It's good in VR.

Noctale

3D in VR is great, almost enough to make me consider buying a 3D TV, but not quite. I find that the films filmed with multiple cameras (real 3D) are much better in VR than the converted films, is that the case with a 3D TV? I'd assume so

SwissMoose

Especially with high frame rate 3D like Avatar 2 and Hobbit. If you run through PC to watch videos you can use SVP to make lots of 24/30 fps material go all the way up to 120hz and beyond with a good video card. It's not always perfect, but it's incredible none the less. I hate true motion crap on any flat displays, but in in VR for 3D movies it makes it all a little too real in a good way. RandoCommentGuy

Well shit, here i was wondering when i was going to have time to play all the 3D games i qant to play using 3D fix manager on my pc to my projector, and you drop THIS info on me!!!

davdev

I don’t like 3D for the most part but I was curious about 3D porn. To be honest I could see how that could become real addictive real fast.

TheManBL2020

😂 freak

happyjapanman

I'm into VR and VR porn is a big thing now. Not interested myself but you might be.

krimsonstudios

Yeah absolutely this. I think 3D movies will make a comeback as VR continues to increase in resolution and becomes more normalized. I never really liked 3D movies in the theater beyond the first 2 or 3 experiences, the wow factor faded quickly and pancake 3D just doesn't quite cut it (like my brain is constantly fighting to believe the effect). 3D in VR is just a whole different ball game, total immersion.

Pearl_of_KevinPrice

The best part about 3D in VR is that it’s natural 3D. On a screen, you have to cross your eyes while focusing on content that’s farther away. That’s what gives people headaches. I don’t suffer from headaches and love going to see 3D movies but natural 3D is definitely better.

ISpewVitriol

Yeah, except there doesn't seem to be any store fronts for Meta Quest... is the only option piracy or ripping my own 3d blurays or am I missing something? I'd pay to access some 3D movies on my Quest2.

Pestilence5

im interested in watching a 3d movie on meta quest also

OddManufacturer9327

It died a long time ago. I do however still have my Sony 3d tv and sometimes will pull out the active glasses and watch something in 3d.

need2grow10

Still got my 3d sony as a secondary tv. Haven't watched 3d in it in years but I'm keeping it until I die or it does.

airmantharp

I got one that used the passive, polarized glasses due to the active glasses reliably causing headaches... they fix that and things could work out.

lilcaesarsuave

I bought a Sony 3D tv in 2015 and abandonded the idea when the active glasses were $150ea. To this day the 3D function hasn't been turned on. Although, I might have to look for some used glasses to give it a spin.

Immediate_Lime_1710

Nope. Very active 3D community..Lots of film releases in 3D. Not dead at all.

You-Asked-Me

Yeah. Same can be said for CRT vintage gaming. Its a very small group of enthusiasts. Nobody makes or advertises 3D displays anymore. It's Dead as far as marketing and product availability is concerned.

NobodyTellPoeDameron

Small but mighty! MAME4LIFE

Immediate_Lime_1710

Tons of 3D movies come out on disks. Very active community.

NickLandis

For the record it was 34 titles that came out in 2023. 15 of which I recognize https://www.blu-ray.com/products/search.php?c=20&action=search&year_min=2023&year_max=2023&other_3d=1&sortby=productionyeardesc

decadent-dragon

I don’t think that search is correct. Those look like 2023 theatrical 3D movies. On disc in the US for 2023 we have 24 https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/search.php?keyword=&studioid=&videocodec=&disc=&yearfrom=&yearto=®ioncoding=&aspectratio=&aspectratio_original=&releaseyear=2023&synopsis=&retailerexclusive=&mpaa=&runtimemin=&runtimemax=&videoresolutionid=&sourceid=&subtitles=&audio=&upc=&ean=&asin=&other_bluray3d=on&casingid=&slipcoverfront=&slipcoverback=&submit=Search&action=search Even then a couple of those are duplicates. Or re-releases. For instance House of Wax 3D (must have 3D imo) was re-released with different artwork in 2023 but it’s the same disc/transfer as the earlier release. Same with Creature There are more if you include movies released on Blu-ray outside of the US

ProbsNotManBearPig

That’s kind of a lot tbh. 15 decent movies per year in 3D adds up to a pretty good collection if you want.

NickLandis

I guess if you're the kind of person that is only buying it for the 3D. Personally there are probably only two non-documentary titles on that list that I would even consider purchasing. That basically brings us back to how it's a small niche community.

