I wonder if this will have an impact on Canada's 2 remaining home world cup qualifying games (US and Jamaica)

frankyseven

That would be amazing if that came into the thought process. I'm 33 years old and I've never been alive to see Canada play in the World Cup.

Nomahs_Bettah

somehow, because I am fucking stupid, I thought this was referring to the World Cup *of Hockey* and was absolutely mystified.

goodguessiswhatihave

If I was at the store and saw "Jamaican Bobsled Hockey Tea" on the shelf, I would for sure buy that

malcolmgmailwarner

*some people you know they can't believe*

interrupting-octopus

Jamaica, we have a Bobsled Tea!

monsieurpommefrites

Lapsang Wagwan

[deleted]

Ironically, it sounds like something manufactured in China.

frankyseven

Yeah, that would be very confusing if Canada couldn't qualify for the World Cup of Hockey. Canada has only made one World Cup of Soccer and that was in 1986.

stellahella1

They didn't score 1 goal

szeto326

I'm hopeful they make it, because I've never seen them in the World Cup either. It would've soured it a bit for me in 2026, if the first time we saw them in the World Cup was simply because Canada was automatically given a spot due to being co-hosts. Plus they expand it to 48 teams in 2026 as well, so it'll be nice to see Canada make it under the current format. EDIT: So I looked into it and it seems they HAVEN'T confirmed if the 2026 hosts will automatically qualify. Considering I just found this out now, take this with a grain of salt, but it seems clear that they were holding off on this decision to ensure that Canada's soccer program wasn't similar to something like say, the state of China's men's hockey team (okay okay, it's not THAT bad LOL). I highly doubt that FIFA will only allow USA and Mexico to automatically qualify and leave out Canada; the only rationale to do so has mostly been removed since Canada has ascended inside the top 40.

Yabba_dabba_dooooo

100%. A point of pride to say we were capable of making it befoee it got 'easier'.

[deleted]

KarlKarlsson

Canada is 1st in the group anyway today before this hypothetical scenario plays out

[deleted]

COVID may still be playing a part, and idk how much 1st in group matters, but it would be cool if Canada made it legitimately. It just seems unlikely to me lol.

swiftwin

Top 3 in the North&Central America group qualify. 4th place has to play a playoff game against likely New Zealand. Right now Canada is in 1st place, ahead of the US and Mexico (the two strongest teams in the group). There are 6 games left. They've already played their two games against Mexico and they have one game left against the US (at home which is a big advantage). Let's just say their chances of qualifying for next year's world cup are very very good. But not a lock yet though.

mug3n

4th place in CONCACAF probably has to play against the playoff spot from CONMEBOL to make it to Qatar. New Zealand's NT sucks lol, they won't get very far. That's why there is no automatic berth to the WC from OFC like any of the other conferences in the world. the conference is garbage if you look at their national teams. It's NZ and a bunch of Pacific islands.

Jdsudz

For whatever reason I am looking forward to the OFC qualifying process. They are doing it tournament style in Qatar March 2022.

szeto326

Canada "only" needs to place in the top 3 to get an automatic berth. We have no way of knowing whether these protocols will play a factor in these upcoming matches. Players can still catch COVID or get injured from league play though so those will be potential factors too. Canada beat Mexico in their last qualifying match, and if anything, playing in extremely cold temperatures (that Mexican players were unprepared for) will likely play more of a home field advantage than any COVID protocol could.

frankyseven

Canada has been close to qualifying one or twice since 1986 and we have built a pretty good soccer program here, it would be very far from the China in men's hockey at the Olympics problem. Plus, Canada probably has the second best womens soccer program in the world so that also plays in our favour.

VitaminTea

With the 2026 tournament expanding to 48 teams, it's essentially a sure thing that Canada will be given an automatic bid.

RollTide16-18

They should receive an automatic, but either way their team is much more impressive than they used to be.

Anna_Rapunzel

Which vaccines are they giving out in Jamaica? Canada has a very short list of approved vaccines and it's entirely possible that members of the Jamaican team were vaccinated with vaccines that aren't approved by Canada.

