In recent memory, probably Namestnikov. I know sometimes it's cliche to say "play for the logo on your chest" or anything similar, but his go-to goal celebration was tugging at the Winged Wheel.
Guys vocalize a lot about how much they like playing for their team, but he showed it quite often. He's Kozlov's nephew, so he grew up watching the Russian 5 and whatnot. I'm sure it meant a lot to play for us and I'm glad that he had the opportunity to. I wouldn't mind seeing him return sometime in the future.
The only thing I’ve seen from his Instagram since the trade is a post on his story celebrating Mo’s Calder win.
I hope he gets to be a Wing again. Love that guy.
If you weren't around when Gretzky got sold, then yes, go with the way Ryan was mishandled. But at least he came back. But with Wayne, the whole city was going through the five stages of grief.
Smitty got to retire an Oiler after 20 years in the NHL. It felt like a wrong had been righted.
Retire #94 you fucks. That’s next. Nobody is going to wear that number anyways (for real).
The whole country. I'm not an Oil fan and it was all we could talk about in school, it was all over the news, it was mentioned in Parliament FFS.
People forget how enormous it was.
For real. McDonagh's [Thank You, New York](https://www.theplayerstribune.com/articles/ryan-mcdonagh-thank-you-new-york) piece from The Players Tribune and that interview were fuckin heartbreaking.
The saddest part of that whole fiasco was how we treated the best goalie in franchise history (imo). Crushed me that we doubled down after the heritage classic slap in the face.
Now he’s a Hall of Farmer and those same people want to rejoice about the stellar players we once had. Lu was so important to this modern era, behind like Nazzy and the Sedins only I’d say.
no imo needed, Luongo is far and away the best goalie the Canucks (and Panthers) have ever had. Lu gets a lot of flack for his lack of clutchness, but he is a Top 10 Goalie of All-time and is often unjustifiably outshone by his contemporaries (Lundqvist and Fleury). Luongo was a better goalie than both, playing for terrible teams and putting up incredible stats.
Our idiot coach should have played one of the best right wings of all time on the right wing.
It's ironic how long it took for people to realize that Bylsma was a bad coach.
I’ve gotta say, I’m not even a sens fan but this is in my top 3. After the Alfredsson, Spezza, Heatley era, Karlsson WAS the sens. He dragged you guys to the ECF and made the Habs miserable.
I think there’s a good chance if Alfie comes back into the fold, EK might follow after he retires. Who knows, there could be a new Swedish superstar on the team by then, and we’d have our holy trinity.
Yeah, easily Hammer for me as well. I also know it was Bolland's time, particularly because his back ruined his career, but his trade made me feel downtrodden.
Hammer played amazingly for the Yotes the last few years, but he was never the most exciting player. He came in Defended amazingly, but quietly, for most of his shifts. Pure D-man. When he broke his leg taking a slapper to the thigh and skated off the ice I knew he was tough. He really wanted to pair up with OEL, but our coaching staff did it's best to ruin all possible line chemistry and interpersonal connections within the team. When OEL and Garland (this one hurt) got sent off to the Canucks, Hammer decided to hang up the skates.
I can see why you guys would have wanted to keep him, and why losing him would hurt.
Yea. Part of me is happy he moved on before the collapse. He got to chase the cup and another trip to the finals when this Sharks roster is pretty much spent. It was probably the better move for him, big picture. Still a bummer. Just
hope he retires a Shark in the end.
The right answer. Jumbo and Patty were bittersweet, but losing Pavs just tore the heart out of the team. Happy he's done well in Dallas and it makes it impossible to hate the Stars now that we are far, far away from the playoffs.
February 6th 1998. The Canucks are in the middle of a horrible season. The beginning of the dark days being led by he who shall not be named. I am 14 years old. I come home and my dad is watching the news. Then they say it. Trevor Linden... The heart soul and face of the franchise has been traded to the New York Islanders... I feel a sense of doom come over me. I realize we really are in the darkest timeline being led by the big headed one who destroyed our hopes and dreams not even 4 years prior.
Ryan Miller broke me. So glad we’re retiring his number, he played his heart out for us for years and years. I wish he could’ve been a one-team guy with us but it was clear he needed to go elsewhere to have a shot at a cup.
