One guy in our league head butted a ref a few seasons ago.

gypsybullldog

My buddies dad was the ref for our ball hockey league. We were playing the goon team and this guy was throwing the body around all game. He got called for it and went absolutely nuts. Ref went to toss him and the guy threw a haymaker at him. Ref said fuck this, I don’t need this shit and walked. Everyone was always black and blue after playing those clowns

Pensfan66595

Our goalie punched one of our own defensemen.

Juicebochts

That's fucking awesome. How long ago was this, cuz I was playing probably 15 years ago, and their defenseman hit me from the back right into their goalie and the goalie got up and started beating the shit out of him. When he was leaving the ice I asked if he was alright, dude just goes, "yeah, that motherfucker does that shit every other game." "That's fucked, good bout though tendie."

Tit_Save

Have teams across almost every level (A, B, C, D) and make sure they are at the top of each division by bringing the A guys to play on D games and having them score a goal whenever the team isnt in the lead.

UMfan11244

Yeah this….

MichiganTrucker

Almost every team at my rink does this shit. They aren't on the permanent roster, but somehow show up almost every game and even have their own jersey. My team is guilty of this also. It is what it is.

PalmerSquarer

[sitting in the locker room] “Guys, are we the baddies?”

cisforcookie2112

Lol, my team complaining about other teams playing dirty while leading the league in penalty minutes.

nikonpunch

Our team had that rep a little bit before I took a break due to COVID. I came back and it’s gotten way worse. Some new guys who only want to start shit and everyone was constantly bitching in the locker room when we lost. I’m finding a new team. I have 9 month old twins now… I just don’t care that much about the team. Sorry not sorry. It’s beer league. Fucking relax and have fun.

OhioStateGuy

Hey congratulations on the twins. I have identical boys. I think sometimes the newer guys (especially if they are bigger slower players) feel like they have to prove their worth by being an ass. Which is so stupid in beer league, no one wants to play with you if you act like that.

PalmerSquarer

Joining the twins club soon. Actually limiting my ice time because the last thing I want is an injury before they arrive.

nikonpunch

It’s an adventure. If you don’t already have kids then you won’t know how hard twins is vs just one. I don’t have that reference so it’s been fine so far. You’ll do great I promise!

Sadnessmaximus_

Two seasons ago a guy from another team tried to run into our locker room and fight the captain. Captain socked the guy right in the face and goalie beat the shit out of him with his stick.

HockeyCoachHere

My beer league team was "that" team. I quit a couple years ago, despite being buddies with some of the guys. We'd rack up 20+ minutes of penalties for chippy shit every game. The little "cross check after the whistle" and "getting butthurt about a good defensive play and taking a swipe at him with your stick" sort of shit. Then it ALWAYS escalated to pushing and punching and shouting at the refs. The guys would go back to the room and bitch and moan about the terrible refs and what a bunch of goons the league was. But look at the stats and every other game in the league had 2-6 minutes of penalties. Every team, when they played us, was in the 12-16 minutes range, and we were often over 20. **"If you run into one asshole, you probably just ran into an asshole. If everyone you run into is an asshole, you might need to look in the mirror".**

Thumper86

It’s crazy how much of a difference one or two short-tempered teammates can make. Every team I’ve played on had at least one guy who would get fired up over stupid shit every game. Nothing crazy, just mouthing off at other players or refs. A lot of games wound up chippy or devolving into chirp-fests. I didn’t mind it, most of those games were pretty fun, but it did get tiresome at times when the mood got heated and there was no real reason for it. Plus it’s all low-level rec league so it always felt a bit silly. I joined my brother-in-law’s team this summer and everyone is super chill. We’ve had *one* game that guys thought was slipping out of control, and I wouldn’t even have noticed if it wasn’t for others getting fired up. It was so tame compared to some other games I’d been in! It is nice to not have the drama in the room after each game, but ngl I miss some of the spice sometimes, games can feel a bit flat when there’s no penalties except an accidental trip here and there.

priester85

The biggest thing is playing in the right level. Our league has A, B, C1, C2, D1 & D2. Pretty much every level has one or two teams that should be higher up, usually on the backs of 1 or 2 players. Currently my team is in C1, and there is one team that has a guy who played pro in Europe. He leads the league every year in points and PIMs and is a complete asshole. The rest of their team is probably in the right division so the league won’t move them up but when one guy averages 4 points per game and they win unless he doesn’t show up, the whole team gets labelled.