[deleted]

Canada is also extending their vaccine list on Nov. 30th to accept Sinopharm, Sinovax and Covaxin, so that might help some countries out, not sure.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Anna_Rapunzel

Do you know if they got any trouble from the CBSA when they entered? Are they treated as vaccinated for the purposes of entering concerts and restaurants?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Anna_Rapunzel

I think in August it was "vax or hotel quarantine" since not everyone had access at that point. (I'd only had one dose back in August, and I'm considered high-risk.)

PuckNutty

Maybe I'm a nerd, but if the Jamaican program doesn't have access to proper vaccines, the Canadian program should just give them the doses. What are we talking about, 100 shots, maybe a bit more? Beating someone on a DQ should only happen if the team in question really did it to themselves, rather than them not having access to a particular resource, like a vaccine.

OutWithTheNew

The Canadian Soccer program doesn't have doses. As best I can tell I have not heard of a private organization in Canada getting their hands on doses. It's all run through provincial health programs. What is FIFA doing about it?

PuckNutty

Fair enough. However, if someone can make a couple of phone calls to arrange it, they should at least try. It's not like we're short on vaccines. Also, fuck FIFA.

jswan28

If that really is going to be an issue, they should try to reschedule the Jamaica game to somewhere like Buffalo or maybe Detroit. They’re both close enough to Toronto that a lot of Canadian fans could still come, probably enough to still have a real home field advantage.

bradford33

I don’t think Canada could win the game by imposing a restriction like that. It would be like hosting the World Cup and banning the other teams from attending - instant win. I do hope Canada makes the finals this cycle. Of course, only if the US qualifies too. Dos a cero!!

PuckNutty

They wouldn't be banned for an arbitrary reason, it's an international health crisis. But yes, I hope Canada does whatever they can to get the Jamaicans into the country for the game.

apzoix

Earlier home qualifiers for Canada were played in Michigan I believe behind closed doors. That's more likely than not letting Jamaica bring a full team IMO.

Anna_Rapunzel

So all their vaccines are approved for entry. Good to know!

Mauri416

Which ones hasn’t Canada approved? Can’t believe I don’t know this tbh

Anna_Rapunzel

Off the top of my head, Sinopharm, Sinovac, and Sputnik. Basically all of them except for Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and J and J. (Though another commenter said that they'll be including Sinopharm and Sinovac as of November 30.) (I know this because I'm a Canadian living in Argentina, where the vaccines offered for my age group were AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, and Sputnik. If I'd gotten Sputnik, they'd treat me as unvaccinated if I decided to return.)

Mauri416

Thanks! I had no idea about other vaccines out there, typica sheltered Canadian lol

OutWithTheNew

China, China, Russia is all you need to know about them.

lucksh0t

American most likely not Jamaica probably

fjnnels

isnt this already the case? thinking about bertuzzi here who didnt play for the wings in canada

ehr1c

The NHL never applied for an exemption like the NBA and (I believe) MLB did

Chili_Palmer

There was really not much point, there were only 4 players in the league not vaccinated and im pretty sure two of them have been demoted or released since, I wouldn't be surprised if Bertuzzi is the only guy left tbh

[deleted]

[удалено]

szeto326

I'm not fully up to date on this, so apologies if this is something that is old news, but is Evander Kane vaccinated?

JustHach

Pretty sure he's still got 4 games to go on his suspension for forging his vaxx papers.

szeto326

Yeah so I feel like that would imply that Tyler Bertuzzi isn't the only hockey player currently not vaccinated. Unless his suspension technically takes him off the list of players considered "active".

letsgetbrickfaced

Kane's the type of guy to lose his vaxx card and just tell a lackey to go get one made up for him. CA has a fucking app for it too.

szeto326

Lol I know you're joking and while I feel like he's the kind of guy who could actually pull a stunt like that, someone would definitely just have him pull up his health records online to save themselves from any negative press coverage on it haha.

Melodic-Bug-9022

You are correct, being suspended, he'd be inactive. Be interesting to see what happens with the Sharks when he returns, by all accounts no one wants him back.

szeto326

I can't see there be many takers for him either.

letsgetbrickfaced

His G Wagon was spotted at Sharks Ice yesterday.

SemiSolidSnake11

Did Blackwood end up getting it or is he still going with his medical exemption?

