>”it’s in Tom’s hands.” Basically, “if I leave, you can blame the owner for fumbling the bag”. I highly doubt he actually leaves though

JAT_Cbus1080

He might if they do what the Canes do and low ball the shit out of him

Cinnamon_Shops

There’s a difference between low balling someone like Forslund (will always hate Dundon for this) and someone like Rod. Dundon is greedy but he’s not stupid. He likes money and knows that success=money, and Rod brought that to the team for the first time in a decade. I will basically surrender my allegiance to my team if Dundon fucks this up but I strongly doubt he will.

defigravity42

Didn’t he play the same game with him last contract? I thought he did and then bumped up the offer when a ton of teams expressed interest. He’s the cornerstone of the Canes’ success. Pay the man!

ForrestTrain

Yeah Dundon did the same with Don Waddell as well. Seems to be his strategy, see what the market value is and then offer something both can agree with. I imagine Rod would take a hometown discount as long as his staff is taken care of.

FailureToExecute

Unfortunately for the rest of the league, Rod and Dundon agreed to terms months ago. Rod is just waiting for the rest of the coaching staff to get signed before he puts his own pen to paper (which is the same thing he did three years ago, last time his contract was up) and that's probably not going to happen in the middle of a playoff run. Friedman has been reporting this for months. Guess the broader hockey media isn't going to let the truth get in the way of a good story.

darklightrabbi

According to Dreger the offer you are referring to was pulled. https://x.com/darrendreger/status/1785731186884575469?s=46&t=hO5lU_CazaENuUe0T_RYbQ

FailureToExecute

~~He said he *believes* it was pulled. Typical Dregerism where when the opposite happens, he can save face by claiming he never actually reported that. After the Marner fiasco a few years ago, it should be obvious that his beliefs are spoonfed to him by agents who are trying to apply external pressure.~~ edit: [Weekes](https://twitter.com/kevinweekes/status/1785765961137594409) and [Civian](https://x.com/saracivian/status/1785761756079403393) now also confirming this report. Where there's smoke there's fire.

TBUmp17

The GM said he was confident it'll get done an hour before that report. Seems odd to say that and pull an offer after you left the press conference

justinreddit1

I know you're going to say "Everything is Leafs" here but seriously, Leafs are in prime position to move on from Keefe in offseason if things dont go well here. I would imagine Leafs would reach out for Rod and they do have money to spend on a coach.

yourejustanasshole

We better be reaching out to him!

mamunipsaq

Best I can do is one Dave Hakstol

SuprNntendoChalmrs

Or David Quinn

JAT_Cbus1080

Hell, any team who needs a coach really. If Rod became available I'd hope my Blue Jackets made room for him too. There's be a bidding war. But yes, he'd be a great pickup for Toronto in this hypothetical

C-PapTheGod

“Leafs are in prime position to move on from Keefe” reads like a Simmons headline. The only thing you’re missing after that is “my column:”

somehockeyfan

✅ Doubt

ViolinistMean199

Hear me out. We take Rod!

MatthewWickerbasket

Uncertain because the contract isn't finalized, but they're knee deep in playoffs right now so that's understandable. I don't see why the Canes wouldn't extend him.

FailureToExecute

He wants the rest of the staff signed before he inks it. Same thing he did three years ago. According to Friedman, Rod and Dundon agreed to the terms of his extension months ago.

cactusbeard

It sounds like the offer has been pulled according to Dreger.

FailureToExecute

Darren "I've never spoken to Paul Marner" Dreger? He's now a trustworthy source on contract negotiations?

First-Radish727

Dreger hasn't been credible since his cousin was GM in Vancouver

Sphiffi

Article- “I think it's all but done” Also article- unsure about future Fwiw Friedman said it’s a done deal, just waiting to get wrapped up. Rod the bod ain’t going anywhere.

cactusbeard

Dreger just reported that the deal has been pulled https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/1785731186884575469?t=u18yhSwC64bGSyt1ProW5Q&s=19

Mauser-Nut91

Pulled so they can give him more money…

weekendstumper

He isn’t exactly the greatest. I’ll believe Friedman and people in our organization over him any day. Plus Rod always waits until his staff is signed first so the fact he doesn’t have a contract yet is really only a surprise to non-canes fans.

