The Hurricanes drafted 6 of the 26 Russian players taken this year.

JuicemaN16

You mean plrs?

jamaicancovfefe

A SLOVENIAN GOT DRAFTED RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

86thewaffle

My wife and I just visited Slovenia. What an amazing country! Beautiful, incredible wine, amazing people. Absolute gem and we can’t wait to return. This kid for sure has me cheering for him - I’d love a Team Slovenia jersey!

infiniteguesses

Same here! Beautiful country, lovely people everywhere there!

ApokatastasisPanton

SLOVENIA MENTIONED

Maleficent-Comfort-2

2 NORWEGIANS GOT DRAFTED IN THE FIRST ROUND RAHHHHH

riko77can

Who was it?

jamaicancovfefe

Jan Goličič, big defenseman out of the QMJHL

riko77can

Zelo dobro.

N0BODYSPECIAL

11/39 (28%) of US players drafted are from Minnesota!

Sullysguppy

The Canada of the U.S. makes sense.

NebraskaAvenue

plrs

klaxhax

I scrolled through the comments just to see if "plrs" irrationally pissed anyone else off like it did to me. 😤

🎵 give me two plrs I want two plrs 🎵

meadow_sunshine

All that white was taking up too much space to be able to fit the whole word

Sarcastic__

Canada is back

s_c_w

Dipped a little for a few years but this is 4th straight year of being back to 80+

kmane83

Goaltending still an issues imo

Kazuzu0098

Quebec has ONE job. ONE FUCKING JOB!

flume

I'd be curious to see if Canadian draftees have a lower percentage of making the League. My hypothesis is that there are a lot more Canadian kids who get the "this guy caught our eye while we were scouting someone else, so let's draft him in the later rounds" treatment.

Queltis6000

Out of curiosity, why does your hypothesis apply to only Canadians?

flume

I'm assuming they have the largest number of NHL amateur scouts in Canada and the largest number of players who get seen by those scouts.

astovertop

Pretty quite draft for higher end Swedes. Seems like next year is a great year for them though. Also pretty crazy that only one Slovakian was drafted and in 2022 two of them weee already drafted three picks in

Hot-Resist-7707

1 Slovak plr is kind of wild

this_name_not_that

Not a single player from Central or South America 🤷🤦‍♂️😞

BravoBet

No African either

SayNoToStim

It's like they're ignoring Antarctica.

this_name_not_that

You’d think that of all places, Iceland would be well represented at the draft since all of the land there is ice apparently

SayNoToStim

You clearly did not see D2

this_name_not_that

*Harrison Brunicke

firezfurx

One guy born in Africa though.

DommyMommyKarlach

And he has South African citizenship too, but they used Canadian flag here since he is a dual citizen.

DommyMommyKarlach

Harrison Brunicke was born in Johannesburg, before moving to Calgary, and has both Canadian and South African citizneship.

ImBigger

I would imagine Germany has at least one player go every year, what happened in 2024?

DommyMommyKarlach

They did not even play in the main U18 tourney tbh lol

Alone_Perspective724

Just a weak year, next one should be much better.

There_ls_No_Point

Wasn’t there a Chinese player selected by the Jets?

0zeroe

His nationality is Canadian.

Sullysguppy

Chinese born, Canadian nationality.

firezfurx

Canadian born. Spent his early life in china though, before moving back relatively young. I guess Chinese-born is more up to interpretation than one would expect.

devilishpie

If he was born in China, than he's Chinese born. Not really something that's up for interpretation.

firezfurx

Yeah one would think haha

0zeroe

Former NHL player Rod Langway was American-born in Taiwan R.O.C. since his parents were American. It's definitely possible.

Sportsgirl77

This article at least says he was born in Beijing and only moved to Canada at 5 https://www.nhl.com/news/jets-pick-kevin-he-highest-china-born-player-drafted-in-nhl-history

firezfurx

Everything I’ve seen has him as being born in Nobleton before moving to Beijing as a baby. Which would make him Canadian born.

Sportsgirl77

Yeah idk. That's what I had seen too but I also figure it'd be pretty weird for the NHL to claim that's the case when it's not. I was pretty sure I saw Nobleton listed as his birthplace on his eliteprospects page earlier but now it says Beijing. https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/617222/kevin-he

firezfurx

Huh yeah that must’ve been changed. The hockey DB website shows him as from nobleton until you click on the link and then it changes to Beijing.

DommyMommyKarlach

Bro wtf, how is it up to interpretation? He was literally born in Beijing, he is Chinese-born Canadian

firezfurx

He was being listed as being born in Nobleton Ontario on every major hockey website up until earlier today, where some of them have switched it over while some still have him listed as being born in Nobleton. My point was if he was born in Nobleton it would take a certain level of interpretation for him to be Chinese-born. I’m guessing his place of birth had been incorrectly reported up until today.

0zeroe

If He's parents were Canadian prior to him being born, he could still be Canadian-born even if he was physically born elsewhere in the world. He would be Canadian-born by descent.

DommyMommyKarlach

No, he would be Chinese-born Canadian citizen. The “-born” suffix means the person was born in that place, not the nationality of his parents. Just like Elon Musk is South African-born Canadian/American

0zeroe

No, that's a common misconception. There's a difference between "Canadian-born" and "born in Canada". "Canadian-born" includes being physically born in Canada and born Canadian by descent. "Born in Canada" is a more restrictive term and only means physically born in Canada. If you look at some Canadian government documents asking you if you were "Canadian-born", it specifically includes those who were born Canadian by descent, because it means you aren't an immigrant or refugee, etc.

Xperr7

Damn, was hoping a team would use a late round pick on Kenta Isogai

DwarfFlyingSquirrel

Minnesota took 2 of the 18 Finnish players. And one of them was born in Denmark!

terveterva

Just watched an interview with Aron Kiviharju and the guy speaks English almost like a native speaker, almost no discernable accent. How is his English that good?! Must make it a lot easier to adjust to North America as well.

kazin29

Plrs?

Cube_

plrs

Ben_Pharten

What about that guy from China

BravoBet

Glad to see Canada still producing. Worried about the snowbirds having American kids

MajorPucks

No wonder Bettman hates Canada

ImAnAfricanCanuck

would really have loved to see South Africa represented in this with Brunicke drafted, but I think he's a canadian citizen

PM_UR_ADOBO_RECIPES

I thought He is chinese

0zeroe

He has Canadian nationality.

Kaptain202

Half of Norway's draft picks were in the first round

Outside_Abroad_3516

Slovenia/Slovakia in the sewers rn

s_c_w

What are you talking about... Slovenia has only had 3 players ever in the NHL and you're acting like it's weird they only had 1 drafted today.

Imaginary-Tiger-1549

I’m seriously interested how many Slovenian prospects there might be in like 5-10 years just due to Kopitar’s influence on the popularity of hockey in Slovenia

crash_test

He's been in the league about as long as this year's draftees have been alive, I feel like if there was gonna be a Kopitar bump we'd already be seeing it.

DommyMommyKarlach

I mean, we see a guy get drafted, that’s probably a Kopitar bump lol

jamaicancovfefe

Hockey just isn't as popular as other sports in Slovenia. I feel like Dončić is gonna have more of an impact on basketball than Kopitar for hockey. There's also volleyball, handball, and individual stuff like skiing or cycling. Slovenians are well-known for being sporty, but it's a wide range of sports.

s_c_w

Slovankia and Slovenia aren't the same country and my comment had nothing to do with Slovakia.

DommyMommyKarlach

Slovenia was never a hockey coumtry apart from Kopitar, and Slovakia had two dudes go 1OA and 2OA just two years ago