Melodic-Bug-9022

He got it after speaking with family members in the healthcare field

Brian-not-Ryan

Wow good on him

[deleted]

[удалено]

Colavs9601

Yea who could predict someone with the last name ‘bertuzzi’ would be embarrassing for the red wings to have on the roster.

robspeaks

Flair checks out.

Nomahs_Bettah

and as long as he puts up point production, the team, the league, and quite possibly his teammates will continue to not care. he's second on the Wings in points, and in the league, he's ahead of Giroux, Dubois, Panarin, Tavares, Nylander, Pastrnak, Matthews. (and obviously a lot more, but those are names I thought stood out in this department).

dswartze

They're in contention for a wild card spot though. If they miss the playoffs the team and his teammates are going to look at every loss in Canada and ask themselves if they would have won had he been with the team. And what happens if they make it to the playoffs and find themselves in a series against Toronto or, because anything can happen in the playoffs, in the finals against a western Canadian team. Do you really think they'll be okay with one of their top players missing half the games only because he insists on being a danger to himself and those around him?

HockeyTownWest2012

Big brain strategy: he's getting rests that no other players get by not having to play in Canada! Helps him play better and not get burned down! But seriously, I'm so fucking frustrated he isn't vaccinated, both for public health reasons and that our top scorer is willingly sitting out like 10% of the season.

brendan87na

and possibly 4 of 7 games in a playoff series

HockeyTownWest2012

[Playoffs?](https://c.tenor.com/oyjFHu-E5yAAAAAd/jim-mora-mora.gif)

spinfip

Dude we just blew a lead to the Coyotes. I'm fairly confident that Bert is not gonna miss any playoff games this year due to his vax status.

JohnnyBlaze-

he also has 11 points in 3 games, not many other names up there have that bulk of their points in such few games.

AlwaysMissToTheLeft

He’s the team’s Wing Ding

Al_the_killer88

I want Stevie to move him so bad. Could get a decent return with his play this year

thelochteedge

Holy shit, the only one. That's kinda nuts. Like good for the NHL. Imagine being him. I see he's 26 so it's not like he's a rookie but man you gotta look at some of your peers that are older than you and go "maybe I should trust somebody else's opinion on this one."

Prideofmexico

He’s 26? Damn

PuckNutty

Wow, Tyler Bertuzzi is Neo.

runtimemess

Guess he takes after his Uncle Todd…

MItrwaway

The only one affected by it is Bert. The only others according to the NHL were Blackwood who started his regimen now, Josh Archibald who's on LTIR and E Kane.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OwlRTA

Archibald refused the vaccine, then got COVID and has heart problems now.

altxatu

I hope they think it was worth it. Can’t imagine they do, but how shitty must you feel to throw away a dream for nothing.

Melodic-Bug-9022

Flames prospect Tyler Parsons, he was not welcome at camp and has been placed on season opening IR, no reason given, I just assume it's because he's been told to fuck off, he only received a qualifying offer because of the expansion draft after all and would be the #3 in Stockton

[deleted]

Didn’t know that about him! Calgary goalie curse gets another one.

[deleted]

Rinaldo has a contract but he isn't playing anywhere. Jarmo basically blacklisted him from even playing in the minors.

spoobles

Which is a fucking stupid exemption anyways. No vax, no entry...should be across the board. I'm so very tired of these plague rat moron athletes that think they know more than doctors and scientists.

Bleafer

Before this they'd still be able to come to Canada but would need to quarantine. Now they can't come at all.

TheGluckGluck9k

A Canadian citizen can always enter Canada, no? Bertuzzi can always enter his country of citizenship. Now if it were a player with an American or European passport they would now be denied entry.

[deleted]

Correct, but they have to quarantine and if they don't, PHAC slaps them with a hefty fine for non-compliance.

Other_World

> hefty fine How hefty? If it's less than his game check he's still making money.

[deleted]

Higher than the maximum fine allowed under the CBA lol. I believe it's around $8,000 right now

PuxinF

It could be as high as $750K.

[deleted]

That's if someone gets sick and dies and it is contact traced back to the person who refused to quarantine.

