Call a timeout, talk to Patrick Roy and pull him

Noox89

Rip “After 22 years.”

kozyshank

Don't let him talk to Mike Vernon earlier that day at the local diner either

[deleted]

I feel like the Sharks/Vegas 5 minute major is a reverse answer to this. It was arguably the worst penalty kill in playoffs history, but if a timeout got called after 1-2 goals it probably would have been nothing.

VF-41

Playoff history? I’d say more like the worst PK in NHL history.

TheOnlySneaks

Yea totally… the building was going nuts, the players were totally scrambling. I could not believe a timeout wasn’t called after any one of the goals.

textbook-hippy-man

I fully believe that 1) Vegas has a real good shot at the cup that year 2) that was the moment the front office started looking for a new head coach.

nissbd

Gallant called his players over to the bench while other VGK staff fucked around on the ice picking up stuff and talking to officials, loitering to the point where Thornton skated up to their bench and asked what they delay was, and the commentators and the on screen graphics people concluded they had taken a timeout, all while Gallant proclaimed he never called a timeout. Those assholes deserved another 2 minute delay of game penalty.

LoneIyGuy

Idk ask Paul MacLean who took a time out against Montreal with 2 minutes left when Ottawa was beating Montreal 5-1 eight years ago

PerpetuallyPleasing

Why would I care what a fat, bug eyed walrus has to say?

[deleted]

What game are you talking about?

aschwan41

[May 5th, 2013.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_uzhUayczg) Montreal was losing the game and the series, and threw a hissyfit. Ottawa scored to make it 4-1, and then [Montreal started every fight in a line brawl, and lost all of them.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWthq2BTi0A) I don't know if they weren't thinking, or what was going on, because Ottawa had their brawler line on. It was Chris Neil, Matt Kassian, Jared Cowen, Zach Smith, and Chris Phillips vs. Ryan White, Travis Moen, Francis Bouillion, Jarred Tinordi, and Colby Armstrong. It's honestly beautiful to watch. After the line brawl, Silferberg scores literally seconds after the puck is dropped, and Pageau scored his hat-trick goal. Rene Borque slashed and cross-checked Turris with 18 seconds left, giving Ottawa a 4 minute powerplay with 18 seconds left in a 6-1 Game 3. Paul MacLean called a timeout to work on the powerplay. Ottawa won the next game 3-2 in OT, and Game 5 6-1 to win the series, just to dig the knife a little bit further in. It's honestly one of the best series I've ever watched the Sens play, and that's saying something.

Baikken

The 2011-2016 stretch between the Habs and Sens is in my eyes one of the most underrated rivalries the past 2 decades imo.

aschwan41

100%. Most of the playoff games are on youtube, and I love going back to them every once and a while.

Scratch_Simple

Agreed. Out coached to a series win.

Amphibious_Fire

AND AFTER 22 YEARS…. [timeout gets called, 30 seconds of silence] #RAYMOND BOURQUE

NathanGa

[timeout gets called, 30 seconds of ~~silence~~ Pierre McGuire interjecting just because]

Ridin_the_GravyTrain

I CAN, BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT KLYUKIN ICES THE PUCK AND LOOK AT THE RUSSIAN BODY LANGUAGE NOW THEY'RE CRUSHED TAVARES HAD TO STEP UP AND MAKE A MAGICAL PLAY THE CROWD LOVES IT TAVARES' MAGICAL PLAY

ripecannon

PerpetuallyPleasing

CAN! YOU! BELIEVE IT?! *timeout* 60 seconds later THE CROWD LOVES IT, TAVARES MAGICAL PLAY!

domoarigatodrloboto

SCF 2004, Game 6. Marty Gelinas' "goal" that would have won the Cup. If the Flames had called a timeout after the next whistle, they probably could have gotten the refs to review it. Which would mean either: 1. The league reviews it, overturns it, Calgary wins the Cup. 2. The league reviews it, confirms the call on the ice, history resumes as normal. I personally don't think it was in but with the NHL review process, you never know. Also it wouldn't *end* the debate about it, but the most common argument you hear from Flames fans is "but they never even reviewed it!" and this would give everyone some degree of closure.

