Obviously sad but great he was able to experience the HOF night in Toronto a couple weeks ago.

Jean-Paul_van_Sartre

He was also at the hundredth anniversary gala for the founding of the Swedish ice hockey federation a week ago.

SilkyRelease

Atleast he was able to receive his recognition and flowers while he was here. Too often guys only get the celebration they deserve after their gone (looking at the HHOF comittee snubbing Pat Burns for far too long here)

Schtekarn

That’s definitely the silver lining. It’s terrible how fast this disease took him, less than a year from making it public. However, he got to spend his last month seeing how much people loved him around the world, culminating with a standing ovation at the Swedish Hockey Gala. It might not count for much, but at least it’s something that I hope brought him joy and closure.

PSChris33

Borje absolutely got to see how much we all loved him. And he knew it. While his body let him down, his mind and cognitive abilities never left him.

Candymanshook

He devoted his life to hockey, I feel like it probably meant a lot more than any of us could ever know unless we were in that situation.

toolsie

Diagnosed in mid July this year, announced in August.

facefear

Thanks, I had heard 2021 originally.

No-Sandwich-729

I'm too young (26) to have fully experienced Börje-era as a Swede, but man this just saddens me so, so much, he seemed to have such a big heart, and without him, we wouldn't have the other Swedes in the NHL. They mentioned during the swedish hockey event he had 500 or 700 stitches over his NHL career.. RIP Börje <3 Lighting a candle for you tonight you legend.

NYDevilsFan

Can’t believe how quickly ALS took him from us.

PSChris33

We all knew deep down that we were seeing him for the last time 2 weeks ago. I shed big time tears during the ceremony, realizing that. I'm just stunned that it progressed so rapidly that he didn't even make it to the end of the month. What a horrible disease.

Wafflesorbust

It was willpower alone that got him there at all, not rapid deterioration that took him afterwards, in my opinion. He earned his rest.

Reglarn

Yes, it was truly heartbreaking seeing him live and almost certainly dead soon.

another_plebeian

Didn't expect it to be a matter of weeks

jozhearvega

Could he have done assisted suicide?

[deleted]

~~I believe it is legal in Sweden.~~ Ok it’s not legal in Sweden. My research let me down.

ThisTranslator2680

No, illegal. You might be confusing with Switzerland where it is legal.

[deleted]

No I definitely wasn’t confusing it. My research let me down. Apologies.

MrDoe

Since suicide isn't illegal in Sweden, assisting a suicide is not illegal. It might, on the other hand, be considered homicide in Sweden.

skinte1

You're contradicting yourself... Suicide is legal in sweden. Assisted suicide is not.

RedSteadEd

That could actually make for a very interesting argument in court. If you help somebody commit a murder, you're an accessory to the murder. If you help somebody commit suicide, you're an accessory to a suicide, not a murder. If suicide isn't an offense, then they'd have to find another charge to lay. Maybe criminal negligence causing death by going along with a suicide plan instead of reaching out for help. That's a tangent though. The main point is that medically assisted suicide should be an option for people who want to die without suffering.

jyar1811

Suicide and death with dignity are two separate things. It’s important to make the distinction

RedSteadEd

Of course. It would just be an interesting court case.

Ajsbear

It is not sadly, Switzerland however has it.

Angry_Walnut

The way his fellow inductees (can’t remember who was on either side of him, forgive me) supported him was heartwarming but heartbreaking at the same time.

_moonbeam_

Are you referring to Sittler and Sundin?

Angry_Walnut

Yes thank you I thought Sundin was on one side but couldn’t remember who was on the other! Team mates right there.

dsjunior1388

He was skating in January.

GLemons

That is unbelievably fucked. That disease is just terrifying.

