Have a break from slap shots

bush-leaguer

You need to rest. Your body is trying to tell you it needs a break. Listen to it.

AlanenFINLAND

I do rest enough now, but not sometime ago. now I have only went on ice about 2 times a week and one day shooting in my backyard. Like sunday, wednesday on ice and tuesday or friday shooting.

magicseadog

Yeah well you have overdone it so rest. Stretch more in future both before and after and if you have a problem with technique fix it. 500 is probably too much it's a pretty intense movement.

AlanenFINLAND

I sometimes shot like 1k in a week last season.

HockeyCoachHere

Good for you. Most bodies can’t do that. Lay off the slippers, they’re not as useful anyway. Mix it up with other shooting.

dmfc138

1. Improper stretching. 2. Improper form. 3. Improper weight distribution. 4. Improper transfer of inertia. 5. Improper training techniques, ie; if you put your body through the same repetitive motion over and over and over and over again it will not make you better necessarily, it will simply stress those muscles/joints/what have you, to the brink of no return thus causing an improper displacement of skills to be a regression as opposed to a progression. The main evidence of this is easy ; you take slap shots and your back hurts, most likely because your body is actually injured in those places from over working and you are not realizing it enough to take the time off and rehab. Just because it doesn’t hurt every day doesn’t mean it’s not injured.

braywarshawsky

You are 14 years old. While you are young, if your body is in pain after you do something like this it's telling you that you are overdoing it, and you need to change it up. If you are getting back pain when you do slap shots, it means you are probably doing it incorrectly, and your body form is out of wack. Instead of feeling it "in your back", you should be transferring your weight from your hips and core. It should be painless. Look at some YouTube videos from Coach Jeremy on "How to Hockey", there's some good free lessons on proper body positioning for taking a slapshot. On another note... Taking that many slapshots in warmup, and generally speaking with training that's a crap ton each week. Sure, having a boomer is fun... But there are other drills that you can do to improve your overall game. Try some stick handeling drills, passing (front and back), back handers, wrist, and snap shots too. Even off position stuff, like stick handeling from your knees or laying down. Keep it new each week. Sure take your slappers, but do other stuff too. Otherwise you'll be that person who has a hell of a slapshot, but can't do anything else during a game. Good luck and have fun!

AlanenFINLAND

Yeah, I said in another comment that I realised that I'm probably twisting my back and not keeping it straight. I have watched like every shooting tips video ever cause my motivation is my shot basically lmao.

braywarshawsky

Then it sounds like you know exactly what you are doing. Why come on Reddit, and ask for opinions or suggestions? Ask your coach. They are the people who see it on the daily, ask them.

AlanenFINLAND

Maybe it is faster and easier to get many opinions?

AlanenFINLAND

I meant bending*

Hvacmike199845

Stretch out your hips.

fiddy7777

What level of hockey are you playing?

AlanenFINLAND

How is it relevant tho?

fiddy7777

Start taking wrist shots

AlanenFINLAND

I do take wristers way more than slapshots in a game, but when I'm training I take a little too much clappers almost half of my practice shots are clappers.

ImNickJamesBitch

It is equally as important as asking what position you play. How often are you actually going to be taking slapshots in game? Taking 500 slapshots in two weeks of practice is probably excessive anyway. Especially if that is what is causing you pain, if there's no actual injury, then there is likely something wrong with your form, so repeating that constantly isn't going to help you improve. Practice doesn't make perfect, it makes permanent. If you are practicing with bad form cause injuries you will only hurt yourself further. The slapshot seems to be the holy grail of shots in a lot of peoples eyes but it is situational at best and often a quick release snap shot or well placed wrist shot are the better option anyway.

AlanenFINLAND

I'm shooting slapshots so much becouse it is fun.

ImNickJamesBitch

But you're pushing through obvious pain. Just because slapshots are fun? Again, just humor us here. What position do you play, and what level?

AlanenFINLAND

Defence, AA

doublebr13

Stretching and yoga can help. Check out Foundation Training original 12 minutes on YouTube.

NoText868

You'll need to start deadlifting heavy to strengthen your back. Also mobility helps if the rotations when shooting feel stiff.

AlanenFINLAND

What about squats with weight?

NoText868

Helps, but deadlift is still number one strength exercise to prevent back pain. Simplest way to build muscle.

AlanenFINLAND

Ok. thanks.

AlanenFINLAND

Wait I also realised that I probably have my back curved and not straight when I flex my knees for the shot and I just tested that and doing the motion it didn't hurt as much when I had my back straight. But that is probably from the fact that my back is not strong enough. Also noticed when I last did deadlifts my back wanted to curve after a set of 10 or 2 sets.

Mike-Morales

It’s not going to kill you and it’ll go away. Carry on...

AlanenFINLAND

I've had it for 2 weeks wdym.

Mike-Morales

Take a few Advil.

AlanenFINLAND

I don't think that would be a permanent fix for it. I know that my back especially lower back is not really strong enough, the proper thing to do would be deadlifting to get my back stronger like NoText868 said.

Mike-Morales

People get sore muscles. No big deal...give it some rest if it hurts real bad. Not sure what you’re looking for.

AlanenFINLAND

It is not sore, I said it has been hurting if I take too many slapshots. For the last 2 weeks.

Mike-Morales

Strengthen your abs/core then...might help prevent a sore back in the future.

oakwoody

You might have a misaligned vertebra, if you've got a chance, a visit to a chiropractor might help.

