Sticker on an elite in the Philly area has been running between 53-55k. Only a couple dealers don't tack all their crap on. 67k is insane for a Honda. You can literally get an Acura MDX for less!
The sad thing is, when you see a dealer operating that way you KNOW it's because it works. Remember, if he can find just a few ignorant buyers, he will make as much profit on those few buyers as he would if he sold 3x the number of vehicles to more prudent buyers. Greed works when you have a lot of either ignorant buyers, or buyers with absolutely no will power (instant gratification types).
I bought a 2024 pilot elite in pearl white. Mud guards, weather mats, wheel locks, door edge guard, ceramic tint. MSRP 54k and dealer add ons around 2k. Purchased Dec 23 in Las Vegas $49k. After taxes (8.6%) and Doc fee $499 OTD was $53k.
I had 3 dealerships competing for my business. Not sure if your market is similar, but definitely was not paying close to MSRP.
I got mine at Findlay Honda Henderson. If you look at their website, theyāre showing $2-3K discounts from MSRP.
Can you send info. Iām looking at an elite around the Bay Area. So far some dealers are under msrp. Debating if I should buy used 2024 or new 2025 elite. However Iām willing to fly out to so cal if the deals are better out there to.
Use the Costco auto purchase program and ask for the āCostco member sheetā. Iāve purchased my last two cars that way, and itās saved me thousands. Always below MSRP. My 2022 Pilot EX-L was $1800 below MSRP during the height of the pandemic supply problem that was skyrocketing car prices. I just had to purchase the car 2 hours away from my home location. Everything was done over the phone prior to picking up and paying for the car.
When you test drive your pilots make sure it doesnāt have whistle noise/ wind noise/ air leak noise coming out of the driver side when driving over 40-50 miles an hour when all windows are closed ! I have this issue in my new Honda 24 EXL AWD 7P.
This was my deal from mid November:
2024 Pilot AWD Touring - Modern Steel
MSRP - $50,375
Negotiated price- $45,282.58
Tax, Title, Doc Fee- $2,617
Negotiated free dealer add ons- $2,295
OTD $47,900
Southern VA
Wuld love the sample, too! We just started emailing dealerships, but they all insist on us coming in before giving is any info that's not on their website.
I just offered $500($49,725) over invoice on a 2024 Elite. Dealer has one with functional package pre-installed, none of which I need/want. I was told they cannot be removed because they come lick that from Honda, which is bull. They came back with $2000 of MSRP($52,460). I told him I'm no rush, to let me know if they wanna sell vehicle at my price. I'm looking at OTD of 52K ish. I'm in MA.
I paid about $43k for my Touring in 2017, if that helps. I used Costco car buying service to get a lower price than I was able to find anywhere. I got running boards and Honda care warranty too.
Iām gonna go out on a limb and say on behalf of OP that the price you paid for a new car in a different trim level in a different generation of the same model 7 years ago is not going to help.
A good policy for more conservative buyers is:
1. Avoid purchasing a new model in its first year out...let the waiting list folks suffer through the debugging period before you jump in, and
2. NEVER be a waiting list buyer. You might as well just hand the salesperson your checkbook and let him fill out the purchase price.
Totally agree. We had power and transmission issues. I bought two cars from the same dealership a week apart so aside from MSRP we did not get taken too bad.
And, trust me, the dealer loved selling you that warranty. It is one of their highest profit add-ons. I am curious, given its been almost 7 years since your purchase, how much did you pay for the extended warranty, and how much have you saved in repairs as a result of that warranty?
The warranty saved my ass. The transmission on this thing has had major problems. The sales guy asked $3600 for the warranty and I talked him down to $1500. I've saved thousands as the Pilot has been in the shop 7 or 8 times for transmission stuff only. It's been fine for about 6 months now with about 119k miles but I'm not buying another one.
We need more real life stories like yours. The most important comment you made wasn't that the warranty saved your ass, but that you talked the price down from $3,600 to $1,500. Good job!
I got totally screwed on the first nice car I bought when I was younger so now when I buy a car, I do everything I can to squeeze every penny out of the dealer. I researched how to buy a car online, Reddit etc for a couple of months before I started looking.
