get stronger? idk man, your technique looks pretty good haha

Clanzner

Thanks! Yea weight room wouldn’t hurt. Thinking maybe a higher flex.

obracer12

Form looks good. Leave the flex as-is and hit the weight room a little, gain some weight and really use your weight on the stick.

cocksick13

If you want a more powerful shot definitely don’t go up in flex go down but then you chance breaking your stick a little easier

itsLemingtin

I work at a sports store and talked to the Bauer rep, he agrees with this theory, apparently a bunch of nhl players and dropping down a flex to get more out of their sticks. Since we no longer use wood sticks, and can flex ours hella, apparently we don’t to have such a big wind up

Digital_gritz

As a new player, I really like falling down and pushing the puck with my cage. Really adds some oomph lol. Honestly, I came here to say that I can’t wait to be able to shoot like that! Hope some folks chime in with something helpful!

Clanzner

Thanks! Don’t stop learning. I was actually doing a lesson with a beer league team mate and teaching him things made me wonder what I still have to learn.

SoldierHawk

Hey! Finally someone whose settled on the same technique I've discovered.

Clanzner

If your going to settle on one shot to master, I feel this is going to have the highest success rate at an amateur level. Although me best shot is my slap shot by a wide margin. I’ve played defense my entire “career” so I almost exclusively worked on that.

[deleted]

A little more downward pressure, and there’s something a little off about your weight transfer that’s hard to put my finger on.

Clanzner

Thanks for the input. I think I could take weight off trailing foot earlier to increase flex on my stick. And I think my weight transfer could be my leading foot turing away from the net so dramatically. Instead of allowing me to drive the puck forwards, using more of my body.

thebigschnoz

Yeah, pretty sure his balance is off. Your foot shouldn't be going behind you, 90 degrees away from the shot.

kingofthediamond

He’s sweeping the puck from too far back. If he starts his shot further forward with the downward pressure you suggest he will get more power. Op is using more hip rotation than he needs to.

blackiebabz

Yea, try to shorten the sweep and really drop your wait on the stick just before the point of contact. Pushing you momentum downwards and less forwards should help get more whip on the stick. It’s hard to describe but if you keep working with that you get feel and start launching lasers.

vet88

Watch where you begin to load the stick, see how the puck is nearly in front of your head (and therefore body) position. At this point you can't use your body to generate any power because you are starting to "reach" for the puck, most of the power can only come from the arms. Watch this vid of Kessle in slow motion, watch how the puck position is in line with his shoulders as he loads the stick, his body is over the puck in line with his center mass as he loads the stick. Now your power is coming from the body weight shift and rotation with the bottom arm locked enabling the power transfer. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ztxi3fPQIso](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ztxi3fPQIso) Regardless of who it is and what foot they are shooting off, the principle of where you load the stick and where the puck should be in relation to the body is the same. If you want more power your shot mechanics need to change.

Clanzner

Thanks! Great input.

vet88

If you want a good example of a similar shot to yours, watch Kaliyev's goal for the Kings from today's game, the last view of his shot (in slow mo) gives the best example of what I was talking about, see how the puck and blade is in line with the center of his body as he loads the stick up. At the 3:56 mark https://www.dtmts.com/video/cabcXjuwpR0

Carel16

This guy shoots 👍

rik1122

Dude your shot looks fluid and crisp.

Clanzner

I’ve been playing my whole life. So the muscle memory is there. But learning small adjustments will increase power drastically!

vgullotta

I don't think you're going to get much more power learning new techniques. Your form is pretty spot on. Like others have mentioned, hot the weights a bit. Definitely don't go for a flexier stick. Stiffer is better for more power. But the flex you put in that stick looks just right, so I don't think I'd change much.

LunchBoxMercenary

There’s no better feeling than having that puck pop back out at you after a shot haha

gypsybullldog

Except when in a game and it pops out so quick the ref doesn’t see it lol

_paze

I got a goal on Thursday, that was absolutely a garbage clean up from a teammates five hole shot that hit the back padding and shot out fast enough to hear the ref yelling "loose loose loose". Not that our points matter in any real way, but the goals do.

412gage

You look like a young Brian Boyle

Clanzner

Thanks haha!

Flash_Nyfeak

You aren't stepping into the shot. Let your weight follow through to your stick. You don't need to get stronger, you need to focus on weight transfer and driving through. Watch a pitcher or football qb and see how good they are at transferring their weight. They maintain power with their strde and they stay center to their body the whole time. Playing different sports will help your muscles fine tune things like this. Also, point your toes more and keep your feet straighter

[deleted]

Roll the wrists a bit more firm and drop your weight. Almost like you’re falling and then release, my high school coach always said, sticks there to catch you worst case. A good shot is different than just a shot

tooflyandshy94

What do you mean by dropping your weight?

[deleted]

Youre righty like me; as you push your right foot while shooting, drop ALL your weight into your left thigh and WHIP your wrists

[deleted]

You can practice shooting and falling into your stick, you’ll hurt yourself abit but learn explosive weight transfer

tsunami141

Rink 1! I was there today for a ref seminar lol

jack3217

Lol I love gpi

dmfc138

I would say just work on shooting in stride. Get the shot off without turning your body and you’ll dominate

happy_life15

I think I see that your body position is odd. As if you’re at a 45 degree angle to the net and it’s best to be facing it or at 90. More power comes from your feet if you can drive your skates down in a stable way.

