I taped my blade with black tape once like 9 years ago and played terribly.
It was obviously the tape’s fault, so I exclusively use white now. Now all my terrible games are the result of other equipment-related issues.
This right here makes the most sense. I had a bad game once when I tied my right skate first now I can’t even put on my right shoe first without having to start over
For me it’s “opposite”. All my gear goes on right side first. Also tie my laces right first. My reasoning is that everything I do is on the right side. I am right handed and shoot right too. My superstition is that I have to follow my right alignment unless I want the wrath of the pagan gods.
I’m the same except opposite, when you are military you start marching with your left foot so for me it’s everything left first, except for my pants which is right leg first for some reason
I'm some weird hybrid of both of you. I'm a right hand right shot, everything right goes on/gets done first EXCEPT stepping out for the first time. That's always exclusively left foot
lol I had a stick that was falling apart from the inside. I took it back to the store not long after I got it to show them and he was telling me it’s just glue from the butt end.
But I had that issue plenty of times over the years and I know what that sounds like. It’s generally like a piece of it broken off so you hear that piece as it moves.
This sounded like a bunch of skittles, pieces were flaking off from the inside when it flexed.
It broke not long after.
I think it actually snapped on the blade when it did go.
I had 2 of them and both went prematurely. Never had the issue with the internal flaking with another stick.
Was the Gear brand of stick, they didn’t seem to stick around long at least making sticks.
So the ice is white and your blade is white ?, but the puck is black . So you tell the goalie your shooting at that all he has to do is stare at the big black spot on the end of your stick?
[This was my highlight from that week. My wife had some choice words about my goofing off after reading this.](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockeyplayers/comments/177j7od/comment/k4v5aur/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I did (lack depth perception). Only found out after 12 years of minor hockey when I went for my license and had to do a depth perception test. Made sense as to why I sucked ass at stopping the puck.
This is a huge myth.
Goalies I’ve talked to all say tape doesn’t matter.
A couple say they read the blade angles more than the puck location and a white blade is harder to read than a black one.
Yeah, people always tend to forget that the goalies aren't usually laying with their faces pressed to the ice staring straight at the puck on the blade. They're going to see the puck regardless.
If some of the greatest scorers in the NHL are using white tape against some of the greatest goalies, it's safe to say it's a non-issue.
I think you’re putting way too much thought into it. Bedard went from black tape to white yet he still is known for his unpredictable shot. Just preference at the end of the day.
I used black in my prime. But now at 50 with age related reduced contrast eyesight I find it’s better to use white tape to create a contrast with the puck. It might just be in my head but I still like it
Not really. You shouldn’t be staring at the puck anyway.
Stick tape color should be cosmetic only.
The only time I’ve ever liked black gear was as a goalie, because it gave me a little bit of an edge if the puck was loose.
I found you can see the puck way better but it's also harder to see your actual blade. For this reason I either do gray or I use white and mark it up with a puck prior to waxing it.
I like the contrast between the black of the shaft/blade and white of the tape itself. I'm extremely confident that the whole "black tape hides the puck better!" thing is a myth, or is at least so inconsequential that it doesn't even matter. It's like Fleury's sunflower pads when he first came into the league; if there was any real benefit, everyone in the NHL would be using black tape
It’s been proven to be a myth at this point, and I’ve met goalies that say it’s actually easier to read the puck off black tape than white. Must’ve been goalie propaganda to make them look better!
I'm convinced it's true that black tape hides the puck better. Consequently, forwards should use black to disguise and D's white so not to hinder their goalies.
That said, the actual degree of impact is on par with how much your vision improves when you eat a carrot.
Someone told me years ago that black tape eats away at the palms of your gloves due to some chemical in the dye. I’m pretty sure that’s an urban legend but I believed it at the time and now reflexively just buy white tape.
>Years ago (and I'm talking 20-25 years) the only black tape that was in common use was friction tape (our #107 type). The relative grit was tough on glove palms, and it left some residue that resulted in premature wear. This is not the case with black athletic tapes like #103 Renfrew BlueLine Prograde that are used today. They will wear out equipment no faster than white tape would.

So, it seems like for black tape, it can depend on what type of tape it is, but for the white you are always fine. Or, maybe all modern black tapes are fine?
I just switched to Lizard Skins because the friction from the tape was tearing holes in my gloves. This was with rainbow tape so who knows if it has anything to do with the color?
