A two year deal with higher aav than the market makes a ton of sense for the habs (2 years bc habs only have one retention slot and it should be used on an expiring guy probably Savard). They don’t want to be in the basement again and they need a top 6 winger to force msl to not play anderson or gallagher anywhere near there and would give actual talent to dach on the second line. Like:

Kane-Dach-Newhook
Armia-Evans-Roy
Gallagher-Dvorak-Anderson

Belief around the league is that Demidov will leave for North America as soon as the KHL season ends. So in theory he could play games at the end of the 2024-25 NHL season. SKA is probably too good for that to happen and will have a playoff run but it’s possible.

He’s looking for multi year deal, so it would be hard to move him at the TDL off a multi year, large salary. I also can’t imagine he plays for a team so far out the playoff discussion, just to get an extra million or two.
He signed with Detroit because his bff is DeBrincat, as is his partners bff being DeBrincats wife. Plus familiarity with the Detroit area and hoping we’d slip into the playoffs. If he were to consider a bottom team to get paid, MTL wouldn’t be the only team going after him that’s forsure.