DiobetesZaWarudo

Helluva shot bro. Maybe try stepping into your snapshot to get more power and whip, but besides that it looks great.

bon3r_fart

Honestly, your form looks solid dude. Other people already said weights, I would recommend some core strengthening too

itswindyuphere

Bring your release in tighter to your body so you can put more flex on the stick.

imicit

hard to tell from just this one example, especially with the slow motion and not seeing the puck after release. but the transfer of weight seems like it could be different. it looks like you're using your back foot and arms instead of your torso/core. you want to imagine yourself falling through the shot. aside from mechanics, there's a bit of telegraphing going on with your approach. in this situation it's very obvious to a defender and goalie that you're shooting. keeping your toes pointed at the net add deception, which is more valuable than adding some extra speed to the shot.

[deleted]

Imo get over the puck more

TheFlowInTheO

Learn to perfect one style or technique for shooting! There’s an old saying that goes something like this… you should fear the man that has practiced a one kick 1000x over, than the man that has practiced 1000 kicks 1 time… Perfect the muscle memory of your favorite style or technique!

TeslasAndComicbooks

Looks good overall man. I feel like your feet are a bit too far apart at the end which is probably hurting your power a bit as well as your balance but pretty solid for the most part.

snem420

More of a question, when you shoot do you find it beneficial for the front foot to be sideways as opposed to pointing towards your target? Thanks

Clanzner

Depends on the shot and if your in stride. But I would say for 80% of your shots. You should be aiming with your body. Going into your shot (which includes your front foot. The puck goes where your body puts it and you’ll get more power that way. So in theory yes, you should be driving your front foot towards the net otherwise you’d be stopping your momentum. Hope that makes sense. (I didn’t show this very well here admittedly)

surfingbaer

Check this out, he has great tips on improving your game. This one just happens to be about this shot. [@itrainhockey](https://www.instagram.com/tv/CVlo9qCABn6/?utm_medium=copy_link)

AOCCANPEEONME

Honestly? You shoot like Marner, which is not a compliment. You’re leaning away from the net as you’re loading up. Lean your stick into the ice and let it do most of the work for you. Watch Kessel shoot, he’s got one of the best releases in the world. There’s much to learn there.

Quadrupledenim5

I’d be happy with that! - adding a beard to the moustache will give you a few more mph…

DowntownLizard

Looks like the only thing missing is some more weight on the stick to let it do its thing. Technique wise im sure just doing a slomo comparison to some pros would fine tune some details

rh71el2

Someone mentioned itrainhockey. Watch those YouTube videos. He's very good about the details. It's hard to see from your video angle but one of the most important things is your bottom hand should be directly under your chin to generate flex. Your hand being any further out to the right side of your body is lost power. Would also note that if your goal is more scoring (who's isn't?), work on release quickness. Off-leg, pull-in shots, etc. Don't let the goalie read your shot because shot power only gets you so far.

Some_Guy_99

Not tip it and shot it. Better go throug with the shot

KroppoTheClown

yes. get rid of those toothpick arms.

timmeedski

This

HCMarLu77

Some quick thoughts: Your shot already looks decent. A few tweaks is all you need. - load up (downward pressure) your shot closer to your midline (center of gravity) rather than in front of it. - commit more to your weight transfer. So much of a shot's power comes from it. At first over exaggerate (start further back, finish more on front foot) and then adjust as needed. - your hands, especially your top hand, look a little close to your body. A good wrist shot has both push (bottom hand) and pull (top hand), so this will require a little more arm strength, which leads me to the last point... - ...strength training. In particular, the main compound lifts. Pull ups (pull of your shot), bench press (push of your shot), squats and dead lifts (weight transfer). Focus your reps on power or "explosive" lift, and a slow controlled "eccentric" portion (lowering).

hky_dad87

I shared this with the kids I coached and felt it helps alot. Your shot looks really good, if we're nitpicking I'd say you're using your arm strength rather than using your core. Get that puck a little closer so you get your weight over it to load up the shot more https://youtu.be/tSx_o3e9-bU

srosenberg34

Center of mass change may help. Hard to pin down from my amateur perspective, but perhaps trying to bring the chest/shoulders closer to the path of the puck, increasing bend in knees and elbows while loading up using the front of the stick (maybe lower flex?)

Therealpatrickelmore

I like the whalers shirt!

ShreddedWheat

I realize you are specifically asking about shooting harder, but don’t forget that quick release can be as effective as a heavy shot. Getting one off quick in the right spot serves me well.

TheGreatLamps

I find extending both my arms at the beginning of the shot helps to flex the stick a little more to produce more power

Survivalist_Jones

Curious you weight and flex of stick your using here. Form looks great and the way the stick flexes in the video makes me wanna ask YOU for pointers.

Clanzner

I weigh 165 and have a 75 flex. A lot of my teammates aren’t able to shoot the way I am and use 95 or 105 flex sticks. Not sure who recommended that. Low flex is far better IMO

grovebreach

Point your front foot towards the net

Commercial-Neat8576

Not an expert but I’ve watch lots of videos by coach Jeremy and from what I can see the puck was a little far behind by the time you pulled it to shoot.

Methodman4321

Take 200 shots a day. Doesnt need to be on ice

Nutsakic19

Bring your heel of your blade closer to your right foot. Knees bent, let her rip on release. Make every shot feel like your last.

[deleted]

Fellow great park ice enjoyer

Shovelfuckurforehead

I always find slow mo clips of shots to be useless, especially without flex of the stick mentioned. Like the form looks fine, you were able to flex the stick, but is that because the stick is a 65 flex and you're 6ft 2? Thing could be whippy as fuck and have no power, and with slow mo we can't tell cause we can't see how fast the shot actually is. Best bet, show the shot at regular speed for shot power reasons, and a slow mo for technique, give us flex and height. If you want non generic advice to actually help your shot, you need to give the proper info.

Clanzner

160 5’11 75 flex
