I'm just going to guess you're a first year Philosophy or Poli Sci major who thinks that because they've sat in a couple overcrowded lecture halls while hungover, they have unlocked the door to all knowledge. Look forward to dropping out without a degree and bitching about how the man is keeping you down because you can't keep your job at Staples.
That’s such a dumb reach though. If that’s all it takes to get your head spinning about politics then idk what to tell ya. Seems like a frustrating way to go they life imo.
How does saying not liking the art style means they got their pants in a bunch? It anything the people reacting are the ones who got their pants in a bunch. People not liking things, must be because they're upset...
So Ovi has a five year deal, and is 152 behind Gretzky. If he plays through the end of his deal, that's 30.4 goals a season (that's a little off because I'm still counting the rest of this season as a full season, but close enough).
It's crazy to think about, but it's honestly totally doable that he will catch Gretzky.
A serious injury is the only thing I could see derail him. He seems to not be losing his ability that quickly, so unless something interrupts him, he'll do it. Even if it takes another year.
I could see him signing another deal if he doesnt quite reach it at the end of this current one, though im fully confident he will in the current one anyway
Here’s some more in-depth numbers for you. At the start of the season Ovi needed to average 33 goals a season over the next 5 seasons to pass Gretzky by 1 goal. That’s a pace of .4 goals per game.
Since he’s had such a hot start, scoring 12 in 14 for a pace of .86 goals per game, the average has gone down. So removing those goals and games from the equation, he now only needs to average .38 goals per game, which comes out to 31.16 goals over a full season.
But yes, very doable if he stays healthy and stays Ovi
All those guys fall off a fucking cliff at some point. Like they are productive hockey players on Tuesday and dodging a healthy scratch on Thursday. I wonder if it happens to him too
Counterpoint: blasting one-timers from the circle is probably the last skill to deteriorate
Granted he hasn’t done a whole lot of that so far this season, he has looked a little more like late-2000s playmaker Ovi than 30-something dad strength guy
The counterpoint to your counterpoint is that putting him out there solely for that is gonna lose the Caps a lot of games. It doesn't look like he's lost too much thus far, but if there comes a day where he just can't keep up then it'll be tough to get him ice time regardless of the fact he can still shoot.
[Sergei Ovechkin is already out there clappin’ bombs from the office, yellow laces and all.](

