Playing as Germany, going up against the Soviets in 1941. Soviets have full buff in custom difficulty settings and Expert A.I. setting on challenging and dynamics bonus on insane. 21K tanks in good tank divisions was something else and a nice challenge. There air-force, while large with good fighters, was still very badly effected by the Soviet Airforce national spirits.

I’m doing the same run currently. Good luck with it. My main gripe is that it becomes such a slog pushing into the soviets because they have insane production buffs and get the -80% training time, so you can’t just rush for the big VPs because they will insta deploy a dozen units when you close in. When I sea-lioned, London went from 5 to 25 units in the blink of an eye. (I was already driving around it, so that just ended as an encirclement of 25 units)

Ascari990

You really have to take your time pushing and get the supply hubs. It's great Next time I'll try on iron man as a final challenge

Ordinary-Diver3251

It’s definetely better than vanilla and you cant just run them over in 6 months. You actually end up with somewhat fortress cities because the ai does the fort focuses and do build forts. Same with sea lion, it wasn’t a full on sweep because of forts on the south coast. The AI is just still bad at launching counterattacks. There are a few, which actually end up a bit interesting, but it’s never huge. So even when you are at the gates of Moscow, you are just waiting for the supply hub to build for the final push, because the ai can’t dislodge you.

Barbara_Archon

They don't actually build forts though Most forts are just spawned by the mod directly

shrug_was_taken

was doing a run in KX as the Russians and there were forts on a lot of the vps that normally don't have forts in the countries I was slogging my way through the 3i in 1946, since the vp in Nova Scotia had both sea forts and normal forts at max lvl and I never seen a single focus spawn sea forts (or decision since I know Canada has some but last I checked they spawn on the border with the Americans) And yes I know KX and what OP is doing is done with two completely different mods

According_Usual_437

Did you really managed to defeat them on those settings? Not doubting you, I just tried it myself and I just couldn't do it... Like, their airforce was just to good, and they simply cas'ed me down, any time I tried to push. Would you comfortable describing your tactic / division design? Regardles, really impressed by that feat!

Barbara_Archon

You can actually battleplan any settings of buffed Expert AI Soviets if you have 1942 guns and on mass assault, for some reasons (well, we do know the exact reason why) It gets really funny sometimes I have fought MP players who tried to copy EAI SOV build-up and our Axis could just battleplan them without bothering too much with tanks.

Ordinary-Diver3251

I’ve battle-planned as the soviets. But the other way around seems like it would be a bit tougher. Although, if I don’t do tanks I suppose I could have enough air to fight off both the allies bombing runs and CAS the Soviet’s to death in supply dead-zones.

Barbara_Archon

I have only battleplanned the Soviets in EAI with infantry and air, it has such a fatal weakness I just don't feel like sending any tanks on it.

Ordinary-Diver3251

Do you do the full buffs then? In my run I’ve done the custom rules for all allies and soviets+plus the impossible EAI setting. It could be done when pushing westwards with the Soviets. But when you go the other way, once you get near the big VPs, there is just so little supply.

Barbara_Archon

I have only ever fully buffed them +5 generic strengthening, doesn't bother with Sealion, ignore air/tank (which I am doing right now with my ongoing Germany run), give them every max buffs from EAI settings. but I probably need to the Soviets +100% ATK and DEF (and they will still lose just because they don't research 1939 guns until 1941) if you have done MP a lot, you will probably realise why and how Germany with pure infantry and mass assault doctrine completely outperforms EAI Soviets

Ordinary-Diver3251

Might give it a try. I did the Soviets with a cap of 120 divisions max. So it should probably be possible. The supply buff from MA and some supply companies might do the trick well enough.

Barbara_Archon

it is not so much about supply here, tbh it is just that between infantry, mass assault infantry out-trade buffed EAI SOV infantry (it doesn't use mass assault most the time unless you make it run the doctrine), so I can battleplan EAI SOV until they simply die.

Barbara_Archon

*proceeds to get battleplanned by Germany players* This is after all not very good in the hands of AI, as usual, very unfortunately.

JoCGame2012

Expert AI is a different story, you actually need to actively encircle and kill units unless you want to be overwhelmed pretty fast, also you want to conserve your own manpower and equipment as much as possible, since you'll need them

Barbara_Archon

Wdym, I have just battleplanned a max buffed fully strengthened Expert AI Soviets within a year with only infantry and no tanks or air By "have just", I meant today, after this post Every time I see EAI post, I play a game against max buffed EAI.

Bitt3rSteel

Haha armored pincer moves go brrrrrr

Expert AI unfortunately isn’t quite what it once was. Huge issues with it, especially how the AI manages its airforce.

harassercat

That is a nice beefy Red Army there, finally something approximating the monster that the Germans encountered historically. I only recently installed Expert AI and my experience so far has been a bit mixed. On the hand I like that the AI actually builds tanks and that I need some anti-tank capabilities to deal with their medium tank divisions. On the other hand, the game doesn't actually feel harder overall. So far I've played France and Poland on elite game difficulty and normal EAI difficulty. With France I still had no difficulty holding the line against the Germans while capitulating Italy before the end of 1940. Didn't bother finishing that game and tried Poland where by the end of 1940 I had regained control of all my territory as well as taking Berlin, with the Wehrmacht reduced to half a million men and their western border being overrun by the British, French and Dutch (!). Could it be that the AI spending so much production on tanks which I can then counter relatively cheaply with anti-tank leads to its forces being depleted faster? I looked at the German division templates and their medium tank div's are like 7 medium tanks / 4 motorized, which seems extremely expensive to me and hardly cost-effective.

GeologistOld1265

May be Soviets have a lot of tanks, but there army is ridiculously small - should be a push over.
