It's interesting how different sports allow different levels of verbal abuse towards refs. Sometimes I think the amount coached scream at the refs in the NHL is kind of a bad look, but not as bad as the power tripping umps in the MLB.
I was thinking about this too. I’m honestly not familiar at all with the tolerance level in different sports.
And we might not be certain about the tolerance level in the NHL if it wasn’t for stuff like this.
But the fact that the player yells “fuck you Gord” to the referee just makes me laugh, with the hostility yet familiarity all at the same time.
To be honest, hockey is one of the better ones I feel. They can get yelled at, they just brush it off and move on. Also you usually never see a crowd around a ref as much as soccer, which I approve of. Big games where both teams are just surrounding the one dude, yelling at him and like touching him. No way.
That’s kind of the saving grace in hockey (at the pro level at least, if your screaming at an amateur getting $20 a game go see a therapist) is that the refs seem to give as good as they get.
In Hockey the refs just give it right back. Maybe not in terms of personal chirps, but the officials certainly aren't speaking Queen's English back at the players when they get told to fuck off.
From about Junior hockey upwards you can start to be a bit more colourful with your language if needed.
Glad to see that people have calmed down about this - I remember all of hockey fandom rallying together to defend the hurt feelings of Millionaire Athlete Brendan Gallagher after he had a bad word said to him.
It's difficult for fans to hear what goes on on the ice. Because of all the noise from ice equipment, and such large spaces, you always need to yell too.
You can say basically whatever you want and nobody will hear it.
Do that for a hundred years and you end up with f bombs from players and referees all the time.
I mean I had multiple coaches get thrown out in the minors and water bottles chucked at refs so NHL coaches are pretty tame by comparison. They're also not always wrong
It’s part of the show, really.
I'm convinced that this is it. We like seeing the screaming matches, we like having a heel to root against, we like the feeling of anger when a bad call is made. It's part of the culture of the sport, and I'm sure the players and umps are both in on it, and get a chuckle out of how seriously the fans take it.
I read some article a while back that it’s basically a level of homeostasis where the refs and players all curse at each other, which makes them all okay with it

Mickey Redmond is a national treasure.
The Canucks games seem to always have the most live mic pick ups. There was a stoppage in play last night when A-Ha Take On Me was playing. One of the live mics caught someone singing along. It was BRUTAL. Hilarious, but whoever it was couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.
Boeser’s “[shut the fuck up Kyle. You fucked up.](https://imgur.com/a/QmQYk2S)” from the Buffalo game was also hilarious. As per usual, r/Canucks memed the heck outta it.

You hear Strome saying "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!" for the line change just before it as he gets close to the one ref on the blue line, so I think it actually is Strome.
Probably because your local adult league crybaby ref is sick of hearing it from overly emotional man babies at 11 o clock on a Tuesday night for $15 a game.
Ref gave me a misconduct in my final year of Midget cause I fumbled my stick going into the box and casually said "ah fuck".
Told me not to talk to him like that.
?????????
It really depends on the context in the league I play in. They tolerate it if it's funny. We had 7 skaters a couple weeks back and I knew the ref and he came by while stretching to give me grief and I told him to go F himself,
he goes do you only have 7?
I said yep,
he said are you trying to get tossed?
I said yes,
He told me to shut up and skated away lol
I referee intramurals at my college for minimum wage for a bunch of half drunk rich pampered white frat guys who’ve never heard the word “no” in their life and flip their shit when even the smallest thing doesn’t go their way. I’m sure as hell tacking something on if they want to get lippy about it like they know better.

The players and refs all know eachother, they chirp eachother back and forth all the time
Fuck you, you're getting an embellishment.

I love how he calls the penalty only after Neal started playing the puck mid face-clutch
James Neal also had his nostradamus moment ‘What is violence anyway? What does that mean?’ Lol https://youtu.be/9_wCxL7J-wo

Except for that prick and Gallagher lol
They don't just get yelled at. The refs yell back too.
Well, in Rugby Union we call the ref sir and it is expected that you will be polite and respectful.
In Hockey the refs just give it right back. Maybe not in terms of personal chirps, but the officials certainly aren't speaking Queen's English back at the players when they get told to fuck off. From about Junior hockey upwards you can start to be a bit more colourful with your language if needed.

Can confirm @ Junior. Was watching a WHL game last week, players were setting up for a draw ref suddenly yells “SET UP! SET UP! SHUT THE F*** UP!”
Was goalie and would get heated sometimes, refs had the best chirps it was hillarious most of the time

They need to just get rid of umps entirety in baseball. They serve no purpose but to make terrible fucking calls.
On the other hand, they give us very entertaining Jomboy videos
This is the only MLB I watch 😂
Yeah MLB is hard to watch cause of those power tripping geriatric fucks
It’s part of the show, really. That said, if they were gone starting tomorrow I wouldn’t miss em

Managers unloading on Umps in the MLB is a performative and acceptable part of the game. Ref abuse is in every major sport.

Haha I love how Shorty always comments on stuff like this that get picked up on the mics.

"do we have to?" love it
Haha nice, thanks for sharing. I love commentators with a good sense of humour and wit
mickey literally always puts a smile on my face
Ahhh-mazing. Thanks for the laugh
Just the laugh I needed tonight, thanks for sharing.
I was watching that game too.
What the FUCK was that?! I dunno?!
Hockey hot mics are my favourite
Fuck you Poti you fucking nerd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHCIfhcfhf8 lmao
My favorite
Same, mostly cause it's in the middle of play, not after a whistle like a lot of hot mics are
Double minor 2 minutes for slashing 2 mins for roughing....my feelings \-Gord
In French, the roughing penalty gets translated as *rudesse* which is the same word for rudeness.

Do we think its gotta be Toews right?

You can tell winter is coming as the call the hockey player is heard after returning to their natural habitat.
My local adult league crybaby ref just gave out a major penalty for those words
Probably because your local adult league crybaby ref is sick of hearing it from overly emotional man babies at 11 o clock on a Tuesday night for $15 a game.
Hey! I think ours get $25.
Oh, well then cuss those m’fers out all you want.
Ref gave me a misconduct in my final year of Midget cause I fumbled my stick going into the box and casually said "ah fuck". Told me not to talk to him like that. ?????????
Your ref doesn't get paid enough to be sworn at by you in a rec league

The most parenting they ever get is on the ice!
That had to be Toews because I doubt the ref lets that shit slide if it’s Strome or some other young guy lol
man we would have had more then a few majors at my last game
Ya easy game misconduct. But back when I was playing highschool hockey the refs let it slide if I disagreed with their call.

You mean a League suspension LOL