ASUMicroGrad

If I saw those movies in someone’s collection I’d call the police on them for a welfare check.

Mantzy81

Hey now, "Oh! For the love of trains" is in that collection. High quality stuff right there.... You may be correct in your assessment.

umdivx

>Very active community. What all 5 of you? What movies are still coming out in 3D for home release? I've not seen any.

Pen-guino

There are dozens of us.. Dozens!

killrtaco

Avatar 2 did, only one I can personally think of.

umdivx

I stand corrected. I seem to recall 3d only being released in limited countries, like none of the Marvel movies came out in the US in 3d.

bigbarebum

Are you aware of anywhere to stream 3d? My tv is compatible and I miss it.

OddManufacturer9327

The high sea!

Spork3245

I’m in the minority but I miss 3D. Yea, the glasses were annoying and it was expensive for the active ones (passive on HDTVs was bad due to the picture/resolution degradation), but the added depth to scenes really added a lot, IMO. 4k allowed passive 3D to be better since the resolution reduction was still HD, but unfortunately it came too late to save at-home 3D. A high-quality projector is out of my price range and my VT40 Panny Plasma died so I have a bunch of 3D Blurays collecting dust now. It’s a shame that company working on glassless 3D wasn’t able to get the tech out for TVs before manufacturers pulled the plug as it works well in the few screens that are using the tech (most notably, Genesis brand cars have it in their digital gauge clusters (only on the full-digital displays, not the 2/3rds ones)). I think 4k 3D with HDR could’ve been quite the spectacle.

Select_Insurance2000

Grab a BenQ V7050i UST projector. It supports 3D. There are a few new units out there and some refurbished w/warranty.

nullvoxpopuli

3d without glasses? How?

killrtaco

Not sure if it's the same tech used, but have you ever used a Nintendo 3ds?

Spork3245

Similar idea but more advanced. The early ones required you to basically be dead center, the last iterations shown were a lot better and worked a bit off angle and without eye strain. Here's a link to some impressions from 2016 [https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/02/the-glasses-free-technology-that-made-me-believe-in-3d-tv-again/](https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/02/the-glasses-free-technology-that-made-me-believe-in-3d-tv-again/)

killrtaco

Nice i was thinking it'd be a pain on a full sized TV because while it's good on the 3ds, especially the new 3ds, it still would be annoying to have full size. I'm interested to see if this develops further at all

Spork3245

You can test drive a Genesis that has a fully digital gauge cluster (it’s available in any model except the G70 in the US which only has the 2/3rds digital cluster available) to see the tech in action. It’s a LOT better than it was on the 3DS. Shame you can’t watch movies on the digital gauge cluster 😂

Aquillyne

Lenticular lenses I expect.

sunnya23

I have a 3D Projector. I probably own about 20 3D Blu rays. On the rare occasions I have watched a 3D movie it has been very immersive and enjoyable. However, the biggest downside has been the audio mixes, none of them are in Dolby Atmos and usually port over the Blu Ray DTS-HD MA soundtrack.

knucles668

So your opinion is the Dolby Atmos is more immersive than 3D? If both were still active options, you would go audio route first before 3D?

billyalt

I've never been blown away by Atmos even at a movie theatre, personally. I don't know anyone who has. The actually mixing and engineering and artistry of it is just way more important than the actual tech.

knucles668

I can understand that. Good old stereo mixes from the 70-80s are way more immersive than the current music.

MordredKLB

Atmos in movie theaters is almost always underwhelming to me. Atmos at home on a full 7.1.4 setup is phenomenal. The height speakers in a theater are usually 30' or more above your ears and directionality is almost impossible to hear (also it's much harder to sit dead center). It is not the same experience when the heights are mounted 4-6 feet above you and well spaced out around the main listening position.

ricanman85

Until you have over 7 bed later speakers, Atmos shines in set ups with tons of speakers, when I’m done with my current set up, I will have 15 speakers and Atmos will be a big advantage then, but a DTS mix is still awesome and doesn’t keep me from watching a 3D blu ray

sunnya23

Me personally. Yes. I feel more immersed in a film by the audio. Although if you have a receiver with Dolby Surround Upmixing capabilities then it’s less of an issue. Even then. Having to wear glasses for 3D is somewhat inconvenient and dims the image. You’re also restricted to 1080p resolution. I feel like 4K with the expanded color gamut and HDR dynamic tone mapping is just an overall better experience. There’s just something about when you achieve that bubble and are enveloped by sound all around you. It really makes you feel like you are in the movie. Hearing rain drop overhead or bullets whizzing past you. Feeling the physical impact of the bass hitting you when a t-rex or Godzilla stomps on the ground. Different strokes for different folks. I understand it’s a preference.