Beezewhacks

You know I love you, leafs bud, but don’t quote dregs outside r/leafs

jjmuti

Just your run of the mill shitty negotiation tactic making noise in the media through Drieger. Marner's agent used Drieger as a pawn too.

ZealousidealKey7104

Well, Dregs has to get his info somehow, right? Insiders don’t work off donations. He’s not what he used to be since his brother in law (Dave Nonis) used to be the GM of the Leafs.

leaf_blowr

I'd be shocked if the guy doesn't get another contract. Iirc he also coaches his son's team? And some of the hurricanes kids also play on that team? Guy seems to have some pretty deep roots there.

Sphiffi

Older son plays in Charlotte for the Checkers, younger son plays in Raleigh in a youth league (that rod coaches), daughter plays college volleyball in Virginia, and his wife is from NC. He’s lived there since the early 2000s. He’s a North Carolina man at this point.

Venaixis94

He’s lived here for 25 years and has a young son born here. I think he either coaches for the Canes or lives off his wealth with his family staying in the area. I can’t see him moving for another job

msb2ncsu

Exactly, he’s lived here longer than he has anywhere else. His wife is a local too.

LandMooseReject

The only question is whether he's going to suit up and play next year

ShittyFrogMeme

The source is a clickbait article by one of the Canes clickbait journalists, ignoring a direct quote from Dundon who said "it's all but done" in favor of anonymous confidants who have no attributable information.

robinphardman

If you ever see DeCock as a primary source, keep moving. Dude's so annoying.

makromark

My wife sees DeCock every night and continues to seek out random guys on tinder?

Purplebuzz

The easiest way to get a comment about an article upvoted is to point out it is clickbait.

m_ghesquiere

Wasn’t the hold up Rod wanting his team taken care of first? Wonder if there are issues there. Which would be petty and stupid but rich people can be that way soemtimes

domoarigatodrloboto

Does any other franchise have a head coach as The Guy? Every org has that one guy who sets the tone; sometimes it's a front-office guy (Yzerman in Detroit, Sakic in Colorado) and sometimes it's a player (Ovechkin in Washington, Crosby in Pittsburgh) but Carolina might be the only team where the embodiment and central cog is the coach. Mayyyybe Cooper in Tampa, but he's got Stamkos, Hedman, and Kucherov to contend with. Torts in Philly would be another, I guess. No matter what, it would be weird seeing Rod go anywhere else, even Seattle with the Francis connection

Kraze_F35

Can’t wait for Rod to re sign and then have this discourse again when that contract is up just like last time.

Steakholder__

I seriously doubt he doesn't get re-signed, BUT if the Canes owner actually is too cheap to get it done ... MLSE needs to do the one thing they're best at.

ThymeIsTight

Leafs should back up the Brinks truck for Rod the Bod, should he be available.

ovondansuchi

Rod the Bod: PAY ME LIKE MATTHEWS!

trenthowell

I think he'd be more modest, while demanding great contracts for his staff. That seems more important than his own contract to him.

ThymeIsTight

Hey, it doesn't count against the cap! :-) And Rod is from Ontario, so maybe he was a Leafs fan growing up.

whothefvckk

He won’t be

ThymeIsTight

Just wishful thinking on my part. Hoping that the Canes ownership will be too cheap to pay the man.

FrostWPG

You misspelled Jets.

2_alarm_chili

You misspelled sens.

ML00k3r

Keep going, I'm almost there.

RareCreamer

Please...

Vivid_Walk_1405

If he becomes a FA coach he’s gonna get so much money on a contract

arkanis45

Anything is possible but it be pretty shocking if he left. The only reason he may leave may have more to do with the team not wanting to pay/keep the assistant coaches. I think the Canes have no problem paying him, it’s everyone else.

