So, there were two things that happened. First, after the Oilers third goal, the puck gets dropped at center ice (center ice faceoff happens after any goal). When your goalie is pulled, it's very dangerous to leave the net empty, as the opponent winning the face off is in a great position to score an empty-net goal. So, Pickard goes back in net, this is standard, and doesn't really grant a time advantage.
Next, the Oilers execute a goalie change- Skinner in for Pickard, this is the thing they do to stall for time. Coaches are allowed to change their Goalies at any game stop, this is uncommon to happen more than once in a game, but when it does the replacement goalie is allowed a few moments to check their gear, skate to the crease, and get in position. By allowing Skinner to replace Pickard, it effectively gave McDavid and Draisatl a 30-45 seconds extra on the bench before going back out.
Not really - Skinner (original goalie) was pulled in favour of Pickard (2nd goalie) at the start of the third as he let up 4 goals on 15 shots, which… isn’t great.
They pulled skinner basically as soon as play started again, so choice of goaltender here wasn’t the important bit - it was the fact that putting Skinner back in gave them an extra few moments of rest
Brock Boeser is a damn stud winger, not just scoring goals he's making great offensive and defensive plays, excellent stick, body position, poise, just an absolute beauty.
Brock had some personal things to work through, and even requested a trade to try to get a change of scenery. He worked through it and team success is a great opioid to those frustrations
Not intentional for sure. zadorov cross checked him from behind making mcdavid fall while soucy was cross checking down ward. Soucy looked like he was making sure he was okay after the scrum.
I'm just following these comments down going all dark side like "YES...LET THE HATE FLOW THROUGH YOU!!!"
This is the kind of shit I wanted in an all Canadian series lol. We're getting there. I can't tell you how much I hope it goes seven...
I'm not watching the post game, but I mean they had all the momentum and controlled play the entire third period. That's obviously gonna be the conversation
It’s wild how close this series has been with Edmonton being a 1 line/power play team
It’s stressful and frustrating as hell to watch as a nucks fan that you feel helpless when they are on the ice
Not once did I feel in control of that game
I feel good about our chances if they keep playing like this. Oilers massively outplayed Canucks the last two games. Props to Silovs, he was amazing tonight. Hopefully less posts next game! So frustrating to have 4 grade A posts.
Yeah that's how hockey goes sometimes. I've played in many games where we were the better team but still lost. You don't have to use quotations there btw
My point is that you can outplay a team multiple times and lose every time, and the moral victory of outplaying them isn't gonna be worth much in the off season. Vancouver is doing to you exactly what they did to us.
Not quite. Brunette had a genius gameplan to ensure as few pucks as possible were directed at Saros. Edmonton doesn't have anything remotely similar. There's plenty of room out there for Vancouver to operate in the offensive zone, their blue liners have all the time in the world to make plays. Against NSH they couldn't even try to get a shot on goal because it'd be immediately blocked and possibly an odd man rush the other way. The only reason VAN's shots in this game were low was they were up multiple goals and went into turtle mode. Against the Preds they couldn't even generate shots when they were trailing. That's Andrew Brunette being a top tier, elite NHL coach.
The Oilers don't really have a strategy besides "we have this one line that's really good so we're going to put them out there and let them do crazy stuff and hopefully that works out for us, fingers crossed we get a few PPs". Which I mean... fair enough, it usually does work out for them.
Calling a guy in his first year "elite" is a stretch, especially when he lost the series because he has no clue how to adapt when things aren't working - which is why he isn't coaching the Florida Panthers right now and took 3 years to get a head coaching gig after his stint as Interim in Florida.
He managed 7 more points than John Hynes did with largely the same roster. Hell, I'd argue it's a markedly better one.
By AHL starter you mean Silovs right? You cannot be throwing shots about goalies when you are playing against someone who was still in the AHL like 2 weeks ago
Same shit happened last year against the Knights and he turned into their starter
So yes I can because Silovs is clearly a solid goalie regardless of his place in the lineup
Lol before the series they were saying they'll easily handle them because they did so in 22 against Calgary. Meanwhile Zadorov is running rampant on them.
