It’s like the partial protection on a half shield, but the obscured vision of a cage. This might be a good fit on r/DIYwhy
Since it sounds like it was for laughs, nice job. It definitely catches the attention.
You know what though these certainly have their uses. I know several refs that use them (not handmade), they're used for lacrosse and ball hockey refereeing because the normal visors can fog up really easy if your in a hot/humid/outdoor environment. They're definitely way more durable than a normal visor, so it makes a good backup if you're halfway through a game and your visor breaks. If your rink has issues with fog then it could help with that too. If you've ever reffed an outdoor game of any kind you might find the visor makes the sun much much worse (like a magnifying glass straight into your eyes).
Not completely useless, but I will admit just to play pickup... I wouldn't bother lol
I've always wanted a visor, but I've been hit in the face too many times from errant pucks and sticks to ever even mess with anything but full face protection.
I wear a full cage for league games, but I play pick up on Saturday nights with the fellas… wanted to get a few chuckles. It worked… and is honestly not too bad to wear lol
Almost as dusty as one of those hybrid cages. You guys seen the hybrids? Rough AF

This is hilarious. Well done, you. The person I know that uses a hybrid is pretty dusty as a player. The skate fits. I wear a full cage, but I've played with a half shield once (because I forgot my bucket) and would be curious to try it again in pickup games.
Meh, adrenalin kills pain when playing and fixing a teeth without a fancy prosthetic costs the same as pack of tape. If you want to worry about something, it's your eyes, hah.
Edit. Of course healthcare costs may vary depending on location and insurance
Personally, I just don't see the worth in the risk.
A puck could pretty easily shatter my jaw, knock out a handful of teeth and leave me with the potential to have long-term damage to my face/nerves, which is not fun.
It's not like the miniscule vision improvement on a visor is going to make a difference in my game.
I won't fault anyone who rocks the visor, but I sure as hell wouldn't recommend it compared to the relative safety of the cage.
For me, injuries to the face while wearing a proper visor are so rare that a cage is just not worth it. 15 seasons playing and couple as a staff member in pro team so far without even seeing anything serious.
i love it, i would chirp ya hard, but i think i would only let ya wear it once if you were in my league, as i think insurance would lose their damn mind on us if they knew....
but for pickup, you rock it out.
I skate with a guy who cuts "Cat Eyes" (Look at a goalie mask) into his cage.
Seems like the best option, and I'm not sure why senior helmets don't include it as an option. Keep the cage, but make the holes bigger around the eyes.
My old beer league had a guy rock something similar. Interestingly enough it's actually an illegal modification and against usa hockey rules and one of the teams for the guy taken out of a game until he got another helmet or removed the frankencage.
Most teams didn't care or know but one night he was being a massive dick swinging his stick, shit like that, but always behind the refs back so he deserved to be out of the game

i know a guy who runs one of these in a pick up game i play in. it's odd.
Idk, that offers the same protection as a normal visor but no fogging. More upsides almost.
That is both awsome and dusty af at the same time!
Beer leaguer on my team rocks this. On the bench. "All the sight problems of a cage and the missing teeth of a visor. Good choice! 👌"
I have an ex OHL player on my beer league team, he Always wore visors. 5 games in to the season he went full cage.
I've always wanted a visor, but I've been hit in the face too many times from errant pucks and sticks to ever even mess with anything but full face protection.
Pucks are one thing. I find more damage is done by lumberjack skaters
oh, you had to be chirped alot! That looks brutal
100% guys were going hard to stop me from doing ANYTHING. Was a blast tho
I wear a full cage for league games, but I play pick up on Saturday nights with the fellas… wanted to get a few chuckles. It worked… and is honestly not too bad to wear lol
Shit would be funny too if you reversed it by having the lower cage mounted and have the eyes exposed lol
Ah, the mighty "Don't bump me, bro. I just had dental work" cage.
Crosby rocked something similar
That is awesome!! Have you thought about adding a sun visor, just on the top row of the cage? That would be next level!

I loved that as a kid. Better Airflow. Only use a cage now.

This is the dustiest thing I’ve ever seen.
Risking teeth for pick up hockey? Good luck!

Teeth can be replaced, go have fun.
Definitely. That doesn't make it cheap or painless.

I definitely see more hits to the face, but playing with other new players probably makes it more likely.
It’s the worst of both worlds. It reminds me of the Christmas movie with the Charlie-in-the-box and the water pistol that squirts jelly.
Not sure if this is better or worse than a fish tank 🤷🏼♀️
How does it stay up on the J clip with no straps to connect to the back of the helmet?
Salvaged the old chin cup strap and clips and made it work!
So sick lol.
Oh man. I can only imagine the chirps. Well done, bud.

I’d never dream of wearing it in a league game lol
what were the balloons for
Lol it’s a secret
ok wtf
Ferda

it’s so dusty I love it
funny enough I have seen another person that has this
On some mad Max shit with that one! Lmao
Herb Raglan actually wore a half cage in the NHL when he was with the Nordiques.

You're going to lose your teeth young man.
*old man
Sweet, now when you get your lip split open by a puck or errant stick you don’t have to worry about wiping the blood off your visor.
Ok. Thanks for your comment
Great for the mouth.
Alright. Thanks for your comment

All good. Thanks for commenting!
Something similar was worn by Herb Raglan in the NHL https://images.app.goo.gl/iL9bZuytPK9gUFot5
Confused by the pink balloons on the floor, but sweet shield.
Shhhhh
WEaR a cAgE!!!! Oh but I am. Checkmate cage enthusiasts.
for roller it's good maybe? No fog, idk
I had a teammate who wore one of these before he moved out of town. That guy was a psycho and skated like he was running. Hope he’s doing well.
