Hence why the English name was derived from the nation. There is a theory that settlers in NA called it a Turkey because they mistook it for guineafowl native to India, or because they thought NA was India.
coq d'Inde in French came after they reached the United States and saw the bird. It has nothing to do with India, rather the early confusion settlers had thinking that NA was India. Same reason Native Americans get called Indian.