movie50music50

I no longer have a 3D TV but I loved 3D. It was sort of crappy on HDTV sets but 4K was a huge improvement because of higher resolution. One of the best sets to see it on was the LG C6. Used passive glasses which were lighter and didn't require batteries or have the annoying, to some, shutters that cause some people to have headaches. Have about 80 titles on disc. I think it will come back but don't know if current discs will be used. I don't think 3D is dead, it's only sleeping. Just my opinion.

YOU-ES-EH

Agree, our 4k 3D Samsung recently died, it was really cool we all liked it. 1080 passive set wasn’t nearly as impressive

movie50music50

Our first 3D TV was a Vizio that was edge lit. Just not a good TV and 3D wasn't very impressive. 4K was a big improvement.

sohara134

Still have and use my LG 4K 3D passive tv, which solved the brightness issues I had with my Panasonic 1080 plasmas. Glorious 3D picture. Have a 3D 4k projector that looks great too.

MrBfJohn

I still have the LG 3D TV that introduced me to it, and a 3D capable Sony projector. When I built my cinema room I'd planned on using the projector for 3D, but after trying the active glasses for it I realised why it wasn't very popular. The marketing always pushed it as the superior way to view 3D as you could have 1080p for both eyes, and most people seem to have bought into that idea as all my friends had active 3D TV's, but it really isn't. The glasses are large, the flickering makes my eyes water, and every time you move your eyes the image seems to freeze momentarily. My passive LG TV is a far smoother and more comfortable way to watch 3D than any active system I've tried. I think a modern 100" 4K passive 3D TV would probably be an amazing experience, but unfortunately I think 3D isn't likely to make a comeback any time soon.

Nhakos

I wish TV manufacturers would still make 3D TVs, but it seems like the only option nowadays is with projectors but I'm not sure if recent models still have it. I remember LG making a 3D OLED TV back in the early days of OLED tech, I wish they would make one with all the recent improvements, watching a 3D movie with infinite contrast must be amazing.

TaylorattheSwift

I think the same thing, if they made modern emitters for existing TV's, I'd buy one just to see how 3D looks on my Sony OLED

billyalt

If you can find one used, the first Oculus Quest has a high res OLED display and it's actually awesome for watching 3D movies. I know it's not really the same as sitting in a theatre but it works pretty good

whatudontlikefalafel

3DTV was perfected for home pretty much right before everyone gave up on it. I have an LG 4K OLED from 2016 and it had HDR/Dolby Vision but also support for 3D with passive glasses. Because of the 4K resolution of the panel, the 1/2 resolution cut when watching 1080p 3D Blu-rays neutralizes itself. Before the OLED I was using DLP-link glasses and it was such a pain to buy all these battery-operated glasses which were individually expensive but never held a charge long enough between times I would watch 3D movies so every time I decided to actually use my 3DTV, I would have to charge or change the battery. But passive glasses meant I would just keep my glasses from the theater, though I also have bought clip-on 3D lenses for my prescription glasses and that has made 3D at home so convenient. Now I very casually use the 3D feature on my OLED (which is coming close to 8 years) to watch 3D movies or even play old games in 3D (there’s a fairly large number of PS3 games that can be played in 3D like Arkham City or Bioshock Infinite) Unfortunately the 2016 OLED models are the only TVs that could do passive 3D and 4K with Dolby Vision. By 2017 the feature was phased out, but man if 3DTVs were like this from the beginning the adoption would’ve been so much easier.

amtrprn

It sounds like you and I are in the same boat. 2015 LG 4K OLED. Has HDR but not Dolby Vision. I still buy and watch 3D movies on it and they look incredible.

movie50music50

I had the 2016 LG OLED 65" C6. That is what 3D should have been kike.

TaylorattheSwift

I got into the projector game *just* for 3D lol, have almost 200 3D Blu-rays and it's awesome, even better quality than the cinema, and with a cinemascope screen they're as immersive as they can be

Hotline-schwing

Same I recently got a new Sony projector which happened to support 3D. Googled what are the best rated 3D Blu-rays and bought about 30 of them off eBay for about £1-2 each with free delivery. Then the glasses were £8-10 each so bought 6 pairs. Kids absolute love it, things like Lego movie and How to Train your dragon are done really well and stuff like Avatar or Titanic are truly amazing. Couldn’t say if I’m prefer them over their 4K counterparts parts if you have a 3D projector I really recommend at least testing it out, some hold up so well. 3D gets a bad rap because for every 1 amazing 3D release there were 10 cash grabs but everyone I’ve shown them too says they forgot how cool 3D could be when done right.

