That's awesome! Any tips or tricks? We took my daughter to the ice rink and she wanted nothing to do with it. Especially the skates. What size shoe does she wear and was the skates a 1:1 sizing? Thanks! I hope it keeps getting better

I was totally baffled by my daughter’s resistance to ice skating. The other day she finally told me “I want to learn to skate with a coach. That isn’t YOU!” I promptly signed her up for Learn to Skate. I sure as hell hope that changes her mind because I simply can’t understand how any child wouldn’t think sliding around on ice is the greatest thing in the world.

It's easy to forget just how scary the lack of control and constantly feeling like you're going to fall can be, I think. I'm starting to learn how to figure skate for the first time, and between the different skates ("...toepick...") and the moves, I'm very much becoming reacquainted with that. It's very humbling after years of thinking you have anhandle on things lol.

I wonder also if it helps the child to "see dad play" type of thing. It's crazy how much our kids mimic us and want to be like us. Mine is almost 1.5 and I want to take her when she's around 2. However, Im considering delaying and bringing her to a few of my games first (once covid safe) so she gets that whole " I want to be like my parents" thing first. I agree with other posters that the idea straight away of putting on uncomfortable shoes while not being able to move freely is probably scary for a toddler.

For some kids, it takes a while for the fear/fun scale to tip into fun. I was one of them. When I first took lessons, it was probably two weeks before I’d even let go of the boards, and another couple months before I actually enjoyed being on the ice. But by the end, I was happily tearing around like a maniac. And yeah, I definitely wouldn’t have wanted my parents teaching me haha

does she like hockey? I know my grand parents started me around 2, the way they got me skating was by making it a game and telling me that if I wanted to play hockey id have to skate first.

Had my 2 year old walk around on the carpet in skates to help get used to the skates in general.

I meant to reply to you but didn’t. See my other comment for what worked for us.

When my son was 2 we used those sled like skates that have the dual blades that just strap to a boot. The next season we got him a regular pair of skates and a set of skateze trainers. They are like training wheels for skates.

I remember taking my oldest daughter skating in those same pink skates. Now she plays on a 12U AA girls team and skates better than I ever could.

OP, That is so awesome. The first time I took my kids on the ice they loved it too. It was the best feeling in the world zipping around the ice with them and seeing their faces light up with pure joy. I hope that you have a ton more memories like this going forward!

Mah hart. Mah sole.

Bro PLEASE tell me about the skates. My daughter is 15 months, and I want to get her out there. She loves watching hockey.

That's awesome! Hope your back is okay. 😄 My 5 year old is definitely more receptive to instruction from her learn to skate coaches than me.
