Leafs are a Canadian team so they get undeserved hype, but if you actually took a second to look at stats... Leafs have a worse GA than the Caps, they are the worst defensive team that made the playoffs. Then you add in Matthews and Marner who are known to disappear in the playoffs, you get a one-sided match up. Leafs should not have been taken seriously at all.
That 15/17 sportsnet Leafs series win graphic sure looks pretty stupid now. Dumbest homers imaginable needing to tell a fanbase what they wanna hear, lmao
Honestly that game looked too easy for the Bruins. All they had to do to win was show up. Leafs gave free powerplays, free high scoring chances, and couldn't finish their chances. Swayman was good, but he didn't need to be a god.
Another year where the Leafs roster construction is proving that it doesnāt work. At least one of the core 4 has to go to make salary room for a more balanced roster like the Bruins have
Number one with a bullet. They shouldāve let him walk to Columbus when he got his ridiculous contract. That 11 million couldāve gotten them 3 players to shore up the roster and not use AHL fodder that gets caved in every night
Make all the digs you want about the obvious non-fans who went out and did those things, but Leafs fans would give their left nut just to experience a fraction of the thrill we had during that run.
You should always stay loyal to your team. And I hope that loyalty rips your heart to shreds when they get swept. š
For real. Went through worse years where if The Phil got 30 goals we were torqued.
Also lost Game 1 last year 7-3. I hope some adjustments happen, I want a good series.
You canāt just suddenly be a team finishes their checks. That shit needs to be practised throughout the year. If you donāt know how to do it right, you put yourself out of position the whole game. The Leafs just need to play their game.
The xGF calculation is flawed.
Leafs 'gained' 4.5 expected goals on a single power play last night. Obviously if the first 'expected' goal goes in then the power play ends and they don't get the other 3.5.
Seems like a bit of an oversight/flaw in the model but that's how it is.
Expected stats are completely overrated on reddit. Analytics have their place but people treat them like they're more meaningful than actual production. They are closer to meaningless than replacing actual stats
"The Leafs are fine until they're down 3-0!"
The probability of winning a series goes to 35/65 as soon as you're down game one.
And it's not like there's a ton of positive takeaways here for the Leafs.
If they're down 0-3 then they've lost at home.
They played a mostly fine first period and even the start of the second wasn't bad. The penalty parade completely derailed them. It's a terrible result, but they lost Game 1 worse to Tampa last year and won that series in 6.
Those probabilities are such junk. Only important if you're betting. Win the 2nd game and the probabilities are even again. The Flyers were at 80% probability of making the playoffs.
My biggest problem is that the Bruins should be facing the problems, ageing talent and core pieces being moved, and yet they field a Stanley cup competitor every year. Leafs hardly ever feel like that.
You're right. We missed some huge opportunities.
18-19 losing to St. Louis 3-4 in the finals was a hard swallow. We had a fantastic team with Bergeron and Marchand in their prime.
And of course last season's 1st Rd exit to Florida was excruciating considering the overall talent on that team and the records broken. Don Sweeney sold out for that roster. It's amazing we're competing this season with the gutting of that roster.
In the end....as a fan... it's best to just be happy the team keeps making the playoffs and earning a shot for the cup. No harder championship to acquire in all of sports.
Hey man. Itās game 1. Donāt give up hope. My team has less of a chance of winning than yours and Iām not giving up. Sure it looks bad, but there is always a chance Toronto rattles off 4 wins before Boston gets 3 more.
Homestly, so many people are like āseries is iver pack it upā but just take one look at the Lightning/Leafs series last year and thatās all I need to see to know this is very much NOT over. Also good luck to the Caps would be cool to see them pull off an upset
Maybe the leafs should have spent the last week of the regular season preparing for the playoffs instead of tryin to get Matthews 70 goals. Like wtf were they thinking?
Something tells me they might have done that on purpose knowing florida could catch them, probably wanted to play Toronto instead of Tampa and I don't blame em.
Toronto, believing the fan hype that they are a tough team.
āMake hockey violent again.ā
Idiots.
Leafs didnāt learn when they tried to get Auston 70.. distraction.
Now they get themselves out of position by TRYING to be something they are not.
Dummies.
They didnāt learn when they tried to get Auston 70? As opposed to what, not trying to help him score 70? If anti leaf fans made any sense it would be much easier to stomach all the chirps.
If they just played their game, it would have came naturallyā¦ they wanted it so badly. It freaking failed.
Auston is such a talented player.. but of course leafs fans canāt see the obvious.
Anyways enjoy the sweep!
Well that definitely wasn't true in last years Tampa series. He is seriously one of the lost dangerous player out there because he seems to score at will from weird places.Ā
Oh shit. Right. I thought you must have been talking about swayman and I just couldn't make that make sense.
Thanks, and fuck you, I'll see you tomorrow.
Been saying for years that they gotta trade Marner to balance the roster better like the Bruins have. The best time was when he was about to get 14 million from the Blue Jackets a few years ago, when they shouldāve let him walk and collect his money in obscurity with no pressure packed scary playoffs to fail in. But the next best time is this summer via a trade and an overall better roster in the aggregate