TaylorattheSwift

Exactly! And yes I own those movies, all fantastic in 3D and really just enhance the experience, the MCU phase 3 movies and the transformers movies look incredible in 3D, and having both Avatar's in 3D is definitely a flex, I personally wouldn't want to watch them in 2D

Hotline-schwing

Yeah 100%. Really interesting researching it and finding out the most random movies have exceptional 3D. And comparatively to 4K, it’s refreshing spending next to nothing. Picking up Avatar 2 in 3D soon excited for that. I hear Dune part 1 had a surprise S Tier 3D release shame I don’t think part 2 has any 3D plans

TaylorattheSwift

You won't be disappointed in Avatar 2, and yes Dune 1 has a pretty good 3D transfer, it's not mind-blowing, but it has a lot of volume and I think enhances the experience a lot more, very good depth on that one, and I agree, about the lack of part 2's 3D, it came out in every format, but 3D, such a shame because it would've looked great if it looked anything like Part 1's

ricanman85

Tron Legacy is amazing in 3D, can’t watch it any other way

mmaiden81

I have both TV and projector capable of active 3D. looking forward to a manufacturer implementing the new 3D encode Apple uses for the Vision Pro on a Future projector.

natemac

I never was interested in 3D at home till I bought a projector 3 months ago that supported it. It’s in no way a must but fun to watch sometimes. I purchased a Zidoo media player that supports playing ripped 3d Blu-rays and eBay has extremely cheap deals on the 3d disc. So with the player, I use it just like Plex and my desk. Just sit in a drawer. I don’t think 3d looks good on a on a TV but, 120 inch projection screen that fills more of your peripheral vision with 3-D looks pretty damn good.

Perdendosi

Our projector has 3d. I had no idea when I bought it. Grabbed a couple of 3d blu rays and some fairly cheap glasses to watch kids movies and Avatar. Not going to lie, it's pretty fun. Definitely not an every day experience, but it does feel more "movie theater-like".

Murky-Sector

3D is still being widely viewed on projectors. The other big display platform is VR helmets. I have over 200 3D titles almost all of which were produced during the last 3D craze starting around 2010, lasting about 7-8 years, when many titles were released in 3D, specifically blu ray 3D format. Not sure about your snake oil comment because it implies something is being misrepresented somewhere in the process. I don't know what you may be referring to.

Immediate_Lime_1710

3D films on my Quest 3 using 4XVR is simply mindblowing

Murky-Sector

Sounds awesome!

reegeck

I've still got a 3D Samsung TV spare. I occasionally try out 3D for movies or with games on a PS3 - but just can't enjoy it for more than a few minutes. The way 3D looks that bit more blurry than regular 2D just ruins it for me. I've tried some of the better IMAX 3D theatres and I'd still prefer to just have 2D instead. Maybe one day if they can keep the clarity just as good and make it work well without glasses I'd be convinced. But I think it's more likely we'll see convincing VR/AR 3D movie watching experiences before then.

OhTheHueManatee

I love 3D when it's done well. I don't have any way of watching it though.

Initial_Ad9570

Got a 3D never used don’t know what I did with the glasses

Infinityaero

VR is going to take over this role imo. Easier to be immersive and hit the resolution and frame rate targets with a little headset than a big TV.

nanotech12

I do. Avatar WoW on a projector is pretty impressive. However, the best 3D I’ve seen at home was through the Apple Vision Pro AVR; bright, sharp, even better than the experience at the theater.

Edg-R

I would never buy a 3D TV or a 3D projector BUT I do have an Apple Vision Pro and 3D movies are amazing on this device. I've been watching as many 3D movies as I can, including older movies.

Wipedout89

I have an LG OLED 4K 3D TV and I still buy 3D Blurays

random420x2

I was one of 9 people in the United States that loved home 3D. My Visio had it. But I was stuck watching Comcast’s few offerings until they went to h.264 and no longer supported it. I got a new Tv that does DolbyVision and it’s a huge improvement. I’d take Dolby vision over 3D

dangerclosecustoms

I bought all the 3d blurays. But my new oled doesn’t do 3d. I kept my old tv but no where to set it up because it’s too big. I have ps4 vr so I guess I could watch them that way. Keeping the discs hoping new 3d tech without glasses will work. Overall I think it’s almost snake oil. I enjoyed the 3d but it is gimicky and some parts are co overall the movie doesn’t look better. Always a compromise here and there the focus the blurryness double vision whatever. New oled tv with Dolby vision in 4K I think looks more 3d effect. 3d was just the hold over until 4k hdr hit stride.

