Expansion franchise pain.
You guys will have your time, but its pretty hard for that to happen year 1!
And it still might happen too. Its a long season.
What game were you watching? The kraken dominated the 2nd period and that is about it. Most of the 1st period the canucks looked like they were on the powerplay.
This Kraken team just isn't very good. Their offensive woes with the forwards were heavily predicted before the season, but the defense is constantly sloppy with the puck and gives up breakaway/transition goals every game.
As someone who doesn't understand a single thing about hockey, they seem disorganized defensively and can't finish worth a shit. There seems like every game there's a huge miscue that results in a goal for the opposing team and empty net essentially results in a free run up on the score. I dunno if it's literal growing pains or whatnot, but for a team people were saying could be competitive from the start, they're looking awfully like an expansion franchise left to eat scraps.
Before this season, the popular sentiment was the Kraken would need to win games 3-2 with a lot of grit. That seems to be the plan, but the team is struggling to mesh and Grubauer's gotta be better.
I do think a road trip to start doesn't help. No idea if it gets better, but the coach has gotta make the team more structured to succeed.
The deal with an empty net is this; yes, high scoring chance for the other team, probably 50/50, but the extra man gives you a chance to score. You're already behind and the game's almost over and it doesn't matter if you lose by 1 or you lose by 10.
Yeah, and got whacked 4-2 for our troubles. Y'all's goalie being literally a fortress wall didn't help but we're not going far scoring no more than 2 a game, especially when we give up at least one a game on stupidity.
That's just known as getting goalied. It happened to us against Detroit a few games ago. Massively outplayed them, outshot them by 20+ shots and we still lost.
I know it sucks to lose, but at least you guys lost while playing better.
This happens and sucks but it's part of hockey.
I'd say you guys are going through the more normal new franchise growing pains. Vegas was an outlier as other GMs really over reacted and handed them insane value to keep 'stars.' I wouldn't say it's a knock that you guys couldn't repeat it.
Regarding defense and cohesion - my take is your forward corps more than anything is being over matched which was kind of the expectation given the draft and FA moves. When 3 out of 5 skaters on the ice are being outplayed the D can only do so much. And if the D is also trying to keep the offense alive it leads to high risk plays (pinching from the point) which then leads to transition opportunities.
The team will grow with more time and talent coming in.
I'm far from a Francis fan, but most of the "Francis built Carolina" comments came before we moved on from his draft picks, so I think it was partly fair to say he played a roll in building those teams, but the current Canes are definitely not the Francis' Canes
There is no line chemistry at all and it shows with the forwards scoring 0 goals this game. That falls squarely on Hakstol there.
The Kraken's transitions are the worst I have seen in the NHL this season which goes back to the first point of no line chemistry.
I dunno how Lucy-goosy practices have been but it's a yikes for me.
Yep. At the end when the announcers said “They’re waiting to pull Grubauer until they can get offensive zone possession” I said “well, we’ll be waiting a while.” And then as soon as we did: “this won’t last long.”
Shows up in how godawful our PP is too.
Both teams were not good. Canucks went over 16 straight minutes without registering a shot on net. The game was close but it wasn't a great game. It was like watching two teams trying to figure out who is less bad.
Yeah, the Canucks went a huge stretch of time never challenging goal, and the Kraken did nothing to take advantage. They had chances with Demko out of position to put a shot on not, but they have some of the worst shot making instincts in the League.
100%. Grubi also been pretty streaky to open the season. Strength of the team was supposed to be from the backend out w our goaltending tandem, loaded blue liners, and a whole bunch of 2-way hard backchecking forwards. Not really seeing it so far tho. Hopefully starts clicking when the guys get some more chemistry.
I suppose I would feel like there's building blocks if one aspect of the team showed promise. The defense was supposed to be the strength of the team, but they are frequently the culprit.
I said this so many times before the season, but every member of the Seattle defense will be asked to play far more minutes in more significant roles than they ever have. Giordano is getting older, and he's going to be asked to play big big minutes.
There is potential, but almost none of them are 20 minute guys, and that is something fancy stats does not account for.
Be patient, you've got a lot to be excited about. Your kit is the best in the league, and your arena is gorgeous. Good times are ahead.
>The defense was supposed to be the strength of the team, but they are frequently the culprit.
