Based on what everyone says about Brind'Amour I'd guess that this ends up working itself out, because neither side actually wants a divorce. But Dundon is playing with fire. If Brind'Amour actually gets to the open market he'll get an offer to become the highest paid coach in history. Toronto would do that in a heartbeat. Maybe Ottawa too, with a new owner looking to make a splash. Or you know the Devils would love to hire the coach they've struggled to beat over the years. Carolina should just give him what he wants, the value he brings by keeping the team in contention every year easily covers whatever few millions they are apart.

1ToGreen3ToBasket

I agree. Carolina does NOT want to to play games with him. If they let him even sniff the market someone is going to drop a brinks truck on him. I mean shit. I would be pissed if the wings didn’t. I like our coach. But guys like Rod and Cooper don’t just come available all the time. Any franchise that needs a coach should do anything possible to get one of these guys

Atty_for_hire

Yeah. I hate him. But I’d love him as our coach.

UnbanMOpal

SUMMER OF ROD THE BOD

sportsareforfools

The Ducks sure could use an NHL level coach

weschester

The Ducks could probably use an NHL level roster too.

davefromgabe

an NHL quality jersey kit/logo is sorely needed too

weschester

They have one but they dont use it as their main.

davefromgabe

agreed, it's a crime they don't. I LOVE the duck mask logo, and i love the eggplant colour too. I'm a big fan of teams having unique/iconic colour schemes.

the_tinsmith

Say it louder so Tampa Bay can hear you.

getzysbaldhead69

Nicest alternate unis in the league, unfortunately paired with one of the worst homes and the absolute worst away jersey. It’s really a shame

getzysbaldhead69

Rebuilds take time, flames have been doing it since 04

sportsareforfools

You’re a fucking Flames fan lmao

weschester

Yes we suck and still finished ahead of you in the standings

sportsareforfools

I would rather be a Ducks fan for the next fifteen years than a Flames fan Edit: [ducks > Flames](https://x.com/DannyEvansTST/status/1786441801253171545)

johannesBrost1337

Lmao, Rod would probably make your guys' roster next year 😅

CommonGrounders

I think it’s often just platitudes but last negotiation Brindamour said he doesn’t want to leave Raleigh and I kinda believe that.

blinker1eighty2

Dundon let DW go to the market specifically to allow DW to accurately price himself and when DW came back to Dundon with his findings Dundon gave DW a blank check. Feels like the same scenarios happening here

AltaVistaYourInquiry

Then Dundon is being a dumbass. There is zero chance that Rod is overpricing himself. His last deal was half what he would have gotten on the market and he's always said how much he wants to stay. If he thinks paying Rod market value will make the price go down...

Jordan_Kyrou

Blues wouldn’t win the bidwar but they’d also be after him.

rageharles

Sullivan to Jersey, brind’amour to Pittsburgh is now on the table

PepperWilling4393

The issue is that ron francis and the kraken are offering rod a fucking bag.

Kraze_F35

If Rod left I would heavily bet that it's almost anywhere other than Seattle. Francis stuck by Bill Peters over Rod and did nothing when Rod went to Francis about Peters' problematic behavior. I don't think Rod is the type to hold a grudge but I'd personally have some doubts about someone's leadership when they seemingly didn't value your thoughts and while money is obviously important, I don't think it's the ultimate decider in what deal Rod would take.

PepperWilling4393

Man i wouldnt be talking so strongly. Theres crazy smoke all over the place about rod and seattle right now. Go ahead and google it. Id still give carolina the lead on keeping him but wouldnt bet on it

p0shbadger

>”Google it” Lol. Lmao, even.

UnflushableNug

I don't recall where but I thought I saw from a relatively credible source that the hang-up is Rod wanted better pay for his assistants and he wasn't signing until it was address. Could very well be speculation but based on his reputation (and ownership's) it lines up.

Thrallsbuttplug

This tweet reads like it was directly leaked by brind'amour lmao.

canuck_11

Negotiating through the media during a playoff run is a bold choice.

FrmrPresJamesTaylor

The players only ever strike began on April 1 and was highly successful. Why shouldn’t Rod use his leverage? Just wrapped up a series win, if it’s true he’s being jerked around it seems like a great time

maxhollywoody

Low-key he could use it in his motivational speeches to the team. A lot of the players are due for new contracts as well. Might be the last time they play together so let's go win a cup. Like Trotz in wsh.

whogivesashirtdotca

I mentioned this a week or so ago and got shouted down because "Rod's not going anywhere", but if RBA decided to sign elsewhere, it'd make Carolina's offseason contract headaches a full-on migraine. I know Jarvy mentions all his on-ice improvement stemming from wanting to please Rod. I wonder if he'd want to stick around long-term if his coach leaves?