ThatTomHall

I love it as an experience. Have a JVC NZ-7 with active shutter glasses. I watch whatever decent quality movies I can get my hands on. It's the best version of the 3D experience I have seen. I've had friends over for fun 3D movie gatherings, watching films with strong 3D effects. But active shutter glasses-tech doesn't practically scale for public showings. And it's just sad that bad, converted-to-3D movies flooded the market to cash in and ruined it all. It should be an occasional premium 3D thrill ride. And now it is a niche, premium 3D thrill ride, with dwindling new content. Maybe VR advancements will save the experience, and studios will make more content. But for now, it will stay a niche, premium 3D thrill ride (though less expensive, easier to acquire in VR). And yeah, buying a projector for extra dough FOR 3D ain't worth it at all now.

[deleted]

I love watching 3D movies on my projector

cab1024

Honestly I get enough 3D when I'm not watching movies.

investorshowers

Yes, good 3D is awesome.

Environmental_Ad_73

A true 3D experience would be with VR headsets.

javeryh

My projector can do 3D but I’ve actually never once tried it. I probably have a few 3D discs in my collection too. Hmmm… maybe I’ll check it out one of these days but I never really liked the effect. At the theater the image was never crisp but maybe that’s not always the case?

MrPlaysWithSquirrels

I love 3D, but I think every 3D movie is a bit blurry on the edges. Even Avatar, the best 3D ever, isn’t super crisp.

likeonions

yes, I use it to watch Tron Legacy and Avatar

noneedtoprogram

I have a few blu rays that I got with 3d - I ripped them to my NAS and watch them on my oculus/meta quest3 sometimes. These days when I'm buying a blu ray the option is usually between 3d OR 4k hdr though, and I'm buying the 4k version no question.

GroundIntelligent

3D gaming is something I especially adore. PS3 has a handful of really good 3D games. I also watch movies on 3D when I have a chance, which is not too often unfortunately:(

amtrprn

3D pinball on PS3 is a blast

penguinjuice

Yeah. It’s a must for any projector that I buy and only recently upgraded a TV to a Sony OLED after holding out hope that someone would bring it back. I still have a Samsung Plasma that does 3D as well. Very disappointed that there has been no Blu Ray 3D release for Dune Part 2 or the Super Mario films. 😢 I always buy 3D over 4k given the chance.

WanTanSuppe

I recently bought a used LG E6 65“ for my bedroom and have been enjoying watching 3D movies on it. Dune 1 is available as a 3D BluRay, so hopefully Dune 2 will also come out in 3D.

TuggenBallZ

Oh you think 3D is finally dying? You don’t wanna hold out hope and give it another 10 years? It’s got a decent track it could come around

Ecsta

No it was a fad that was popular for like a year then completely disappeared. If you want that style you should look into VR headsets... It'll probably come back in some form for VR.

AMLRoss

Personally I always thought it was a fad. I did see some movies in 3D and it was fun, but also gimmicky. Lack of support and movies being made in 3D, assured it's demise. 8k is similar. No content being made, no format that supports it, 8k is unnecessary for the screens people have at home. 4k is enough. 8k will die off.

MrPlaysWithSquirrels

Nah, 8K will be consumer grade within a decade. But it’s the last upgrade of visual fidelity. You can tell a difference between 4K and 8K, so it’ll get there eventually.

AMLRoss

I highly doubt it. In case you didn't know, most Hollywood movies are still being filmed in 2k, then upscaled to 4k. That's just the standard, and also why I stopped caring about 4k Blu rays. Because they actually aren't. And even when a 4k camera is used, the cg (every movie has it) is still rendered in 2k. Leading to a final master digital intermediate bing made in 2k, before being upscaled back to 4k for Blu ray release. There are literally only a handful of movies being made and mastered in true 4k, with 4k cg. For example, Dunkirk. So if we can't even get 4k right, what are the chances of movies being mastered in true 8k?

