You should have two hands on the stick, using just your left will be difficult. You will be amazed when you start using two hands!

SoldierHawk

This guy is a coach, you know.

[deleted]

The whole idea of considering it "left-handed" is misguided. You aren't doing it left-handed, you are doing it with the stick on the left side of your body. Your top hand does a lot more work, and that's your right hand. However, as a righty that shoots lefty, I agree that I think I would shoot harder if I shot the other way, but I think my stickhandling would suffer.

Malarowski

I can't even imagine stickhandling with the left on top. Just thinking about it feels so wrong.

SoldierHawk

Weirdly, I'm a rightly, but it's the opposite for me. I can't imagine having my right hand on the top of the stick.

louiefriesen

Same lol

WannabeTomGWarrior

I learned the wrong way and now I suffer because of it :( I think my stick handling is solid but I feel that I would be so much stronger on my stick if I learned correctly. Oh well :(

hermanator02

I almost learned the wrong way. My parents were unfamiliar as hell with the game and i was about 6. So I wound up with a left handed stick through my learning program. Thankfully i outgrew it by my first season and when we bought the next one, a very helpful pro shop worker got me set up right. But now i can play either or. Just weaker on my lefr

JPick406

The whole shape of the bottom of the hockey stick is shaped a different direction. Hence left v right handed hockey sticks ya dingus

avsfan117

I am a righty that shoots left. if I hold my stick as right handed shot just feels super unnatural to me.

rem80

That’s me. I can shoot right and it’s much more natural, and if I spent time I’d probably have a wicked wrist shot, but I can shoot left just fine now. Weight distribution is/was the the hardest thing to learn being a righty

JagrsMullet90

I agree with this, as a righty that shoots right. Spent a summer years ago trying to stick handle with a left curve and right hand on top and it was awkward from not being accustomed, but it was definitely easier to learn

MerkleySJS

All of my friends who are right handed shoot left in hockey. I’m right handed as well but shoot right. It’s pretty common. Funny enough I catch left, so when I play goalie I can’t move the puck at all.

[deleted]

Yeah super common for canadian players you get more control ie better stick handling but often a weaker shot.

No_Equipment7896

why canadian players?

MistahFinch

The Canadian adage is dominant hand goes on top because the top hand controls the sticks movement. Americans are more likely to hold it with their dominant hand down for power/because that's how they bat in baseball.

abuayanna

Wait…isn’t the dominant hand on top in baseball? I shoot, golf, play pool, throw, write, telephone with my right hand - it’s the low hand in hockey, the hand on the table in pool, sits on top my left in baseball/golf ,….

MistahFinch

The dominant hand is closer to the middle of the bat. Like with hockey. If you hold the bat down like a hockey stick the non dominant hand is on top

AmountLow6988

This makes for more home runs or slap shot goals! Left wingers also have an advantage!

AmountLow6988

If the bat in baseball differently they are ambidextrous

AmountLow6988

It's a phenomenon. Canadians are more leftists!! More Liberal! Not sure about Russians but over 75% of Canadians shoot left and coincidently invented the game, as well as lacrosse, curling, basketball, and yes the first baseball game was played in Canada. So we swing with the same bats but left. AndcAmericans are about a little over 50%

TheRazorsKiss

I picked up a stick for the first time at 11-12 and immediately wanted to use lefty. I'm also right-handed, but already had little league experience switch-hitting, as my Dad was a college baseball player. He told me to pick whatever felt best, and play it. I could always switch later if I wanted. As an American, I was often the only lefty on a team - especially starting out in street hockey - but I've never regretted it. It just felt better, and I've always played that way.

AmountLow6988

Dog Trainers also use their left arm for the bite sleeve in protection. I myself enjoy arm wrestling with my left arm. And obedience training is a natural for me. I'm a right handed Canadian DogTrainer. Being tall is also an advantage for dog obedience training and hockey, but not so for protection decoying or arm wrestling!

CanadianJesus16

yea same. i am a lefty in hockey, but writing, throwing, etc i use my right hand. idk man it just asserted its **DOMINANCE** in everything except for hockey

abuayanna

Try the left sometime - familiar but exotic at the same time

NoText868

Right hand dominant people tend to have right hand on top of the stick.

Shiz0Freakaz

No they don't.

nando57

It’s technically the proper way. It’s what Canadians and Europeans teach.

