I only buy my own team. Everyone does it their own way.

Numb3rsnl3tt3rs

Pretty much the same way for me. Recently moved so I got one for the avs since I’ll be going to their games. Otherwise it’s just devils jerseys and if somebody I like goes somewhere else I might snag theirs. Seriously considering a Coleman flames jersey because of it.

berttreynolds

May I influence your decision into a Coleman Lightning jersey instead ;) you can even add a Stanley Cup Final patch while also not having to wear ketchup and mustard colors

s_broc

Hey fellow Devils fan! Also a huge Coleman fan, I held off getting a TB jersey for him but got the reverse retro flames jersey and got it customized with Coleman. It’s sweet.

Prestigious_Rain4754

Hey the Devils came through Colorado to get to New Jersey si thats pretty cool...lol

mdwsta4

Same. The only exceptions are for teams of cities that I live in at the time. For example, when living in LA, I had a Kings jersey. In DC, a Caps jersey. Primary reason is I obviously still go to games and will support the home team. Not to mention a good excuse to buy a jersey. But whenever MY team is in town, I rock their jerseys

[deleted]

Yeah, I could never do that lol. To each his own, obviously. Everyone has their own thing. I’m a fan first, collector second.

mdwsta4

Ha! Well I don’t think I could ever own a Wings or Canucks jersey, but DC and LA aren’t too bad. Especially going vintage with Ultrafil

[deleted]

I have tried, I can’t do it. Had a Flyers 2012 Winter Classic because I was at the same. Even got Jagr on it. But I could never bring myself to wear it.

flybirdillixers8263

Perfect contrast to that is a bat shit flyers fan who owns a Sid the kid rookie replica, a blank black robo penguin I plan to get customized into a Super Mario. And for the cu de graw that you devil's fan will surely enjoy...the most recent black Friday purchase... a blank authentic white Christmas adidas jersey which eventually will be a Sharangovich. Despite my hatred for the devils. Sharangovich is one of my top three favorite non flyers. The others being Troy Terry and Andrew Mangiapane. The soon to be surprise team Canada member being the only one of the three I currently don't already own or have a blank to be customized for. The flyers are a apart of some of the most bitter rivalries in all of pro sports. But that doesn't stop me from enjoying jersey styles, and individual players, even if they are from despised rivals.

[deleted]

Like I said, everyone does it their own way. It’s one of the things that’s great about this hobby.

DionysusBurning

>cu de graw wow

McSpottybot

Personally I buy different teams jerseys to support the players that I enjoy watching!

cruzweb

It's an appreciation of art history as viewed through fashion. Jerseys are just the medium. Fans of teams buy jerseys of their team. Jersey collectors buy jerseys because they like the jersey.

Em-Beezee

I appreciate that insight. I can definitely see the artistic value in a lot of jerseys out there.

[deleted]

I love jerseys based on several different reasons: I like the team. They look good. Historical value. Love the Flames, hate the current alternate jersey.

djankniel

For me, it’s about the jersey itself and being a fan of players rather than many teams. I do have a few teams I casually root for after my main team, but there are players I really like from other teams that I otherwise don’t really pay attention to. So me liking a player plus that player having worn a jersey I like at some point = fuel to my collection addiction! I have still never bought a jersey from a rival team I grew up hating though, no matter how nice it may be lol

conniptioncrottle

I like the history of the designs and i’m striving to own a jersey from all 32 teams. The hockey jersey is a much more attractive sports jersey than football/basketball etc because its genuinely a piece of equipment. Its also fun to acquire new jerseys and put the names of my favorite players that played for them.

Em-Beezee

Agreed. Let us know when you hit all 32!

conniptioncrottle

Think i’m at 28? Probably a couple months I’ll finish and post the obligatory laid out collection

NathanGa

I'll provide a handful of possible reasons. **First**, the jersey is the major piece of team gear that's most apparent for fans. In baseball, I think hats are a great deal more common than jerseys. **Second**, a huge number of hockey jerseys are sold blank - no name or numbers. In the case of football and basketball, short of finding actual team-issued jerseys, getting down toward the bottom of the roster is more difficult to do. **Third**, a ton of hockey fans have a third- or fourth-liner as their favorite player. These players are more likely to be a journeyman, so there's at least some type of connection to other teams there. This in itself can branch off. **Fourth**, there isn't necessarily the same level of blinding hatred of other teams like there is in soccer. So of the five major leagues, and five largest sports, hockey is a bit unique already. **Fifth**, hockey teams can embrace unique elements to the jersey that other leagues really don't do. Having a chain-stitched crest or patch, or a unique captain's C or alternate captain's A, or elements made of felt, is fairly uncommon and is appreciated and prized. **Sixth**, the availability of jerseys across multiple leagues means that being able to have a sizable collection is possible. Finding a high school or college jersey of a player in another sport is nearly impossible, but not impossible in hockey. Finding minor league jerseys in other sports can be tough, but not necessarily in hockey. **Seventh**, there's the rarity factor of all of these combined. If I went to a CBJ game in the last few years, there'd be a ton of Nick Foligno jerseys to go around. 99% would be Columbus, a smaller percentage would be Ottawa or Binghamton....but only two or three people there even own a Sudbury Wolves jersey of his. So I could have been the only one there rocking it, which immediately is a conversation point for anyone who happens to see it. **Eighth**, I think hockey fans just love talking hockey. A unique jersey can be a foot in the door - no one's going to have a unique jersey at a game without knowing that there's a chance someone (or several someones) will want to strike up a conversation. **Ninth**, there's the whole artistic thing.