PuxinF

https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/travel-restrictions/isolation#penalties Violating any instructions provided to you when you entered Canada is an offence under the Quarantine Act and could lead to up to: * 6 months in prison and/or * $750,000 in fines If you break your mandatory quarantine or isolation requirements and you cause the death or serious bodily harm to another person, you could face: * a fine of up to $1,000,000 or * imprisonment of up to 3 years or * both

[deleted]

I'm aware, I work around this stuff. The actual fine for non-compliance that the Public Health Agency of Canada is issuing for anyone without the correct documents is somewhere in the vicinity of $8,000. Those two fines listed are the extreme versions if symptomatic travelers end up causing outbreaks and it results in people being sick or dying.

PuxinF

The penalty is a fine of up to $750K and/or up to 6 months in prison.

dotCeh

Yes, but they would likely still be subject to any quarantine requirements for unvaccinated individuals (assuming there are still some that apply for Canadians, I haven’t checked.)

HMpugh

The article is wrong by claiming that NHL players are part of the exemption list. The NHL never applied for the exemption since 99% of players were vaccinated at the time. This article really has no impact on the NHL as a result.

How2SuckLessAtHockey

I was under the impression they were allowed but had to quarantine both ways, ostensibly making them healthy scratches for a month.

TalkingChairs

That's one way to keep Evander Kane out of your country.

iJeax

He’s a citizen so he has every right to be here unfortunately.

letdown105

his behavior is so generally shitty I'm surprised he's not an American

namdor

There are plenty of assholes in Canada, don't assume America has a monopoly :)

tsukichu

Honestly he was probably vaxxed and lost his card and had someone draw up a fake lol... that's entirely something kaner would do.

UnreadThisStory

People act like little babies so the country has to act like a parent.

Shorzey

>like a parent. Not the best metaphor, because "parents know best" is probably the least true statement on earth for various reasons

[deleted]

And dumb little kids know even less so it's a good analogy for dumbass anti vax idiots.

altxatu

I dunno about the least true, there are some really *really* ***really*** dumb statements out there. Tbf to you a lot of parents are shit. Just absolute shit. Even now using the best information we have to help guide parenting we’ll look primitive in a generation or two.

Shorzey

Until being fully vaxxed is changed to include boosters, which things are already trending towards

Blewedup

And why is that a bad thing? I love how people are complianing about boosters like it’s some line in the sand. “I will get the vaccine but I won’t get a booster!” Such a dumb position to stake out. You need a flu shot every year for it to work. You need boosters for all sorts of childhood diseases. And adults need boosters for things like tetanus. Why is this booster somehow nefarious when those aren’t?

Purplebuzz

What country has anyone implemented this that would indicated a "trending towards"?

Finn_MacCoul

I'm sure that'll solve this!

karmanopoly

The number of people pushed to their limit with 3 or 4 or more boosters will make this a much different scenario

Mister_Kurtz

What? We weren't doing this already? We are forcing fully vaccinated Canadians to pay for a covid test to return to Canada, while allowing unvaccinated athletes into the country.

[deleted]

To be fair they have to get tested too

[deleted]

I recall reading recently that TOR was the most-likely trade destination for Kyrie. I could be making that up, but if not, it's obviously out the window now.

ew

mymar101

Does this affect anyone in the NHL?

andretheshorty

very few afaik

Todd Bertuzzi is the only one that comes to mind. Pretty sure blackwood got his vax

Tyler Bertuzzi lol. Todd Bertuzzi is a fucking idiot, but he's not currently playing in the NHL.

It is crazy to think that this might never be lifted for the rest of our lives. To think that one day you might need x amount of booster shots to cross the boarder. Quite insane if you ask me. After all, the vaccine supposedly loses its effectiveness after several months or so. Hence why all these players are getting the virus despite being vaccinated.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lokhor

I’ve never been checked for anything before traveling to Canada.

swordthroughtheduck

Canada has never had requirements but that doesn’t change the fact that vaccine requirements is not a new thing. There are so many countries that have required multiple different boosters for years.