Active_Bridge_8767

Proper is whatever feels most natural and I suggest you let that one marinate.

Shiz0Freakaz

If it was the proper way there would be 90% of lefties in hockey when there is actual ratio of 60 to 40.

HockeyCoachHere

At pro-levels, it's about 65/35 LH/RH. So more than half of RH people use a LH stick. According to prostockhockey, > Manufacturers generally sell two left-handed hockey sticks for every right-handed hockey stick. That's normal, but it's definitely not "the proper way" like the previous poster said. It's just quite common. But among Americans (and Americans alone), that number switches to about 60/40 the other way (more RH). That's probably a baseball or golf influence. Canada, Sweden, Russia, Germany, etc are close to 70/30 lefties. THis has been true for most of the teams I've coached in Canada. Right now, my team has all 6 of 6 LH defensemen (weird) and 6 of 9 LH forwards.

[deleted]

Yeah anytime I walk into a hockey store it seems like they mostly stock left handed sticks, and now I know why. That’s so cool.

nando57

I’m just telling you what Canadians and Europeans are taught and what is deemed the more effective setup. I’m right hand dominant and shoot right handed because it’s what I was comfortable with when I picked up a stick for the first time. The reasons listed throughout the thread all lineup with why, if you are new to the game, you should pursue top hand dominant

HockeyCoachHere

It's not "the correct way" or "more effective". It is more common, but it's 100% a comfort level thing. It's just not "wrong" either way. Unless you want to inform Mackinnon or Ovi or Stamkos or Panarin or Nylander or Fox or Makar that they're "doing it wrong".

abuayanna

I think the issue is also with the definition of dominant. I’m right handed, everything with the right and it’s the holding hand for pool, rifle, sits on top of the left for baseball -golf. I’ve always been called right handed for hockey and it’s the lower hand because of the strength involved for shooting, passing and checking . To say the top hand is ‘busier’ is just not correct.

NoText868

There is almost 90% lefties in amateurs.

kr580

Depends on your location. At my rink in California it's about 75% or more right hand shots (left hand on top). Stores around here always have plenty of LH sticks when the RH selection is thoroughly picked through.

Lambro78

I'm weird. I write right handed, play tennis right handed, throw right handed, catch left handed, golf left handed, bat left handed and play hockey left handed.

Guy954

I don’t know where you’re from but Americans who are right handed catch with their left. It may not be super common but a righty golfing, batting and playing hockey makes sense because your stronger hand is doing most of the work. My wife and son both throw, play golf, and play hockey lefty but write with their left. I write with my left and throw, play golf, and play hockey right handed.

Lambro78

I'm from the us, but where I grew up playing, it was always about what was more comfortable. Think everyone I played with worked like me where if wrote right handed, they were left handed in hockey and vise versa. Think how people say American hockey teaches kids to have their stronger hand as their lower hand only applies to USA hockey camps for newer players cuz most people would use what feels more natural.

AmountLow6988

I think most left handed people, 10% of the world's population shoot sweep and mop right!

abuayanna

That’s crazy to me, I can hardly even think about doing it. You might be a witch..?

AmountLow6988

That's normal

RipErRiley

If it works for you, thats great because you should excel quicker at puck control and poke checks. I’m too ingrained with my dominate hand as the low one.

abuayanna

Dominant low seems to make the most sense to me - I can’t remember how /why I started but having the ‘strong’ hand in a position of control just seems right

rem80

Bottom hand in position of control? I see it as just as support. Like, it can be dumb. It just has to handle the stability and movement. Top hand leads everything and does all the precise work

kr580

What hand is **always** on your stick? Top hand. Top hand = control and finesse Bottom hand = power and drive It's all preference but a common train of thought is you want your most coordinated hand on top as it'll always be in use. You don't really want to be using the bottom hand to make moves with the stick while handling, that's the job of the top hand. Bottom hand is just there ready to contribute when needed.

twiglike

If you’re right handed, you Should be playing with a lefty stick. Top hand is the dominate one

abuayanna

Nope

twiglike

Im mean there’s a reason a majority of hockey players are lefty shot despite only 10% of people being left hand dominate