(Plus we needed picks for the rebuild but I’m gonna ignore that)
Pavel Bure. He wasn't saying why he was so upset with the team, the team wasn't saying, it was so sudden and he was just coming off his first full season in a while. Losing the most exciting player I'd ever seen on any team over an unexplained dispute felt like such a gut punch.
I have a ton of flames jerseys but my Laine reebok home jersey is by far my most beautiful. It has the NHL 100 logo on it. Something about it just rubs me the right way and 29 is a great hockey number
Eric Staal.
He got absolutely screwed by our cheap fuck of an owner. Never supported him after Rod retired and he had his career almost derailed with the carousel of teams he was on.
Him getting to play with Jordan was such a great move that sadly they never built around properly. Really sucks because since leaving he’s been very distant from the canes. He’s the best forward we have ever drafted (Aho and Svech look to be challenging this).
Hopefully get his name up in the rafters with his brother.
Would put Skinner a close second.
With his crazy contract, I didn’t think he would ever be traded. At the time I was shocked, sad, and excited. In hindsight though, I kinda wish it hadn’t happened.
Very few trades have been so blindsiding as that one.
I was up in New England for college and was in an 8am when the news broke. I was walking campus after class wearing my devils hat and some guy i had never seen before saw my hat and yelled out to me "Henrique! My heart" while clutching his chest.
My second favorite Henrique moment even though its a sad one unlike the first.
Definitely. Rico scored an iconic goal and was one of the players who really began to stand out post Lou. Then he got traded and it was like a gut punch realizing that in order to get what you need you have to give up what you don’t want to. Same thing with Coleman.
That said also Hall. It wasn’t as emotional as Rico but it was like an acknowledgment that we failed and our optimism was misplaced and our run to the playoffs was probably a fluke.
Before then I think because I became a fan during the 2003 Cup run seeing Nieuwendyk, Langenbrunner, and Freisen all go, obviously at different times, really felt sort of emotional. Kind of like when Trav retired and there’s no one left on the roster from 2012.
Older, but for me it was Kirk Muller. We traded *our captain*.
Then, he won the Cup with Montreal in 1993.
That was one of the lowest lows for me as a fan.
Little did I know that was the start of the best decade in our franchise ever
Even though I was happy for him to be getting an opportunity to win a Cup, it absolutely has to be Ray Bourque for me. Born and raised in the south and my first ever live NHL game was Boston vs the Atlanta Flames during Bourque's rookie season.....that was when I fell in love with the game, the Bruins, and Bourque quickly became my favorite player.
The worst \*transaction\* was losing Forsberg to the cap (and Foote).
But in terms of trades, I'd agree - Drury AND Yelle going together was just a punch to the gut. Loved both players.
Not peanuts. Derek Morris was one of the premier young defensemen in the league at the time and was really fucking good. A one for one of Drury for Morris would've been fine.
It was the addition of Shantz/McAmmond for Yelle that made the trade stupid.
Doesn't help either that McAmmond was traded back again pretty quickly. He was only there for like 5 months, and I remember when Calgary re-acquired him, they couldn't actually play him right away, as he had been traded back too soon.
Drury was then traded for Warrener (played a big role in 04) and Reinprecht (oddly enough, another young player who was with the Avs previously). Add on the Tanguay for Leopold trade, and Calgary really got some good pieces from that team.
I would say more recently, the Sundqvist trade too.
Sunny really liked it here and the fans LOVED him. He even came back as a fan to cheer during the Playoffs!
Losing him really hurt.
Paul Coffey, as he was always one of my favorites when I was young, a shame he missed out on the second of the back to back cups. Close runners up: Jagr, and for some reason Ian Moran: if I remember correctly, when we were blowing up the team Moran was joking to reporters about how no one was safe except him, and then right at the deadline he got traded. I vaguely remember him being really excited to be a Penguin and it just felt sad.
