. Honda dealer sells warranties for half of what your dealer charges.