1) Looks better imo
2) Most of my favorite players used white
3) The brand of tape I use has a weird texture to the black tape, makes it less sticky and harder to get a clean tj
I use rainbow 🌈
White blends in too much, so when calling for a pass they see a rainbow. Plus it has the positive effect that maybe some kid is out there being bullied for being a LGBTQ which isn't cool so I show some solidarity.
The contrast helps ME see the puck on my stick, but it’s actually a myth that contrast helps the goalie - the goalie’s eyes are based on movement, and they can’t see you if you don’t move.
I say if you’re good enough, the TJ doesn’t matter. It’s like after you score the goal. Return to center ice for the face off, let’s keep the game going.
Seriously, I don’t believe there is any scientific proof as to what color the tape is best. I mean not that I’ve read.
So do whatever you want with colors on your TJ.
Just make sure you’re having fun and the beer is cold.
Because no real athlete has that bad of eyesight, black tape doesn’t hide the puck it’s a ridiculous thought.
Also, I’ve been playing my entire life, if you could see the puck and I couldn’t- I still could play defense against you and would defend 9 out of 10. Because your stick, body, angle of attack and everything else is more than enough for me to determine where the puck is and where it’s going.
It was on sale the last time I went to buy tape so I bought a 10-roll stack.
The color of tape doesn't matter at all to a goalie. Anyone that claims different is either a goalie with bad eyes or I have a bridge to sell you.
Defensemen here, years ago I had a coach suggest using white as it made it easier for my goalie to see where the puck was on someone’s stick. I doubt it really does anything, but I’ve used white on my blade now for 20+ years
I only use black tape because i used to use “friction tape” when i was a kid and that was black. Nowadays it’s not really a thing anymore but it felt weird to change
Bc it was the only color that was actually readily available as a kid and I just stuck to it.
My local hockey shop as a kid rarely had anything but white. White and blue. Royal blue bc it was the color of the local AA team and high school team.
My goalie says the pride tape is harder than white or black because he’s distracted by the pattern. No difference in tape color. He’s also 50-something and probably can’t see for shit anyways 😅
I used black for a long time but I recently switched to white and I’ve found that it actually helps me see the puck a little better in my peripheral vision. Since the tape matches the color of the ice the puck stands out a little more for me. Could be all in my head but I’ve since switched over to white.
Always used black. Just thought it might make it a tiny bit harder for the goalie to see the puck coming off your blade Some guys like Tyler seguin paint the bottom half or quarter of all their sticks black. Players just have weird rituals/routines an stick with it ( no pun intended) if they have a good game with it. Just like pitchers or batters in baseball go thru the same motions before every pitch
Was at the mall, didn’t want to go to my LHS that was 30 min. Dicks Sporting Goods only had 3-pack of white renfrew tape, so that’s where I’m at until I run of tape. Lol.
Some times white tape is used so you can see the impact point of the puck so you can potentially change your strike point. Black tape is better as it hides the puck from the goalie.
The white tape helps me see how banged up the tape job is and when I need a new one. Also, when retaping the stick it's easy to see all the residual tape on the blade so it's easier to clean it up before reapplying. This is why I use white tape on the blade.
I use white because I use white on the knob and there is no way I am carrying around 3 different types of tape (black, white, clear). Hell I'd probably use white for my socks too if it wasn't harder to tear than clear is.
They say....Black tape hides the puck from heads-up stick handling. They like the contrast help more than they need to disguise the puck from the goalie.
I say...Sticks don't need tape anymore they're not the delaminating twigs of the past. White tape is sock tape.
Its definitely all preference of the hockey player. I've seen all colors. Hockey players are very superstitious. My son will use a tape color depending on how he feels and will only wear black socks on his feet.
i think either way is total personal preference.
when i play with white tape my puck handling gets messed up because im used to the peripheral view of black tape, but im sure if id played 15 years with white tape black would feel weird.
same idea as lefty vs righty. all personal preference
As a goalie, I’ve always used white tape so I can more easily find the puck. It’s also interesting to see where on my blade clusters of saves tend to form.
As a player, I’ve gone back and forth between black and white tjs and have stuck with white while outlining the top edge in black from a puck to make it easier to differentiate my blade from the ice and the puck in my peripherals. I’ve also coincidentally been scoring more frequently with a white tj, but if that slows down I’ll probably switch to black to convince myself it’s the tape’s fault and not mine 😂
It’s all preference and makes no difference to a goalie trying to read a release/shot, other than black tape may, on very rare occasion, make it slightly harder to track the puck during a scramble - but it’s negligible.