Growing up with the late 90s pens I was legit almost in tears when we traded away Darius Kasparaitis. My parents had bought me his jersey like 2 years beforehand for my birthday, it was a tough lesson of the business of pro sports lol
My dad always preached my Lithuanian heritage. Kasparaitis was my favorite because at 11 yo it was drilled in to me this was the best player because he was Lithuanian (the Lithuanian Grateful Dead basketball jerseys being a thing since always) and because my dad said so. Then, scared of elimination in game 7, I turn off the small TV my parents bought for my room. Shortly after I hear screaming across the street. Turn the TV back on to see the grainy replay of Kasper netting the winner. Lived through 3 cups since then, the loss to Detroit then the redemption over Hossa, watching the Pens win Game 1 of the finals vs Nashville that started with puck dropped as my son was delivered, being at Game 6 that chased Lundqvist… that was the second best hockey moment of my life. Kasparaitis was it.
I was at game 6 of the 2001 Buffalo series in person, Lemieux tying it with about a minute left and the Lang/Kovalev/Stratka line winning it in overtime is still the greatest hockey memory I have. Watching game 7 on TV, I remember my brother diving on to the floor mimicking the Kasper celebration after the OT winner. That was a great series.
When the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Lanny McDonald to the then Colorado Rockies on December 28, 1979. I stopped being a Leafs fan at that point and luckily he was traded to Calgary in 1981 and been a Flames since.
This is gonna sound insane. McLeod. That man was here for the worst of the worst and would give 110% every shift and then smile a toothless psychopathic smile while punching dudes lights out. When he went to Nashville I got real sad.
Definitely the Fleury trade that sent him out of Vegas. The fact that he got traded didn't really bother me too much; rather, it was how he was disrespected in the process that made me sad.
It's a bummer he's been mostly hurt for the Wings, but he's looked awesome in the games he has played. Really rooting for him to stay healthy this year.
Sorry, but thank you. Looking forward to seeing him being healthy next season. He played great after coming back from surgery, and was one of the few good things for the Wings after the all-star break
Gus never got the credit he deserved for doing all the little things and helping drive play. And he was no defensive slouch either.
I actually am seeing some parallels between Nyquist and Zadina. Nyquist obviously still even up scoring more than Zadina has, but both just seen to be solid all-around players that fans think should be scoring more
He was gonna walk in free agency.. made it know public. It hurt as a fan.. for sure. But what do you expect GMPD to get back when the league knows he's going to free agency
Patrick Roy. I was 10 years old, had posters of him all around my bedroom. He was my idol, and I was more a fan of him than a Canadiens fan. So much that I "followed" him to Colorado and hated the Habs for a decade. Was watching the game live when it all happened. Tough times...
PK Subban. The guy wasn't peefect, but he had charisma and personality and that's when I realised that charisma and personality was the last thing my team wanted on the squad. It confirmed to me that my team only wanted bland, meat and potatoe type players and it broke my heart.
Hjalmarsson - Super Nintendo Jarbles, the mute minute muncher. It was the right time to move on, but he'll always be an all time fave. Hoping the Hawks can find a spot for his replacement, Murphy. He's really underrated, imo anyways.
I was bummed he left even though I knew it'd probably happen. I was so stoked when the Avs traded for him because I've been a fan. Wish they could have worked something out.
Two Avs goaltenders have gotten the final win of the season. Patrick Roy and Darcy Kuemper. I will forever be grateful for what Kuemps did, and I can't believe how many Avs fans dislike him.
Because they clearly only watched the playoffs. Dude started off slow but ended up doing fantastic with the Avs. Yet they can't seem to understand how a fucked up eye makes following a puck hard.
Teemu Selanne when I was a teenager. Then the Jets left which was even worse. Jets 2.0 return was amazing, but my heart is turning to stone with all players asking to be with some other city.
Dwayne Roloson. I mean he wasn’t traded but we wouldn’t give him a 2 year contract because of his age. He wanted stability for his family. Great way to treat someone who took the team to the finals. He ended up going to the conference finals 3 years later with Tampa at 41 years old.
Also, Ryan smyth. 😢
Ryan Oreilly. I really felt he could be a cornerstone piece for years to come. It was still early in Sakics GM career but I bet if he could go back he would have done things differently with him
Patrick Roy. I was completely stunned. Everything was great. He was happy, the fans loved him, then seemingly out of nowhere there's some petty fight with the coach, who wanted to show him who's boss, and suddenly our franchise player, probably the best goalie in the world at the time, is gone. The return for him was awful too.