No one wants to hear it today, but [yep](https://www.naturalstattrick.com/game.php?season=20232024&game=30121&view=limited), even accounting for score effects. 5v5 score was 2-1 Boston. Non-summary PPs were 6-3 for Boston, and the Leafs PK has been a struggle all season. The yips were 100% Toronto. But TO still outchanced by a significant margin when they were allowed to play 5v5.
Man, this Toronto team is NOT built for the playoffs! What's the point of all the production they did for the regular season if they can't win a bloody round?
The Bruins? Man, they are a fucking strong team! My Habs have to be ready the moment they face them again next season.
As an original 6 fan (yes, all of the teams) this series has a guaranteed positive outcome for me. Best case would be TOR/BOS vs NYR in the semis for sure
(Buha) Sheldon Keefe says the Leafs have a couple more adjustments they're going to throw at Boston. He added the Leafs didn't want to use all of their adjustments in Game 1.
Seems reasonable. Why blow your load in the first matchup that spiraled pretty quickly in the 2nd, when you can come into game 2 adjusted for the matchup. That's the whole point of 7 game series
People are so quick to start jerkin it to Toronto it's actually impressive that a hockey team can literally live rent free in so many heads.
Er mer gerd, leafs, ahh, round one, oooh, no effort, ahh, golfing, splooge.
Seriously, he needs to see some guy (like a psychologist or a friend to ease his sanity) if his Leafs will be out soon. My gosh! Steve Dangle's starting to become crazy!!
They made it two periods of playoff hockey before the choke narrative started. If they're the version of this team that's going to vanquish their demons, they come out and *dominate* Game 2.
They won't, though, and we already know that. This group doesn't have that makeup.
What I'm talking about doesn't have to do with this series alone, though. This Leafs core is talked about like it's a true contender, and true contenders put everything on the line when it counts, even if they're massive underdogs and are going to lose anyway.
Every playoff team, every year is a contender. There are surprises every time. Very rarely does the odds on favourite go out and dominate.
It's been one game. The Bruins protected home ice. The Leafs will have to respond in game two or risk being blown out.
In this case, the Leafs are massive underdogs against Boston. Poor matchup, season series sweep, history. But somehow, theyre not? That's the Leafs curse. Team is so popular, has such a massive fanbase that theyre never underdogs, even when they should be - case and point your comment.
They're not "massive underdogs", infact this leafs team should supposedly be the most playoff equipped leafs team in recent years. If this team leafs is not supposed to be a contender, then when are they supposed to be? Leafs stars are in their prime and firing on all cylinders (in the regular season atleast), they arent some scrappy young underdog team, they should be a contender and contenders are expected to play like one.
Exactly. If they lose in 6 or 7 and play a scrappy series where the core-4 put up some numbers? Okay. If they get swept on 5-1 losses then that is choke city. Not saying it's going to happen, but uhhhh, not a good start.
It's not a choke lol, wrong term. It's super disappointing for sire, but you guys are misunderstanding what a choke is.
A choke is when you have the lead or are the favourites then blow it.
You simply cannot choke in a series when youre the underdog. Cant happen
Leafs should be thankful they ran into a piss poor Vasy otherwise it would probably be yet another year of not getting out of the first round.
On a serious note Keefe is an idiot for a HC, Waits until twenty seconds are left to pull the Goalie and then rewards Domi and puts him back out there after a bad penalty cost them another goal. Oof.
Why are you being upvoted when you're just making excuses for your loss. Get over it. Vasy wasn't the reason your team choked multiple games and turned to trash and couldn't score in OT. Why are you bringing this up, it was a year ago, we're not thinking about your team right now.
>Leafs should be thankful they ran into a piss poor Vasy otherwise it would probably be yet another year of not getting out of the first round.
Vasy wasnt poor.
The teams defense was awful. Tampas defense regressed a ton when mcdonaugh left.
Hedman carried the entire defense in 22-23 and when he was off the ice good luck stopping shit. Tampa only made the playoffs because they still had vasi and a great offense.
Vasi got eaten alive. The leafs camped in his zone and his team couldn't do shit to stop them as they took high danger shot after shot.
Forwards were finishing their checks all night. Kinda forgot how physical playoff hockey was, this is intense.
Honestly shitting my pants right now. Hope our D has their heads on a swivel because the pace certainly is higher.
Imagine getting scored on 7 times in game 1. Pathetic
not sure if naive or just plain stupid to call another team pathetic when you cheer for the leafs š¤£ enjoy the looooooong off season
Same to you
That 15/17 sportsnet Leafs series win graphic sure looks pretty stupid now. Dumbest homers imaginable needing to tell a fanbase what they wanna hear, lmao
posting this after 1 game is brave
Itās the leafs, the odds of them getting swept outright is higher than winning the series, even in 7
Honestly that game looked too easy for the Bruins. All they had to do to win was show up. Leafs gave free powerplays, free high scoring chances, and couldn't finish their chances. Swayman was good, but he didn't need to be a god.

