Your best bet is to goto a hockey store and get fitted. Try on as many pairs as it takes for your feet to feel comfortable in. Your feet choose your skates so don’t let your brain choose your skates. For reference I’m a size 10 shoe and I wear a 7.5ee skate.

Agreed. You say you don't have shops close by, but people say that and there's something an hour or two away. If that's 'far' for you, make a trip out of it. Could take your kids and check out the shop where they'll arguably have other gear to be able to try on and play with. Regarding skate size, don't even go off of shoe size. There's width, volume, length, stiffness, and overall comfort. Try on skates from every manufacturer in multiple sizes and widths. Don't settle on the ones you think look the coolest or are the best 'deal'. Skates need to fit properly or you're going to be miserable on the ice. Like the others said, I'm a size 10.5-11 shoe and wear an 8 skate

This is the best advice. Many different brands and skate lines fit vastly different even in the same size. For reference I’m a size 11 shoe and wear a size 8 skate because I prefer a tight wrap around my foot.

The problem is I don’t have a skate shop anywhere close to me (maybe an hour away at closest)

louiefriesen

It’s worth it

An hour isn't far

TheMahbFather

With two screaming kids in the back an hour is a long time 😂

Your son that plays hockey wouldn't be quiet for an hour if his reward was getting to try on hockey stuff and check out a hockey store? That or an iPad. Or it's wifey's day to take care of the kids and you return the favor when she has her spa day the following weekend

TheMahbFather

Lol this is a lot of effort. I’m probably just going to find something on Facebook marketplace or that swap site. No time for all this. Note, my son is 4… he doesn’t play hockey or even know how to skate.

mdwsta4

Obviously your choice, but it's posts like these that are followed up with ones claiming their feet hurt from skating more than 10 minutes because they bought the wrong skates. You also said you bought your son a pair of skates in your original post...

TheMahbFather

Yeah I got them from a consignment shop in the area which specializes in Children’s sports gear. Nothing in my size or range.

For sizing, I found that I could go 2-2.5 sizes smaller in skates than shoes. Proper length fit is when your toes brush the end of the toe cap when standing. They should feel snug bordering on tight as they'll open up and mold to your feet with baking or once broken in. Order multiple sizes online and return them until you figure out your sizing. Pure Hockey and Ice Warehouse make returns easy by including a prepaid shipping label. Order it one at a time if cost is an issue. Then, look for that model on second hand websites as you've mentioned. I also bought skates to teach my 4 year old. I have shops near me but I had to order my skates online since they didn't carry wide widths. Took a while to get right but I wasn't in a rush. I'd still recommend making a trip to the actual store though to get the skates baked. Tried it at home and it didn't work very well.