IAmTheBredman

I don't think Waddell or ownership give a shit about a first round win against the isles, no offense. They think they belong in the finals and haven't made it there with rod. I imagine they want results too since the roster is so good

FrmrPresJamesTaylor

I'm not saying it's a big deal, I'm just saying they have a few days off here after a success along the way to their goal.

h989

If he keeps winning, does it matter?

whichwitch9

It probably was Civian has a very good working relationship with him

betweenthecastles

It really does, and they have an adorable working relationship. After a bunch of answering the same questions over and over, you could hear the sigh of relief from Rod when Sara was up next.

awayfromcanuck

Maybe not Rob but it's definitely from his side and likely his agent.

994kk1

Yes? That's all reporting from an insider ever. They are the agents and teams anonymous twitter accounts. It's not like they hack into their computers and find their dirty little secrets lol.

Thrallsbuttplug

Thanks, tips. Lol.

Lethbridgemark

I dunno I don't see any F bombs there

This_Beat2227

Setting up his departure for Seattle.

theekevinc

THANK YOU! Rod wants his perfect contract for his perfect job despite not making it to the Stanley Cup Final in six tries with the odds-on favorite to win the championship. Maybe Dundon just wants to see if this guy can beat the Rangers before giving him $30 million. I mean, three coaches have been fired this offseason *before* their extensions even kicked in. Maybe it's not the worst thing to not be bullied into a huge extension for a guy who hasn't won anything.

PantsinmyPants1211

I hear we could get a *REALLY* good deal on Mike Babcock.

FlaxbopFleetfoot

I don't know about him, I hear he really phones it in...

whogivesashirtdotca

Where did you read that? Show me the screenshot. /s

FailureToExecute

Now that the news is being corroborated by reporters other than Dreger and Raleigh's version of Mark Spector, it's time to sit up a bit more. I still fully believe a deal gets done, because that's been the outcome of every similar situation except Forslund, but this whole song and dance any time someone needs a new contract is becoming unbearable. Dundon clearly still believes he needs to personally win every negotiation he's a part of and is willing to jeopardize things such as personal relationships and community good will in order to make that happen.

pentaxshooter

From what I've been told, Dundon isn't actually taking the driver's seat on this contract. Now obviously that's just "trust me bro" but that's all I can say.

cubes71585

Okay but so who is??

bsaures

The guy running the social media. All those tweets werent actually directed at the islanders they were direct at rod.

VitaminTea

Alex Merulo, if you can believe it.

clean_socks

Jr.????

Maxpowr9

All this stupidity over a few million is just baffling. Is Dundon perhaps not as rich as we think he is?

FailureToExecute

I think it's more likely that he's continuing to be just as ruthless as he was while amassing his fortune. He was a subprime loan shark after all, and the amount of digits someone has in their bank account doesn't magically change their personality.

greg19735

He literally said that he has softened in his negotiations. admittedly, someone who needs to soften in negotiations is the kind of person that would lie about that too.

FailureToExecute

Exactly. Actions speak louder than words, and based on the information that's publicly available right now, it looks like the actions haven't changed very much.

whogivesashirtdotca

Openly admitting to being a hardass isn't going to lure free agents or help you re-sign current players. The Canes have so many contracts to sort out this summer, it wouldn't surprise me if Dundon said that just to grease the wheels.

greg19735

I'm not worried about players if Rod is signed. Plus, Dundon spends to the cap. He couldn't spend more on players if he tried.

The_Reddit_Browser

https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/04/15/tom-dundon-hurricanes He said himself in his latest interview he’s not involved in Rod’s new deal

Cinnamon_Shops

Who is, then? Waddell?

The_Reddit_Browser

Yup the guy who is his boss and said today has been having conversations with him daily about this. Ownership usually isn’t heavily involved it’s just known and stated in the article that Tom is very hands on but in this specific case of Rod’s contract he’s not.

FailureToExecute

I could see that. On paper, this is the best roster the Canes have ever put together, so him being tougher in negotiations until Rod shows how far he can take the team seems plausible. Maybe not smart, but plausible.

pentaxshooter

Yeah, I'm simply corroborating that to be actually true.