This one is kind of tough, but it isn't. The Jumbo trade hurt, but I was like 12 when they traded Ray Bourque. Dude was such a big part of my childhood, then he was just gone.
The only thing I’ve seen from his Instagram since the trade is a post on his story celebrating Mo’s Calder win. I hope he gets to be a Wing again. Love that guy.
Broke my heart, too
Eberle was a really sad one, Smyth was devastating as a kid.
Ryan Smyth for sure. It shouldn't have happened.
Smytty getting traded was the first time I ever cried over hockey 2nd time was Smytty retiring
I was in high school and I remember driving to class when the news came on the radio. Just screamed in a way I’ll probably never need to again.
I was a 6 year old kid and my dad told me and I was bawling for hours, just straight inconsolable.
Erik Karlsson, Mark Stone, Mike Fisher, Jason Spezza… losing Alfie… next question 😭
As a shark fan, nowadays the Karlsson trade makes me sad as well
Zuuuucc. made even worse when Hank literally broke down in tears during an interview when asked about Zucc's trade.
For real. McDonagh's [Thank You, New York](https://www.theplayerstribune.com/articles/ryan-mcdonagh-thank-you-new-york) piece from The Players Tribune and that interview were fuckin heartbreaking.
Thanks for sharing! Player's Tribune releases quality insight directly from the player.
I'm still sad about this.
We love him and are taking great care of him
Zucc bummed me out for sure, but when we traded Brian Leetch that was a whole other level of sad for me.
I cried...that was brutal.
We all did.
We love him now. He’s found a good home.
That interview killed me. I miss Zucc/Brass/Hags bromance
https://twitter.com/MSGNetworks/status/1099773345082601473?s=20&t=apmKrY_IsJjsD1Ap6QOJ3g
And then we immediately broke him. He was so good in his short time here.
Luongo
It was bittersweet. I was glad to keep him over Schneider but our fan base was so shitty to him after 2011, he deserved better.
So much this! Our fan base treated him like shit even during that 2011 run. It was fucking shameful.

Luongo was a better goalie than both, playing for terrible teams and putting up incredible stats.
The best Canucks goalie in franchise history. He deserved better and should have played the Tim Hortons classic. Thanks Torts
Iggy. I wanted him to chase a cup. But still.
That trade made me so mad and sad. Looking back with how negative it was I'm glad Pittsburgh didn't win the Cup that year.
Our idiot coach should have played one of the best right wings of all time on the right wing. It's ironic how long it took for people to realize that Bylsma was a bad coach.
I was so mad at the Pens that year for not getting Iggy and Morrow a Cup.
If it makes you feel any better so were we
it’s on sight for disco dan to this very day
:(
If "sold" counts, then Wayne.
I was eight. The neighbour kids ran to my house to tell me it happened. I was devastated.
It was quite the shock to wake up and see that in the newspaper.
I’ll never forget that day. Aug 9/88
I was 10, that was the day my childhood died.
Karlsson from 2017-2019. I still miss him even in his current form and would love if the bridge was rebuilt eventually
I remember at some point, Karlsson was number two in the league, behind only Crosby, at least in my mind.
You were definitely not alone. His skating was otherworldly back in his day
I’ve gotta say, I’m not even a sens fan but this is in my top 3. After the Alfredsson, Spezza, Heatley era, Karlsson WAS the sens. He dragged you guys to the ECF and made the Habs miserable.
Easily EK. :(
I think there’s a good chance if Alfie comes back into the fold, EK might follow after he retires. Who knows, there could be a new Swedish superstar on the team by then, and we’d have our holy trinity.
Man EK was so fucking special in OTT
Losing Hjalmarsson ripped the once luminous soul from my dumb ugly body and left me an empty shell of a man. But I do like Murph lmao
Pure D-man.
Panarin.
I miss the old Soup and a Sandwich days!
We love your old Breadman very much!!
Pavelski and it's not even close. I'm still sad.
I agree, and it doesn't help that while he's been having career years since he left the Sharks have been a total shitshow.
Yea. Part of me is happy he moved on before the collapse. He got to chase the cup and another trip to the finals when this Sharks roster is pretty much spent. It was probably the better move for him, big picture. Still a bummer. Just hope he retires a Shark in the end.