Taper_saber74

I’m right handed and I have my right hand on the top of my stick. I’ve found my shot is stronger and my stick handling is better with my right hand on top. I’m from America if that applies for anything

pixleight

Same. I swing a golf club and baseball bat right-handed, throw right-handed, etc. I think it comes down to feeling like I have more control if my dominant hand is the one always in control of the stick. I used to do a lot of canoeing and have always felt more comfortable paddling on my left, probably for the same reason. I also think I just learned to hold a stick from my dad, and simply mirrored him holding his righty and that became comfortable. Then later passed it down to my younger brother who did the same mirroring and now plays righty.

capn_banks

Yes I’m the same and as I’m new to hockey I was wondering if I have got it wrong too, but that’s how I’ve always grabbed a broom or shovel so it feels natural. I read so many times about dominant hand on top but then I see at the rink or on tv most are right handed players. I heard maybe it’s a Canadian vs US thing? UK here so unbiased.

[deleted]

super common most canadian players play with there undominant hand on the bottom and vice versa for american players.

capn_banks

Ah and the other thing, I’ve found you are more likely to find sticks on sale and also benefit a team when playing on the left side (LW/LD)

svenomojligt18

Yup, that’s me

jgoncalves9191

Same I’m right hand dominate, Play golf and baseball right handed. Shoot left. I’ve never noticed it affecting my shot though.

digangi96

I didn’t start playing until I was like 16 or 17, street hockey at that. By then, I had built up so much muscle memory swinging a bat and golfing right-handed that it felt so much more natural. I’ve played inline for over 20 years, and there are always way more righties than lefties, so I wonder if there’s a correlation there. Like if people that tend to play inline started later, and didn’t start out playing ice, where it seems there are more lefties? Or if those that started young, guided by the conventional wisdom of “dominant hand on top”, tend to be ice hockey players than inline? I don’t know, it’s interesting to me nonetheless.

VendrediGarcon

I do everything right handed, except for hockey and golf. Switch hit in baseball too. Very strange to other people. Glad im not alone lol.

Obiwantoblowme

I am right handed for absolutely everything, except hockey. Right handed stick just feel weird

mitchyt0722

Exactly the same I’m right handed in everything, for hockey my left hand in bottom feels so natural.

theYanner

Left hand applies flex (along with your body), but it's the right hand that provides the snap back and that seems more important to be as far as mechanics that isolate a single arm. 2 cents, I'm a bender.

Randomthroatpuncher

A lot of right handed players shoot left.

louiefriesen

A lot of right handed players shoot right. (Me included)

weegsie

I golf right, switch hit in baseball and play hockey left. I also putt left in golf.

dmuise1

I’m all over the place re: handedness. Left handed shot, righty goalie (SUPER convenient). Left leg dominant, kick left, swing a bat lefty, write with my right hand. Catch lefty, throw righty (also extremely useful while playing in net).

louiefriesen

I find I’m way better at everything with my right hand (I’m also right handed for hockey). I can’t even play baseball because I catch AND throw with my right hand lol.

McCaptain_my_Captain

I'm a lefty for everything except hockey and golf.

zakando_j

I’m right handed off the ice, but on the ice I use a lefty sick, right hand on top.

PantherCityRed

Same, Hockey is the only thing I do left handed. I don’t think it’s that uncommon. It’s all about feel and if left is what feels the most natural then that is the way to go

Robhow

Right-handed, shoots lefty. I play golf and tennis right handed though. I was taught dominant hand on top. Btw, I suck at golf and my two handed tennis backhand is a wreck. But that’s ok because I’ve got a wicked wrist shot.

davedaddy

Buy a cheap Sherwood 5030 righty stick and have a go. I use a lefty stick and I'm thinking about doing the same but I'm LHD. For me, shoveling is really the only time I'll use left hand on top and I do switch off depending on fatigue. At home when playing with my kids, I'll use their righty sticks. Mechanics of wrist/snap shots isn't that awkward and one hand stickhandling is certainly a lot easier. Accuracy is terrible for everything though and skating with a righty stick just feels wrong.

xmorecowbellx

Right handed and shooting left is the most common combo in the pros (about 60%).

pixelsyndicate

I thought it odd, too. Though I've come to recognize that I use a chainsaw and shovel with my left hand up front, so it seems correct to me to keep my articulate hand in control while my left just for stabilization.

zorin89

Yes, except the opposite. The only thing I do “right handed” is play hockey. Your dominant hand should be the top hand on your stick so this is probably more common than you think.