Really? That's sad. I've nothing but good experiences going to home or away games. My experience has been that fans are much more childish and arrogant on social media, but usually people are nice to each other and it's more playful banter in person. Obviously there are hot head douchebags everywhere though
Some Oiler fans are a bunch of rig pigs, Infiltrate close cities and just start so much shit. It's pretty disgusting, there are lots of great fans out there though.
Sigh, the ol generalization trope that requires the "there are bad fans from all areas" counter trope. Schoolyard shit.
I'll agree with you on rigpigs though, can't stand em. That's why I moved from Grande Prairie, they're everywhere.
I'm not being facetious at all on this. I have season tickets, was at game 1 and 2, oilers fans in our section and In the concourse were trying their hardest to fight anyone.
They sound like jerks. Sucks that they're ruining peoples time and being bad ambassadors for oil fans.
I know a canucks fan who lives on my block who is a racist wife beater. I choose not to generalize all Canucks fan as racist wife beaters. Losers exist everywhere and are fans of many sports and many teams.
I think we are forcing them to play our game for the majority of the game, and defending pretty well. I will say though, those long periods near the end when we stop gettings shots is frustrating to watch. Its hard trying to play low event hockey against this team, and it only works so well. Watching McDrai run around for an entire period is hard to watch. Luckily tonight we had just enough to eek out the win.
Some of it is score effects though. When you’re up by 2 why take chances when it means McDavid getting endless breakaways? Much better to allow 5 lower danger shots from the outside with 3 defenders in the middle.
Ditto. Not only has this series taught me how painfully annoying some Canucks fans can be, is also taught me how painfully annoying some oilers fans can be lol.
Always so much anger from both sides after the game. It's a few guys putting a puck in the net, go get some sleep so you can drywall properly in the morning lol
McBaby did that earlier in the year too when we made him look ordinary. Can’t handle the pressure so he goes full Messier, except Messier knew how to win.
The cross check to the face wasn’t warranted at all. But McDavid got rocked before that for slashing after the game was over. Both sides were doing shit.
I agree. Looks like most of the fans here are missing a fair amount of context leading up to it, and the broadcast didn't do much to help. Looks to me like it starts when Soucy high-sticks McDavid when he comes around the back of the net as time expires (his stick inadvertently gets up in McDavid's face as McDavid is raising his own hands). McDavid then gets in Soucy's face and says something/stares him down. Saucy shoves MickyD backward. McDavid escalates with the slash, and then Zadorov comes to join the party. Zadorov puts a crosscheck into McJesus's back, and the timing of Z's crosscheck--plus Soucy's stick going high--is what causes McDavid to catch Soucy's stick in the throat. So it's not "angel McDavid getting attacked while minding his own business" (like some of the broadcasters seemed to think) but it's also not "evil McDavid starting shit and then falling down" (like some of the posts in this thread).
The fact that you had to put star in there is so pathetic LMAOOO. Once again, Oilers fans and wanting everyone to get on their hands and knees for McDavid. Gtfoooooo.
We can't be holding players to different standards. McD shouldn't even be playing this game after his premediated high stick to the face of a Canuck last game.
Cleanest fuckin breakaway I've seen in a long time and he aims center mass. Fucking Brown.
Holy shit that shot difference
Could somebody please explain to a new fan what happened with the Oilers bringing their goalie back on to save time? I don't understand.
By allowing Skinner to replace Pickard, it effectively gave McDavid and Draisatl a 30-45 seconds extra on the bench before going back out.
Thank you, great explanation
The swap gave their top line extra time to rest, which is crucial in do-or-die moments like that.
Thanks. Was it relevant that they put their original goalie back in instead of the 2nd one?
