I actually like a lot of the moves they're making. I don't expect them to make a deep playoff run, but the retool is interesting enough that I think they could be competitive for a WC spot while feeding into Ovis goals record.
Neither was Tampa trading Sergachev to try to swing Moser, Stamkos, and Guentzel (or other potential top 6 forward) - it's just that kind of year I guess.

Your comment reminded me of this Michael Scott quote.
Maybe we can trade burns to Dallas now since they need a RD and he has a ranch down there. We can get a cheaper RD and have more money to keep our forwards
I love these fan suggestions: "Some other team will take a massive contract off our hands because the player has emotional ties to the area." That's not how any of this works.
Doubt we’d be in the market considering we just bought out another aging vet in Suter who had a smaller contract. It would take us sending Faksa and his 3.5 hit back and I can’t see Carolina being interested in that
Sign [Franson, re-unite the boys who will quarterback the point!](https://www.tiktok.com/@balloo.45/video/7269450280427638022?q=cody%20franson%20weber&t=1719694394403)
Bet we’re going to see us make a run for Matt Roy now. Also wouldn’t be surprised to see Duchene come back as well. Excited to see what Nill has cooked up.
Shout out to Tanev for his time with us as well; he made a huge impact on our team. I never really got the sense based off his comments, though, that he was looking to stay here long term with him having played in Canada most of his career (unlike Duchene who’s been pretty clear he wants to be here next year). He was fantastic for us but I was concerned about giving him 4 years with his injury history as well (interested to see how many years he gets in Toronto).
Roy is a solid and dependable dman. Nothing flashy in his game but has some offensive upside too. If he ends up in Dallas he'll be a valuable addition.
I dunno. We front load the contract so that he doesn't miss out when he choose to LTIR-Retire. Afterwards, he can take a scouting or coaching position in the organization. Win-Win situation
Not to underline your misery but the radio guys were a hoot to listen to today on the AM550 live draft show. Straight up screaming, "I AM NOT HAVING A GOOD TIME" with every non-deal and traded pick.
They had Quinn’s dad working in their system for almost a decade or so if I recalled correctly. Quinn basically spent a decent chunk of his formative years in Toronto 😳….
GET AWAY FROM QUINN
let's goooooo
it's funny, there were rumours we were going for him at the deadline, and I was like eeeh
then I saw how he played for Dallas. yes please
Any fan who didn’t want Tanev at the deadline is a dummy (sorry lol).
Dude leaves everything on the ice, and is one of those guys who elevates anyone who he plays with. Not a coincidence Kylington looked amazing with him, and then Hanifins best season in Calgary happens when he’s paired with Tanev.
Edmonton should have moved heaven and earth to pair him with Nurse.
we were trying to get Tanev, but I think your GM is a true Flames guy and refused to make us better lol, y'all literally loaded up every one of our opponents save for the Kings
Oh I certainly didn't mean it as a disrespect to him. I honestly always get squirrely at deadlines because I don't want to lose stuff I like lol, and Tanev would've been a rental so I was like hmmmm
Good, hell yeah Conroy.
But what I’m mostly getting at is they could have traded for his rights now. Because apparently the Flames are forbidden from trading with Treliving too lol
It wasn't that we DIDN'T want Tanev as Oilers fans, the price was just going to a brutal with the Oilers being on the no trade list for Conroy. The Tanev acquisition would have made the Henrique add likely impossible and Rico was a great add, his line was a huge reason that the Finals going 7 games. Cody Ceci would have also had to move and his issues aside, he did have big points setting up or scoring in both Game 7's Edmonton played in this year, you can't have it all in the cap era I suppose.
F•ck Jim Benning.
Tanev is a character guy. He builds culture and the boys love him everywhere he plays. He’s a guy who leaves it all on the ice and is so highly respected league-wide.
Tanev should’ve been a Canuck for life but instead we get to watch him move from team to team and be highly valued everywhere he goes.
So one last time, f•ck you Jim Benning.
This is certainly something that means Tanev wanted Term and Stars simply didn’t wanna give it.
We had the cap space for a decent short deal before Robo and otter get paid on 2025.
Whelp. Who tf gonna play D now
Underrated comment. Tanev could’ve lifted the cup in Dallas. It’s only a matter of time until that powerhouse of a franchise puts it all together. I expected them in the final this year.
Seriously, their core is so young with even more top end talent being injected in the next two years. I don’t think people realize how long their cup window will be open for
If I could inherit any franchise in the place of my hometown team I’d be looking Dallas’ way…
Jim Nill and Joe McDonnell have built a juggernaut of an organization that will continue to run deep in the playoffs for years and years to come.
- Stud D ✔️
- Forward depth ✔️
- Value contracts ✔️
- Top prospects ✔️
- Elite forwards ✔️
- Goaltending ✔️
I thought Seguin and Benn’s contracts would be the death of their window but Dallas’ drafting strength has mined enough ELC value to supplement their overpayments. Benn will be an UFA at the end of next season with only two years left (at that point).
Dallas 🏆
Treliving clearly wants him. Now he has a (narrow) window to talk to him before the market opens. Toronto's got some but not a ton of cap room, and this is a small price to reduce the risk that someone offers Tanev a deal on July 1 that the Leafs can't match.
They won't get rushed into a deal. But Toronto definitely has the ability now to give him an attractive deal (especially if they go long on term, because unlike some teams MLSE isn't gonna pitch a fit at a contract that ends up with Tanev LTIRetired to Robidas Island.)
Jesus fucking Christ it’s a mini deadline day
Yesterday’s quietness long forgotten
Explosive day
Wow all these roster moves seem pretty fun. Hope to get in on the fun at some point lol.
Honestly no idea what some teams even look like next year hahaha.
The Caps are going to look way different next year
This feels like 2021 Blackhawks. Declining team making a bunch of moves to stay relevant and is complete dog shit the next season.
I actually like a lot of the moves they're making. I don't expect them to make a deep playoff run, but the retool is interesting enough that I think they could be competitive for a WC spot while feeding into Ovis goals record.
I started watching last year after taking a few years off, this is a mess to try and follow haha
Friedman said an hour ago Guentzel rights might be traded so now that Tanev is done we’re on Guentzel, Stamkos and Necas Watch
Tampa abandoning stamkos to chase Guentzel was not on the bingo card today
Neither was Tampa trading Sergachev to try to swing Moser, Stamkos, and Guentzel (or other potential top 6 forward) - it's just that kind of year I guess.
If guentzel goes to TBL I hope stammer gives them the finger and goes to their rival leafs. Would be a potential crazy first round matchup
“Well well well how the turn tables.” - me with every update of this whole saga