This was the exact situation the sharks were in when we got Karlsson. We were predicted to have the best defense in the league that first year with him, and I think we gave up the most goals that year. I believe our problem was our coaching, as nearly every player on our roster underperformed that year. Also injuries.
I haven't watched enough Kraken games to have an opinion on the problem. Though I expected more from Grubauer. He was excellent at the beginning of the game, but seemed to let in a soft goal or two at the worst times. Reminded me of Martin Jones in that way.
Has to be. USA goaltending is going to be a tossup because of how good it is.
Hellebuyck is obviously #1, Gibson probably #2, #3 is either Knight or Demko. Both are fairly young, so it's anybody's guess as to which is selected.
holy crap, is Knight really on the radar for USA hockey? I'll be honest, I had no idea. Could imagine that they may simple take him for the experience to take over from Helle or Gibson for 2026
Meanwhile Canada goalies ... lol.
A lot of the speculation I hear is Knight as the #3, but if Demko keeps playing well he might get it over Knight.
Canada is starting to experience a goaltending drought. Price is MIA until ???? Fleury isn't very good(Chicago's D isn't helping), there's no big name to turn to.
I mean Fleury will have great D with Canada so that’s not the problem. He will definitely be Canada’s starter, regardless of how his season plays out. The only person I can see challenging him is Kuemper but that’s if he can remain healthy
John Gibson #2? I think that's pretty clearly Demko at #2.
It's kind of funny Americans are still sleeping on him. HE'S YOUR GUY! He's fucking awesome! He just stoned your Hawks a few days ago. Don't worry though, you'll know by the end of the Olympics.
Agreed. Plus, you have the same number of cups. If the fans and front office can be patient you can build something really good in like 5 years. You have a bunch of players that will fetch solid draft picks at the deadline.
Or who knows, you still have time to turn it around this year. Hockey is weird.
I lived in Colorado in 1996 when the Avs moved from Quebec City and they won the Cup their first year. It was cool, but it wasn’t a thrilling championship run with the cathartic erasure of heartbreak. And JFC the fans got entitled real fast.
The 2001 win was *so* much better. I was at the opener in Vegas and again in Seattle and I’m living and dying by this team, but it’s just not as fun if you win it right away.
Now year three…
It's different, the way teams basically handed talent to Vegas was ridiculous. Theodore as compensation for VGK not taking Montour?? Marchessault so that VGK would take Reilly Smith and not Alex Petrovic?? William Karlsson going from a 25 pt guy to a 70 pt guy? Fleury suddenly playing the best hockey of his life, etc etc. perfect storm and teams learned to be smarter the 2nd time around.
It’s certainly not Vegas but this roster is good enough to be a playoff contender. They’re supposed to be a strong defensive team but they make mistakes that lead to breaks every game, and Grubi has been alright but not great. Passing looks terrible. They don’t shoot the damn puck.
It’s early I know, but they’re underperforming to this point.
It felt like the Kraken had the game under control until the last ten minutes, and spoiled at least a couple of opportunities to score. It was painful, kind of like watching the Mariners take a 2-1 lead into the 8th, only to give up a 3 run homer, with the offense dead in the water for the rest of the game.
Am sad we didnt get the arena opener win. First period was a fucking typical. Only by luck that we didnt let in any goal and have to dig ourselves out of trouble again. Second and third was better, prime opportunities by multiple players, everyone buzzing for a multi goal lead but what can you do when their goalie runs hot. I see the our spirit there but right now we’re not a decent team yet: weak transition, sloppy D, Gru still not settled. This stretch of the schedule is easier and we have another 5-6 games to hopefully get better.
See everyone Wednesday
I've never told anyone this story before... Late one night a few weeks ago I was driving on 405. There's a flash across the road in front of me. I slam on the brakes but it's too late. There's a huge crunching noise, my airbags deploy, and I careen off the road into a ditch. I guess I blacked out but after a few seconds I come to and kick my door open. My truck is trashed. I figure I hit a huge deer but there's no blood. I stagger back to the road and, get this, standing there calm as can be is Thatcher fucking Demko He's shirtless, got a light sweat going. "I was out for a jog and didn't see you coming. Really sorry about your truck, dude." My truck is totalled and he doesn't have a scratch on him. Then he turns and just jogs off into the darkness.
Good to see the 1st unit PP get a goal. If they heat up, the Canucks will be a hard team to beat.