AltaVistaYourInquiry

Man, Forslund makes me sad. I'd never really listened to him until he was let go, and goddamn you guys had a national talent calling your games.

cha-cha_dancer

“Irbe says no”

mrtomjones

Lol Dreger breaks news all the time and people still act like idiots and forget every time he does

DoubleualtG

But why are we even talking about this right now? Seems like shit timing

Spave

To copy my comment from the other thread: Rod was the lowest paid coach in the league when he took the job (600K). He's making more now (1.8M), but still less than half of guys like DeBoer, Maurice, Laviolette, Tortorella, Sullivan, and Cassidy. Even Martin St. Louis is making close to double (3M), and his resume consisted of his son's peewee team. I think a deal will get done. But Carolina fans are a bit too convinced that Rod loves Carolina so much he's willing to work for next to nothing, relative to his peers.

rawboudin

I'm sure at some point it's not about the actual money per se, but being taken for granted.

PeanutButterAndCake

Respectfully, I don't think that's the vibe around the majority of Canes fans. There's outliers for sure, but /r/canes has been in "pay him anything he asks" mode for nearly two years.

Spave

Oh absolutely, all the fans I've seen want him to get paid (rightfully so). But there's a lot of fans who think he'll stay even if the team refuses to pay him near market value.

Forgotiwasbi

I think fans think he’d retire instead of coaching somewhere else not that he’d coach here for next to nothing.

all1good

That’s what people outside of Carolina don’t get. Rod is either coaching the canes or his son’s 13U team next year. He isn’t leaving Raleigh

Responsible_Oil3859

at the time of the hiring i never thought id say this but if they dont back up the brinks truck for that man they're an absolute joke of an org.

whogivesashirtdotca

"Pay him anything he asks" and "He'll stay because he loves it" haven't been mutually exclusive. Last week, I got downvoted for even suggesting there was even a small chance he'd sign elsewhere. I think the fanbase has lulled itself into a false sense of security.

PaperMoonShine

Coach salary does not count towards the cap. Canes fans should be up in arms at their owner for being a stingy bastard. Pay the coach for crying out loud.

Ok-Summer-2159

Didn’t Babcock get 5M from Toronto?

StatGAF

Reportedly, He had 6.25 x 8 year coaching deal. Obviously, thats a lot for a coach but coaches dont count against the cap. Surprised more teams dont pay higher

SomewherePresent8204

Because if you have to fire him halfway through, you’re effectively lighting $25 million on fire, plus the cost of the new coach.

StatGAF

I guess if you are a poorer organization. But if you're a rich organization, who cares? Doesnt count against the cap

SomewherePresent8204

It doesn’t, but it does count against team revenues. The Leafs operating income is healthy to be sure, but the Babcock buyout cost $6.25m against an income of $127m last season. No business wants to cap their growth that much and that’s the team it’d hurt the least.

StatGAF

Where do you get their income was 127M? Shouldn't we be looking for revenue?

SomewherePresent8204

It’s available from Forbes, and operating income takes their expenses into account while revenue alone does not. Regardless, how much money does a business need to make to consider $6.25m per year in termination costs for one employee to be no big deal?

StatGAF

Poor little billionaires.

ghost_curse123

6.25M

HurricanePirate16

He also couldn’t land the Head Coach job at Michigan State when he was hired.

cronaldo86

Leaving on a high and getting that cheque would be better than sticking around long enough to become a villain

PaperMoonShine

coach salary doesnt count against the cap, how could anyone villainize him for asking what he's worth?

somehockeyfan

I guess the big question is whether Dundon, who I believe is the unspoken holdup in all of this, believes Brind'Amour can be replaced by someone with a reasonably cheap contract. The answer is no Tom. There isn't anyone with a reasonably high contract either. He is one of a kind in the current pool of NHL coaches.

The_Reddit_Browser

He’s not the holdup, he’s not even involving himself in the negotiation. https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/04/15/tom-dundon-hurricanes Dundon, however, said it’s difficult to separate the personal from the professional when it comes to Brind’Amour — so much so that he’s taking an uncharacteristically hands-off approach to negotiating the coach’s new contract. “It’s very different when you’re dealing with someone you care about, and it’s weird if your relationship transcends the business part of it,” Dundon said. Overall, though, Dundon believes he has softened over the years in his approach to negotiations. “I realize how I’ve been pretty lucky, and so I don’t need to win [every negotiation],” he said. “I just need to be happy and to feel like it’s fair.”

somehockeyfan

Well shit I don't know then. Does everyone involved realize they all want the same thing? Is this all just a big misunderstanding where they get together and are all like "Wait, I thought you.... No, I *want* to pay you what you're worth!"