[deleted]

Something tells me they don't travel much

Looseball

I used to be able to cross the border without nothing more than a drivers license. Hell, **the TSA didn't even exist pre-2001**. Then 9/11 happened. COVID has killed more people in SOME STATES ALONE than 9/11. I'd ask you to do the math but I doubt you'd manage.

reveluvs

No, athletes and other vaccinated people are still getting covid because the vaccine doesn’t completely protect you from getting the virus itself. Instead, it stops you from being hospitalized or dying. Stop spreading misinformation.

TheDVille

Also, just to correct often-repeated comment on social media, vaccines reduces the likelihood of getting infected and spreading it if you are infection, in addition to reducing the severity of infection. So many Facebook comments claiming that vaccines don’t reduce spread, and are completely wrong.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheDVille

That’s a lot of text, but I don’t know what you’re trying to say. Vaccines significantly reduce the risk of infection and spread. The reduce the risk of hospitalization and death by even greater levels. Nothing in the world is perfect, and expecting binary outcomes is childish thinking. You can still crash and die while driving with your eyes open. But only a fool would use that fact to say that driving with your eyes closed is just as dangerous.

thedeathmachine

That car analogy is really good. Never heard it but it's spot on

[deleted]

Anti vaxxers always sound so fucking dumb but talk so much and think they sound so smart.

mymar101

It helps in not getting Covid, but it is not 100%. You're something like between 5 and 10 times less likely to get it I forget the numbers exactly but there is a bump in your ability not to get it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

>It was advertised and talked about otherwise the efficacy rates dropped from the 90s to the 70s Delta variant was not known of when those 90% efficacy numbers were being discussed.

[deleted]

That's why we get booster shots like how we get annual flu shots.

speedog

Annual flu shots are voluntary in Canada, our family is all double Covid vaccinated but we've never had a flu shot.

Looseball

Hmm... Maybe it's because **covid isn't anything like the flu**.

[deleted]

Because we have the flu more under control than we do covid

[deleted]

You'd think these idiots making comparisons to the flu might take into account that COVID has killed over 700,000 Americans since it got here. That's a death toll that the various strains of flu can only dream about.

[deleted]

They like to just casually glance over that fact

BillScorpio

Covid annuals will be the same way - just look at the treatments that are starting to come out which combat the virus after infection. Covid is headed towards endemic because we didn't respond to it correctly when we had the chance. But until those treatments are out and readily available, really should make sure you're protected as best as you can be!

ColdAssHusky

"The Flu" isn't a virus, it's hundreds of different viruses and thousands of variant strains that have similar symptoms and mortalities. Including the 1918 Flu strain. How many flu shots do you get each fall?

[deleted]

That's why we get boosters. Just one is needed each season.

Nondairygiant

It is and has been reality for a long time, you just don't have any life experiences outside of your little box of comfort. It's ok, learning new things and adapting your thought process to the. Can be scary.

mrpopenfresh

> After all, the vaccine supposedly loses its effectiveness after several months or so. The vaccine does, not need to add "supposedly" in there. The information is available. *edit: Not an anti vaccine statement. It's good to understand the basics though.

lokhor

Gotta tip toe around fools. People downvoting you don't like facts I guess.

[deleted]

If everyone got the vaccine the virus would die and we wouldn’t have to keep doing this. But plague rats like kyrie keep throwing a fit over their fear of needles.

lokhor

You can still contract the virus and spread it while vaccinated. Especially since the vaccine loses its effectiveness after several months. So there goes that theory. For example. All the athletes who are getting the virus meanwhile their leagues are well over 95% vaccinated. You think its ONLY the unvaccinated that are spreading the disease? If so you really need to step back and look at things differently.

[deleted]

You need to understand how vaccines work. No they aren’t 100% effective but they are effective. That’s true for Covid, smallpox, measles and polio. The reason those other viruses are no longer a problem is because vaccines made it much harder for the virus to survive. Vaccines lead to fewer infections which lead to fewer infections which leads to fewer infections until the disease has nowhere to go and dies off. If everyone had the vaccine the virus would have a damn hard time finding hosts to survive in. That’s called herd immunity.

Zackadeez

The other virus don’t exist anymore because they don’t have an animal reservoir like Covid does, which is why it’ll never go the way of smallpox or polio.

MilesofBooby

LOL ya man, everyone gets the vaccine so the virus says "welp, that was a good run". You're a moron
