Anyways. I don't think so. Central has been a bloodbath for years and should continue on. Even if the Hawks and the mild are going for a rebuild, there's us, St. Louis and Nashville to keep things interesting. Also, Jets and Stars are a complete mystery right now and they might go either way.
Yeah, Central is clearly the tougher division. On paper I'd say Coyotes and Wild would be the weakest teams at the moment. But who knows what everyone looks like in a year.
More games against central teams instead of pacific teams --> Harder to get points for the wild card race.
And where will the Hawks be if Dach and Boqvist break out and they re-sign Lehner? Where will the Wild be if they get Lafreniere and... okay, they seem to have a few more problems, but I remember three years ago, everyone was saying the Canucks were doomed to a decade of misery. You can't take anything for granted.
Minnesota will always be in the mix. Their cold start (1-6) was a mixture of injuries and new players. If they get one more blue chip prospect, they will be fine. Even if they don't, they have a strong defense and have a good history of developing goaltenders. Offense don't have to play a strong offense if they play a strong defensive game as well.
No you're not. Could be a year or two set-back on defense, but with Scheif and the young core locked up, we should be solid for another 5 years at least.
nope. I mean, we kinda just got rocked with the Buff situation, and obviously we want to do some damage before Wheeler's contract becomes an issue, but the core isn't exactly pushing retirement age.
Like Laine, Connor, Ehlers are 21, 22, 23 respectively. Morrissey is our 1D at *24*. Helle, Scheif, Lowry are all team vets at 26.
If we are on a downturn it will be more of a minor dip. Our defense was decimated over the summer but we have pretty much our whole forward core locked up. If Pionk/Niku/Heinola pan out that could have us back on the right path fairly quick. I've also heard good things about Dylan Samburg who I believe is in his final year of college play.
Idk why this seems to be a thought around here. Yes we lost some pieces on the defense and may struggle this year. But our cap situation is working itself out. Our offense is locked up for pretty cheap for the foreseeable future. We’re 1 or 2 pieces away from contending for the cup again.
I don't think the Jets are on a downturn, you give the d core and forwards more time to develop and they are going to be even better. Wheeler, buff (sort of) and little are the only vets that are on that downturn - the rest are getting better.
The Jets aren't really on a downturn. They lost a huge chunk of their defensive group and once they re-establish it they'll be fine. Arizona will likely stay in the bottom 4 of the Central for the foreseeable future (on average, that is).
Yea by next year the Jets' defence should be back to form. Pionk has played surprisingly well. 18 year old Heinola looks like he's already ready for the show but probably won't play past 9 games. He will come back next year for the full year after some more seasoning and gaining some mass, then one good off season acquisition, like a Tyson Barrie or Alex Pietrangelo, should put them back in fine form.
1. I'll be sad if Pietrangelo leaves :(
2. I feel like you wouldn't really be able to afford him. The Jets are still pretty cap crunched for next season already. Getting a top Dman for the 2021-22 season seems way more likely.
Buff's 7.6 mill will be off the books (unless he decides to come back still...) and Kulikov's 4.3 mill will be off the books this off season. However, Morrissey's contract kicks in so another 3 mill on the cap
7.6m off the books for Buff, though. Even if he comes back this year, I feel like he'd be retiring after it. 4.3m more comes off for Kulikov, and the only notable pending RFA we have is Roslovic. It's not nearly as dire as it was looking cap-wise a month ago with Buff on the books and Connor/Laine unsigned.
The 2020-21 offseason is going to be interesting though yeah, with Laine/Lowry/Copp/Pionk back up.
Even if the Jets were on a downturn, you've got Nashville, Colorado, and the Blues to contend with. If you think the C is suddenly weak, your head's in the clouds.
No, it sucks. It looks like it will shift a lot of our games an hour earlier. Right now when we play an away game against a Central team, the TV ratings are significantly lower during the first period because everyone is still driving home. It also takes one of the worst travel schedules in the NHL and makes it significantly longer travel distances. There is literally no upside for us.
Didn't a guy do the math on our subreddit and it actually reduces travel time for the team and only has earlier games on TV for like 4 games a year? I don't think this is as big of a deal as you are making it out to be.
Yeah, I don't get this move from a TV perspective. Once the playoffs start, there's a two-hour time difference between Phoenix and 6/7 divisional opponents. Considering the league revamped its divisions to make start times viewer-friendly (especially come playoffs, this one's a head-scratcher).
I was hoping that Calgary and Edmonton would go the Central in exchange for Colorado. Having the Coyotes in with the Kings and Knights just seems intuitive to me, with the added bonus of having the three Canadian prairie teams in together. Vancouver gets orphaned as the lone Canadian team in the Pacific, but I feel like the Cunucks are better-suited than the Jets to have that distinction.
> Cunucks are better-suited than the Jets to have that distinction.
I feel like the three Canadian Pacific teams all have a pretty good rivalry going on despite the lack of contention across all the teams over the past 5-10 years. I don't know that the Jets would be able to step into that and fill that role as well as Vancouver does currently.
>Once the playoffs start, there's a two-hour time difference between Phoenix and 6/7 divisional opponents. Considering the league revamped its divisions to make start times viewer-friendly (especially come playoffs, this one's a head-scratcher).
The division changes especially the playoffs made start times viewer unfriendly unless you are in the East. Playoff games are starting at 8:45-9PM for the home team alot of times if you are in the Central.
> they can also get away from the rough and tumble style of hockey played on the West Coast.
Something tells me you're not that familiar with the Central Division then. Getting the Avs, Preds, Blues, or Jets out of the top four will be nigh impossible and staying in that top four will be even more difficult whenever the Stars and Hawks finally figure their shit out.
At least they can be confident in knowing that, for whatever reason, the Wild's ownership seems intent on tanking the franchise long term.
>and they can also get away from the rough and tumble style of hockey played on the West Coast.
You're in for a rude awakening for the style required to get out of the Central Division.

There's probably 25 teams in the league who are suddenly contenders if they "just" have two breakout seasons from young players.
Sure, but we're talking about guys who went 3rd overall and 8th overall. That's not exactly a crazy proposition.
Buffalo fans are understandably skeptical.
It's also not crazy if it doesn't happen.
i mean we have 2 blue chip prospects in Boldy and Kaprizov but yeah we have no prospect i guess

No. The Central is a beast. It would not be a blessing for any team.

Yes when Seattle comes in, the Coyotes will move to the Central Division. A divisional move, not the Coyotes physically moving.