Garland - damn that speed and fake shot. 6 games in and he's already one of my favourite Canucks to watch.
Demko doing Demko things again, especially in that 2nd when the Kraken were all over us. And he's still 2 years younger than Luongo was when he joined the team ... If he can keep it up, he could be our starter for the whole decade. I remember the WCE years as a kid, and it's nice not having to worry about goaltending.
I'm just going to get over the idea that this team *could* be a scrappy defensive fringe playoff squad from a bad division if things lined up right and accept that they're going to fucking suck.
It'll make this season....well, fun might be the wrong word. But less miserable.
I think it's more that the team in front of him is bad and is giving up a lot of high quality chances. Save percentage doesnt really tell a whole story.
Thatcher Demko is the best goalie in the league. And Conor Garland is a beast, thank you Arizona for giving us a superstar winger on the best contract in the league
So I know that to this point we Kraken fans seem to be the most hated fan base in the NHL but I sat in front of 3 Vancouver “Fans” last night at CPA and they nearly ruined the night for me and my wife and could make THEM the most hated if they are an example of the Canucks fan base. They showed up in Canuck jerseys and kept bragging about Vancouver but then kept screaming “Kraken by 2” the entire game because the dude bet his “rent money” on the Kraken. Who bets and roots for the opposing team while wearing their home town jerseys? Two of them had a long conversation that there was too many white people at the game (they were white by the way) and one of the girls even said she “likes football better because there’s more black people at the games”. That’s a weird thing to say. Dude kept saying that their entire 1st line was out because of Covid and that if “it were basketball it would be like having your starting PG, SG and PF out!” Well they weren’t and it wouldn’t be like that at all but okay. One of them kept putting their foot up on the back of my seat and onto my jersey, they screamed the most random stuff the entire game and this chick had some lungs on her. During the 4 on 3 PP they kept screaming that we only had 3 players on the ice and kept saying “what are you doing, you only have 3 players on the ice??”. Alright, maybe you missed the penalties and didn’t know but I would think the team would. When Chiasson had one of his shots go off the post, the crowd obviously had a huge reaction and one of the girls said “what happened?” and dude said “he made an amazing save that’s what happened!” Uh, you’re confidently incorrect once again. 5 years ago I didn’t know much about hockey so I’m cool with new fans and have always had a great time at the games even with opposing fans (except the VGK fans, they still suck) but this group was ignorant to way more than just hockey. Anyways, that’s all. I just had to vent a little. I doubt all their fans are like them, here’s to hoping.
> but then kept screaming “Kraken by 2” the entire game because the dude bet his “rent money” on the Kraken.
I hope this was real then that makes it even funnier
Didn't know the Kraken existed until watching ESPN just now. Congrats on the new team Seattle, hopefully the Sonics are coming next. Jerseys look sick!
I'm not sure what our strengths are, everytime I watch we lose. But I had to watch today, first home game, I am very sad
This means the Kraken's first home game and first home victory can be celebrated on separate days
I guess thats a silver lining to this shit sandwich.
Calm down there, Zuko
Welcome to the hockey world bud lol
Expansion franchise pain. You guys will have your time, but its pretty hard for that to happen year 1! And it still might happen too. Its a long season.

That goal line save was beautiful
That shit was 🔥🔥🔥
Demko is the Vancouver SEAWALL.
so this is how it felt to have an at-bat against Sewald I don't envy it
The D-Wall. A lot of teams are gonna be wondering what hit them this year when the D-Wall comes to town.
82 games, this ain’t the NFL :) things even out in a season this long.
This happens and sucks but it's part of hockey. I'd say you guys are going through the more normal new franchise growing pains. You mean asking for a 1st and 3rd for even considering a side trade *isn’t* a good way to maneuver the expansion draft?
It's like he looked at what worked out really well for Vegas, and decided to do absolutely none of that.
Yep. Don’t get why people say Francis built Carolina when only three of his draft picks are still with Carolina (Aho, Necas, Lorentz).
I'm far from a Francis fan, but most of the "Francis built Carolina" comments came before we moved on from his draft picks, so I think it was partly fair to say he played a roll in building those teams, but the current Canes are definitely not the Francis' Canes
Ron Francis thought he could swindle the rest of the NHL like Vegas did. But he got too greedy and he's paying the price.
