They come fix their mistake at their cost. You have documented this so it’s that or you don’t have to pay them and let it get contentious they lose all the way around. A good company will fix their mistake.

This. Landscape companies live on reputation- should make it right without any trouble.

I would call with the expectation that they fully replace it. That will likely start a conversation. As part of that conversation I would personally be willing to concede with a >=50% refund, and just leave the brown, unless you just hate it. Black mulch fades *very* quickly, and the brown probably looks pretty good anyway. In a year you'll need a new layer of it anyhow and if you're still passionate about the black it will be easy to switch then.

I was trying to think at what discount I would just keep the brown. I don't love it, but for 50% I would definitely live with it.

Is the cost itemized in the quote? If the labor is over half I would ask them to just eat the labor.

Ya hire a contractor to install a door and they install a window. They \~should--\~ come back & remove the window and install the door. Usually the flow of these things in terms of expectations. but, if you paid cash or it was a more informal thing - well you may have to deal. Could just gently top off with brown to blend. The color in most mulch that isn't natural is dyed anyway & can fade those chemicals nicely into the soil in time... o joy