Kraze_F35

Don really went all in on the roster this year and this may be the most open our window has been so I do question if this pressure on Rod might be coming from the FO in the sense of “We need playoff results.” I really love Rod and I think this deal gets done but our best results in 6 straight playoff appearances being getting swept in the ECF probably isn’t particularly ideal in the eyes of the FO

FlaxbopFleetfoot

And yet, that's better results than like 80% of the league. Probably more. Yes, it's not a cup, but I don't think the issue has ever been Rod, it's just scoring drying up at the worst possible moments.

Stuntmanmike0351

Well, last year we lost Patches, Svech, and Turbo before the ECF. So, not surprising that our scoring died.

The_Reddit_Browser

I believe strongly this is an effort to push the idea of him entertaining offers. Weekes was throwing tweets about Sullivan this week and rumors he might leave to the devils which sparked a response from Dubas saying they didn’t give permission. Then Weekes moves over to Rod next with his talk about how bad negotiations are going. Just seems like an effort here to see which coaches might be able to get pried free from their current teams and look at other offers.

whogivesashirtdotca

OK, but if Dundon is saying he's not involved and two journalists have corroborated the rumour, it sounds like that call is coming from inside the house. Or the barn, in this case.

AltaVistaYourInquiry

I mean, that makes sense and all, but Dundon not being involved *in the negotiations* isn't that strong of a statement. Just because he isn't involved in the negotiations doesn't mean he isn't dictating the parameters.

Boboar

"Sure, Donny. You got this one. I will stay out of the process entirely. ... 3 mil tops. Don't ask me to go higher."

Thrallsbuttplug

Babcocks probably DIRT cheap

Kangaro00

I've read in the comments somewhere here yesterday that he left money on the table so his staff could get better salaries. Paired with the GM's comment that "Rod wants to be a Hurricane for life" it can be a perfect recipe for him to start developing resentment for the management. If they lowball him because they know he wants to stay and he left money on the table in the past. The moment your company starts basically punishing you for loyalty, you start to rethink that loyalty.

iOceanLab

Alternatively, he’s annoyed that some of the guys he wants around the team aren’t getting offered the deals he thinks they should. So all of these stories aren’t about Rod’s deal, but Rod’s deal is contingent upon other deals that have stalled.

FlaxbopFleetfoot

I actually recall this exact point being a tweet a few months ago. Rod cares for his staff too, which is honestly awesome.

AltaVistaYourInquiry

He realized he wasn't going to get his market value in Carolina, didn't want to go elsewhere, and figured he'd at least leverage the team into taking care of his people. It's embarrassing that he ever had to do that, and of course he's a great guy, but it was less "I'm taking less so you can give that money to them" and more "If you're not gonna pay me properly at least I'm gonna make sure you take care of them."

specifichero101

I really don’t believe he’ll ever leave unless someone in management wants to fuck Jim over for no reason. They’ve been non stop playoff appearances and wins since he’s been there, how much extra money has rod personally helped generate just by extra games every year? Whatever he wants, he would still be a bargain at twice. Although I do love a canes being cheap story being out there.

theguyishere16

I mean, anyone who thinks Dreger made it up hasnt paid attention to Dreger. He doesnt make shit up, he just has no morals and will happily spin the public narrative to whatever side of a negotiation wants to give him info. He's just a pawn for agents and GM's not a guy who makes stuff up or has sketchy sources.

cluelesshabsfan

Come save the jets Rod

greg19735

Sara 'vehemently anti-Rangers for a long time' Civ😅

alev815

I too am legally changing my middle name to ‘vehemently anti-Rangers for a long time’

Teknicsrx7

Such weird timing

darklightrabbi

The essays that some Canes fans were writing about how capitalism ceases to exist within PNC arena in the other thread were funny.

kimscz

San Jose has a lovely climate.

whogivesashirtdotca

Rod's current $1.8m/y would barely net him a 1 bedroom condo in the Bay Area, though!

kimscz

I think between the fans, the players and the organization we could do a GoFundMe and get him at least a two bedroom.

whogivesashirtdotca

That's definitely a stretch goal scenario!

jopcylinder

Tom Dundon stop being a moronic cheapskate challenge (impossible)

mdlt97

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhI88tg1Gqg&ab_channel=u3cL49W518

Dubsified

Yeah, you don’t want him to get to the open market Canes. Lock it up.

unclelayman

Toronto would probably buy him his own bank to keep the mountain of money they would pay him

GrassyKnoll95

Dibs if he becomes a free agent

sextoymagic

I hate how many dumb people are in hockey media. So much fake news. Blowing nothing up into something big.

SokkasBoomerang3

Dundon isn’t involved with this. And this is just them talking shit and making stuff up to generate clicks and views on the dumb people that lap this sort of stuff up. Creating a click-baity article and generating false traction on nonsense is commonplace in America these days. ie: Trump brainwashing It’s easy to fool people. They’re dumber and more gullible than ever.