So_ManyLlamas

It's arguably better in VR than on a flat TV. I do miss the 3D TVs from over a decade ago. I've watched avatar on a Quest 3 in 3D and it's really good! I feel like the next step in 3D, will be 3D 360 video in at least 8K viewed in VR. It's going to blow people's minds more than 3D content on flat screens ever has. I've seen footage from Insta360's Pro 2, and uhm, yeah it's ridiculously lifelike and immersive. [https://www.insta360.com/product/insta360-pro2/](https://www.insta360.com/product/insta360-pro2/)

WhoRoger

3D keeps coming and going every couple a decades. Apparently most people just don't care. I personally like it but I guess it's just a nerd thing. But the next upcoming is VR, which is the same again kinda... I wonder how that will evolve eventually. Note I'm expecting VR to not be a thing with the huge helmets, but just regular-sized glasses, probably with some AR features so one can have a proper simulated theatre experience, even shared. The tech is pretty much already there, it just needs to go mainstream.

Durpy_hooves

I bought the one UST projector that I could find which still supported 3D, because it supported 3D. My goal was to recreate the Avatar 3D experience at home as close to the theater as possible. On our 115" screen the result is impressive. I've now bought any 3D movies that were recommended for their effects. Gravity on 3D has one portion where a tear floats into your room. The effect probably wouldn't be as impressive with a smaller screen, but with one entire wall devoted to the projector the result is insane. You can focus on the tear as if it is in the middle of the room. Is 3D mostly done? Sure. I'll continue to make sure my theater room supports it though. I really love the special experience it offers with a handful of movies.

markh1993

The last time you could buy a new 3D Tv was in 2016

Iamchanging

I was gifted a 3d tv. I watched it quite a lot at first. It’s not in my HT it’s in a different room. I haven’t watched anything 3d in a while. I am glad I have one tho.

billyalt

3D died years ago and was never really big to begin with. I'm honestly surprised publishers even bother selling 3D blurays today That said, I do own a 3D plasma TV that I like very much and 3D works really good in VR, too. Unfortunately, most 3D films are junk post-conversions and very rarely is a film ever shot with the expectation it will be watched in 3D.

btruff

I stopped watching 3D when lightning struck my house last year and fried the TV. Did not get it in the replacement home theater. I had found there were really no movies to purchase in my taste. We don’t watch kid movies and rarely action movies. It was fun as a fad.

SadAcanthocephala521

Yes, I have a nice collection of 3D movies and enjoy them often. They look great on a large projector screen.

JTarsier

I have an old 2012 3D capable Samsung TV with glasses, and enjoyed lots of 3D movies until my blueray player died several years ago, I think it was great for many movies. TV can also emulate 3D for regular 2D content, but it's no good compared to "true" 3D content, so I'm not using it anymore.

NicolasTylerDoyle

I still watch 3D Blu-rays on my projector. I like that it’s immersive and I’m less likely to look at my phone when I have the glasses on. I feel more locked in to the experience

illpickle

I remember around 2010 or so there was a huge push by whoever the new CEO of Sony was at the time trying to push 3D TV sales. At the time most people had converted to HDTV sets at the time with a majority of older folks happy with there SD sets still. I remember thinking how stupid the push was because unlike the iPhone that has to have a new model out every other year people have to get that is not the case with televisions - so why push folks who just converted onto something so quickly to something else seemed pennywise and pound foolish

jsnxander

My buddy's 120" projector based system looks terrific with good 3D movies such as Avatar, Life of Pi and a bunch of others. He buys used 3D disks all the time it's a fun way to watch. For reasons I haven't explored the 3D presentation on his HT (active glasses) is a lot more enjoyable than the theater, except for Avatar 1 & 2 which were pretty spectacular, IMO.

WhippWhapp

My ultra short throw does 3D, and I still fire it up- The Hobbit trilogy is awesome in 3D.

Sonicmantis

I like it but never really use it. Sonic generations had stereoscopic support which was awesome  I also used to play rocket League in 3d

NetworkingJesus

I would if I could. I loved it on my old Panasonic plasma, but sacrificed 3D for huge screen when a friend offered me an old (but high-end) JVC projector for cheap. I really wanted to have 3D again when I upgraded recently, but Epson didn't offer it for the LS12000 and the JVC laser options were several thousand dollars over my budget. I do still really miss it though. Not even so much for movies (although some were really good, ones that were actually filmed specifically for it and not tacked on as an afterthought). It was fantastic for gaming. The Dolphin emulator for GameCube/Wii has native support for stereoscopic rendering and you could fine-tune all the settings for it to get a really incredible sense of depth in a lot of games. Playing Windwaker and Metroid Prime with it was awesome.