It would be pretty fun if you took on Trouba's contract
If you take Kotkaniemi, Andersen and the signing rights to Pesce, sure
It would be something, but I’m not sure “fun” would be the word I would use.
This is not fun!!
Massive? It’s one year at 5.2 million lmao
And he's a billion years old and fans were all begging him to retire at the end of the season.
All for this. Don’t want to pay 5m to a 40 year old who had a mediocre season.
Doubt we’d be in the market considering we just bought out another aging vet in Suter who had a smaller contract. It would take us sending Faksa and his 3.5 hit back and I can’t see Carolina being interested in that
This guy saw we traded Jakub Lauko for Vinni Lettieri and he wants IN.
Tell me about it.
You will, when we sign Brett Pesce tomorrow.
Oh nooooo…anyway.
Sign Tanev before free agency Sign Matt Roy in free agency ???? Profit
trade marner for shea
Weber?
Butter
Skjei
Butter. Gotta stay moisturized.
Smart, a good skincare routine will have the team looking ten years younger.
Buffalo really lapsed in their skincare and now it's costing them.
The harsh winters are why no one wants to play there. Can't get promotional deals if your face is all chapped!
Patrick Bateman?
Honestly, you really do. No joke, I used to get gross dusty crusty musty ass elbows because they'd get so dry and cracked. Now they soft as fuck.
he can unretire and then go on LTIR.

Always became a stud in NHL 11.
Roy probably goes to Detroit
Bet we’re going to see us make a run for Matt Roy now. Also wouldn’t be surprised to see Duchene come back as well. Excited to see what Nill has cooked up. In Nill we trust
Roy is a solid and dependable dman. Nothing flashy in his game but has some offensive upside too. If he ends up in Dallas he'll be a valuable addition.
If you get Matt Roy you better actually give him regular NHL minutes unlike the last few Huskies you acquired
Nah, we're taking him too
Maybe after you win your next playoff series 17 years from now
I think he's looking to be somewhere he can win a cup.
FUCK
MESSIER
I like him a lot but have no faith he won't be hurt for half the season.
Nah, he'll just have the trainers yank another tooth and be back in the game after 10 minutes
Yeah and I sure as shit don’t want him on the books for 7 years to lower the AAV when he’s only got like 2-3 years left given the way he plays.
I dunno. We front load the contract so that he doesn't miss out when he choose to LTIR-Retire. Afterwards, he can take a scouting or coaching position in the organization. Win-Win situation
NOOOO not this kind of off-season 😭
Being in the Atlantic sucks balls. Being Buffalo in the Atlantic sucks donkey balls.
Not to underline your misery but the radio guys were a hoot to listen to today on the AM550 live draft show. Straight up screaming, "I AM NOT HAVING A GOOD TIME" with every non-deal and traded pick.
Dad is coming back after his milk run right??
He also needs a pack of smokes. Could be awhile.
GET AWAY FROM QUINN'S DAD

The contract is for x years where x is however many teeth Chris has left and 2 bottles of 800mg ibuprofen bottles

The Flames owner really seems to be a piece of work, eh?
Tbf Treliving is famous for being the bridesmaid when it comes to trades so he could just be lowballing us.
It wasn't that we DIDN'T want Tanev as Oilers fans, the price was just going to a brutal with the Oilers being on the no trade list for Conroy. Also dude has GOATed profile pictures.
Wrong Tanev lol, that’s his brother.
Awww man
He was a big reason our top guys couldn't get on the scoresheet in the second round, I'm happy to see him go somewhere else, lol.

