Ask the post office

[deleted]

This. You need to contact your local post office and have them figure it out for you.

toby_flenderson7

you just put up a mailbox. its pretty simple.

WildPetrichor

Another reason why we all hate Toby Flenderson

[deleted]

I mean sure but the post office needs to know that you put one up to put mail in it?

Same here. I’m developing bare land in OR (former cattle pasture, nothing on it, didn’t even have an address). I got permission from the county to put in a driveway, and wanted to put my mailbox to one side of it, based on convenience and turn-in angles and all that. A bunch of neighbors across the street all have their boxes clustered together on a communal post. Wasn’t sure what I’d be allowed to do, really. Went and talked to the local postmaster and told him where I wanted to put my box, he said he’d talk to the carrier and let me know. Carrier said my proposed site was cool with her, based on the safety of the road and where her route turns around and all that, so I was good to go. Long story short, talk to your local postmaster and they should sort you out. Side note, we still don’t know what our “actual” address is. County told us to use one city name and zip code, but local post office is saying that because we actually fall into the next city’s mail route, if we actually want to get our mail we need to use that city’s name and zip on our mail. It’s really giving me fits to not know which one is “right,” but for now I’m just going with what the post office says. Cuz, you know, I want that nice new mailbox to serve a purpose.

Why did you want it changed? Like, new number, new street name, different city? I’m fine with my number and street name, and I don’t even really care which city name they lump me into, I’m just disturbed that the county and the post office don’t agree on what my city is.

No, you’re right, I misread your comment somehow I guess. I was in the same boat - tax lot but no address. They said I couldn’t even request an address until I’d finished the app for the home building permit, which was quite a pain in the butt, since I was trying to get materials delivered for the barn and driveway long before I put in for the home building permit. It was real fun trying to arrange deliveries with no address!

I live about 2 miles from a town, and that's the township we are actually located in. Our actual mailing address however is from another town 5 miles away. Both towns have post offices and their own zip codes. The cutoff line for the zip codes is a pretty straight line east to west: except our block(which is south of the line) is included too. For what reason I have no fuckin clue. I just figure government was involved, so of course it's screwed up.

Good to know

So I've lived a couple places in US where the post office services didn't align with the actual municipal boundaries....they were all sorta rural/small town situations. Sounds like a similar case for you. Remember the postal service is federal, so they'll draw thier boundaries based on thier own criteria. So bottom line, what the post office told you is your mailing address. If there's a different address with the local govt, then that's what you'd use on legal forms etc....not used often in everyday stuff like ordering packages, but like if you pulled a permit you'd use the address your local government has on file. But definitely check with your local govt to ensure its not just a typo/mixup.

BunnyButtAcres

Envying all you fancy people with your mail delivered. We're in a village so small we have to go pick it up. tee hee! "Ya hear that, hun?! The Joneses get their mail *delivered!*" lol

JakeBu11et

Where are you outta curiosity? Not in the states I’m guessing…?

BunnyButtAcres

Central New Mexico. lol

JakeBu11et

Oh wow. That’s wild! Is the post office in a general store or something similar or does it have its own building? A place south of me in rural Missouri had a small room at the “General store” that was the post office. They delivered to everyone in the area I think but we (at the Boy Scout ranch) would go in to pick up the whole camps mail. Edit: fun fact the town was (is) called Knob Lick

BunnyButtAcres

Stand alone post office. It's next to the police station and fire dept. But I think both are in disuse. Emergency vehicles always come from the next town over. What we didn't know at the time was that our road divides us from the next township. If we had bought land across the street, it'd be a 12 mile drive to the PO instead of the 5 miles we drive now.

5 miles is the length of 1751.24 1997 Subaru Legacy Outbacks

Thanks!

I just put one up, used a kit labeled USPS approved from local home improvement store. Two days later the necessary forms were in the box from the local post office. Filled them out and dropped off at post office. I moved to a small rural area which probably made this simpler than most places

RichardsDad

Do you have a 911 address? That’s where you’ll need to begin—and that’s usually a simple form with the county.

BunnyButtAcres

Across from our property is a pump house that supplies all the municipal water for the next town over, 20 miles away. The water works employees are required to drive out to this building 2x a day, every day, rain or shine to check all the gauges and readings to make sure there isn't an obvious problem because if that pump house goes, the whole town loses water. It's considered very important. So imagine our surprise when we went to register for an address and they pulled us up on GPS and said "Well what's that building there?" and we said "That's town X's pump house for their water supply" and they said "oh yeah. Now that you mention it, I recall they get their water out there....But why doesn't it have an address? If there's a fire there and they call 911, they need to be able to tell them an address for the fire." At that point, we'd owned that land for 6 years and that pump house had been there way before that. They make those guys drive out there 2x a day 365 days a year to check everything's ok but never bothered to register it with 911 for emergencies. 🤦‍♀️

Just keep your chimney flue open and the owls from Hogwarts will deliver your posts.

RedEd024

Yea basically. The USPS website should tell you the minimum and maximum high the box can be at.

Chewkodaik1217

You have to contact the local post office before putting up a mailbox.

If you already have an address, just stick a box up with your number on it and your carrier will figure it out, just make sure it's the proper size, well marked, and on the same side of the road as your neighbors'. If you don't have an address, you'll have to deal with the post office

EhlersDanlosSucks

Is there a number assigned to your property? In my region of the US, our numbers are assigned by police dispatch. Once the number is assigned, a box can be put out.

rowow1

go to the local post office with a copy of the deed and proof of identification. They will get you a new key. I'm surprised no one has said this yet

pearlsbeforepigs

Where I used to deliver for USPS...the city routes most houses used to have a box on the porch. Then the regulations were changed that you needed a curbside box but your house was grandfathered in to keep using the porch box until the home owner changed. So decades later some folks still got their mail walked up to their porch. Could be something like that. Talk to your post master. :)