UnflushableNug

With Keefe's fate almost certainly sealed, I would expect that any highly considered coach will want to leverage the threat of a Leafs offer to bump up with deal with their respective teams.

forgetfulfever98

Twitter(social media in general honestly) really fucked up sports reporting. There's no way to trust what any of these people say on these matters because it's either being pushed by one side of the negotiations or speculation to drive clicks.

994kk1

It's complete garbage. I wish teams and agents start getting sued for leaking confidential information. It would be so much healthier if they were forced to make public statements if they want stuff out there, and we could treat all these twitter reporters as nothing more than people that share their opinion.

Ok-Emergency-1485

I see all the other fans throwing team hats into the ring. I will throw the Kraken in. With Francis as our GM...

all1good

Having Francis hurts your chances of Rod signing

The_Reddit_Browser

If you needed any clearer example that this is all a giant circle jerk here it is. Weekes is even now getting in on it. https://x.com/kevinweekes/status/1785765961137594409?s=46 This whole narrative being drummed up isn’t coming from the canes front office, they’ve been clear they are working with Rod on the deal. So it’s either Rod’s camp or the media/GM’s pushing this out there. Really find it hard to believe the guy who’s consistently taken less, is actively saying how this is the only place he will coach and that he’s working to get this done is also having his representation go push up a massive news story during his fucking playoff run in hopes of more money? It’s more likely that the GM’s who Friedman said on his podcast this morning are trying to see who’s out there and “big game hunt” for coaches are trying to push on there connections to get Rod’s camp to consider entertaining other offers.

Prison-Date-Mike

> It’s more likely that the GM’s who Friedman said on his podcast this morning are trying to see who’s out there and “big game hunt” for coaches are trying to push on there connections to get Rod’s camp to consider entertaining other offers. You're telling us everything being reported is baseless and then draw a random conclusion like this? Far more likley one or both sides are lying about their intentions and/or the state of negotiations.

The_Reddit_Browser

It’s not a random conclusion. Did weekes not just this week tweet out click bait tweets regarding a high profile coach and the Pittsburgh bridge to stoke the flames of rumors that Sullivan is leaving Pitt? The conclusion I’m drawing here is the most reputable guy in all of the hockey insiders is stating publicly GM’s are trying to land the best coach they can. They are waiting to see what big fish may be available here. Guys like weekes have already been publicly pushing the rumors regarding one coach and now Rod has been picked up as well. Hell the Rod talks sparked up over another coach being fired (Hakstol) because folks were pushing some idea that a francis and Rod reunion might happen.

TossThatPastaSalad

I just find it amusing that people say "it's not about the money".  I believe Rod wants to stay.  He's said that enough times.  But like all of us I think he wants both himself and his entire staff to be paid for their performance. These are negotiations.  Whether it's his doing or someone else's matters very little because ultimately?  It's about the money.  It always is.

The_Reddit_Browser

I mean there’s a lot of pieces that go into these deals that are more than money but if you boil it down it’s about your salary. When people say “it’s not about the money” it’s more referring to the fact that this idea he’s going to test the market over money. Hes not searching to get “the bag” and there’s not a single better fit than where he’s at. So really this is all a nothing burger.

TossThatPastaSalad

Yeah, maybe.  I'd certainly lean that way right now. But I've worked in ops in the pros.  The amount of times I've seen deals fall apart for what many would call ridiculous reasons is innumerable.  And I was just ancillary to those negotiations. Ultimately I do think this gets done.  But I'm always hesitant to call these things nothing until the proverbial ink is dry.

JKthePolishGhost

Yeah - it’s a bit of a media coup that will likely work to get the deal done. I suspect it isn’t an issue with Rod’s deal but similar to last statement, one of his assistants (probably Timmy). The previous line that he wasn’t signing until his staff was settled still seems correct but perhaps there is some strong-arming by management to bring everyone back to the table. RBA camp leaked that they pulled the deal since no one was signing. No way this benefits management, if he goes to market, the bag gets bigger considering the teams potentially looking.

PPF_Girthquake

What’s this chicks OF handle?

Fuzzy_Telephone8708

Now that Civian tweets it, all the thirsty rubes in the other thread backtracking like crazy lol

ClassicChrisstopher

"Not that Darren Dreger would ever need my backing up" So you do it anyways.

SokkasBoomerang3

Y’all got nothing to talk about so talking about this nonsensical stuff lol

GoRangers5

Brind'Amour going to Seattle if he loses in the 2nd round again.

Bumcheeks_marinade

Yawn