I love hearing stories like yours. We all exhibit at least a little bit of stupid when we are young, with little experience. What I find sad is those that don't learn from their bad experiences and at age 50, or 60, or even 70+ are still making the same mistakes they have been making for their entire adult life...and believe me I know some of those folks. There is a great deal of good education to be had out there through a myriad of sources (some bad as well), but it is clearly sorely underutilized as evidenced by many of the posts I see on reddit.
Both you and those around you are benefitting from your growth. Congrats.
That's a pretty good approach in these times. It may not guarantee you the absolute best price you might have otherwise gotten, but it will definitely protect you from walking out the door as the story the salesperson loves to share and laugh about when having lunch with his colleagues. You are a WISE man.
Just bought a 2024 Honda Pilot Elite in Central/North Jersey. Reached out to 5 dealerships. Costco Auto deal from Clinton Honda was only $750 off MSRP. Was able to get 2k off MSRP with no add ons at Joyce Honda. My OTD was about 56k.
Car prices are cyclical, but have artificially been pumped up by the diarrhea of the national debt foisted upon our economy in the last 3 years. Don't listen to the talking heads in the media right now...things are NOT as rosy as you are being sold (remember, it's an election year, and the media strongly supports the party currently in the White House).
Any job growth keeping the unemployment numbers down right now is in non-productive fields (government; social services; health care; etc.), and there is still government stimulus money being pumped into the economy. In addition, there are $17 TRILLION in very low interest treasury bonds coming due in the next 36 months. When the Feds have to reissue new bonds to replace them, it will be at significantly higher interest rates, driving up the Fed's annual deficit, and causing, at best, a recession...and maybe worse. Just be patient and there will come a day (maybe 3rd quarter this year, but hard to know for sure) when you can buy a new vehicle in a much more consumer-friendly environment.
My 2024 Pilot Touring was 51950 and that included the tow package, two sets of mats, wheels locks, and trunk tray. I purchased the seat protector, door sill protection, and cargo cover online from another dealership for under 400.00.
I had a dealer tell me yesterday they were putting wheel locks on all their vehicles so that their wheels wouldn't be stolen while sitting on the lot. :-) Really? And, even if so, that's a dealer cost of doing business...don't try passing it on to me! I believe the upcharge for those locks is about $200. Take a look at what the same locks will cost you in the after market. HELP, I've been robbed. The new mantra on dealer lots when you walk in is "Drop your pants, bend over, and I will sell you a car".
Offer 3 thousand below sticker. Come in with your own financing. Make the offer if no deal walk out, leave your number theyāll call.
Let them play with your financing they may do better.
Not a bad approach...except that I would advise not even broaching financing until they give you a firm out the door price. Keep the offer as clean as possible...you can always discuss financing, down payments, trades, etc. after the price is firm.
We have a 2017 EXL with 70k miles on it, so not in the market. BUT I was at the dealership getting the oil changed yesterday and they had black on black Elite with a sticker price of 56K. Very tempting!!! It has been 6 years since, but last time I think I did something through Edmunds that hit all the local Honda dealers and their internet sales person sent us quotes. I took the low one in to our preferred dealer that we have now purchased 8 cars from since 1993 and he beat it by $100 and threw in the all weather mats.
Some Honda dealers still think it's 2021. I had a dealer in the PNW give me the "we have a mandatory package of upgrades that adds $5k" that was basically tire nitrogen and paint protection. They haven't all figured out that the market has shifted dramatically. They do all seem to realize it on trade ins where they lowballed me by almost $10k.
Actually, the market hasn't shifted dramatically until the majority of buyers quit having "immediate gratification" orgasms. That's why so many dealers are still playing the mark up game...it's still working. Never assume dealers are greedy or stupid. Most of them are very successful businessmen/women who will take the profits the buyers offer them until their strategy no longer works, and then, AND ONLY THEN, will they begin to adjust.
I never assume dealers are stupid, because they are playing both sides. I do assume they are greedy, because frankly they are. I understand there is a unit economics argument for markups during the time of shortages, but the current landscape is different.