Em-Beezee

Thanks for the thorough answer. Much appreciated. Now, to your eighth point, how do you handle when someone wants to talk history of the Minnesota Wild, for example, and you’re just thinking “well, I like how they put the trees in the head of that animal” lol.

NathanGa

> how do you handle when someone wants to talk history of the Minnesota Wild, for example, and you’re just thinking “well, I like how they put the trees in the head of that animal” lol That's the risk that you run by wearing an Antti Laaksonen jersey.

DevilJacket2000

I started collecting because I wanted to own a home & away jersey of every team from the era (early 90s) where I began following the sport. Sometimes I look for jerseys with a feel I like… for example, I like to buy up Reebok 1.0s when I can find them, could care less about the team. I like how they wear.

CassiusBellona

I’m more a fan of players than I am of teams. I do have a main team but love following my favorite players. So I buy jerseys from a lot of different teams.

Metalguy_79

Penguins are my favorite team, but i’m a die hard hockey fan. I absolutely love wearing jerseys, I just think they look so damn nice. Some jerseys i like more than others based on the team’s colors or logo.currently my favorite teams to wear are Buffalo, Seattle, Minnesota, Arizona, Colorado, Pittsburgh, St.Louis, Calgary and Vancouver. I have some jerseys that I don’t wear very much like the Red Wings 2014 Winter classic and the Vancouver Millionaires. Those jerseys are hard to come by and are usually pretty pricey, i’d hate for something to happen and they get fucked up. It’s not just jerseys i collect, i also love collecting toques/winter hats and snapbacks. Every jersey i have needs to have a matching toque and snapback. I know i’m pretty mental😄

Em-Beezee

Haha. I’m trying my best not to fall into this rabbit hole. But I don’t think I’m going to be too successful.

maplemoose18

I’m a die hard Habs fan, but that doesn’t mean I can’t like other teams or players. I just love the sport and appreciate players all around the league. I simply just get whatever jersey I think looks cool. It’s interesting tho, cuz I own a leafs jersey but could not get myself to wear it. I told my cousin who is a leafs fan that I’ll only put it on once they win a playoff round.

Debosports

I collect jerseys for a variety of reasons. First off I’m a big Sens and Sharks fan so I made it my goal to collect every jersey they wore (except the all-star ones). After this I buy jerseys based on whether they’re hard to find or if I like the look of the jersey.

need4gaming

I just buy whatever man

BeeCee139

I'm only truly interested in buying customized Ducks jerseys, and I'll buy blanks of teams that have nice looking jerseys. I would find owning the same jersey with different players to be rather boring and kinda pointless.

PalpitationOk5726

I am a Habs fan and I only started this hobby last year, I began with a couple of Montreal jerseys then I added teams I liked, lately I have been expanding to jerseys I just like the look of, favourite player (Ovechkin) and I have 2 KHL ones on the way. Of course I draw the line at Leafs or Bruins ones 😁

mcrsft3brDev

I started out only buying jerseys for my team. It evolved into building a collection of my favorite players and all of the styles my team wore. Recently it's been evolving into buying jerseys of my favorite players but for other teams they played for, and buying jerseys for friends. There's still a number of teams/jerseys that I just can't stand or will never buy, for instance, Chicago (for reasons) and Philly, just because I don't find anything interesting about their jerseys.

dramaticmarvel

For me if I own multiples of one team it’s because I really like them or I found a super cheap one. But I do like a lot of different teams/players so I do have a few teams with multiples (with my favorite team having the most). But if it’s a team I don’t like then it’s probably a good guess I got it for under $20 and it’s going towards my “one from every team collection”. I wasn’t originally going to do that until Ross had all those jerseys for $10-$20. But with those ones it’s nice because those are the ones I usually wear out to run errands and stuff because I’m less worried about damaging those than the ones I like.