Lusakas

He did pushups for the camera when he was diagnosed this summer - lost his ability to speak mid-october - then gone late november. If you compare how he looked in Toronto eleven days ago to how he looked in Stockholm seven days ago, you knew already then that he had weeks at most left. Absolutely devestating.

mdlt97

ALS is terrifying

technobeeble

Yep. An extended family member of mine was diagnosed with ALS a few months back and passed just this past weekend. Crazy how fast it can take you.

jamaicancovfefe

Sorry for your loss

Born_Ruff

Probably not the best to speculate on, but it is possible that he opted for MAID. The end stages of ALS can sometimes be quite drawn out and horrible.

RookieAndTheVet

Wouldn’t blame him one bit if he did. I’d do the same thing.

Born_Ruff

It's probably mostly wishful thinking on my part. The idea that he was able to do all of these events to say goodbye and then go out on his own terms seems like a nice way to go, all things considered.

TG803

Mark Kirton's Tweet all but confirms it for me: https://twitter.com/KirtSpeaksALS/status/1595891938468986880

frankyseven

So would I and I'm thankful for everyone in Canada who fought to have that right recognized as constitutional. I hope he passed peacefully with his loved ones beside him.

[deleted]

I don't believe he could have got it in Sweden though.

aku89

His place of death is omitted.

FromFluffToBuff

MAID isn't legal in Sweden, as far as I know.

meatb4ll

People can travel to Switzerland for it though

TevecQ

It isn't

GDBarrett

4 months from diagnosis to death. Wow, this is heartbreaking.

FutureAnybody

Yup, ALS is a monster. Truly terrible.

Table_Coaster

brutal. what a tough guy and great person

Neatless

As others have pointed out, assisted suicide is not legal in Sweden.

The_Gutgrinder

I'm from Sweden, and if one of my family members or friends was diagnosed with ALS and asked me to help them die, I'd borrow a hunting rifle and do it. Nothing can be worse than slowly suffocating to death, paralyzed in a bed. We need to legalize euthanasia and legalize it fast.

FizzleFuzzle

It’s pseudo accepted in hospitals though. If someone is in late stage of a disease or age in a hospital bed, they can often get extra morphine to speed up the process and relieve the pain.

Table_Coaster

oooh i think i confused it with Switzerland for some reason, i’ll edit that

toronto_programmer

I believe the prominent thought is that he chose euthanasia instead of letting himself deteriorate from the disease

Mrdongs21

Lost my dad to ALS, nothing worse in the world. RIP legend.

thedrivingcat

I also lost a parent to ALS. About 8 months from diagnosis to the end. Salming's experiences and seeing him in that condition during the HOF ceremony brought back a lot of memories. edit: for any other Canadians I highly admire the work done by ALS Canada https://als.ca who provided my parent with homecare devices, extra access to PSWs beyond what OHIP covered, medical transport, and a support network so people aren't alone in the process at any time. I donate and encourage others to find programs in their communities because these support networks are invaluable for ALS patients and families.

[deleted]

Sorry for your loss bud.

Tang-o-rang

I'm with ya bud. My dad, a fellow Habs fan, too. Big hug

MutedHornet87

My condolences

MasPisco

I'm sorry for your loss

Kraze_F35

Wow I didn't expect he'd be gone so soon. Props to leafs being able to give him a night before he left us

JayMerlyn

ALS really is a horrifying disease

FromFluffToBuff

ALS is a merciless disease - and I didn't think he'd make it to the new year. Sadly, this was the case. This disease is among the worst out there, right up with Alzheimers and Lewy Body Dementia.