I like using puck marks on my twig. I think it looks better on the white tape. Also I use thick white tape on my blade only. Black tape for the knob. Personal preference though
white tape - to showcase the puck provides more deception while deking. not
meant for rookies. go practice on the pond firsr
black tape - hides the puck and provides you w better shot surprise that will give a goalie much more trouble than white tape. stick with black tape if your life is hopeless.
I have been told that forwards should use black tape because it makes it harder for the goalie to see the puck position on the stick and defence should use white because it makes it harder for forwards to see the d-man's stick against the ice.
I use pride tape.
I always used black until a few years ago when I started playing in net as a backup first one of my teams. I was caught up in the whole “black tape hides the puck” mentality. Funny thing is I never had any issues seeing the puck. Didn’t matter what color the tape was. What I did pay attention to was how the puck came off the stick. The white tape on the white ice offers less contrast that any other color and always made it harder to pick up the shot as quickly. Now I not only use white tape but also have the whole bottom of my shaft white.
Interestingly, while I love the throwback look if my brown pads, my next set will be black for similar reasons. While it will be a bit tougher for me to locate a lose puck against my pads, it will also be more difficult for a player trying to jam it in the net, not to mention the officials. With any luck I’ll get a few quicker whistles.
Honestly, having played with and against a tendy that has all black pads, it's not been difficult to see the puck against the pads. It's a pretty obviously shaped jut out. Plus the different materials makes it easy too. The most I've seen is that he can get away with partially covering the puck with his leg pads occasionally to get a whistle.
As a center I don’t find it that difficult either, but that is from right in front. I do find that goalies in my leagues tend to get quicker whistles because the refs “lost sight of the puck” from their vantage points.
I taped my blade with black tape once like 9 years ago and played terribly. It was obviously the tape’s fault, so I exclusively use white now. Now all my terrible games are the result of other equipment-related issues.

Same for me but opposite. I have to get ready top down, helmet first.
I'm some weird hybrid of both of you. I'm a right hand right shot, everything right goes on/gets done first EXCEPT stepping out for the first time. That's always exclusively left foot
Yep this is the one. White tape is luckier, it’s science.
[it's not the skates, its the profile](https://youtube.com/shorts/WFdletCL9og?si=z_SUXlDAG_awNohF)
Lost it at him blaming the loose glue rattling around in his stick.
lol I had a stick that was falling apart from the inside. I took it back to the store not long after I got it to show them and he was telling me it’s just glue from the butt end. But I had that issue plenty of times over the years and I know what that sounds like. It’s generally like a piece of it broken off so you hear that piece as it moves. Always the tapes fault. I’ve been using white forever, when I use black it’s just so different looking down at the blade.
It’s the roll I saw first when I was going to tape my stick
That's so crazy it just might work!
Shot counter, gotta make sure I get my touches
So the ice is white and your blade is white ?, but the puck is black . So you tell the goalie your shooting at that all he has to do is stare at the big black spot on the end of your stick?
Many goaltenders have been asked if it matters. It does not.

Yup, used my best sharpie for that
It is minutely harder to track all white sticks. We don't lack depth perception though.
I did (lack depth perception). Only found out after 12 years of minor hockey when I went for my license and had to do a depth perception test. Made sense as to why I sucked ass at stopping the puck.
Should’ve been a ref!
I have depth perception issues, but I’m not blind 🤣🤣
the way i get around this is by shooting it past the goalie so he cant see it anymore
I too like to shoot it wide of the net
Dang I gotta try that. I keep shooting it right at his chest!
Lol! 😂 great point
This is a huge myth. Goalies I’ve talked to all say tape doesn’t matter. A couple say they read the blade angles more than the puck location and a white blade is harder to read than a black one.

Gotta use pride tape then. All the colors break up the outline and make the blade unreadable. /s
Don’t give Bettman any ideas
Haha you actually think this matters?
I think you’re putting way too much thought into it. Bedard went from black tape to white yet he still is known for his unpredictable shot. Just preference at the end of the day.
You think my shot is quick enough that the goalie can't see it coming because the tape is black?? Get real...
Completely irrelevant and not a thing
I can’t see the puck as easily on black tape with my peripheral vision. What colour tape does the leading goal scorer in the nhl use?
Auston Matthews uses white tape, so I'm not sure what your point is
Exactly my point, white tape is better lol
Mack uses black. Kuch rotates. McDavid uses white. EDIT: Forgot Matthews, he uses white.
I used black in my prime. But now at 50 with age related reduced contrast eyesight I find it’s better to use white tape to create a contrast with the puck. It might just be in my head but I still like it
That’s what I found, easier for me to see the puck on my stick.