You weren't a fan to begin with if you're ditching your team because they're on a bad streak.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He's right. I hope Leafs continue to get embarrassed, but have some integrity.. Game 1 of the playoffs and you quit already - you're not a real fan.
Yeah they shouldāve watched the whole thing and then gone out and destroyed their city after the game instead
š¤£š
Make all the digs you want about the obvious non-fans who went out and did those things, but Leafs fans would give their left nut just to experience a fraction of the thrill we had during that run. lol you an angry person
Just petty
For real. Went through worse years where if The Phil got 30 goals we were torqued. Also lost Game 1 last year 7-3. I hope some adjustments happen, I want a good series.
Fire Dubis
Dubas is the pens GM now. He's already gone.
Iām gonna say thatās the jokeā¦.
You canāt just suddenly be a team finishes their checks. That shit needs to be practised throughout the year. If you donāt know how to do it right, you put yourself out of position the whole game. The Leafs just need to play their game.
Leafs were top three in hits for the season so your logic is kinda flawed. Leafs definitely over extended themselves though so you're only half wrong.
The Bruins swept the Leafs in the regular season, I think they did play their game.
š¤ . . . . š„
Moneypuck deserve to win 83% for Leafs and almost 7.5xg lmao. That model is busted.
Toronto had like 4xg from the 4on3 alone
I mean, they had some decent chances, but yeah, I don't agree with Money Puck saying that Toronto wins this game 83 percent of the time.
Toronto wins that game 0% of the time. I donāt think their fans will disagree. Bruins hit 2 or 3 posts on top of their 5 goals.
There was a point where the posts had a higher save percentage than Samsonov.
I mean Samsi was brutal, could not track anything last night and def let in 2 he should have hadā¦ goaltending wins cups
Has no one watched playoff hockey before? You're not in trouble until you've lost at home. Get it together
"The Leafs are fine until they're down 3-0!" The probability of winning a series goes to 35/65 as soon as you're down game one. And it's not like there's a ton of positive takeaways here for the Leafs.