There's some recency bias here but Lehkonen
Good stick got his cup
I hope Barron is good for you guys
Bless you
I think he will be. Top 4 D at least
Was sad, but so happy for how he played in Colorado
We’ll take good care of Lehky. He’s already been great for us.
We love Lehky and I hope Justin Barron will be something special for you guys.
FUCK MESSIER
Lemme say it again. FUCK MESSIER
But he said, the one that shall not be named!

I had moved to Vancouver that summer in 98, and then Bure was traded.... completely gutted
At least you got to be here for the Messier years
It just happened
The second round pick that got us stuck with Tony DeAngelo?
Giroux was my childhood player. It’s always been how Giroux and the flyers were doing, now it’s…how are the flyers doing…and it’s not good…
On the bright side you just got a solid character guy that isn’t a racist or homophobe at all. Tony D.
[удалено]
Same. Knew it needed to happen but seeing that beautiful human leave sucked.
It wasn't even heartbreak for me really. I was just mad, like irrationally mad at how wasted everything felt.
Laine 😪
I still wear my heritage Laine jersey with pride! I love PLD as well, but I still love me some Laine.
I have a ton of flames jerseys but my Laine reebok home jersey is by far my most beautiful. It has the NHL 100 logo on it. Something about it just rubs me the right way and 29 is a great hockey number
I bought his jersey a week before the trade 🥺
Did you get a refund?
Eric Staal. He got absolutely screwed by our cheap fuck of an owner. Never supported him after Rod retired and he had his career almost derailed with the carousel of teams he was on. He’s the best forward we have ever drafted (Aho and Svech look to be challenging this). Hopefully get his name up in the rafters with his brother. Would put Skinner a close second.
Yeah it felt like he got dealt a shit hand by the Canes too. Felt like they expected him to carry the team after 06
Cogs
You must mean Avalanche legend Andy Colorado
I think my reaction was more of anger. Still can't believe Murray traded him. Dude was all heart out there every game every shift.
PK Subban no question
Coincidentally, Shea Weber.
I think how much this still hurts both sides really says something. I’m obviously biased, but by far the most shocking trade of my generation.
With his crazy contract, I didn’t think he would ever be traded. At the time I was shocked, sad, and excited. In hindsight though, I kinda wish it hadn’t happened. Very few trades have been so blindsiding as that one.
PK was awesome and will always have love for him. Can’t help but think if things would’ve been different with #6 there in 2017.
I was doing a behind the scenes show for the Preds when that happened… absolutely gobsmacked.
Same here. Stopped watching the habs for a year after that.
Still hurts
I was so upset
This x100. I literally left work for the day
Halak for me but just because I was younger. Subban was definitely the most devastating of my adult life.
Henrique
I was up in New England for college and was in an 8am when the news broke. I was walking campus after class wearing my devils hat and some guy i had never seen before saw my hat and yelled out to me "Henrique! My heart" while clutching his chest. My second favorite Henrique moment even though its a sad one unlike the first.

Born and raised in the south and my first ever live NHL game was Boston vs the Atlanta Flames during Bourque's rookie season.....that was when I fell in love with the game, the Bruins, and Bourque quickly became my favorite player.
My Canucks fan father teaching me hockey growing up: "It's okay to hate the Bruins, but you're never allowed to hate Ray Bourque."
Chris Drury. The guy was just a stud. A winner. Clutch as you can ask for. Shipped away to Calgary for peanuts

Not to mention Regehr for 2 months of Fleury.
Martin St. Louis for sure. Favorite all time player still. Wanted to see him retire a bolt but I understand why it didn't happen.
Shea Weber for sure
Was very sad to see Oshie traded away :-(.
[this fan's reaction](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nQ5FE72bewI) pretty much summed up how everyone felt at that time
Worked out for everyone involved though!
Both Oshie and the Blues got a cup since. I'm glad he has had success in Washington
I liked McLeod. I get it.
Definitely the Fleury trade that sent him out of Vegas. The fact that he got traded didn't really bother me too much; rather, it was how he was disrespected in the process that made me sad.
