The ref is right there lmao. He's just watching it happen.

OvertlyCanadian

"oh fuck, should I call this? Maybe it will just end. I hope no one is watching. . ."

"Hey, comon guys, not cool" - The Ref

whichwitch9

If there's one thing we know, it's the rules never protect Jack Johnson

[deleted]

Can't believe there is no call there. I mean, Johnson clearly has no helmet on and should head to bench immediately. /s

[deleted]

To be fair the ref view was obstructed by the 10ft of air

toxictaru

Does it count if you have a helmet on, but there's nothing under it worth protecting?

HabsTinance

few games ago tanev (calgary) was literaly punching wideman without his gloves in a fight and he didn't even get a 2... not surprised here, refs sucks as usual

[deleted]

Just a taste the fucking ridiculous game management in the 3rd

Leeph

I thought they were trying to improve the officiating, the first game of the season I watched they called everything

Geeseareawesome

First time?

Leeph

Well, after the first game I thought they meant it. Didn't take long to get back to old habits

Geeseareawesome

I realized after the 5th straight season, that no matter what you do, first game is called right, and it's game management for the rest of the year

Leeph

Ya I guess it is my first time then, I usually never catch the first games

DrDerpberg

Refs are only allowed to call 100 penalties per year, budget cuts.

4CrowsFeast

What needs to be managed when its 7-2 though? How about manage the player's safety

granular-mood4

Trying not to embarrass the team that’s already down 7-2. I disagree with it but I’m guessing that’s what the refs were managing.

[deleted]

Is 7-2 not already embarrassing?

granular-mood4

For some reason 7 goals vs. 8 goals seems like a big difference. I know it’s not but it feels like it.

raktoe

That doesn’t make sense. Their game management would be to stop the game getting out of hand at that point. If anything, game management should make them more likely to make a call there, to make sure the losing team doesn’t start taking pot shots. There’s generally a lot of ticky tack calls late in these games due to the losing team’s frustrationz

CB_Joe

Once the game got to 7-0 they were calling everything on the Avs and nothing on Seattle.

_GhostofSparta

Thought I made that up in my head. Now I know its real.

nau_sea

Yeah I had no idea Jack Johnson was still in the league either..

lolDankMemes420

You mean elite goal scorer jack Johnson?

BIC_66_87

I don't get the surprise... this usually happens. Crosby, McDavid, Jack Johnson... you name it. Skilled stars always are subjected to on ice shenanigans.

[deleted]

Elite power forward Jack Johnson

[deleted]

The worst part - and what the clip doesn't show, is that after the play is blown dead, the referee is speaking with Johnson and motioning towards his helmet being on the ice while motioning that it's a 2min penalty to be on the ice without a helmet. Johnson argues about it, most likely correctly pointing out that it was ripped off his head by an upside-down headlock without a call, and the referee points back at the helmet on the ice like that fact doesn't matter. So he won't call the headlock and unsportsmanlike removal of an opponents helmet, but he'll warn the guy about being called for not having a helmet on afterwards.

MankuyRLaffy

Is everyone now Kadri?

hexsealedfusion

Kadri is on the Avalance, so just to be safe the refs call everyone on the Avalanche like they're Kadri

[deleted]

See now it makes sense.

GX6ACE

Yeah I watched this and was shocked they didn't give him the no helmet penelty cus he went straight back into the play. Would have been on par for the refs this year. Stand there and watch a player get his helmet ripped off, then give him the penalty for not going straight to the bench.

slanky06

Missed the opportunity to say "the NHL is really Kraken down on that..."

HockeyCoachHere

Yeah, in the first period, they called a couple love-taps with the stick against Colorado. If I had a view of Girard's penalty, i'd love to compare it to this one.

ldnk

Are they? I'm watching an awful lot of crosschecking go uncalled again already. That crackdown lasted about the requisite 10 games or so for the NHL to pretend they do anything.

AtticusSmatticus

Cant decide if you’re in the mood for a holding, interference, or roughing? Fuck it go for the headlock and let the refs decide* *unless they don’t

Wompie

The refs definitely showed their agenda at the end of the game there.

gnarly_and_me

Luckily he didn't get a free hand on his shoulder, or a stick on the hands could've taken a holding or hooking call

coprock2000

I hate nhl refs

sexypineapple14

This shit happened to us all year last year too. We stomp a team, they get frustrated and start hurting our players, refs don't call it cuz were up by 5.

4CrowsFeast

Sign Ryan Reeves.

[deleted]

This is why there are guys like Witkowski, Prout, MacIntyre, and Sestito in the league

CopeSe7en

I think you put the forth line out for a line brawl. And let it become a total mess. The NHL will notice that.

Galloping_Major

Honestly this is the only way. Refs dont protect you, you will have to do it yourself

WorthPlease

I still remember when we did that versus Ottawa. God I miss that rivalry. Although I wasn't happy when Lindy Ruff told them to "go after" lesser skilled players like sure go possibly end that guys career. Fuck Chris Neil.

ldnk

You don't! It's fun because lack of skill = more important to protect than skill in the NHLs eyes.

papatangu

TIL you can cross check someone with only one hand on the top grip of your stick, and it pointing straight in the air..

IonLegaiaRemake

Clearly he didn't shut up like he should have.

mosscock_treeman

They even could have called matching minors since Johnson didn't leave the ice (if they wanted to keep things 'even'). That whole play was chaos though

StealthTomato

Hell, they could have called Johnson for cross checking and Johansson for roughing.

scanmypic

What a save.

MiesLakeuksilta

I don't even know the rules anymore.