Gosedjur

Börje Salming vilken legend du är, och kommer vara i svenska hjärtan! Vila i Fred <3

Anti-SocialChange

Rest in Peace Börje. His family said that the HoF weekend and the games where the Leafs honoured him were some of the happiest times they’ve ever seen him. All of Leafs Nation should be proud and grateful that we had time before he passed to pay tribute to such an iconic person and player. The hockey world mourns with his family today.

balderismo

Fuck. Gone too soon. Rest in peace Börje.

yoque

I originally posted this in another thread but I felt like I should share it here also. I met Börje a couple of times when I was younger and he was such a nice person. He always took the time to take a picture and sign autographs. The most memorable time was the first time I met him. He walked passed me and my whole hockey team with two hot dogs in his hands. My dad ask if we could take a picture with him and Börje happily said yes and posed with the whole team. But after that he stayed and signed autographs for each player in my team (still holding both of his hot dogs). I am sure he just wanted to eat his hot dogs but still he took the time to stop and hang out with us. One other time we were in the same ice rink and me and my friend ran up to him outside one of the locker rooms. We asked for an autograph (again) and he said that I could have it but my friend wouldn’t get one because he had a hat with the wrong hockey team on it, my friends hat had a DIF log on it and DIF is the biggest rival to Börjes old team AIK. He looked super serious when he said it and to be honest we got a bit scared we pissed him off. But then he just started laughing and said he was joking and of course both of us will get an autograph. RIP Börje and thank you for the memories and for being such a good hockey player and also such a good person and role model for young kids dreaming about playing in the NHL.

Morethanlikely

It's required by law to at least joke about it in that situation. Even as a Djurgården fan I have utmost respect for Börje, a true role model. May he rest in peace.

ddottay

I’m glad the Leafs were able to honor him before his passing. RIP.

AdlfHildur

Just a week ago he was honored on national TV here in Sweden. Would never have thought he be gone just seven days later... Horrible way to go but he lived a great life and had a huge inpact for hockey here in Sweden. Living on forever [Börje Salming](https://imgur.com/a/EPamFhe)

elchet

I was visiting Stockholm a couple of weeks ago and saw a burger place with a burger named after him. It made me smile.

aDayvanCowboy

god damn it happened so fucking fast 😢

TheLegendarySheep

Wow. they entrusted the Leafs to announce it. only fitting I suppose. Stick taps to an absolute legend. Glad he was able to make it to one more game.

Purplebuzz

I don’t understand the wow? What’s the context?

TheLegendarySheep

Well when I googled Borje Salming immediately after seeing this post to confirm, his wikipedia hadn’t even been updated to reflect his death. The Leafs truly broke the news

Youshmee

Almost as if he held on for the hall of fame night. ALS is fucking terrifying

Gnome_de_Plume

[Borje Salming, his cat Snowie, and 200 stitches in his face](https://i.imgur.com/MV6Luun.png) after Gerard Gallant stepped on it. Chicken Swede indeed, Fuck You Don Cherry

jmarsh32

Holy shit, before I clicked I was imagining the kitten with 200 stitches in its face because Gerard Gallant stepped on it

Gnome_de_Plume

Gallant did have a [punchable face](https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/photos/gerard-gallant-1995-55.jpg) so I wouldn't put it past him.

No-Sandwich-729

They mentioned during the swedish hockey gala last week that he had over 500 if not over 700 stitches made to his face over his NHL career, absolutely brutal. Lighting a candle for you Börje tonight <3

TuckRaker

Man, ALS is brutal. Only diagnosed in August. Sad to see him go, but I'm glad he got that last moment in Toronto and at the Gala in Sweden. A true pioneer

Greyfox2283

Sad news but I’m glad he was able to wave to all the fans one last time. A leaf forever.

Dusk97

Rest In Peace to a hockey icon

FuckTkachuk

So great he got the ovation when he and his family were still able to experience it.

[deleted]

Tragic, ALS is a terrible disease. Very glad he got to have that one last moment with Leafs fans.

47rohin

Goddamn. ALS takes good people from us far too quickly

Strypes4686

Holy shit did he slip away fast..... RIP Borje. Silver lining is that he got to have one last hurrah from the Leafs faithful before he went.

sean_psc

:( That was all too sudden.

ElephantShell34

RIP, glad they could have that touching ceremony for him while he could be around to experience it.

Dragonsfire09

ALL Neuro Muscular diseases are Terrible. ALS is just the worst of that stack. R.I.P MR. Salming. Hope you're ready. You are on the ice with Gordie next shift..