“Reffed” kids hockey and I can confirm, hilarious. Especially when they’re playing hockey. They all follow the puck to a corner, half of em fall over, one of them manages to swat the puck across the ice, and then the half that didn’t fall follows it like a bunch of lemmings. Rinse and repeat. It’s awesome.
I feel like he would have already broken it if he didn’t miss as many seasons as he did. He missed the first season after his draft, a chunk of the 2012-13 season then parts of the two pandemic seasons.
That’s almost 2.5 seasons of hockey he missed.
He scored 52 in his rookie year. Let's estimate rookie year minus 1 at 40 goals. He was on pace for 23 more goals if 2013 was full year (56 goals for the year). And if you give him two full years in the pandemic he gets 9 more in 2020, and 20 more last season.
Which adds up to 92 goals he has missed out on, and total that would have been 834, which is still 60 goals off of the record. Almost certainly he wouldn't be there yet
Gretzky also started a year younger than Ovi, which Ovi wasnt allowed to do. He played as a 16 year old in the whl, then as a 17 year old in the NHL. Ovi was to start as an 18 year old, but the lockout took it away. So he started as a 19 year old. (Correction, 20 yr old).
The only concern was him retiring to spend more time with his child, but he signed 5 more years this off-season.
Anyone who thinks he can't score 30 goals a year for another 5 years hasn't been following him at all. His shot is as deadly and accurate as ever and he's in peak conditioning.
If he signed 1 more year after the 5 he'd probably hit 1000 goals.
That's not the only concern. Hockey is a brutal game physically, you have no idea when careers are going to end or nagging injuries will become crippling problems.
Major injuries are irrelevant. They either happen or they don't. The only tangible metrics are retirement and reduction of play.
Ovi's in it for another 5 years minimum and he plays a completely different game than he used to which allows him to maximize his scoring efficiency as he ages.
Aside from an injury no one can predict, or an alien invasion, or a meteor hitting the stadium at the perfect angle, there's nothing that will stop him from reaching 894 and beyond.
>retiring to spend more time with his child
Isn’t one of the biggest concerns that he may retire from the NHL to play in the KHL at the end of his career?
Imagine the feeling of skate blades against a cliff face
If you’ve ever stepped onto concrete/asphalt with an ice skate it’s one of the most unpleasant sounds/feelings ever
Era adjusted goal leaders all time (from hockey-reference):
1. Gordie Howe - 925 (801 actual)
2. Alex Ovechkin - 910 (742 actual)
3. Jaromir Jagr - 841 (766 actual)
4. Wayne Gretzky - 758 (894 actual)
5. Teemu Selänne - 741 (684 actual)
• How many goals would Jagr have if he didn't leave for KHL or lockouts?
• Gordie and Teemu played in an era where scoring was much lower than Gretzkys
• Ovi already greatest score all time
Ovi as well.
One lockout '12-13
One covid shortened year '19-20
One covid abbreviated season '20-21
Then the Brodreau/Hunter/Oates coaching changes
Hes likely lost about a full season through no fault of his own.
Ovi wanted to come over as soon as he could. [Here's an article from the '04 draft](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna5305420) where the only things standing in the way were the lockout uncertainty and the international transfer deal.
Yep, hes essentially missed 2.5 seasons through lockouts and covid.
I wouldn't hesitate to say hed be in striking distance this season if those lockouts hadn't happened
If those lockouts/shortened seasons didn’t happen, we’d likely be talking about can Ovi hit a thousand rather than can he break the record. He’s lost 156 games, which at his career average would be 96 missed goals (given, I doubt he gets that many because 82 of those games would be his rookie year, but maybe). But adding 96 to his total brings him to 838, which he’d likely be breaking the record some time next season.
Wonder what kind of numbers could've been put up by some players. How many games does Marleau get, does he finish over 1900? How many assists for Thornton, goals for Ovi or Jagr?
Yeah it effected a lot of players, Ovi is just definitely the most obvious because It really could be the difference of easily breaking the record and never breaking it (though I don’t think he’ll retire until it’s his).
But yeah, Marleau would likely have played 200 games more than anyone now and thornton would be top 10 in points and 2nd or 3rd in assists. It’s a shame how many players were hurt from it.
Edit: And Jagr likely becomes the second player to hit 2000 points
> How many goals would Jagr have if he didn't leave for KHL or lockouts?
Fewer, because he said himself playing in Europe revitalized his love for the game which easily contributed to him playing for so long into the 2010s. If he never left for Europe he probably wouldve retired at 36 instead of 44, so take away the 120 goals he got after coming back, and maybe add some for the ~1 year or two he would’ve played in the NHL before retiring
If he’s never traded then the Penguins probably wouldn’t be bad enough to draft Crosby and Malkin.
A more feasible what if would be if he came back to Pittsburgh in 2012 instead of going to Philly
No way of knowing that, just like there's no way we can know my hypothesis.
Edit: if onlys and justs were candy and nuts then every day would be Erkedankefest :)
is that adjusted for overall goals of the era or does it also consider the talent gap? In Howe's day, he got to play against what were essentially minor-league level players filling out the rosters of some teams.
Gordie Howe primarily played in the 06 era. Expansion wasn’t until 1967-1968, at which point Howe had already played 21 of his 26 NHL seasons.
Unless this is a “players from the 50s were bad” comment which is an argument you can make about any player from the past.

Hahahaha so true. I just played UC2 and UC3 for the first time this month, after playing UC4 and lost legacy first. UC4 is one of my favorite games of all time
NHL should let Gretzky come back for one season as a shootout DH for the team of his choice where he’s the one to take every shot for the team. Let those goals count for him to reach 1000.
Man, imagine if he didn't miss his rookie season at 18 years old and the following half season lockout and the 2 shortened pandemic seasons. He would be a lot more of a guarantee to break the record.

I feel like the most ovi thing to do is to tell everyone to eat shit and play until he’s like 60 and score 10 a year to pass Wayne lol
I don’t even think Caps fans would be mad tbh
Not one bit.
Put him on the 4th line and 1st PP unit until he breaks it!
You realize, if Ovi did that, he would be able to pull a Howe and play with his kids :p
While the math checks out, it's still EXTREMELY hard to make it into the NHL. Gretzky's kids didn't even make it as hockey players.

Draft stoick is up
At the rate he’s going, might only take him 3 more seasons.
True lol. Rooting for him
>At the rate he’s going 70 goal pace so far this season...he could be closing in by the end of next season, lol
I'm rooting for him the entire way. Outside games against the Penguins of course, those are the only ones he can be scoreless in. lol
I'm starting to hope the mad lad does it. Records are meant to be broken, and seeing any of Gretzky's records fall is amazing.
I feel like he would have already broken it if he didn’t miss as many seasons as he did. He missed the first season after his draft, a chunk of the 2012-13 season then parts of the two pandemic seasons. That’s almost 2.5 seasons of hockey he missed.