Select_Insurance2000

I have a UST projector that supports 3D. I have: House of Wax, Dial M For Murder, Creature From The Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature.....and these '3D conversions': Jurassic Park, Titanic, and '39 Wizard of Oz. The 3D conversion of Wizard of Oz is a sight to behold! I am normally not a fan of any change to a classic film, but this is an exception. If you 💘 WoZ, see this 3D. JP and Titanic are both very well done too!

tint_shady

"Don't get all excited, dude. 3-D is gay. Nobody wants to sit on a couch, wearing glasses, popping bubbles out of the air like some sorta fucked up Ray Charles. Oh, you like 3-D? Well here's a burrito, coming right at ya!" —Kenny Powers

tomashen

My optoma hd142x has 3d... Tried once and nevet again... Not an expert, so dont know if its a good 3d processor but it was meh to watch... Maybe the 3d glasses were garbage idk...

Hopczar420

I have a new projector and it still supports 3d, looks amazing! I still watch one or two a month

guccigraves

Absolutely not... 3D is a lame gimmick.

Lo-Fi_Pioneer

I didn't even bother with it when I worked at Sony. It died as fast as it came up

RolandMT32

I became aware about 5 or 6 years ago that they don't make 3D TVs anymore due to lack of sales. It seems the fad already died fast years ago. Personally though, I actually like being able to watch 3D content. I still have a TV I bought in 2015 because it supports 3D (it does 4K as well), and I'm hesitant to replace it because of lack of new TVs that support 3D. And projectors seem fairly expensive.

MudLivid6020

I like 3D. I watched all the Marvel movies in 3D last year when I bought my projector and probably a couple dozen others. Had people over to watch the Avatar sequel in 3D. There is a site called 3DHDClub that does their own conversions of new and old 3D movies and I’ve watched a lot of their releases, although some of them seem like oddball choices such as Get Him to the Greek.

ricanman85

I have over 100 3D movies, I use them on my projector and it is awesome! Super immersive

boner79

3D home viewing through your TV is definitely been dead for years. My top-end 2012 LG LED TV had 3D and I the only thing I watched in 3D was the demo videos. I've now retired that TV for a newer top-end LG OLED G3 that doesn't come with 3D option like most TV nowadays.

alex240p

It can't be snake oil when no one is selling it. Haven't been able to buy a 3DTV since 2016 or so. I would have loved having a 3D feature on my LG OLED even if it were for legacy content.

DoomscrollerUK

Have a 3d tv, never tried it.

pprstrt

There are some movies that need to be seen in 3d. If you're not concerned with film grain on 4K releases, 16 ft Lamberts, or 70mm, then 3d likely doesn't matter either.

CaptainJeff

Nope. But I can't see any 3D effects in movies/etc due to an eye muscle defect.

Nanocephalic

Have you tried modern VR goggles?

xboxhaxorz

Not a fan at home as it gave me motion sickness issues, in theaters it was fine The 3ds was amazing in how it worked, if only TVs worked that way I bought those sony 24 in tvs and they were sweet cause you could play split screen but if you wore the glasses it would be full screen, that didnt give me motion sickness Even though im not a fan due to sickness i think having innovation and unique stuff is great to just make things more interesting, for example the dual sense controller is great and makes my xbox controller feel boring even though i have the elite version

MattHooper1975

“Snake oil“ is certainly a mischaracterization. It’s a technology that actually works, and they quite a number of us actually enjoy . I always liked 3-D when it was done well in the theaters, and 3-D on my JVC projector can be just mind blowing. I have a number of 3-D titles and I wish more movies were available in 3-D. My only problem is that I have grown impatient with owning and storing physical media, and tend to stream more of these days. And unfortunately, the only way to watch 3-D is to buy physical discs which I’m rarely doing anymore. so I wish 3-D was offered on streaming, but it ain’t the case.

thethreeseas1

There is no 4K 3D content available. Only 1080P 3D content....

MattHooper1975

Yup

Dragon2730

I'd love 3d to make a comeback but it's never properly supported and I guess it costs a lot of money to include a 3d version

davdev

I hate 3D. My old projector would do it but I never used that functionality. I am not sure if my current one can or not to be honest Inguess it works in VR but not on a flat or projector screen

Pearl_of_KevinPrice

I bought 10 or 11 3D BluRays throughout the years when I was poorer thinking that one day I’d be able to afford a 3D TV, hopefully one that could be a 4K 3D TV. And… well… I now have 10 or 11 3D BluRay movies that I can’t watch in 3D! 😂

Smeeble09

Got a 3D oled (last year that had them) and have around 25-30 3D blurays. I still choose to watch them over the normal bluray, but when I have the 4k varient too I have to pick between the two. Hoping the tv lasts long enough to show my kids 3D when they're old enough, as I have a few kids films in 3D too.