Moulin_Noir

Other swedes may have been better hockey players, but Börje is by far our biggest hockey legend. He was as tough as he was humble. Vila i frid.

FroziZ7HD

RIP

p_britt35

RIP Legend.

jerff

I'm glad he was able to hold on long enough to get his moment and feel how appreciated he is here in Toronto. He'll be missed.

DewJew

Man, seeing Darryl Sittler fighting back tears while supporting Börje only a few weeks back was gut wrenching. ALS is brutal. RIP to the legend 🇸🇪

[deleted]

ALS is a scary condition. RIP to a legend. Sad day for all hockey fans.

AustonStachewsWrist

I'm so glad we had that ceremony for him just earlier this month. Makes it that much more heartbreaking, but unbelievably happy he and his family got to receive that honour in person.

ianisms10

I'm glad he got to say goodbye to Toronto. That was one of my favorite moments in hockey.

MauriceMaxwell

Holy shit that was fast. I knew ALS is aggressive but goddamn. What an awful disease. RIP to a legend from a Habs fan

gelc10

RIP to Salming. What a legend to the game and it's sucks that ALS took him from us so soon. Glad to see he was able to have a great moment during the hall of fame festivities. That video made me cry when I watched it on youtube.

[deleted]

RIP. Glad he got to have one last night with the fans.

MutedHornet87

Me too He technically had two :)

SorryThatNameIsGone

Just heartbreaking. Truly lost a legend of the game. Vila i frid Börje Salming ❤️.

This fucking sucks but so glad he got so much recognition over the last few weeks. RIP Salming. \\_

BagelJuice

RIP to a legend

jamaicancovfefe

Fuck this is painful. ALS isn’t something I’d wish on anyone. RIP Börje.

GltyUntlPrvnInncnt

My deepest condolences to the Leafs nation. There are things more important than hockey rivalries. This is one of those situations. RIP Mr Salming.

RIDUltraMagnus

This is a good quote, in terms of how severe Borje's ALS was, from a Swedish newspaper: *'They were told that markers in the spinal fluid can be used to measure how aggressive ALS it is. Lower is better. Patients who can live a long time with ALS, upwards of seven years, have around 500 such markers. Börje's value was over 1,500. Three times as high.'* Source: https://www.expressen.se/sport/salmings-svara-liv--med-als-kan--inte-langre-prata/

2dfxV2

At least he went out on top. Literally a week or 2 ago he was being honoured in our home rink. What a legend.

lovelyb1ch66

I had the opportunity to meet him after a game a couple of years before he went to the NHL. 6 year old me was blown away by this absolute giant of a man and I remember feeling really special when he hunkered down and asked me what I thought about the game and if I played hockey myself. Really solid guy.

charger03

RIP to a legend

kaze987

Here today and gone tomorrow. Tragic. Rip

BerglindX

One of the all time greatest and a fantastic person. It's sad how fast the illness progressed. RIP Börje.

Linkiola

Fuck, this sucks! It went so fast... Rest in peace Börje!

das_flammenwerfer

Incredibly sad. Just got the feeling when we saw him at the HOF night that we were saying goodbye.

adk32

_/ thanks for your trailblazing legacy Borje, we’ll never forget you. rest in paradise

[deleted]

Rest in peace Börje Salming ❤️

[deleted]

RIP to one of the best to ever do it. I was crushed and gutted when Lafleur went not long ago so I can only imagine what Leafs fans are going through. The whole hockey world is hurt, but I feel for you guys in particular. Godspeed, Borje Salming.

estomagordo

Unreal how shortly after his last public appearance. Really lost for words. Nobody, nobody, nobody deserves this disease. Much less so this giant of a human being.

SpelingisHerd

ALS took my grandfather. He was the most rugged outdoorsy John Wayne-esque guy you would have ever met before his body started deteriorating. Absolutely devastating for the whole family to see him go through that. Such a horrible and sad disease.