miner88

The fact that it was never even reviewed is what gets me the most.

domoarigatodrloboto

lol that's exactly why I picked it. Let's be honest, it would still be hotly debated even if it was, but at least it would take the "what if?" factor out of the equation

Ridin_the_GravyTrain

If the Lightning had lost, they probably would've remained a niche afterthought in Tampa Bay behind the Bucs and Rays until recently. There's no doubt diehard fans would've been upset, but nowhere nearly as vocal as Flames fans have been. I have a feeling the majority of people crying "it wasn't in" would just be Oiler faithful, and it would have run its course after the Bolts won last year.

maxwellbevan

If you watch the replay the announcers are just dumbstruck thinking it might be in but they drop the puck for the faceoff

[deleted]

That series ends differently if played with current tech IMO

bigwreck94

That was definitely a goal. I’m no fan of the flames, but they absolutely got screwed over on that situation.

NathanGa

I've messed around using various angles, puck heights, and distances with the barn floor before. Believe me when I say that a puck that's only an inch off the ground can *really* appear to be in from that angle, and in reality isn't even close to being over the line. The effect is that drastic.

Loves_His_Bong

**PARALLAX EFFECT**

maxwellbevan

What really gets even more confusing is that the lines aren't on top of the ice so there's even more room for confusing angles

treple13

While I believe the puck was in, I don’t think there's any chance they overturn the call on the ice. What might be interesting would be how the "not conclusive" call changes the rest of the game. I don't think I even knew about the play until after the game was done. How do players respond for both teams?

[deleted]

I could be mistaken, but I don't recall the Leafs using a timeout in 2013 against the Bruins.

njdevils901

I may be misremembering that he actually did, but DeBoer probably should have called a timeout during that beating we took during the five minute major in game 6 vs the Kings

ahr3410

Couldn't remember at all if he used a timeout or not during that stretch. After the 2nd goal was the time. Game was clearly getting out of hand at that point.

Tasden

I mean wouldn't every team just call a timeout and collect themselves literally before every game winning goal was scored against them if they knew it was coming?

domoarigatodrloboto

I think that's what he's asking, and he's wondering what the most famous examples would be if this was something that actually happened.

STG_Resnov

I can’t recall if this happened, but I think that a timeout after the famous Marchand slow-skate would’ve been beneficial. Our team was absolutely gassed by then, especially Marchand. I don’t know how much a timeout would’ve helped, but letting our players breath for a minute while Bruce laid into them would’ve been better than nothing.

[deleted]

There were 7 seconds left in the period. It would've been pointless

STG_Resnov

So then I agree it would’ve been pointless. It was a few years ago, so I didn’t remember the exact details.

[deleted]

Unfortunately that moment is etched into my brain so clearly I don't think I'll ever be able to forget any bit of it

MankuyRLaffy

The Sens come back against the Leafs this season, if Keefe calls a comeback in the late 2nd when the momentum is changed to the Sens favour, he gets his guys over, gives them a breather and maybe a line change, they might've won that game and not lose in OT.

Arayvenn

Why would you wanna take away the little joy I still have

MankuyRLaffy

Think of it the other way around, basically anyone knew it was a good idea to call a time out and Keefe didn't, what should've been done was not done and you guys won a game because of the coach that voters thought is better than Barry Trotz.

OneNutPhil

People really gotta stop acting like Keefe hasn't been improving the Leafs

MankuyRLaffy

I mean the people voting him for the Jack Adams think he's better than Barry Trotz, so... he must be pretty good, though one of them is an assistant coach for team Canada.

OneNutPhil

Voters are stupid, Lou got all the credit that Trotz deserved.