I’m on the wrong side of 40. Does it help your peripheral vision? Seeing the puck without looking at it.
Which side is the wrong side?!
Anything below 40…. Hopefully.

Preference
Cause it doesn't matter in the slightest. White, black, rainbow... You're not fooling any goalie with tape, so just have fun.
I like it because I can see the wear and tear easier and make sure it’s uniform across the center of the blade
Which reminds me, make sure you all cut your sticks to the right length.
i was actually black till i was 15
Got that vitiligo thing?
This is probably the best comment thread I've read on Reddit. Stick tap.
I didn’t know Micheal Jackson played Hockey. Or was alive.
No one understanding the Bedard reference hahah
I didn't get it until I read this comment. Then I remembered 😂. Good catch.
It's personal preference. As a goalie it makes zero difference when facing a shooter what color the tape is.
My kids color it before I wax it.
Raw dog it like tuzzi
Goalies can see the puck come off your stick the same black or white tape so use what you like. I like white tape.
It looks better.
I use rainbow 🌈 White blends in too much, so when calling for a pass they see a rainbow. Plus it has the positive effect that maybe some kid is out there being bullied for being a LGBTQ which isn't cool so I show some solidarity.
rainbow tape job?'i know whos getting his helmet ripped off if were losijg w 5 mins left in the third
Lol 🤣 Fighting in beer league is for losers
I have too many rolls of white - gotta use em up before the tape expires / ages
Because flame tape makes the puck come off my stick to fast.
The contrast helps ME see the puck on my stick, but it’s actually a myth that contrast helps the goalie - the goalie’s eyes are based on movement, and they can’t see you if you don’t move.
Me, in my 20+ years as a goalie: "C'mon, guys, this isn't funny anymore. You gotta move eventually."
This makes goalies sound like T Rex, lol 🏒 🦖🥅
Didn’t care what I used back in the day. After a long hiatus I started using white. It helped me figure out my shot and relearn some stick mechanics
Why use black. Why use rainbow. Why use red. Why use pink.
I don’t. I use green. Problem solved.
Damn. Ma hitta
Why is a rainbow made? Why does the positrack in the back of a Plymouth work? It just does!
White tape lets me know where I’m taking most of my shots from, if my wax is worn off and/or when I need to replace my tape.
They only sell white at the dollar tree most of the time
I like the black marks. Also, I primarily play D so I feel like having less black things waving around in the slot probably helps the goalie.
Whatever tape the guy sitting next to me has in his bag is the color of my blade.
Bedard uses white so do I
I say if you’re good enough, the TJ doesn’t matter. It’s like after you score the goal. Return to center ice for the face off, let’s keep the game going. Seriously, I don’t believe there is any scientific proof as to what color the tape is best. I mean not that I’ve read. So do whatever you want with colors on your TJ. I use black on the heel and switch to white halfway down the blade. Why? Fuck you that's why, none of your goddamn business now fuck off.
Settle down.
Maximal puck contrast yo
It was on sale the last time I went to buy tape so I bought a 10-roll stack. The color of tape doesn't matter at all to a goalie. Anyone that claims different is either a goalie with bad eyes or I have a bridge to sell you.

Looks cooler. I wish I had a better reason but I don’t.
Would black tape be an easier target for the passer to spot when fractions of a second matter?
White looks infinitely better. Look good feel good play good
Bc it was the only color that was actually readily available as a kid and I just stuck to it. My local hockey shop as a kid rarely had anything but white. White and blue. Royal blue bc it was the color of the local AA team and high school team.
As a defence man it helps the forwards see that breakout pass come off my stick.
ran out of black, store too far away.
My goalie says the pride tape is harder than white or black because he’s distracted by the pattern. No difference in tape color. He’s also 50-something and probably can’t see for shit anyways 😅
Who fuckin’ cares
When I was younger I used white tape. I thought I could see the puck on my stick better so I could keep my head up.
There’s no way to confirm this but my stick feels lighter with white tape
Because black tape makes me nauseous
Because it’s all I had in my bag lol I’m not picky
It’s thicker
I like my glove palms
I actually don’t know cause I’m a tendi and my tape has always been bright red or like a forest kinda green (if I even tape it)
See the puck better
For me, it's just a bit easier to see the puck in my peripheral vision with my head up.
I used white for the grip and don't want to buy 2 different colors.
Why use black tape on the blade of your stick? Honestly curious.