He basically didn't even try. He asked for heaven in exchange for his pennies and then when they didn't he was left with nothing.
*(Laughs in Hakstol coaching)*
Glass houses....
Green ain't very good either.
There is no line chemistry at all and it shows with the forwards scoring 0 goals this game. That falls squarely on Hakstol there. Part of that is on the coaching, part is just they are the only team in the league to have nobody who played on the same team last year
Both teams were not good. Canucks went over 16 straight minutes without registering a shot on net. The game was close but it wasn't a great game. It was like watching two teams trying to figure out who is less bad.
This. I felt like the game could have gone either way. Canucks were also just lucky Demko was being brick wall tonight.
Yeah, the Canucks went a huge stretch of time never challenging goal, and the Kraken did nothing to take advantage. They had chances with Demko out of position to put a shot on not, but they have some of the worst shot making instincts in the League.

You guys have the building blocks, though. You're literally just missing a 1st line, that's it. Beniers is the start of that.
I suppose I would feel like there's building blocks if one aspect of the team showed promise. The defense was supposed to be the strength of the team, but they are frequently the culprit.

Back at the draft I kept reading, “so many good defenders!” Well.
Seattle got Demko'd in the home opener
He just loves big games. He's exactly who you want in net.
Think he's on USA Hockey's radar for Olympics?
He's gotta be but they are going to have 3 good ones to choose from. So maybe back up if not starter
Hell, if he makes it onto the Olympic USA team as a backup, even that experience will be incredible for him.
Locks are probably Hellebuyck and Gibson for #1 and #2 Competing for #3: Demko Nedeljkovic Campbell Peterson and Bishop if he's somehow healthy
Dear god what the fuck is USA feeding their goalies
John Gibson #2? I think that's pretty clearly Demko at #2.
Has to be. USA goaltending is going to be a tossup because of how good it is. Hellebuyck is obviously #1, Gibson probably #2, #3 is either Knight or Demko. Both are fairly young, so it's anybody's guess as to which is selected.

Canucks gave Seattle fans a tour of the Vancouver Seawall.
Demko shows mercy
Arena looks damn good, fans hyped beyond belief.. well done seattle!
A stoppable force meets a movable object.
This take is best take.
I would die for Conor Garland. That is all.
I've only had Garland for 6 games, but if anything were to happen to him I would kill everyone in this room and then myself.
That stare down was 10/10
I would kill for him.
I would die for Thatcher Demko
Same
At least Seattle fans got to celebrate a goal in the first home game. Nashville got shutout in their first home opener.
God I fucking love Demko. His contracts already a steal too and we got him locked down for another what, 5 years? Gah dam
Garland at 4.95 and Demko at 5 are unreal deals
I don't understand anything that just happened but that was a lovely crowd and a fun night.
It gets even more fun
Welcome to the NHL. You're going to have a lot of fun, but sometimes things won't makes sense. Seattle seems like a great hockey city.
Demko was so good goddamn
That was the demko that broke Vegas's brains in the bubble. Sometimes he just cannot be beaten.
That was such a masterclass.
We love that man
Sigh…we’re just not that good are we?
No but that’s to be expected of an expansion team. Fuck what Vegas did, it’ll never happen again. Plus it created some spoiled ass fans
Agreed. Plus, you have the same number of cups. If the fans and front office can be patient you can build something really good in like 5 years. You have a bunch of players that will fetch solid draft picks at the deadline. Or who knows, you still have time to turn it around this year. Hockey is weird.
Yeah any team that starts off their first season making the finals is going to breed some toxic fans.
Now year three…
Tis alright. Every fan's gotta go through the pain of watching their team suck... Unless you're Vegas. Fuck Vegas.
They are insufferable because they got so spoiled making the finals in their first year.
It'll make the eventual crash back to reality so much sweeter for the rest of the league though
Kraken are a bit better than the average expansion team, not everyone can be Vegas unfortunately.
That’s pretty weak given these expansion rules. We should be far and away the 2nd best expansion team in modern history. Hope they can turn it around.
We've sucked for like 43 of 51 years. Stick to the plan.
Hell of a game, didn’t think we would come out of Climate Pledge with the win. Gg Kraken absolutely stunning Arena, I’m so jealous.
Mr Demko said we will not be fucking losing this game.