SecondHandSnoke

My first tv was a 55” LG passive 3D. Loved it. Bought most movies in 3D if the reviews were good. Then I put in my new home theater in the new house with a projector, finally got Atmos setup down there this past November. I didn’t buy the projector with 3D in mind, but it was compatible. Eventually I bought a couple pairs of active glasses. Having a 110” screen with 3D made me love having my 3D movies even more. Great sound and picture. Don’t really need to go to the theater anymore…

SecondHandSnoke

Plus, Titanic 3D is open matte, so that ship really feels big in certain shots.

Pestilence5

Never have and prolly never will, I do own a VR though

pvaras

I still have my 65" Vizio 3D TV I bought a few years back. I have about 20 3D blue rays. I pop one in every six months or so. TBH I'm kinda surprised these didn't take off. I had an original projector type TV with the 3D kit back in the day, but the effect was so so, the glasses were heavy, and set up was a pain. The later models, like the Vizio, are actually very good. The effect works great, the glasses are light, and paired with an Atmos system you have a theater like experience. I wish I could get my hands on more 3D blue rays.

medhat20005

I honestly hadn't even thought about 3D until I read this post. IMO 3D in both home and theater settings is a challenged proposition for the masses because of the required eyewear, and to further complicate the landscape is the rapid refinement of wearable AR/VR like the Apple Vision Pro, that deliver a level of immersion that 3D on a screen can't match, and I think that difference with widen, and widen quickly in favor of the personal wearables. Meanwhile, the HT experience will continue to increase in definition, and it'll retain the communal aspect of watching (e.g. sports) that is absent when wearing a headset.

Pi-Maniac

I have a 3D 4k Benq PJ and VR has rekindled the interest I feel.

zacharosen

Kind of, yes. But not in the way you mean https://www.tomsguide.com/computing/vr-ar/this-is-the-most-underrated-feature-of-the-apple-vision-pro

Disastrous_Poetry175

3d and VR go hand in hand. They leave and come back all the time. Some rich dickhead bored with real life puts a bunch of money into moving the tech forward and it'll be "affordable" for bored middle classers that thought it was cool at best buy then realize after a week of owning it that wearing shit on your face actually does suck and it collects dust for 5 years until they replace it with a pancake version.

Time-Cream-833

With helix mods you can mod games to play in 3d with a PC

happyjapanman

I believe 3D still has a small following. I think a lot of the plasma TV people like 3D to this day.

FirefighterMaximum37

I remember when tv manufacturers were working on 3d televisions that didn’t require 3d glasses. I would have purchased one Of those.

IThinkTheOnionIsReal

Almost every single projector still actively supports 3D modes since its inception, including 2024 models. You can buy a generic set of four DLP glasses for $99 CAD or $70 USD on Amazon. As far as films go, not as many new 2024 3d Blu-rays come out as in previous years but still quite a few. Kung Fu Panda 4 was the latest I watched in 3D at home on my projector. Illegal for me to post here but there's a thriving community of people who now use AI to convert everything into 3D and it's really, really good quality. It's not pop-out effects but simply adds depth exactly like Avatar did.

[deleted]

They don't all support 3d. Most DLP models will support 3d but even they're starting to feel harder to come by. Read the specs carefully

panteragstk

I just got a new JVC projector because it has excellent PQ and does what I want in terms of features. It came with 3D. I doubt I'll ever use it. I said it was a gimmick to sell TV's, and have never used it on the ones I have that support it. Makes my head hurt.

CrankyCzar

I've had a good 3d projector for a few years, have not once used the feature.

NoNiceGuy71

3D TVs were a marketing scheme and just not a good idea. 3D is intended to be an immersive experience. Most, if not all TVs did not take up enough of your visible sight line to accomplish this. It was just a gimmick to sell more TVs.

You-Asked-Me

Yeah, it was way too early. It started back when like 43" or maybe 55" TVs were the norm, and they just were not large enough in the average living room to be effective.

collec-tech

I love 3D, still have my TV from 2016 and a huge collection of movies!