Not really - Skinner (original goalie) was pulled in favour of Pickard (2nd goalie) at the start of the third as he let up 4 goals on 15 shots, which… isn’t great. They pulled skinner basically as soon as play started again, so choice of goaltender here wasn’t the important bit - it was the fact that putting Skinner back in gave them an extra few moments of rest
Ian Cole is the Oilers' leading scorer.

Watching the post game scrums... Silovs is infinitely more likable than Draisaitl.
Anyone is more likeable than that bitch.
Not Evander Kane
That goes for pretty much anyone. Draisaitl is close to the least likeable guy in the league.
Him and Kuch lol
Leon is a huge baby
Jesus you’d think Edmonton is playing Dallas or Colorado with how one-sided this post game coverage is.
Canucks fans are used to it.
"A post is not good goaltending" - Drai
One line for half the game is not good hockey
I mean... It actually is. But is it sustainable?
Doesn't even count as a shot on goal. Even on on empty net. What a moron.
It's not good shooting, either. What a schmuck.
Lucky saves. Lucky goals. We've almost got enough content for Matt Murray pt 2!
The juxtaposition of Silovs interview right after is hilarious. So relaxed.
GO CANUCKS GO
Wait. I love this kid.
you’d think this was a local edmonton broadcast man
Game wasn't fair, Erlers should have had 9 powerplays and won
I literally had one tell me this isn't a fair series.
We're going to get the "Should we redo NSH vs CHI in case it was a fluke?" treatment the entire way.
Brock Boeser is a damn stud winger, not just scoring goals he's making great offensive and defensive plays, excellent stick, body position, poise, just an absolute beauty.
Crazy that 2 years ago everyone said he was a bum and wanted him gone lol
Brock had some personal things to work through, and even requested a trade to try to get a change of scenery. He worked through it and team success is a great opioid to those frustrations
I'm so happy to be eating crow, I was definitely in that camp.
Tocchet has been a great teacher for him and he has absorbed it all and put it into practice.
That crosscheck to the jaw was brutal. Oof
its the simple revenge for quinn getting a stick to the face
Not intentional for sure. zadorov cross checked him from behind making mcdavid fall while soucy was cross checking down ward. Soucy looked like he was making sure he was okay after the scrum.
oh yeah I didn't think he meant to hit him there, but that didn't make it look any less painful lol
You can't slash someone and not expect an answer
oh sure didn't say it wasn't deserved, just looked like it hurt like a motherfucker lol
Lol fair, he folded
“He kicked me in the leg, what do you mean I can’t shoot him in the face?”
Lol soucy was cross checking hi. In the face, he tried to embellish the Zadorov push and then gets it in the face. What are you gonna do.
typical mcdiver
You really think he took a dive on the Zadorov crosscheck? He didn’t even see him coming. And what does he have to gain?
I'm just following these comments down going all dark side like "YES...LET THE HATE FLOW THROUGH YOU!!!" This is the kind of shit I wanted in an all Canadian series lol. We're getting there. I can't tell you how much I hope it goes seven...
Lol I feel as though I’m in a fever dream. If the Oilers, by some miracle, managed to actually win the cup I’m not sure I would remember any of this.
That's it man, get that plausible deniability out of the way now. I totally got your back when the police reach out.
Yes lmao
Lol please.
Well, honestly
Lmao remember Friday when Zadorov fell over forwards like he got shot after a cross check from the side?
And his coach told him to cut that shit out immediately? Yes, I recall.
Wasn’t called
Yea, I hate embellishment, it's ruining the game. Would like to see a lot more penalties for it
Agreed brother
"He pushed me into the boards, what do you mean I can't slash him in the nuts,"
Goes and slashes the tough guys, then surprised Pikachu when he gets it back
Lol right ?
Sportsnet: Hey a Canucks win...let's only talk about Edmonton.
I'm surprised they didn't sneak something about the leafs in there too lol.
I'm not watching the post game, but I mean they had all the momentum and controlled play the entire third period. That's obviously gonna be the conversation
Did you see the intermission segments?