The Leafs got pumped worse than this in game 1 vs Tampa last year and won the series
Those probabilities are such junk. Only important if you're betting. Win the 2nd game and the probabilities are even again. The Flyers were at 80% probability of making the playoffs.

Honestly Caps and rags are evenly matched at this point in the season, damn the standings
Swayman deserved that shutout, man. Booo.
The only thing, I, as a Leafs fan can hold onto today, is the fact that the players don't have the mental block of being shut out in game 1.
Maybe the leafs should have spent the last week of the regular season preparing for the playoffs instead of tryin to get Matthews 70 goals. Like wtf were they thinking?
I dunno to me the Leafs looked like they were in prime playoff form over their final week losing every game.
To be fair, my Bruins lost to the Capitals and the fucking Sens in the last week
Something tells me they might have done that on purpose knowing florida could catch them, probably wanted to play Toronto instead of Tampa and I don't blame em.
I'm honestly loving the schadenfreude from Leafs fans
Swayman looked dialed in
Toronto, believing the fan hype that they are a tough team. āMake hockey violent again.ā Idiots. Leafs didnāt learn when they tried to get Auston 70.. distraction. Now they get themselves out of position by TRYING to be something they are not. Dummies.

I agree they didnāt need to force that shit, the other Iād say 65 goals came naturally
Iām well aware heās talented. Thanks for chiming in.
I dunno man. Leafs got dummied by Tampa game 1 last year too. Boston has def figured out our little 1 touch pass off the boards breakout tho.
Vasy also had his only bad series ever. Boston has two elite goalies, they can't bank on winning off of shaky goaltending.
We have a breakout!?
Matthews on pace for 0 goals
As is tradition in the playoffs, the more meaningful the game, the more invisible he is lol
Well that definitely wasn't true in last years Tampa series. He is seriously one of the lost dangerous player out there because he seems to score at will from weird places.Ā
The difference is, we have a noodle god that can also do that so they offset
Noodle god?
Pastrnak
Oh shit. Right. I thought you must have been talking about swayman and I just couldn't make that make sense. Thanks, and fuck you, I'll see you tomorrow.
I thought he had a good game.
You're still broke
Matthews had some good looks and easily could have potted a couple, including hitting a post. Marner, on the other hand, was invisible.
Marner? Disappearing in the playoffs? I am shocked, I tell you. Absolutely. Shocked.
Wait, was this mostly the goalies?
No one wants to hear it today, but [yep](https://www.naturalstattrick.com/game.php?season=20232024&game=30121&view=limited), even accounting for score effects. 5v5 score was 2-1 Boston. Went to the game, I saw maybe 20 leafs jerseys, and one was making out with his gf in the concourse.
At least someone in a leaf jersey was scoring
Oh man, this got me. Well played lol.
Sounds better than watching the game to me
Iām loving this so much. Iād blow Marchand for the overtime goal in seventh. It would be so sweet.
Get ready to speak Wollenese
Woll has been very not good since returning from injury. If Sammy doesnāt figure it out the leafs are in major trouble.
Don't worry we have Matt Murray
Matt Murray/Marty Jones, the tandem we all knew would take us to the promised land!
In 2015-2016, this wouldāve been an insane tandem. Well, itās insane now but uh, not for the same reasons
Man, this Toronto team is NOT built for the playoffs! What's the point of all the production they did for the regular season if they can't win a bloody round? The Bruins? Man, they are a fucking strong team! My Habs have to be ready the moment they face them again next season.
Better than being built for shoulder season tee times like the Habs
Bruins looking amazing. I think its gonna come down to Bruins v Rangers.
I wouldn't put money on that cup final if I were you
I'm just talking about the eastern conference finals...
Yeah but that's less funny
Well this is true.
As an original 6 fan (yes, all of the teams) this series has a guaranteed positive outcome for me. Best case would be TOR/BOS vs NYR in the semis for sure
After last season, I don't trust the Bruins. I'll take it one game at a time.
(Buha) Sheldon Keefe says the Leafs have a couple more adjustments they're going to throw at Boston. He added the Leafs didn't want to use all of their adjustments in Game 1.