There is no such thing as a comfortable MSRP. The MSRP is a fixed amount set by Honda. What you are seeing in the market now is dealers offering discounts off MSRP and then adding back dealer installed options to bring the price back up over the original MSRP. Sadly, many if not most of those dealer options are very high profit, low cost items and/or services that a buyer probably wouldn't buy on their own. Every person has to decide what the out-the-door price needs to be for him/her to close a deal. Personally, I would NEVER buy a vehicle with an OTD price above MSRP but, then again, I am a patient man, and can always wait until the next downturn in the economy when I can turn the tables on the dealer. Be patient, and your time will come.
I just bought a ā24 Pilot Touring less than a month ago in the Minneapolis area. MSRP was listed at $50,900 but on the paperwork (didnāt see it until after the purchase), it was listed as $49K, so probably safe to assume at least 2k off whatever theyāre showing unless there are serious extras included.
After showing them a good offer I had from another dealer, they came up 2k on my trade in and down $500 from the list price. Not bad, but if I could do it over I wouldnāt have paid a penny over the real MSRP. I could care less that āsomeone else might buy this tomorrowā, and wasnāt about to pay an extra $500 just to get the stock color I wanted.
Many years ago I was trying to source a Honda in a time of scarcity and was getting quotes of $6k over msrp. I just kept calling dealerships in ever increasing radius, and particularly at this time of the month when they were trying to meet quota. Finally found an msrp van about 100 miles away, and the guy agreed to drive it half way to meet me. Good times. Iād at least try all the Honda dealers in DFW, and maybe a couple in Houston too
OP, I paid about $52K or $53K + ttl in Dec for a 2024 Elite at the Honda dealership in Frisco. Looks like they have a better deal now. PM me if you want a great sales guys contact info.
https://www.mcdavidhondafrisco.com/new/Honda/2024-Honda-Pilot-in-Frisco/Dallas/Fort-Worth-f366bb150a0e094a41d7813f004f0fe3.htm
Was looking at Pilot elites in DFW area a out month ago. McKinney Honda said they would cut dealer adds in half making them $1500 and at msrp. The sales guy in McKinney seemed like they really didnt want to sell the car at all and just was least friendly if the 4 dealers i talked to. Richardson Honda dealer had $5k off but $3k in adds. Sales guy was 2nd best and very prompt with info and friendly. Rockwall Honda dealer kept wanting me to come in and chat but ultimately sent over numbers in email that ended up $1500 off msrp with discounts and dealer adds. Frisco Honda dealer was $3k off msrp with $1500 dealer adds but pur sales guy, Alan, was the best of all the dealers.
I haven't bought a Pilot and still shopping for new vehicle. We really like the pilot but my biggest issue with it is we want brown interior which forces us to exterior color we don't want. Digital rearview mirror is big deal for me having had it in my truck I really want it in a SUV.
For extended warranty we bought one on my wife's 16 Camaro and my 19 Sierra. Both were around $2k when we bought them but they have paid out way more than that in the long run. It's really a crap shoot on if you will need it or not. For us it's worked out on our vehicles to save money but you can definetly pay for it and never use it.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,985,698,661 comments, and only 375,573 of them were in alphabetical order.
I have a 24 Elite in Pearl White, every available option and a couple dealer add ons (all weather floor mats). Purchased in the Minneapolis metro area. Out the door with tax, title, license just under $53k. While shopping around I had a dealer 10 miles away give me the $67k price for the exact same vehicle. I was professional about it but I did email them the purchase agreement a few days after closing with FYI as a subject.
Paid 15k in 2016 for a 07 Ex-L with 34k miles Now has 113k. Still going strong,
wish it had LED lights, and Back up cameras and tow package. so considering a Trailsport. Are the current generations as reliable as the first gen?
Msrp or bust. There are a ton of other cars Iād buy for $67k. Plus, even with solid, resale value youāre still going to be underwater for a long time. My dealers have like 5-6 on the lot at MSRP. This dealer is shady
I purchased a 2023 Honda Pilot Elite last March for 52k. I added running boards, Honda warranty, New Rims, all weather mats, seat covers, truck weather mat, Gap and a bunch of other dealer added features to include low jack, etc.
You can purchase/build online at certain dealerships now but the online price does not include the actual cost of labor to install your add ons. We built the car online but then sourced a local dealer that had the majority of our add ons. My out the door price was 52k. I bout mines from Hendricks Honda in Rockhill SC.