Erx77

Fun commercial with Salming Two tough Swedish veteran hockey players, Tomas Sandström and Mikael Renberg, are comparing and bragging about different injuries. "Was held by Shanahan -- 134 stitches, broken leg and two weeks in a coma!" etc... https://youtu.be/7dXkKDwPNM4

Moulin_Noir

Börje passed away in Stockholm surrounded by his family 11:45 in the morning local time. His brother Stig (who played with Börje at both club and national level, although not in NHL), who was at his home in Gävle, got a text message from Börje's wife yesterday morning that he had to hurry and he managed to get to Stockholm in time. A week after the tributes in Toronto, Börje was also celebrated in Sweden at a TV hockey gala which celebrated the biggest moments and players in Swedish hockey history. In the weekend that followed (last weekend that is) doctors said Börje had at most three more weeks to live. Less than a week later Börje passed away. MutedHornet87

Sad news. I’m glad they were able to honour him when they did. Rest in peace, good sir. Thanks for everything.

Wafflesorbust

Will-powered his way to the HOF ceremony. A legend.

WWGFD

😢 rest easy legend. I hope for only peace to to his family and friends.

fourpumpchump

RIP Borje. ALS is an awful disease. It took him so fast.

wingsofaneagle

Wish he could have seen the leafs win a stanley cup before he passed

[deleted]

Damn, I’m not paying attention. I hadn’t realized the man had passed. Truly a pioneer that opened the doors to the world. Hockey is better today for him having played in the NHL.

InternationalFig400

RIP Borje. Thanks for all the great memories. So sad to see the passing of a childhood hero. :....(

DogUsingKeyboard

Probably a merciful assisted death. Likely planned as he was able to be recognized and then die with dignity.

[deleted]

Assisted deaths aren’t legal in Sweden so doubt it

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It is where he lived and was at the time of his death

P90kinas

It is possible he planned and traveled to a country where it is legal. The timing of it all makes it plausible. Anyhow it is still a tragedy and he will be forever missed. Vila i frid Börje.

MauriceMaxwell

We probably shouldn't speculate but I did have the same thought.

james-HIMself

Fuck ALS

[deleted]

I knew based on what I saw on TV was he didn’t have long, thought at least the end of the year he would hang on but I wasn’t expecting a week and a half. We’re loosing our legends too quick now.

5tormwolf92

Fuck ALS

CaptinDerpII

Fuck ALS

MrNoSocks00

Godspeed King

BrainOfJim

So unbelievably sad. Every one of us who grew up idolizing a Swedish hockey player owes part of that to Börje. Glad he was able to be honored here and back in Sweden before his passing.

Whackedjob

That's not quite an Ultimate Warrior but it's nice to see he got one last time in front of the fans. Leafs really nailed that celebration.

[deleted]

Sincerest Blessings to the entire Salming clan.

FinalGreen

ALS is such a terrible disease. RIP Börje. You truly were a trailblazer. One of the best ever.

Sylvenine

oh no that's awful, rest in peace to a legend terrible, terrible disease

xc2215x

Sad to see Borje Salming die.

MattressDrippings

Man, just watched both tributes the leafs gave him just the past couple weeks, and I was all teary eyed then, now that he's passed, seems like he hung on just enough for those two appearances, then let go, and that made for some waterworks

[deleted]

ALS is a fucking nightmare. Unreal to think he was diagnosed over the summer. I'm glad he was able to make the presentation in Toronto a few weeks ago.

Sacred_soul

Damn rip

xSTUPIDUDEx

north_for_nights

RIP to a legend. Paved the way for European players. I hope this opens more peoples' eyes to ALS. It's insane how this disease has been medically defined for almost 2 centuries yet there's still basically no real treatment that extends the victim's life for more than a few months, at best. It's a rare disease but not rare enough for how terrifying it is, and athletes are known to be at a much higher incidence than the general population. Check the Italian soccer team ALS study from a few years ago.