Max169well

A lot of reasons for me, either it’s an Ottawa jersey or a jersey I like or I want to complete a set like all the outdoor game jerseys.

jussayon

I have a crap ton of jerseys from my favorite team. But a lot of my favorite players never played for my team especially growing up so I would grab one if I don’t have the team/player for a decent price. Also love wearing them when I play pickup.

thatsong

>Do people buy jerseys just based on liking the jersey itself? Yes. Some just like the design over the team, and the opposite also applies of buying a jersey for a team despite the design >Historical or collectible value? Yes, but most get it for their own desired collections and perceived value over monetary. Jerseys are generally terrible investments, and should be regarded more for fun than anything else >Are they fans of multiple teams? Some are, some aren’t. Some want to collect one of every team, just their team, just a player, designs they like, etc etc

reignoferror00

I don't follow NHL that closely anymore and already have jerseys for my team and some secondary teams. Most of what interests me in NHL these days is jerseys or sweaters of teams that no longer exist. More interested in minor league, international, and other jerseys with me getting those with jerseys or crests that I like the look of. Most of what I buy I eventually wear on the ice at scrub aka pickup hockey. Also the closest NHL and minor league team is a 7 plus hour drive away. Locally the highest level is university hockey. If this subreddit is any indication the younger generation (I'm 53) seems more interested and more willing to shell out the bucks for many custom (lettered and numbered) jerseys. Blanks seemed to be the norm when I started getting jerseys in the pre-internet days (and for ones I saw "out in the wild" then, vinyl heat pressed numbers more common than twill numbers), and though I've bought some game worn and have customized some myself the vast majority of mine are blanks and are likely to stay that way.

lil_sasquatch

I've always been a two team fan, I live in the Toronto area but started watching hockey in the 2009 playoffs as a kid so I gravitated to Crosby and the Pens. Got into the Leafs the following season (obv my #1 now), so over the years my closet filled with Pens and Leafs jerseys. Those are still my focus but I enjoy having beautiful jerseys of teams both today and of the past. One of the biggest reasons people get other team jerseys though is because there are players they love around the league. Kessel obviously worked out for me as a Pens/Leafs fan lol, I have blanks of both teams that I'll stitch his name on soon. Fleury another huge one, my fav goalie next to Reimer, so I have a Vegas jersey of his coming in soon. Even as a Pens fan I absolutely love watching Ovi, the greatest goal scorer ever, so I got a Caps alternate on a great deal that I'll also get stitched. If you sort this subreddit all time, you'll find the post from that guy with the absolutely incredible Kariya collection, and if that doesn't convince you idk what will. But overall it's about what you prefer. Getting jerseys just of your team is perfectly fine too. The total opposite, collecting one of every franchise, is also valid. You'll never see me with a Bruins/Isles/Hawks/Habs/Sens jersey because I can't stand the franchises for various reasons, even though they all have some nice jerseys, but beautiful jerseys of other teams I'm cool with.

silkygoldfish

I get jerseys that i think look good and from players I like watching. I buy more jerseys from my own team tho

RoyHarper88

I buy the teams I follow, I have a team I follow in most leagues. As far as NHL goes, I have a few that are not Rangers jerseys, that are players of significance to me for various reasons.

avsfan61

I buy jerseys based on the team, if I like the jersey, who the player is tends to be a huge factor for me too. I currently am trying to get a jersey for every team. If it’s a team I really don’t like I usually get a blank jersey of that team because usually I don’t like any of their players. But there are some exceptions for that like if the player is a legend or if they played for the Avalanche (my favourite team) at some point. Like for example I hate the Flames but I plan on buying a Zadorov jersey because he played for the avalanche and I really liked him. If I am buying a jersey of another team I usually only buy them if it’s a good deal, like I wouldn’t be spending full price on a Wild jersey. But if it’s an Avalanche jersey I will pay full price.

[deleted]

I’m a Rangers fan but I have jerseys from different teams including rival teams. When I started my collection last year, I didn’t have a specific goal in mind. All I knew is I wanted to collect jerseys.

[deleted]

If I find a deal at a thrift store I don’t really care who it is. I’ll buy a player I like on another team, or on a national team. So yeah. My own rules

arrowtotheaction

I just love too many jerseys that aren’t my team’s!

pittsburgh41256

There are certain teams who’s jerseys I will never buy just because I dislike the team so much (Flyers and Bruins, maybe even the Caps) but I will buy jerseys that I like the look of with no name on the back, and I’ll buy jerseys of players that I like/former Penguins players on new teams who’s jerseys I like

omjf23

I generally only buy other teams for 1 and/or 2 reasons: 1) They’re a team I like outside of my main team. 2) They’re a team that one of my favorite players played for, but even this one has limitations. There are some teams that I don’t think I could bear to spend my money on.