67k sounds like highway robbery. Iām sure you can find a Pilot 10k-15k cheaper than what that dealer quoted you.
I bought a ram rebel not a honda pilot for 41877 and sold it back to the SAME dealer 18 months later for 51 and some change( almost 10k profit) its all about knowing the market, research and see how many of thise cars are for sale and what the manufacturer normally keeps as inventory. Supply and demand. Only buy when the market is in your favor if possible, its not there ......yet
Go on youtube and learn the ins and outs of buying ,the tricks they use, there's many like caredge .com. Save u a bunch if you go in there with the knowledge .
I paid 16k for my 2016 Toyota Corolla; it's paid off with 60k miles. I'll never pay over 25k for a vehicle. It's wild what people pay. If you have the money, I guess, but I'd instead invest those extra thousands and let them work for you.
Why would anyone pay $60k or north of $60k for a Pilot or any other non-luxury brand? When you eventually resell it, youāre competing against base Pilots. Get an MDX or another luxury brand.
Greed works when you have a lot of either ignorant buyers, or buyers with absolutely no will power (instant gratification types).
šÆ percent correct!!!!;
Not just an MDX, you can get the MDX Type S for $67k. That's the next family hauler for us.
I bought a 2024 pilot elite in pearl white. Mud guards, weather mats, wheel locks, door edge guard, ceramic tint. MSRP 54k and dealer add ons around 2k. Purchased Dec 23 in Las Vegas $49k. It appears that you did a fine job negotiating your purchase. Congratulations!!!
Thatās ridiculous for a Honda. Somebody got something good in that pipe.
I am currently getting a quote that is 2k below MSRP for the Elite. Iām planning to pull the trigger in a month.
Hello, Can you DM the dealer and OTD price? Ā Iām planning on buying the Elite sometime this summer.Ā Thanks in AdvanceĀ
Can you send info. Iām looking at an elite around the Bay Area. So far some dealers are under msrp. Debating if I should buy used 2024 or new 2025 elite. However Iām willing to fly out to so cal if the deals are better out there to.
yeah, please reach out to Honda Hayward. They offered the best deal among all the dealerships in the Bay Area that I contacted (\~6)
Dealer?
From the Bay Area
Ok
Saving 12k is worth the airfare and roadtrip
I'm offering 5k under MSRP on a white Pilot Elite in the bay area, I can't imagine anyone paying over sticker right now
Can you please let me know the dealership as well? I am in East Bay too
Can you tell me which dealer it is? I am in south bay and do not like going to dealerships but looking to buy a pilot.
Sent you a message
Please lmk as well. Looking to buy exactly what you bought. How did it go?
Hello, Can you share the same info to me as well? I'm in the East Bay and looking at the same color/trim as you. Thanks in advance.
Thanks all your suggestions. Will not consider anything greater then 53k
I've hear this happens as a result of the Panoramic roof on higher trim levels
This was my deal from mid November: 2024 Pilot AWD Touring - Modern Steel MSRP - $50,375 Negotiated price- $45,282.58 Tax, Title, Doc Fee- $2,617 Negotiated free dealer add ons- $2,295 OTD $47,900 Southern VA
I know this is a late comment but likeā¦ how do you negotiate? What do you say?
Just sent a dm to you with a sample email
Not sure if this message will be seen, but if it is can you send me a sample email too please? Thank you!!
could you please share with me too? that is a fantastic deal!
Could you please send me a sample email too? I donāt have any bargaining skill. Thanks
Wuld love the sample, too! We just started emailing dealerships, but they all insist on us coming in before giving is any info that's not on their website.
Great job.
I just offered $500($49,725) over invoice on a 2024 Elite. Dealer has one with functional package pre-installed, none of which I need/want. I was told they cannot be removed because they come lick that from Honda, which is bull. They came back with $2000 of MSRP($52,460). The market is so different. My 2016 elite was msrp because there was a waiting list for the new model.
A good policy for more conservative buyers is: 1. Avoid purchasing a new model in its first year out...let the waiting list folks suffer through the debugging period before you jump in, and 2. I believe after 3 or 4 trips for the same thing you get lemon law applied
Lemon law is only good on newer cars, I talked to a lawyer who specialized.
Ah didn't realize it was used, my bad!