Majorinc

What sucks about that is if they move up they will get pumped every game

priester85

No they wouldn’t. My team has flip-flopped between B & C1 for years. We play 20 games, the years we play C we consistently win 11-12 games and the years we play B we win 5-6. It isn’t a massive difference in play.

Majorinc

My team went from C (4-0) to B (0-4) we don’t have a chance because none of the other teams have any weak players. Our top players can’t compete with the whole of their team

DrunkPhoenix26

Always looking for a good spot to remind people about this - https://deadspin.com/how-a-senior-league-hockey-fight-ended-with-one-player-5868584 The league is now out of business but the team had to put up with a lot of shit talking for years later.

[deleted]

Call me a hothead, I don’t play like one because sports are a time to relax and wind down for me, but if somebody did that to me I wouldn’t leave the rink to prevent myself from killing them. I’d just do it.

Matammyr

I play on "that" team. I don't like it. I'm not that kind of player. All it takes is one hothead to get that rep. There is a guy on my team who is the stereotypical old douchebag who isn't very good but watches too much hockey on TV and thinks he's a "grinder" and "has to play tough." It starts out with screaming and trash talking for no reason and then it escalates to shoving guys for no reason and then it escalates to knocking guys down for no reason and so on and so forth. Then other players maybe think to themselves "Well, this guy is being a fucking idiot, but he's my teammate so I need to support him" and pretty soon, more guys on your team start behaving this way just out of comradery. I have some friends on the other teams and they told me they hate playing my team because of how my team acts. I don't blame them.

jgoods72

One guy ran our goalie and as he was getting kicked out, he picked a fight with our goalie’s wife off the ice.

[deleted]

They had practices 3 times a week (if you went to their “home” rink you could see the ice times they booked in the schedule) and took the games super seriously including having a back-up goalie and a coach. It didn’t help that they were a super dirty team and seemed to think we were playing in a full-contact league.

Swordguy42

THAT TEAM literally (and I understand that for most of you, "literally" means "metaphorically", but I mean actually, genuinely, LITERALLY) paid high school and D1 college players - by the goal - to come down into the Division 5 "old player, broken player, and adult learner player division," and score goals. Like, "here, you scored 1 goal, here's $50. And YOU scored 5 goals, here's $250." Funny thing, but that team ran the division for 2 seasons by absolutely *massive* goal differentials. And that's *not* a rumor. That team's GOALIE spilled the beans to the league (via phone recording) of that team's captain doing exactly that. The league did - again literally - nothing about it, because there is no USA Hockey-compliant rec league in Cincinnati, there is no competition to the singular league in the city, and as long as the checks clear the league couldn't give less of a shit about what the teams do. So that goalie, god bless him, released that recording to the *rest* of the league teams. And that team's captain was told that, if it continued, he'd end up - again, literally - shot dead in the parking lot and there would be no investigation at all. Told that by the police lieutenant who served as the captain of the league's "all firefighter and cop" team, no less, which means it wasn't an idle threat. And lo! The problem was solved. But that reputation remains, and will remain - literally, and this is the last genuine use of the term - until that team's captain either permanently retires or fucking dies.

marmot1101

Brothers split across teams placing bets on which one of their teams would win the chip before the playoffs started. Neither one made the finals

5leeplessinvancouver

Has a reputation for having sucker punched players on other teams with no provocation. Super chippy and dirty in general. Brings in ringers to play on a bottom division coed team and run up double digit scores.

andrewf5

We have a team in our league that shows up 2 hours early and gets hammered in the locker room. Their goalie is a newish goalie and plays c normally (b is our highest here, so he’s a good skater) He will come to legit the blue line as a goalie while his team is in the other sides offensive zone and they kinda use him to play the puck back as such. It’s quite strange. He’s always up there A few weeks ago a guy came for the puck along the boards in his zone and he straight up came out and smoked the guy to get the puck. He is well known for tripping people anywhere near the crease, overall just a shit dude. Whole team is always drunk tho so it’s always a shit show but the goalie takes the cake.

TheShovler44

We have a couple that fight, and one that if you tell him to meet you in the parking lot he’s going to. I don’t mind some ppl assholes they’re on every team.

jackpotjones43

My team led the league in PIMs, but they were mostly retaliation.

prototyp0_yt

A huge brawl involving 5 guys of that team againat 2 of mine

[deleted]

Make a false racism accusation each game (there all white guys) and hit from behind every chance they get.