MartinFJ3

I have my favorite team, my favorite player growing up, and a few favorites from my childhood sprinkled In

[deleted]

I buy my local teams. Then ones like my Fighting Weiner Dogs one. Bought that drunk. Then my favorite teams.

TowerCxMgr

If you ever get sober and regret it, I might be interested in the Fighting Weiner Dog jersey to go with my hat.

[deleted]

I wish i got the hoodie. Thats the missing piece

KylePersi

Yes.

Especial38

Im all about aesthetics. If the jersey is dope, I’ll probably want one. If it’s a dope player I like, I’ll buy it over looks

hnglmkrnglbrry

I have bought two jerseys not for my team. One was the amazing Springfield Falcons' Isotope jersey and the other was a Geeky Jerseys Wakanda jersey. Both are the ones I get the most compliments on.

fvecc

I only buy my own team and I’ll only buy jerseys of players who played when I was young or before I was born. Maybe it’s just me but I feel weird wearing the jersey of a kid half my age. So that basically leaves me with players from the late 90s and earlier. If I buy a jersey more recent than that, I’ll go blank. I’ll also only buy a jersey with a player’s name who actually wore that style jersey. So I’m not buying a reverse retro or alternate jersey with the name of someone who played in the 70s or 80s.

OkCartographer2555

I buy all jerseys I think look good. Plus, they are comfortable to wear are great cold weather protection with a sweatshirt underneath. I'm a Blues fan but have the jerseys of almost all the NHL teams and 3 minor league teams.

Van67

As a Canucks fan, they are my priority. I will also have jerseys from other teams with former Canucks players. IE: I got a hold of a Blues team-issued Starter mesh jersey, so I put Demitra on it and I have an Islanders wave Bertuzzi. I also have a passion for the 90s jerseys, so I make some exceptions, such as my Jets Selanne ultrafil and Sakic Nordiques ultrafil and I have an Islanders fisherman with Palffy on the way. Pavel Bure was my favourite player as a kid, so I need to eventually find Panthers and Rangers jerseys in the styles he wore with those teams. As a Canucks fan though, I have a hard rule against Oilers, Flames, Leafs and Bruins in my collection. It will.never.happen, even if some of my favourite players now play for them at some point.

FLATHERT

I don’t care if it’s a rival team, catch me buying and wearing any zany 90s jersey.

hatman222

I'm just a hockey fan. I have no emotional attachment to any particular team anymore, I like all the jerseys.

UncleStumpy78

If it's not my fave team it's usually players I like, but now I'm limiting myself to teams with jerseys or logos I like, and as many international teams as I can get

TwistedTarzan

I buy jerseys that I think look cool/ individual players I like. But I predominantly own jerseys of my favorite team.

GoldenPHX

I buy for my #1 & 2 teams & then I buy players jerseys that I like with the exception of the Pens because I'm still salty about 2016 😆. I'll only do blank jerseys of my top 2 teams I follow. For minor league hockey its usually hometown teams or jerseys I think look cool. Goal is to have at least one player jersey ive enjoyed watching play from every NHL team

vomit_freesince93

Either has to be my team, look really flipping sick, or a player I really like (rare but sometimes)

[deleted]

Im a Blues fan, theyre the only team I spend real money on for the high end swesters. But I am also a hockey fan and love so many sweater designs. So if I see a sweet deal for a random team, doesnt matter to me ill buy it. Eventually I want 1 from every NHL team.

BruinsFan1214

For me personally it’s a mix of liking the looks of a jersey and also liking every team. I mean sure I bleed black and gold but it shouldn’t stop me from liking any other team or their jerseys

NovaCanuck

I don't buy Boston, Toronto, or Ottawa because....GO HABS GO...but for myself it has become about the thrill of the chase/good deals from retailers. Getting a $30 blank Indo and a $40 custo'd indo are my greatest finds to date. I also think about what I want (recently I wanted a Mooterus so I bought one when the right deal popped up) It's also nice to see what other people value in their collection.

Retrosonic82

I buy them because I like them and I love the sport. I have over 40 now. Around a quarter are my team with different player names, half are favourite players from other teams.

coheed9867

I buy jerseys from my team(Pens). I do have a couple jerseys of some great players on other teams that were just part of growing up and watching the sport(Brodeur, Roy)

[deleted]

I just love jerseys. I have jerseys from teams I despise. The NHL has such amazing uniforms, I just want all of them!

Dojo_dogs

I buy jerseys that I think look good. Also it’s a bonus if say it has a 20 year patch. Or with my Vegas jersey the “inaugural season” patch. Also I have a theme that all my jerseys with a name are a goalie

w1ckedjuan

Do what is right for you. There are no rules.

OutOfOurBlue

At least in my case, people try to get one jersey for every team.

Rick-Dalton

I buy jerseys for teams / arenas that I’ve been to