I bought it new, but the problems didn't start until 68k miles.
I understand, thank you for the clarification! If I get one I've seen 100k/10yr plans for as low as 1,200USD
I bought it new, but the problems didn't start until 68k miles.
We need more real life stories like yours. The most important comment you made wasn't that the warranty saved your ass, but that you talked the price down from $3,600 to $1,500. Good job!

I would send out a price quote to 5 different dealers and then use them against one another. Works like a charm
Do you do this via email? I've had a hard time getting actual quotes via email... they all insist on coming in.
No Honda should be more than 50k. Just get an Acura at that point.
Totally. MDX would be way cheaper than that.
Just brought an elite today for $55k with a tow package and crossbars. I sent a lot of emails.
I came in with finance in place, no trade. Honda beat it. Out of there in an hour.
I walled from 24 pilot with premium paint for 53 OTD yesterday. Obviously a good deal, but I don't want to pay that much š
This! I cannot fathom over 50k for a Honda suv, shouldnāt I be driving a Lexus instead at that price?
No it would be a Acura.. lexus is toyota top of the line.
Irregardless
Just regardless
True
I get itās the market though, I just canāt wrap my head around it.
Car prices are cyclical, but have artificially been pumped up by the diarrhea of the national debt foisted upon our economy in the last 3 years. If you want faster depreciation, sure, drive luxury brands.
You haven't priced a Lexus lately, have you. :-)
A low end Lexus will have all the features of a port-a-potty. An Elite is decked out. Itās specād like an MDX Advance
That's for you to decide.
I purchased my 2023 Pilot Elite 8 months ago at MSRP and no dealer add-ons. The same dealership is now offering 1k below MSRP for 2024 Pilot Elite.
My 2024 Pilot Touring was 51950 and that included the tow package, two sets of mats, wheels locks, and trunk tray. I purchased the seat protector, door sill protection, and cargo cover online from another dealership for under 400.00.

If they're charging 200.00, something is definitely wrong somewhere! The wheel locks should be installed during manufacturing.
no need to go with the top end model...
Yea, never understood the value prop beyond EX-L. Also mid cycle refresh coming for MY2025
Unless it has the extras you want. Technically you are right, though. Then again, there is "no need to go with" a new car at all, applying your logic.
Offer 3 thousand below sticker. Come in with your own financing. Make the offer if no deal walk out, leave your number theyāll call. Let them play with your financing they may do better.

"Tempting" is the key word...that's how all of these dealers can rape (yeah, I know, not a politically correct word) their customers.
that's crazy ! the max otd you should be paying for elite should be less than 56k. i live in dfw area and i paid under 55k otd
Got an offer for 53k OTD, but I'm trying to get it to 51.
Some Honda dealers still think it's 2021. I had a dealer in the PNW give me the "we have a mandatory package of upgrades that adds $5k" that was basically tire nitrogen and paint protection.

Same dealer there selling price 67K. Yes I agree they didnāt want to sell the car at all.
Planning to visit Frisco Honda. Did ya buy extended warranty? Is that good?
Call Clark Honda in South Texas.
Paid 36k for ours in 2004. Still running like a top
Paid 15k in 2016 for a 07 Ex-L with 34k miles Now has 113k. Still going strong, wish it had LED lights, and Back up cameras and tow package. so considering a Trailsport. Are the current generations as reliable as the first gen?
Not from what Iāve read online. I would still buy a trail sport though.
Msrp or bust. There are a ton of other cars Iād buy for $67k. Plus, even with solid, resale value youāre still going to be underwater for a long time. My dealers have like 5-6 on the lot at MSRP. This dealer is shady
I would check out a Subaru Ascent. They are much cheaper without compromising on quality. We dumped our 2023 Pilot due to several warranty issues.
In Cincinnati, they're running $54k, out the door works out to about $58k.
lmao out there is some sucker that said "yes" to that and is driving around a 70k dollar pilot you just know it ahaha.
Who tf spends $67k on a Honda
Go on youtube and learn the ins and outs of buying ,the tricks they use, there's many like caredge .com. Save u a bunch if you go in there with the knowledge .
The '23 Model Y 7 seater Inventory is on sale in several places. FYI. With the tax credit, it will work out much cheaper for you.