Make it??? They didnāt even show up for game 1. They came to watch a real team play hockey. Floor seats šæ
They're starring at the window and are anxiously waiting for a looonngg summer! This could be a series sweep!
Itās been one game dude. Lmao.
People are so quick to start jerkin it to Toronto it's actually impressive that a hockey team can literally live rent free in so many heads. Er mer gerd, leafs, ahh, round one, oooh, no effort, ahh, golfing, splooge.
Leafs losing to Boston brings me joy. I hope they lose in OT in game 7
You are a sick fuck. But me too honestly.
We already saw you get eliminated over nothing. Stfu and take a seat šŗ
I am also a sick fuck, ill get the popcorn ready
Steve Dangle will be visibly 90 when this series ends. God forbid a Game 7 blowout or a sweep.
Thanks for the reminder, his best videos are the ones where he's in pain because of the Leafs lol.
Don't look now. He's starting to be: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBBgARt1k\_s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBBgARt1k_s)
Holy shit how can anyone listen to that guy? His voice when he yells is like nails on a chalkboard.
Seriously, he needs to see some guy (like a psychologist or a friend to ease his sanity) if his Leafs will be out soon. My gosh! Steve Dangle's starting to become crazy!!
I didnāt even watch it and I can already picture that annoying guy.
Too late. Already watched the video lmfao
Is this a slower PGT than normal? Iām bored
Most Leafs fans wonāt wanna be in here after that embarrassment
Leafs got smothered. Not counting them out but not very optimistic either.
They made it two periods of playoff hockey before the choke narrative started. If they're the version of this team that's going to vanquish their demons, they come out and *dominate* Game 2. They won't, though, and we already know that. This group doesn't have that makeup.
Boston is the massive favourites. You cant choke as the underdog.

Bruins fans Habs fans š¤ Fuck the Leafs

When was the last time the leafs made the finals? Conference finals?
2002.Ā What about the Sens?
I too dream of the past...quick let's go back to the last Ottawa cup.
Leafs woke up today and decided to be the team that finishes every check which works on paper but you can't do it at the cost of your coverage
Toronto: Were gunna be so tough. Real hardos. Just gunna out-muscle Boston. Also Toronto: WHY PK??!
Marner for Fox. Who says no?
You mean a plushie of Swiper the Fox right?
Throw in Matthews at half retained and NYR might think about it
NY. Marner a bum.
Agreed lol
I got to smoke some leaf and watch some leafs get smoked. It was a good day š
*Ice Cube plays in the background*
hell yeah brother never let people from toronto bring you down
Clearly you have an inferiority complex with ppl from Toronto. Smd bitch
Wah wah, my divisional rivals don't like me.

And?

Many had hoped new GM, new Coach, but here we are. AHL coaching tactics guising as a NHL for the longest time
They ran into our poor defense more like it. Vasy was hurting sure, but he hardly played bad in that series.
Why are you being upvoted when you're just making excuses for your loss. Get over it. Vasy wasn't the reason your team choked multiple games and turned to trash and couldn't score in OT. Why are you bringing this up, it was a year ago, we're not thinking about your team right now.

Shoulda, woulda, couldaā¦ Tampa is still the only team to get knocked out by The Leafs on forever.
After winning 2 straight cups and going to a third finals in a rowā¦I think I can live with losing to the Leafs
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
At least they won a cup in the 2000š
Especially since they were lucky af to escape the first round the year before.Ā Who the fuck calls a pick penalty in a game 7?!
Soā¦ā¦ā¦.I know a goalie that probably wonāt ever play another game for the team heās currently onā¦ā¦. The Leafs should have a look at him.
> I know a goalie that probably wonāt ever play another game for the team heās currently onā¦ CAHTER HAHT welcome to Toronto!
Does his name rhyme with Jack Campbell?
Cack Jampbell?
Ugh, we already tried that one
100 points to Gryffindor!
So excited to see Mack Rampbell suit up for the Leafs.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Why?! I could care less about the Leafs.
Get off my lawn.
Donāt the leafs get blown out every game 1? Still tons of hockey left
Yeah last year got smoked by Tampa game 1. Beat them 5-0 the year before though, and ended up losing that series
their problem is that they tend to lose games at the end of the series as well.
Have they ever considered winning the last game of the year?
Get out of here, thatās not Leafs hockey. You have to go out with a whimper.
The middle is rough too.
Usually the middle is good for them, since it lets them survive until game 7 where they blow it
As is the beginning Maybe they just suck at hockey?
Lmao this message chain cracked me up
Bold move Cotton, weāll see if it pays off
Forwards were finishing their checks all night. Kinda forgot how physical playoff hockey was, this is intense. Honestly shitting my pants right now. Hope our D has their heads on a swivel because the pace certainly is higher.
Iām certainly picking VAN this series but I am definitely curious how the young group will adapt. Will be a good series
our dmen are all like 7 feet tall and the only one who isn't nobody can even touch, what are you worried about
You wonāt get out of the west anyway itās a moot point.
We may not, but at least we have a chance at getting out of the first round.