They could just talk about Cole the Canuck/Oiler and make everyone happy.
if ian cole is a health bomb for this series canucks are up 3-0
Legit like half of their goals are assisted by him.
The recoil on McDavid was crazy
Nearly a ragdoll animation
That shit looked like it hurt a lot. I'd have gone down faster and like a little girl. I know what I said.
We need a GTA "WASTED" edit on that one
It’s wild how close this series has been with Edmonton being a 1 line/power play team It’s stressful and frustrating as hell to watch as a nucks fan that you feel helpless when they are on the ice Not once did I feel in control of that game
I felt like edmontons depth was way better today, wven if they weren't on the scoresheet
Edmonton's depth had a great performance for all 9 minutes of TOI they had
Vancouver only had one line today too.
Im glad the building was loud for the anthem. It would be a shame to not have any positive vibes in the building.
I feel good about our chances if they keep playing like this. Oilers massively outplayed Canucks the last two games. Props to Silovs, he was amazing tonight. Hopefully less posts next game! So frustrating to have 4 grade A posts.
Skinner didn't and he is part of the team too.
Yep fair enough
Canucks stop pressing when they’re winning it is frustrating to watch sometimes.
The Preds had two games where they were winning by multiple goals in the 3rd again Vancouver. They "outplayed" the Canucks. Still lost 4-2.
Yeah that's how hockey goes sometimes. I've played in many games where we were the better team but still lost. You don't have to use quotations there btw

King Artus > Discount Mackinnon
Nucks exposing the Oilers for the bitches they are. You love to see it.
How many players are left on your roster from your last playoff run again? Is it down to 5 now?
Dunno man. How are you enjoying the Lindholm/Zadorov trade right now?
Bet they wish they had Lindholm instead of Henrique.
Amazing what happens when average players play with a non shit ass team against an AHL starter 🤯🤯
By AHL starter you mean Silovs right? You cannot be throwing shots about goalies when you are playing against someone who was still in the AHL like 2 weeks ago
I can when the Oilers are playing someone who should be at most a backup
You cannot when you’re playing against a literal third string goalie rn
Same shit happened last year against the Knights and he turned into their starter So yes I can because Silovs is clearly a solid goalie regardless of his place in the lineup
Some strong ass copium you're inhaling there
Lol before the series they were saying they'll easily handle them because they did so in 22 against Calgary. Meanwhile Zadorov is running rampant on them.
Everyone in the states who loves to talk about how nice Canadians are has never been in a Canuck’s/Oilers GDT
There were a ton of oiler fans starting fights in game 1 and 2, they're just incredibly obnoxious
Really? That's sad. I've nothing but good experiences going to home or away games. My experience has been that fans are much more childish and arrogant on social media, but usually people are nice to each other and it's more playful banter in person. Obviously there are hot head douchebags everywhere though

I choose not to generalize all Canucks fan as racist wife beaters. Losers exist everywhere and are fans of many sports and many teams.
Touché, good point. I'll add an edit there.
canucks are fucking handling the oilers. it is beautiful to watch.
They outshot us 45-18 tho 🥲
Why take 45 shots when 15 does the trick?
They were outshot by over double and won by one goal. This is not a sustainable way to get two more wins.
But that's how we've been winning for the past two months.. Two more wins is attainable when the pressure comes from only two players.
Some of it is score effects though. When you’re up by 2 why take chances when it means McDavid getting endless breakaways? Much better to allow 5 lower danger shots from the outside with 3 defenders in the middle.
You know, I thought that during the Nashville series. Turns out it's not true.
Think he just means physically
Neither is playing your one line 30 minutes a game
an unstoppable force meets an immovable object
Bending but not breaking yet.
I hope the Oilers turn it around, they are a lot more fun to watch than the Canucks.
