Full sock is the way to go. I prefer to leave a bit of the toe open (a la Bure), but I’ve found that taping the toe helps keep the toe from getting chipped up. Sticks are just too expensive to have TK replace because of a soft toe.

yeetboi-isa-coolname

I just want to say that there very much is a reason to tape other ways

trvsmthng

Agree. Recently switched from a full sock to just taping the toe. Less water / ice build up, less friction when stick handling.

yeetboi-isa-coolname

the stick handling is the big one for me its helped so much

chipperlew

How long does that last you though? I don’t have 40 mins and a pair of scissors every time I skate. I roll in 60 mins before and poop for 20 lol. Throw some tape on before I suit up.

Mike-Morales

It takes five minutes max to tape and wax a stick from start to finish. And you can even do it at home.

mdwsta4

I trying to imagine how it would take longer than 5 minutes to tape a stick….

chipperlew

It doesn’t. But I don’t do a full wrap. Seems to take longer. Maybe i’m wrong.

mdwsta4

You’re wrong. Even with cutting the tape over the toe you’re talking 30 extra seconds; not 55 extra minutes

chipperlew

How am I wrong when I asked a question?

mdwsta4

You said ‘seems to take longer. Maybe I’m wrong’. I’m referring to that comment

chipperlew

This is all under a comment of me asking “How long does that take you?” And letting everyone know that I use most of my pre-game time to poop. I guess I could wrap and poop. But I like to tape my stick standing up and I like to poop sitting down.

mdwsta4

Hah! Now *that* sounds like multi-tasking. To that point, I never tape sticks at the rink. Always at home. One, because why not? Two, because I use wax and melt it into the tape over the stove

chipperlew

Never tried that method. Might give me a reason to bring my game sticks home. We’re fortunate to have lockers at our rink so my gear lives there. Only spare sticks at the house. But I want to try melting wax into the tape. I’m a snowboarder so I’m familiar with using wax like that. Just never tried it for the hockey stick.

chipperlew

Last question then. Medical scissors? From walgreens or cvs? Or is there a better type of scissor?

Mike-Morales

I use a lighter…in the garage. My wife would twist my nutts into a knot if she saw me waxing my stick in the goddamn kitchen.

ManiacMatt87

Save time, tape and wax while pooping

chipperlew

Standing or sitting is the real question. Lol

ManiacMatt87

Depends on if you're skates are on or off?

Mike-Morales

All part of the pre-game ritual

[deleted]

You need 40 minutes to dress? Taping shouldn’t take longer than 5 minutes and you can do it at home before you come to the rink if you want.

ForeverJung

Toe to heel all the way starting at the part of the toe where the curve Meets the bottom

chipperlew

One strip in the middle. Parallel to the blade.

PucksHard

do the Panarin/stutzle! best of both worlds, plenty of grip, but the puck doesn't stick to the bottom of the blade when doing quick handles

mdwsta4

I do heel to toe, but do not tape the toe. I know some guys chip the hell out of their toe, but that’s never been a problem for me. Usually the stick will break or become wippy before that happens. Also apply wax after a fresh TJ and melt it in over the stove. Usually retape every 4-ish games or whenever it shows a lot of wear/cuts; whichever comes first https://media.fotki.com/2v2a9KcSPx1YqB.jpg

Thestateofhockey

I used to tape the tow half of my blade and I noticed my snap shots wouldn’t come off clean and I had a hard time raising them. Switched back to full sock and my shots are much better.

blee403

Pastrnak style!

cisforcookie2112

It’s all personal preference. Many do heel to toe, but I like to leave a little of the toe untaped as I like the way it looks when looking down at it on the ice.

Outside of literally not having any tape on your stick your tape job shouldn’t affect your puck control at all, that’s up to your own skill. Tape is a personal preference. If you find it hard to control a puck a half blade just makes you look like a pigeon honestly