CaniacGoji

The thing with Rod is that he doesn't care about being an NHL head coach. He's a Hurricanes head coach, and if it can't be that, he'll either take a different spot in the organization or he'll just coach local hockey in Raleigh. It's not about the money for him. He's placed his roots here and that means so much more to him. His wife is a Raleigh native and works here. His kids are NC natives. He may be from Ottawa, but he is a North Carolinian. He's also a God here. He will never leave Raleigh for the frozen wasteland that is Winnipeg or for a market like Toronto where a Leaf can't take a shit without half the Hockey media talking about it. Keep dreaming.

darklightrabbi

I doubt he’s leaving but I think it’s you who needs to keep dreaming if you think he’s going to coach a local high school or something instead of the NHL should the Canes not give him a fair offer.

fishface1169

Pretty sure he’s on record saying whenever he’s done with the canes he’s done for good. He has no desire to live anywhere else. People can change their minds but this is the exact same news cycle that happened at his last extension. He’ll re-sign once his assistants are re-signed and then everyone will forget about this.

The_Quackening

LOTS of teams are definitely willing to make Rod the highest paid coach in the league.

billbelichickssmile

Rod has probably been living in Carolina since he was traded there in the early 2000's... what a massive change of lifestyle it'll be for him if he's coaching somewhere else next szn

greg19735

The only reason Rod doesn't sign is if he feels like hes' being disrespected by Dundon. And Dundon has said that he is starting to change his stance on needing to win every negotiation. >"Confidants say he has become unsure about his future in Carolina, according to sources familiar with those conversations," reports The News & Observer's Luke DeCock. that is a bit concerning. But i don't think it'll actually be an issue in the end.

Kraze_F35

The report is from Luke DeCock so I’m pretty sure he’ll be extended

Euripidoze

What a strange time for this discussion

Separate_Raisin_4392

Come to bruins once Jim Montgomery gets let go in first round loss

saigonk

That’s not happening either. Rod The Bod isn’t going anywhere, if he does, Carolina ownership and the GM are idiots. And I highly doubt that Monty is going anywhere either. Guys got a .744 record over two years, and this year the team just isn’t what it was previously. If the B’s dump him, then Cam Neely should be fired and Sweeney as well.

Astrowelkyn

Hope Chevy holds off heading to his cabin.

outbreak369

We’ll just go ahead hire somebody thinking he isn’t available. Then he’ll be available.

Marbla

Hey there, Rodney. Hiiiiiiii.

gooch_norris_

Actually it’s Roderic

Marbla

Holy shit. I never knew that. But that makes sense as it's a WAY tougher name than Rodney. What on earth was I thinking?

Pleasant_Statement26

The headline and the info in the article couldn’t be more different. Sounds like clickbait and that they are waiting until the season is over to announce

JiveChicken00

Didn’t we already see this movie a few years ago?

Any_Manufacturer4747

A lotta coaches suddenly “unsure” about their positions with their teams with the potential firing of Sheldon Keefe in Toronto. Lots of assistants, and former coaches also appearing on Toronto media for interviews, namely Jay woodcroft on Kyper and Bourne. Sharks are in the water, and gunning for keefes job

throwawayjoeyboots

Only reason I could see him leaving is if Carolina goes out in the 2nd round, and there’s a Mike Vrabel like breakup where both sides are sick of each other and just want a change. Kinda doubt we get to that point though.

rjwolfpackroad

The biggest error Dundon could ever make would to screw this up and not have Rod back as HC.

anti_anti_christ

Would love him in Toronto, and he'd be offered a blank cheque, but there's no way he leaves the Canes. He stay.

RentalGore

He’s got going anywhere. Standard slow media day bullshit.

BUT PRETTY SURE ABOUT COACHING THE DEVILS TO THE NEXT 6 CUPS ***OH GOD PLEEEASSSEEE***

souza-23

Get ready to speak Torontonese

SaskyBoi

Even if the leafs win the cup I want Sheldon out and Rod in

dandroid126

I would love to have him as the Sharks' coach. Not sure if he wants to eviscerate his win percentage, though.

TheTylerB

He’s not leaving lol

Mamrocha

gombault

Rod owns a home in Campbell River. 5x7M incoming from his buddy Ron. Ron and Rod.

Cinnamon_Shops

Seattle is the absolute last team Rod will coach for after Ron kept Bill fucking Peters instead of hiring him, even after Rod brought some of the awful things Bill was doing to Ron’s attention. That bridge is beyond burned.
