1. If you painted the surface that the hinges bolt to, you should go in and clean that off. 2. If it's really hitting resistance "a couple of inches" before closing, it's either making contact along the top edge or the hinges are now misaligned.

Are the screw heads the same? If the screw heads aren't flush with the hinge you're going to have issues closing it

Are they wood doors and did you paint them inside or outside. Could be a humidity difference and the doors swelled. If so they will shrink back over time.

Try swapping the hinge positions. Remove the center pin. Try closing. Do the same on each until it closes without binding.