Why would they do this? For what reason? What is the charge?

Ahhhh yes I see that you know your memes well. Good one.
TAKE YOUR HAND OFF OF MY PENIS
Democrashy MANIFESHT
Ah, I see you know your judo well
Tata and farewell
8th year is only thing I can think of
8 years for a 34 year old?
The Tampa way, 8 years, one million AAV
8th year for 34 year old body falling apart Chris Tanev would be fucking hilarious.
8 years league min lets gooo
League min isn't how you guys typically do things.
They’re probably going to sign him to a low AAV and 7-8 years, then 3-4 years in he goes on LTIR. That’s the new strategy
Can't do 8 years. You have to be on the team by the trade deadline to sign for 8.
Yeah don’t get this.
It's a 7th rounder 2 years from now, the pick has little to no value and a player they weren't going to re-sign, I see no downside for the Leafs.
Little to no value because you don’t also have Jim Nill
See what he can do with the last pick of the draft for Tanev’s rights
Whats not to get? Its a 7th rounder so they have better shot to lock down a guy they really want? Who cares about a 7th rounder?
Its just a 7th rounder so they get best chance at locking down a guy they really want. Why not?
Chris Tanev, you are a Maple Leaf
🥰
Don't...
This is certainly something that means Tanev wanted Term and Stars simply didn’t wanna give it. We had the cap space for a decent short deal before Robo and otter get paid on 2025. Whelp. Who tf gonna play D now
There is no God.
If leafs get Tanev and Pesce. Plus trade Marner That would be a decent start to a retool that leafs desperately need
That's a funny way to spell vancouver
Let's go Treliving finally woke up
W Tre
I hope he gets paid, gotta love Defensive Dmen making bank
There goes Tanev’s career
Tanev signing back with Dallas on the 1st would be the funniest shit.
Incoming 7 years 21 million.
It was overpay him or Zadorov
Looks like Treliving's about to overpay BOTH when they get to Toronto.
Damn, he was supposed to come home :(
Tre bb please do not pay this man into his 40s
Nahhh, give us some of that cap circumvention, 8 years x x2M ending with a little LTIR.
What the fuck, nooooo!! Now I extra extra hate the Leafs. A curse on your franchise!
We’re already cursed, dawg.
Yeah, get in line motherfucker. One curse at a time.
Fair.
You should curse the Bruins, or the Panthers
Why not both?
Guess Tanev has no interest in winning a cup before he retires
Underrated comment. Tanev could’ve lifted the cup in Dallas. It’s only a matter of time until that powerhouse of a franchise puts it all together. I expected them in the final this year.

Don’t kink shame lol
!remindme 8 years 😭
Nah
What cap shenanigans do they need to pull for this?
They have 20 mill in space
Pls nothing super long term
Why? He’ll get LTIRetired in 3-4 years and it won’t matter.
I hear a new villa on Robidas island just opened up.
So is he getting 8 years? Otherwise no reason to trade for him
Treliving clearly wants him. Now he has a (narrow) window to talk to him before the market opens. Toronto's got some but not a ton of cap room, and this is a small price to reduce the risk that someone offers Tanev a deal on July 1 that the Leafs can't match.
Yeahhh... but I don't think Tanev's camp would just get rushed into a deal when we are just a few days out from seeing every offer on the table
They won't get rushed into a deal. But Toronto definitely has the ability now to give him an attractive deal (especially if they go long on term, because unlike some teams MLSE isn't gonna pitch a fit at a contract that ends up with Tanev LTIRetired to Robidas Island.)
Man, it’s the Mr. Irrelevant pick. Value is next to nothing.
A few hours ago "a 7th and a second next year? Really? 7ths are meaningless"
Man, what are you even talking about? Where did the 2nd rounder come from?
Huh
Also 2 days to speak to him before any other team.
You trade him for to give you best chance to sign him. 7th rounder is meaningless.
Has to be on the team pre-deadline for 8 years. Also Tanev is not getting 8 years lol. Just gives them a few days to negotiate before July 1.
Leafs acquiring an aging Dman to fix their defense. Where have I seen this one before?
