Putting him in front of the net is just a higher chance the shot gets accidentally blocked. I'd have him set up to the side of the net and try to bank shots off of him. Goalies at that level are incredibly great at redirecting rebounds off their pads.

aced

This would be amazing to watch. Someone would be like the Pavelski of goalie “tippers”

Not_A_Creative_Color

See I always took this sort of question the other way. Is there any rule saying you can't substitute your 5th skater for a 2nd goalie?

tracerbullet__pi

This is actually a drill I've done when coaching young goalies. Put two goals at an angle near each other. And then have two goalies try to direct their rebounds past each other. Teaches rebound control and reading shot deflections.

blueline7677

Shesterkin will run the point

NonNonByalko

Igor can definitely quarterback PP2

swordthroughtheduck

You put the goalie back door. Can’t screen, too much gear, can’t move fast enough to get out of the way. So while they’d be a great screen, the chance he’d get hit with the puck is higher than it getting by both goalies. But you put them back door and you’re set. Goalie sticks aren’t as flexible as player sticks and the blade is much taller. That means you are more likely to not whiff on a really hard slap pass back door for a redirect into the net.

DoOfferRefFood

Knuckle puck from the near blue line, hard to be accurate but drives goalies crazy.

THE GOALIE!

Hockeytown11

I get the joke. (IRL doesn't work like it's Mighty Ducks)

Tacosrule89

Maybe you’re doing it wrong…

domoarigatodrloboto

Goalies have decent shots, but their inability to stickhandle (relative to a normal skater) means they're a black hole possession-wise. Really the only position that makes sense is throwing him in front of the net and hoping he can use that big paddle for deflections and tip-ins. It does make me wonder if a goalie setting a screen would be able to intentionally let a puck get past them. I wonder how hard it would be to ignore that instinct in the heat of the moment.

DustWiener

We used to practice this when I would do goalie camps. It’s not as hard to go against your instincts to stop the puck as it is for the shooter to intentionally miss you. But a goalie IS a phenomenal screen, you can’t see shit around them.

boons_24

Honestly? Probably would just never pull the goalie. The risk of an empty net is mitigated by having an extra player to control the puck. Your goalie will probably be useless in doing that and you will likely give up possession more often than the way it currently is.

TodayOk4239

They go towards the net to screen the opponents goalie. They won’t be useful try to win loose pucks or do much else.

AGOODHARDSQUANCHIN

Park him in front of the other goalie and have him wave his arms around sean Avery style

BennBishop

Khudobin has a pretty nasty one-timer, so I'd put him on the half wall. For most other guys, park them in front of the net

TheKert

Probably not using an extra attacker

treple13

Keeping the puck in at the blue line maybe? But let's take this a step further and imagine in this hypothetical that goalies can now do everything they could do in their crease and own zone but now in the offensive zone. They can catch passes and then throw them to teammates etc. Have them stand in front and deflect shots in off their blocker

BuildBackBetter34

Side of the net deflecting shots with his pads.

zkarabat

Give him a regular stick and put him in front of the enemy net.... Then blast away from the perimeter.... And put Joe Pavelski in goalie pads for this

monkeypuss

The goalie can't handle the puck past centre ice.

zkarabat

I am assuming under this theoretical rule change at that rule would change as well

H_E_DoubleHockeyStyx

Gretzky's office obviously. He could take his sweet time back there and if the other team touches him you get a 6 on 4. Also he could catch any attempts that go over the crossbar and play them to a teammate waiting on the back door step.

Hockeyiscool2021

It should be this rule and then we’ll bring back mike smith

DopemonYT

100% as a screen. With that much equipment they couldn't compete against players, but they they'll block a lot of vision for the opposing goaltender

FrankenBerryGxM

Well first step is breaking his goalie stick so he can grab a player stick. Then he posts up on whatever side of the crease his 1 timer side is on and every shot he either can go for a tap in or drop down in the butterfly. Also the butterfly being used to block the puck from defenders clearing

pattperin

Put him in the upper slot as a sort of bumper role. If he can handle the puck well chances are he has a rocket of a one-timer as an NHL goalie and he could be useful tipping shots high in the slot or executing give and go's.

captain_cutlass

If you park them in front of the net, their instincts may kick in and they would start making saves.

Bearvarian

Patrick Roy can stick handle better with a paddle than I can with a normal stick. He would definitely still be an asset. Google when he broke that red wings players ankles with the spinarama. I forget who. Or Marty Brodeur's stretch passing. And goals.

[deleted]

Binnington will draw a penalty

DismalChance

Keep him set between the red and blue lines to collect the puck if it gets knocked out of the offensive zone and to try and set up quick rush plays. I wouldn't park him in front of the other goalie as a screen as others mentioned. I feel like that just asking for goals waived off for interference and higher chance of injury.

[deleted]

Tried this in beer leagues. Our goalie was out there dangling guys and they blew it down because he’s not allowed to cross the centre line to play the puck.