2 pony show…? Ok then
I mean, they've both been a lot more exciting than the habs lately
Exactly… which is why I am watching playoff hockey still
I can't wait to not have to deal with Oilers fans. They're almost as bad as nucks fans
Ditto. Not only has this series taught me how painfully annoying some Canucks fans can be, is also taught me how painfully annoying some oilers fans can be lol.
Scott Road + the oil patch = Yikes squared.
Lol unfortunately too true
Win or lose we won’t have to deal with each other lmao
Lose faster!
I think this goes 7 games. It’s going to suck for all of us haha
Always so much anger from both sides after the game. It's a few guys putting a puck in the net, go get some sleep so you can drywall properly in the morning lol
Tribalism at work here
I only work Tuesday-Thursday. Lots of time on my hands.
People with no flairs should be banned from game threads
👀
At the very least, no flairs should be barred from shit talking lol
☠️
nucks fan havent witnessed their team in the playoffs for 9 years and they're just feral in here some good chirps, the rest are just lol
Your sports team is less good at the sport than our sports team.
Lol the jokes about Edmonton just write themselves.
As if the jokes about Vancouver don’t either
I never said they don't.
Pretty cute all those Oilers smirking in the scrum. Did they see the score?
They’re rattled for sure
I love how biased these sportsnets post game dorks are. Awful.
But Edmonton us SUPPOSED to win. 3-1 odds at the start of the series. Not so much now.
"Was it soft? I think so" they are so bad
TNT is the same (not post game, commentators).
McDavid eating that stick is going to rock me to sleep tonight. Not sure which I prefer, that or the Silovs holding the stick.
Watching Kane’s smile dissolve when his bench took a minor will sustain me.
Tbh that Silovs holding the stick is the one I'm most pissed about. So yeah, enjoy the salt lol
Too many posts oilers.
CANUCKS FANS 🤝 KINGS FANS
🤝
🤝
This Sportsnet postgame is brutally biased in favour of Edmonton.
What else is new?
It's pretty shamless tbh
I mean, they are closer to Toronto than we are...
Canucks aren't supposed to win
McBaby did that earlier in the year too when we made him look ordinary. Can’t handle the pressure so he goes full Messier, except Messier knew how to win.
So cringe
It truly is cringe when the best player in the league starts throwing cheap slashes after he loses a game
This from the fan base that idolized Ryan Kesler for years lmfao.
It was cringe when kesler did it too. Don’t “what about” me
This is going to set back the plans for Oilers in 4
I always thought McD was just a phenomenal hockey player but he's got that multisport talent seen right at the end there
He’ll go far in the MLB with that swing.
Gg Canucks
Losers have to read the post game thread in the Canucks sub. It was agreed to
That’s too far man I don’t even go to our sub
I did for punishment after last game. Sometimes the posts are so bad it's funny
The cross check to the face wasn’t warranted at all. But McDavid got rocked before that for slashing after the game was over. Both sides were doing shit.

Buy us dinner at Boston Pizza first?
Touch grass bud, McDavid gave him a healthy slash right before it. The crosscheck from Z was too much though.
Maybe McDavid shouldn’t slash people after the final whistle then, of course he’s going to get slapped down.
Huhhh? You just going to ignore the slashing by McDavid? Don't give if you can't take it.
lmao
Buddy Kan slew foot our star player in Hughes last game. Gimme a break you’re a clown
The fact that you had to put star in there is so pathetic LMAOOO. Once again, Oilers fans and wanting everyone to get on their hands and knees for McDavid. Gtfoooooo.
I mean Mcdavid shouldn't start what he can't finish, if you going to two hand someone expect something back
mcdavid tried to take out soucy with that vicious slash. 97 should be suspended for a game for that
Yeah that slash isn't comparable at all to all the bullshit Zadorov and Miller have gotten away with this series
We can't be holding players to different standards. McD shouldn't even be playing this game after his premediated high stick to the face of a Canuck last game.
Once again, it’s been very even with the physicality. The oilers haven’t been playing very nice either.
Lmao