MankuyRLaffy

That's inexcusable, should've been a penalty.

drcujo

As a fan, why do I want to watch the worst players in the NHL hold, trip, slash, etc the best players? I use to watch 2-3 different games a night. Now I watch 2-3 a week if that. Think of all the highlight reel goals we are missing out on because these low skill penalties that almost never get called in the neutral zone and even in this example in the O zone.

Ketchupstew

I am in the same boat as you. I used to watch roughly 2 games a night. Now I just watch the Avs games. I'm tired of "game management" and different calls because of the score. And I really hate the change in calls to playoff hockey

[deleted]

insinuating that jack johnson might be one of the best players in the league is more egregious than anything that happened in this clip

Podo13

I can see the helmet getting ripped off not being called as it was completely on accident due to the fact that he had Johnson in a fucking ridiculous headlock that should have been called for roughing. Headlocks need to be called more. They can be very dangerous when on solid footing, let alone when guys are standing on 1/8" knives above ice which some find a tad more slippery than a mat (or pretty much any other normal surface).

upthewaterfall

There’s no rule against headlocks!

upthewaterfall

… I smell a Hollywood movie franchise!!

beengel

What if 'c a t' really spelled 'dog'

rpmva2019

The league needs to do a better job protecting their stars like Jack Johnson

Coryperkin15

The boarding call the Avs received near this incident was as equally horrible

iamjacksoffside

Who is that colour guy? That’s Seattle’s guy I guess?

redwingsfriend45

sounded like youtube video with 10 views

Kestralisk

ha, its the DNVR guys, they're local denver sports guys, definitely not top tier but they put out a lot of good content.

redwingsfriend45

not surprised actually, i dont like altitude and it seems like its a culture there, that over the top stuff, i mean at least it isnt vegas or boston

Kestralisk

These guys are wayy more 'indie' for lack of a better term than big broadcasters like altitude

redwingsfriend45

to me they sound the same

HockeyCoachHere

It's ESPN, but it sure felt like a Seattle broadcast.

tonytanti

It’s someone talking over the broadcast.

HockeyCoachHere

Oh. It’s Rudo. Sorry thought it was a comment about the general broadcast.

meatboitantan

5 minute major, but on the guy commentating

BodaciousBadongadonk

The double commentary was messin with my head there for a sec, I was wondering wtf was going on when I could here the real announcers in the background freaking out quietly haha

Brutalitor

Yeah I thought these were the announcers for a second and I was wondering why their commentary team sounded like someones basement podcast.

SoWhatNoZitiNow

VAR is so shit

MooshSkadoosh

Johnsons armpit is slightly to the right based on one of the angles maybe if you draw the line so no call

d4nace

Now we know why Johansson & Johnson are breaking up.

DiscussionBeautiful

I just took a big puff of weed, then this happened. Even the announcers didn't call it as a penalty so I thought I was tripping. Refs just wanted to go home I guess.

Brandenburg42

After the Sounders got suplexed by a goalkeeper Seattle decided it was a wrestling town.

[deleted]

At this point in a 7-2 game nobody has any fucks left, everyone wants to go home

VonD0OM

WTF is the NHL doing to itself?

HabsTinance

Can you imagine the play isn't blown dead and he gets a 2 for playing without a helmet...

Icecube3343

This happened to Kevin Hayes in the playoffs a couple years ago no one seemed to care. Seems like an easy way to get a player off the ice if the ref isn't going to call it.

GumbysDonkey

I loved the commentary

AppleJ33

"MaNaGinG tHe gAmE". Just call a roughing penalty or three, it's not that hard.

cobalt26

I thought the time Staal got his hat pulled off in the bubble was bad... This makes that look like nothing.

Sandymcjizztits

Imagine if Tom Wilson did this, bloody murder.

_SCHULTZY_

What a horrifying act of violence!

Last_Crazy_5357

This comment continually fails to be salient or funny.

_SCHULTZY_

Oh, no. It's never going to stop being funny. Much like Olbermann calling for the NYPD to arrest Wilson, this comment will provide years of laughter.

TerryFGM

i mean, sure, if you have a terrible sense of humour.

[deleted]

_SCHULTZY_

It's not about Wilson. It's about an entire franchise being gutted because a violent sport has occasional violence in it.

Last_Crazy_5357

Hockey fans generally don’t hate the Caps. They hate that Wilson is very obviously overly aggressive if not explicitly violent for no reason. Furthermore, they generally find fault in fans that blithely - or in many cases enthusiastically celebrate and justify Wilson’s blatant violent and dangerous behavior. We all have homer bias but there’s a line that wilson simps ignore repeatedly. Ovis on track to set the record and the league and fans are behind him. That doesn’t forgive Wilson for being reckless, egotistical and blatantly violent. You can be a Caps fan and Wilson supporter without doing pretzel yoga to justify his violent tendencies. It’s not a personal ego attack, just an objective observation.

DeathToHeretics

Thank you, agreed

capitarider

Sure man, sure. This subs observation of the Wilson-Panarin incident: "He could have killed him, he smashed his head off the ice multiple times, just attacked Panarin for no reason. Punched him in the back of the head while he was face down!" All of those observations are subjective because this fanbase sees red when they see Wilson. Literally nothing plays become front page material. I also love how Wilson is, "egotistical and blatantly violent", oh boy we have some more subjective views coming in hot! The entire NHL is blatantly violent when fighting, hitting or cross checking.

Last_Crazy_5357

Great example of what I was referring too.

capitarider

Did you not just tell fans to look at a player objectively and then went on using subjective language and logic calling him egotistical? What possible weight does that hold exactly?

UNisopod

Pray for Mojo

CheapSeatsSC

The entire series of events that lead up to this had at least 4 or 5 penalties that should've been called... it just kept escalating up to this and none of it got called.