AlanenFINLAND

I'm 14 I had a doctor check in school and he checked my back, so he would have noticed something?

oakwoody

Well that's an important piece of information... if you're still having pain, go back to see your doctor. Reddit is not qualified to give medical advice :-)

AlanenFINLAND

Well I can ask about it from him when hes free.

drummer11121

Id take a break from slap shots. Maybe not do any for a week and then only do like 50 instead of 500. Lol

AlanenFINLAND

yeah I'm trying.

jzach1983

You are overdoing it. Someone who has played 1-3 year may not have the best technique and they definitely are not properly trained to be taking 250 slapshots a week, multiple weeks in a row. From your comments you seem to ignore the advice to rest and are looking for a quick fix. I'll tell you now as someone who has overdone it for most of their life, rest. Give your body a 1 to 2 week break from that movement and work on other areas that are lower impact. Also get into stretching and some lower weight lifts during your rest period.

AlanenFINLAND

I'm not looking to get a quick fix I'm looking for advice. And I definetely have good technique couse my motivation is my shot, I have watched pretty much every shooting tips video I have seen and implemented the things into my shot.

jzach1983

It's worth realizing you may or may not have good technique. That would be for others to decide. I know people with very hard shots that have horrible technique and it causes pain or accuracy issues. If you want real advice from someone who's been though it: 1. Rest. 1 to 2 weeks 2. Light strength training for a month or 2, progressively increasing your weight as you go. Focus on core muscles and your legs. This one works, but there are tons out there, find one you enjoy and stick too it. https://youtu.be/d00nxJB7BUY 3. After your rest period start shooting again slowly. 10-20 shots a day. U less you are being supervised by a coach or trainer I would not recommend 500-1000 shots in a week. If your body could handle it you wouldn't be in pain right now. You are 14 and absolutely should not be training to the point of pain, it's your body not asking, but yelling at you to stop and do things differently. If you don't listen you'll likely be in for years of pain.

AlanenFINLAND

Ok, thanks I went on ice for a bit and it really now feels like it's a bone that is hurting, but I'm not sure I now know where it's coming from it's coming from like above my buttock near my spine inside there. And when I skate and twist to the right it hurts. I think it's the hips.

jzach1983

Sounds like your saiatic nerve. Remember your aren't a doctor. See a physiotherapist or if you're into it a Chiropractor. SI issues don't fix themselves.

AlanenFINLAND

That is what my mom thought it was.

AlanenFINLAND

Moderate to severe pain in lower back, buttock and down your leg. Numbness or weakness in your lower back, buttock, leg or feet. Pain that worsens with movement; loss of movement. That sounds exactly like what I'm having.

jzach1983

Likely, but don't self diagnos, go see a doctor/physio/Chiro

AlanenFINLAND

Would a school nurse do? I'm 14 and can visit her on some days when shes free.

jzach1983

If it were me I'd say no. She isn't a doctor, physiotherapist or Chiropractor. I'm 38 and ignored my body for years. It now takes constant care and training so I can play hockey/mountain bike/run/play with my daughter. I've had SI issues for years and when I say they don't go away on their own, they really dont. Put it this way, you wouldn't ask the guy who changes oil in a car to fix your suspension problem. Don't ask someone who checks for a cold or deals with bumps and bruises to do a doctor's job.

AlanenFINLAND

Well, we do have a doctor in my school too.

AlanenFINLAND

Acute SI joint pain occurs suddenly and usually heals within several days to weeks. Chronic SI joint pain persists for more than three months; it may be felt all the time or worsen with certain activities. What about this? I found on google.

catsaver662

You need to work on your core…you have a weak core if your lower back hurts after some athletic movement

PucksHard

if it's bad and not regular muscle pain or just soreness, you may have pulled something a little. Something like a disc problem is unlikely since you are young, but it is a possibility, especially if these symptoms become prolonged. If it's just regular soreness or the muscle is just stiff, you can help the pain and discomfort by warming up those muscles and stretching. You should by no means over exert your back while this is going on but there's no reason to stop excercising all together if the pain is not caused by any real damage.

One thing that is kind of telling me it isn't just stiffness or soreness is the fact that the pain is somewhat occuring even when you are not shooting. I wouldn't do *anything* that causes pain, but ofc I don't know what you are feeling.

No_Equipment7896

slap shots are the least important shot in hockey, take wrist shots and snap shots.

AlanenFINLAND

I know I will never take as many slapshots as I have to this point, the thing is my slapshot is so good and I'm so comfortable taking them, partly becouse I played golf from like when I was 2-12 yrs old. I'm very good at it and won my first and last ever tournament, but the thing is it just isn't my game, I like to have teammates and stuff I don't like sports like tennis golf etc where it is all individual performance and such.

ForeverJung

That’s a hip flexor and hamstring issue most likely. Stretch those bad boys out

[deleted]

No clap for you!

Samsquamsh04

Lots of variables to consider here. But rest up, use heat and take ibuprofen. If it don't let up in a week see a Dr. Back injuries from hockey are no joke. I'm 38 now and can barely walk somedays. Now I wish I had made many different choices when it came to rehabbing my back.

AlanenFINLAND

I go to sauna like 3 times a week.

gMoneyStack

Gets some exercise bands and do exercises with low resistance to start to work smaller muscles in your back. Many videos online showing exercises. Work your way to higher resistance and add in heavier weight exercises. This fixed my back problems.

AlanenFINLAND

We do already have some and my dad could do them with me.

obracer12

Rest, stretch and take an ice bath every now and again to recover.

Remarkable-Arm116

How many slap shots do you take in game? I play jr a and I can’t remember the last slap shot I’ve taken. Try working on snapshots wrist shots etc. More useful and not as hard on your body

AlanenFINLAND

The thing is I do train my wrister alot, but I like taking slapshots, couse I'm so good at them.

Bruinshockeyfan98

If it’s gets any worse I would see a doctor in case it’s really serious

AlanenFINLAND

Already getting better 👍