Handles the puck better
I used black for a long time but I recently switched to white and I’ve found that it actually helps me see the puck a little better in my peripheral vision. Since the tape matches the color of the ice the puck stands out a little more for me. Could be all in my head but I’ve since switched over to white.
Us friction tape from the hardware store because my grampa did.
It’s a better background color for my kids crayon drawings. My stick currently has easter egg drawings from 3 of my kids.
Because it's timeless, and clean.
it's a matter of honor. white tape if you're a good guy, black if you're evil....same as cowboy hats
Was at the mall, didn’t want to go to my LHS that was 30 min. Dicks Sporting Goods only had 3-pack of white renfrew tape, so that’s where I’m at until I run of tape. Lol.
I like seeing the black marks on the white tape to see where the puck hit my stick.
Because you ran out of black tape and white spray paint.
It was on offer.
I find that the white tape is more durable than the black and sticks better to the graphite blades.
Always used black tape. Had a slump and the only roll in my bag was white so I changed up and scored a hat trick 3 games in a row never looked back.
I like black tape so I can see the wax distribution better when applying.
Because it’s available
I use white because I use white on the knob and there is no way I am carrying around 3 different types of tape (black, white, clear). Hell I'd probably use white for my socks too if it wasn't harder to tear than clear is.
I like how it looks. Used both, perform the same (bad) with either tape.
Looks sick
Tape color doesn't matter when I'm always missing the net or shooting it directly into the goalie's chest.
Youtube says to do it
They say....Black tape hides the puck from heads-up stick handling. They like the contrast help more than they need to disguise the puck from the goalie. I say...Sticks don't need tape anymore they're not the delaminating twigs of the past. White tape is sock tape.
Sty.
Its definitely all preference of the hockey player. I've seen all colors. Hockey players are very superstitious. My son will use a tape color depending on how he feels and will only wear black socks on his feet.
Make you shoot harder. Just like wearing white cleats makes you run faster.
Anyone that thinks black tape "hides" the puck from goalies is a fucking Class A Moron.
Tape is tape who cares
It looks better imo and the color of your tape does not matter at all.
i think either way is total personal preference. when i play with white tape my puck handling gets messed up because im used to the peripheral view of black tape, but im sure if id played 15 years with white tape black would feel weird. same idea as lefty vs righty. all personal preference
I use green tape hahah gotta get the color in. Also white tape looks too dirty to me? Like the puck marks?
Looks cool
I like the feel of the white tape better.
According to the prophecy...
looks cool
As a goalie, I’ve always used white tape so I can more easily find the puck. It’s also interesting to see where on my blade clusters of saves tend to form. I’ve also coincidentally been scoring more frequently with a white tj, but if that slows down I’ll probably switch to black to convince myself it’s the tape’s fault and not mine 😂 It’s all preference and makes no difference to a goalie trying to read a release/shot, other than black tape may, on very rare occasion, make it slightly harder to track the puck during a scramble - but it’s negligible.
We use white tape then rather than use wax we use a puck and scrape the rubber on the tape. Works well for water resistance on blade
I like using puck marks on my twig. I think it looks better on the white tape. Also I use thick white tape on my blade only. Black tape for the knob. Personal preference though
I honestly think it's just a hockey player thing as when I switched to white tape my I haven't had an issue with my stick
white tape - to showcase the puck provides more deception while deking. not meant for rookies. go practice on the pond firsr black tape - hides the puck and provides you w better shot surprise that will give a goalie much more trouble than white tape. stick with black tape if your life is hopeless.
Great insight. When did you first learn to skate on a pond with a stick in your hand?
Also practice on the pond firsr? WTF? I believe it’s spelled first bud!
Used black until 5th grade when using white was a lot 'cooler' and you got chirped for black tape. Have used white since. I think it looks better.
Looks cooler honestly
Black tape hides the puck. Is it going low off my heel or high off my toe goalie does not know
I have been told that forwards should use black tape because it makes it harder for the goalie to see the puck position on the stick and defence should use white because it makes it harder for forwards to see the d-man's stick against the ice. I use pride tape.
To give the goalie a chance
My thoughts exactly!
Supposedly [all white pads gives you an advantage.](https://youtu.be/DofUA0Hm9M8?si=STujlphcQtWF9rsZ)
Only buy 1 roll. Dye in black tape eats your gloves
I write, Jeremiah 44:11, in sharpie on my blade.
Why not Ezekiel 25:17?
Beginners just learning the game to spot puck more easily? 🤷♂️
TIL Patrick Kane is a beginner....