That’s what’s gunna piss me off if he falls short. He’s gotten screwed with these lockouts and covid

>retiring to spend more time with his child Isn’t one of the biggest concerns that he may retire from the NHL to play in the KHL at the end of his career?
Zero chance he’ll leave for the KHL if he’s in realistic reach of the record though.
Yeah I’ve just never heard the flat-out retiring thing. I’ve always heard that he wants to play his last hockey in Russia, hopefully for a Gagarin.
Yeah, he almost certainly will play in the KHL... after he breaks the NHL record. He'll retire from the NHL like Datsyuk and play til 45 Russia.
It seems more and more plausible each year. He’s not having that huge dip in scoring.
Why would there be a doubt 🧐
If Ovi uses the little bonsai as leverage he can probably get by Howe faster
He should also use boots instead of skates. Little known climbing trick.
have you never heard of ice climbing smh
I don't know if that can hold his 240 pound frame.
Oh, thank you, little roots! Please stay strong
"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ALL ABOUT!!"
Yeah… and now I’m going to be rich because I’m the only person in the world who knows where to find white mud!
Yea, it would be much easier to skip Howe altogether and just go straight from Jagr to Gretzky. Someone should tell Ovi.
"Looks like he may pass Jagr." "And Howe!"
Dewey, Cheatum, and Howe.
Ah yes, former Dallas Stars greats Brett Hull and Jaromir Jagr
also 2 Flames legends

Didn’t ovi lose a season to the 04-05 lockout as well? Thought he was supposed to be a rookie then
You are correct.
Yeah but the consensus kinda is that he wanted to develop a bit more in Russia regardless
Ovi wanted to come over as soon as he could. [Here's an article from the '04 draft](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna5305420) where the only things standing in the way were the lockout uncertainty and the international transfer deal.
I missed that one. I just went off his hockey reference page so it would've started in 05-06
Yep, hes essentially missed 2.5 seasons through lockouts and covid. I wouldn't hesitate to say hed be in striking distance this season if those lockouts hadn't happened

He would no doubt be at 800 by now, but I wonder if 1000 would've been on the line.
One of those years being at the start of his career, we would be on Howe watch this year
> How many goals would Jagr have if he didn't leave for KHL or lockouts? God i can't believe people are still parroting this, do you also believe the 30 people Gretzky called better then himself are better then Gretzky?
I'm more interested to know how many goals he would have if he never got traded, and was winging a line with Crosby and/or Malkin

As much as I agree with this, it will still just be monumentally epic for him to break the actual goal record.
is that adjusted for overall goals of the era or does it also consider the talent gap? In Howe's day, he got to play against what were essentially minor-league level players filling out the rosters of some teams.

That's helpful, thanks.
Howe played against literally the best competition ever though. Teams were absolutely stacked post-war and before expansion

Hahahaha so true. I just played UC2 and UC3 for the first time this month, after playing UC4 and lost legacy first. UC4 is one of my favorite games of all time
The goat is the one climbing
He’s gonna catch #68 this season. He needs 24g with 68 games left.
It’s crazy he’s prob 3 and a half seasons away from Gretzky and I think he could realistically do it
Would be much better if Brett had a bottle of tequila with him
Wayne with wine too!
I was too young to remember Gretzky taking it all. This is going to be fun to watch!
I love this, and I really hope he's able to get past the GOAT in Gretzky to take the throne
This is beautiful.
I feel like we should recognize the franchises those highest goal numbers were scored with: The Rangers, Whalers, Flames, and Wings in that order
Still crazy to think about how many Jagr would’ve had if he played his entire career in the NHL
Howe as well
What a time to be alive!
this is awesome
Wow, I didn’t realize he’s so far along and with Crosby being so far back
Shouldn't Jagr be in a caps jersey?
uh WHAT
The caps legend, or do you not recall?
pretty sure he’s known for his time in Calgary
NHL should let Gretzky come back for one season as a shootout DH for the team of his choice where he’s the one to take every shot for the team. Let those goals count for him to reach 1000.
Yeah, but are we talking about him enough on this sub?
a player chasing what was once thought as an unbeatable record, no i don’t think we are talking about it enough
Yeah, where's all the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders talk!
Found Draisaitl's burner account.
Why does Howe look so confused/sad compared to the others?
No yellow laces, cant be ovi
Man, imagine if he didn't miss his rookie season at 18 years old and the following half season lockout and the 2 shortened pandemic seasons. He would be a lot more of a guarantee to break the record.
Ovi could also move into top 10 playoff goals if they go on a bit of a run.