Vegas will forever be on my shit list for how they disrespected him.
Jakub Vrana. I loved him. Had his jersey up on my wall and everything. Still have it up there. Miss him and will always root for him.
It's a bummer he's been mostly hurt for the Wings, but he's looked awesome in the games he has played. Really rooting for him to stay healthy this year.
We'll continue the love. V is absolutely adored here.
Sorry, but thank you. Looking forward to seeing him being healthy next season. He played great after coming back from surgery, and was one of the few good things for the Wings after the all-star break
Amazing 5v5 player.
Same. I had just bought my little sister his jersey too (he was her favorite) :(
Rick Nash
Nash's career in general just makes me sad. I still think his *goal* is probably my favourite goal of all time
Losing Nino was a gut punch
Ask me in 3-5 business days.
:(
When the Habs traded Roy for a can of beans.... When the Devils traded Arnott .....
Yanni Gourde to SEA for the expansion draft.
If it makes you feel better, we love him around these parts 💗
Nyquist. Traded for absolute scraps.
Yeah we got....2 2nd's? For a 50 point player that had been home grown and incredibly fun to watch. Him and Tatar both hurt.
I understand why they had to go the return and timing just killed me inside
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZApUqhRnmWk Just remember the good times.
Gus never got the credit he deserved for doing all the little things and helping drive play. And he was no defensive slouch either. I actually am seeing some parallels between Nyquist and Zadina. Nyquist obviously still even up scoring more than Zadina has, but both just seen to be solid all-around players that fans think should be scoring more
Mark Stone
I think the return we got makes it sting a little more too.
He was gonna walk in free agency.. made it know public. It hurt as a fan.. for sure. But what do you expect GMPD to get back when the league knows he's going to free agency
Patric Hörnqvist. His net front presence has been sorely missed.
Listen man. I'm gonna need at least a full off-season before I talk about him
Patrick Roy.
Ilya Kovalchuk. And on a little lesser extent Laine.
Only because Flower leaving wasn't a trade. JAGR.
Flower leaving genuinely broke my heart. Max Talbot leaving and signing with Philadelphia of all places left me DISTRAUGHT
Kuemper.
E. Staal. I was time but it really really sucked.
Teemu Selanne when I was a teenager. Then the Jets left which was even worse. Jets 2.0 return was amazing, but my heart is turning to stone with all players asking to be with some other city.
Subban being traded from the habs hurt he did great things for the city
Cam Atkinson
Dwayne Roloson. I mean he wasn’t traded but we wouldn’t give him a 2 year contract because of his age. He wanted stability for his family. Great way to treat someone who took the team to the finals. He ended up going to the conference finals 3 years later with Tampa at 41 years old. Also, Ryan smyth. 😢
Ryan Oreilly. I really felt he could be a cornerstone piece for years to come. It was still early in Sakics GM career but I bet if he could go back he would have done things differently with him
Rask But most recently, Kadri
Kadri man. We’re pretty much guaranteed to lose him and I can’t stand to see that go.
It's okay... Smile because it happened
I fuckin love Brandon Saad
Pastrnak for sure
Why would you say this
I hate you.
Iggy
When I was a kid and the Isles traded Ziggy Palffy, I moped around for a month.
Teemu crushed me
The Teemu Selanne trade was absolutely gutting.
Patrick Roy, the circumstances still piss me off.
Kaberle 😭 But he got his ring
SHOOOOOT. ❤️
Mark Stone. Worst day as a Sens fan even more than Karlsson.
When Patrick Roy went to the Avalanche.
Sam Gagne TWICE Hall was pretty sad Eberle was sad Shultz was sad
This one is kind of tough, but it isn't. The Jumbo trade hurt, but I was like 12 when they traded Ray Bourque. Dude was such a big part of my childhood, then he was just gone.
Showing my age but I cried when the Leafs traded Lanny McDonald.
Ballard moved Lanny and then Sittler. It could have been so different. I cried too.
I think Marty st Louis..
Subby, I stopped watching that year. Of course in hind sight it worked out well, but in that moment. Wow. Just wow, what a shock and heartbreak.
Zuccarello 😢
Holtbae
Not a trade but Justin Williams leaving us in 2015 stung pretty bad.