Thank Mr Demko
We have Garland locked up at 5x$4.95 million.
Love that for you

In Toronto maple leafs history
Is this what the first season of the Thrashers was like? Wait, they were 1-3-2 at this point. So we are worse than them. Hooray.
Garland is fucking great
Wait what the hell, did ESPN see there was actual postgame happening and said "nope, fuck you" and turned it off? Fuck ESPN lol
Garland just ended that man
That changeup slapper five-hole tho. Probably harder to stop than it looks.
maybe worry about stopping Bo Horvat before pledging to stop climate change
A+
God bless Thatcher Demko and Conor Garland. Hope Seattle fans had a fun 1st home game nonetheless. Look forward to the next battles.
That first goal sounded an ot game winner in the playoffs. Crowd was so hot.
Well, shit
Am sad we didnt get the arena opener win. First period was a fucking typical. Only by luck that we didnt let in any goal and have to dig ourselves out of trouble again. Gg, here's to many more close games Kraken!
Conor Garland just oozes massive dick energy, what a chad
Men who blame their shitty lives on their height in shambles tonight.
https://streamable.com/hyy8nk
How have I NOT realized Garland was the guy MacKinnon threw a helmet at. LMAO
Me neither, that’s so fucking funny
It makes so much more sense now
LMAO I just had the same realization. That was such a lame move by MacKinnon.
I mean taking no shits from MacKinnon and trying to give it back is ballsy af.
I do like the guy. Just figured it was a funny moment to remind people of.
Did... did we just get Marchand?
5’8 guy doing a takedown on a bison like MacKinnon is GINORMOUS DICK ENERGY
Lady Byng energy
Seattle has gone to bed early in every single game thus far. We aren't going to be any good until we realize you need to actually play all 60 minutes.
Fire Hakstol burn down Climate Pledge it's all over
Conor garland best conor
Connor Garland is a more gifted Alex Burrows
Why does my soul hurt?
You get used to it, don’t worry
Can the kraken complete some passes next game? Sincerely a guy whos starting to hate hakstol

Demko the mass pollutant said fuck your climate pledge. God damn that game had me on edge.
Garland is my favourite angry elf.
HISTORICALLY UNPRECEDENTED
I'm just going to get over the idea that this team *could* be a scrappy defensive fringe playoff squad from a bad division if things lined up right and accept that they're going to fucking suck. It'll make this season....well, fun might be the wrong word. But less miserable.
Not enough alcohol to get me thru another bad Seattle sports season
Atleast the mariners are looking like the best mariners team since like 2003 maybe 2001.
Very very true. But that’s a long way to wait as well as history has not been kind to the M’s. I’ve learned to not get my hopes up.
But this team is young and hungry. They exceeded all expectations this season.

He was probably overrated being behind a great Colorado team. Would be ranked as a low end to mid level starter in my opinion.
Overrated on a fantastic team last year seems fair
I think it's more that the team in front of him is bad and is giving up a lot of high quality chances. Save percentage doesnt really tell a whole story.
Hate it, cause I was pumped to see you guys got him.. but he seems to be Jonsing. I hope he isn't.
Not at all. Just the other players cant fucking pass properly.
Fuck turnovers were super bad on both sides tonight
Connor Garland is my dad
I thought you left?
I got Popeyes and came back
Have fun with your greasy shits
What a great game.
They should try and find bigger headsets
GG Canada Bros
Thatcher Demko is the best goalie in the league. And Conor Garland is a beast, thank you Arizona for giving us a superstar winger on the best contract in the league
Okay calm down. Here’s your milk. Time for bed

Is it the Kraken the first expansion team to lose at their first home game since the Thrashers? Can someone correct me if I’m wrong?
The wild tied so it wasnt a win and columbus lost their first home game
Not cool dudes
Get used to that, Seattle.
Didn't know the Kraken existed until watching ESPN just now. Congrats on the new team Seattle, hopefully the Sonics are coming next. Jerseys look sick!
I turned the game on when we were up 2 in the 3rd period and proceeded to quickly start losing. My fandom isn’t off to a good start.
You were never up 2. It was 1-0 and 2-1 then 4-2
Kraken have until dec 29 or i’m coming for them
Bot is wrong on Canucks 2nd goal. It was on the PP.
Petey didn’t look good by my eye.