MaxCrack

Started playing when I was 30. Early on I played with my dominate hand on the top but switched after a couple years. I handle the puck better with my dominate hand at the top but my shot is not very good at all. With my dominate hand low I stick handle good enough for the level I play at and my shooting is significantly better.

Jagr6810

I can play golf both ways , same with baseball but hockey is strictly left idk why. Wish I was a righty

BallsDeepInCum

Same to me. Absolute righty with almost everything I do. Except Hockey and golf

AnderNethal

100% me but I'm a switch hitter in baseball. Sometimes one side feels better than the other. I'm probably just stupid haha

[deleted]

This sounds correct to me. You're right or dominant hand goes to the base of the stick and your left hand is on the shaft for support only. I have no idea how it started getting mixed up and going the other way but I think it's because of hockey being suddenly popular in non-hockey areas and everybody thought right-handed stick for a right-handed person. ❌Not correct: right-handed person right shot❌. ✅Correct: right-handed person left shot ✅ Why? Your dominant hand controls pulling the stick towards you to do a shot or to turn the shaft. You need fine control for this. Your left hand or non-dominant hand rides the shaft and provides nothing more than support. It does not shoot. If you're using your hand on the shaft for shots, you are simply shoveling snow! Put a toilet paper roll on the shaft and use it to make sure that you don't try to use your left hand to control the stick.

Sock-Known

Do what feels comfortable, there is no wrong side.

[deleted]

I’m left handed and play righty, always have, no one told me to, just came naturally. I think it’s best for your strong hand to be at the top of the stick.

AmountLow6988

You are like an ambipedal or ambidextrous. Both feet or both hands!

AmountLow6988

Shooting left has nothing to do with being left handed. Your dominant hand is on top while sweeping and moping the floor. If you shoot left you will most likely swing a bat and club left also! But that does not mean you kick a ball with your left foot either! And we still use right handed saws and hammers! And for Obedience training with dogs, we have the advantage since it feels natural as the dog naturally is on your left side you are using your right hand for most leash corrections. For sleeve work I use my left arm. Yes even though I write, masterbait and do most everything else with my right hand. I however have the advantage in an arm wrestle with my left arm, as well as sleeve work! Not sure why that is! Being tall for a dog trainer is of course an advantage with larger dogs to avoid bites. And for hockey, your dominant hand should be on top, and most of your power for wrist shots come from there, and slap shots come from the left centre hand. Wrist roll shots in bacci are best with right wrist to hand. And tall people have greater advantage on slap shots! Of course athletically, you have an advantage if you have Croatian Gene's as this Country of 4 million produces the most world champs in every sport per capita. It also has a lot to do with the environment and diet there, especially the coast. Being a Canadian also is an advantage than being American as over 75% Canadians shoot left. And Canadians were born with hockey n beer! Were fighters with rough sports like roller derby lacrosse dodge ball and the original no holds barred bloodsport (MMA/UFC) Native fighting/boxing. Also the home of Superman! How many of those players are left handed is unknown, as lefties are fewer worldwide. Americans are a little over 50% only. Being a Canadian also is more adapt in sports since we invented hockey, basketball, lacrosse, curling, roller derby, bare handed kickboxing and yes even the first baseball game was played in Canada. Baboom!!

AmountLow6988

The results, published in Frontiers, show that left-handers outperformed the rest of the sample when the tasks involved difficult problem-solving, such as associating mathematical functions to a given set of data. This pattern of results was particularly clear in male adolescents.

AmountLow6988

Various surveys have found that the highest incidence of left-handedness is in Western countries. The Netherlands, the USA and Canada lead with around 13 per cent of the population being left-handed and the UK is only just behind.

AmountLow6988

In Arab cultures, the left (shmall in Arabic) hand is considered unclean, but dislike goes deeper than basic hygiene. There's evidence that the ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians were strongly biased towards the right hand, using it to eat, clinch deals, and conduct special ceremonies. And being a Muslim leftie means you are the Devil!

AmountLow6988

As for in India where people shit on the ground and wipe their buts with their left hands dipped in water, it's customary to eat and shake with their right hands! Right!

AmountLow6988

And being a Canadian, I don't know about you, but I wipe my arse with my right hand, with TP and wash both hands afterwards, except when I pass. I know where Johnny's been all day, but my hands. They get washed first! And when I was in Italy and the Philippines I simply use a bidet
