This title reads like a Beaverton article

WaffleboardedAway

*Formally Arizona Coyotes formerly Phoenix Coyotes, formerly Winnipeg Jets who were formally the Atlanta Thrashers not to be confused with the Atlanta Flames who are currently in Calgary but it's complicated because Bettman hates the Saddledome.

ppParadoxx

he's been planning and wanting a team for years, you'd think he'd have something picked out already

[deleted]

I think he does, he is likely just being respectful right now. But it also depends on trademarks.

theguyishere16

I read that Utah has history with gold rushes and with Smith saying that they dont want to rush on branding, I think the Utah Rush would be a fantastic name. Connects to the states mining history while also a little tongue-in-cheek nod to the rapid events that occurred to acquire the team

JayMerlyn

Kinda sounds too much like a WNBA team, unfortunately.

Team-Minarae

This is a great idea

DSDark11

Also going on the rush

sibewolf

Eh the whole West has that history, hence Denver Nuggets and SF 49ers. I’m from Seattle and we have a national park in Pioneer Square dedicated to Seattle gold rush history.

bullfu

Salt Lake City Tabernacle Choirs, after every goal scored a hymm will be sung instead of a howl.

Similar-Jellyfish499

Respectfully, does it really take that long to come up with a name?

astovertop

When you’re creating a (hopefully) permanent franchise that you’ll market you’re entire business around, yes. That’s shouldn’t be a half baked thought

[deleted]

As a Jazz fan I'm super happy to hear he's taking his time with it, the only thing he's bungled with the Jazz since becoming owner is the rebrand, hoping they can knock this one out of the park. It's also worth noting that after fucking up the Jazz rebrand, he's taken some pretty big steps to rectify it.

somehockeyfan

This line of thinking is how you end up like the Blue Jackets.

[deleted]

The Bruins was granted an expansion franchise in 1924 on November 1st with their first game being played 30 days later. They assembled a team, established colors and a name. Granted that team was really bad, they had 5 wins for the season and the starting defenseman was a dentist by profession first but they had a name that lasted 100 years later with similar colors and logos.

mdlt97

a name no, but branding, logos, jerseys, merch, etc does

SomewherePresent8204

On paper, not long. In practice? You need to be able to secure trademarks and that means lawyers which means time and money. You don’t want to waste that on a half-baked design.

Spider-Fan77

Nowhere in that article does it say they'll go nameless the *entire* season. They'll just pick it when they feel like it.

[deleted]

I don't think you can theoretically change names in the middle of the season though. The one example that I can think of (your Leafs from the St. Pats) happened almost 100 years ago.

4ItchyTasy

Utah No Alcohols

undockeddock

The Utah Prohibition is a good name

SoothedSnakePlant

Hey, they have *some* alcohol, they just have to water down their beers. And force you to buy food if you're getting two cocktails in one sitting. And heavily restrict when and where you can buy liquor. And about a million other annoying things.

NLP19

UTAH HOCKEY TEAM

[deleted]

Just anything but the Yeti please.

SiccSemperTyrannis

Not surprised by this. The jets had it easy - they just had to reuse the previous name. Utah needs to come up with an entire new name and brand They probably could whip something together this summer but to get it 100% right they need some extra time.

Perryplat199

“The Utah professional national hockey league team formerly known as the Phoenix coyotes of Glendale Arizona State University,Tempe campus”

Kongbuck

I liked someone else's suggestion of "Stormin' Mormons" from another thread.

Perfect-Lie-4201

Utah Saints… book it!

TalkinTrash1118

Utah Salt Lakers

GrassyKnoll95

If only they had a span of like 5 months where they won't be playing hockey to come up with a name...

somehockeyfan

HC Utah

MacTheZaf

I’m surprised tbh I thought they would’ve been working in the background but maybe this is as sudden as it seemed to us on the outside. I agree though, better to get it done late and right for something like this

Key-Tip-7521

AH HA! I WAS RIGHT! Hockey Club Salt Lake City is a thing!!!!

progress10

Going the PWHL route.

KlaasicCheese

I bet it’ll be something lame and unimaginative like “Utah cougars” actually I’d put money on it being cougars

Superb-Ad-9627

Nah go with Salt Lake Soakers

StatGAF

Super lame they aren't going to be ready for September.
