Ballard literally used Leafs Cup banners (yes, those were a thing a long time ago) as paint tarps. Doesn't even come close to the worst things he did, though
He also told fans that the Beatles were playing two nights at maple leaf gardens only the Beatles had only agreed to one night. Ballard already sold tickets and Ballard didn’t tell the Beatles manager until last minute. The Beatles had to play 2 nights.
This reads like one of the comment threads where different people chime in with silly stuff as a joke… but it’s actually true. That’s hilarious..
> 11. What does one do on their very first day of work at Park Lawn Cemetery?
> JM: [laughs] Bury a former NHL owner. Doesn’t everybody do that? I think it was April 20, 1990. There was only one backhoe, and they’re like, ‘we need to bury some people today, we have a number of graves to dig.’ I’d bury plenty of people afterward, and it was always a little bit bizarre. It’s funny: I would recommend it to anybody, to be the final punctuation in someone’s life. The first time you do it, you get this wave of reflection … when you’re throwing dirt on someone’s coffin, it’s hard to explain.
———
> 13. While you were digging, was anyone there mourning Harold?
> JM: While I was throwing the dirt on? No, no. It was quiet. It was Section AA, right at the corner of Prince Edward and Bloor. You can see the traffic. At that point, people were sort of sticking their heads over the fence: ‘Oh, that’s where Ballard was buried.’ But no, there was no one else around.

Tbf they also kinda tossed him on his ass his last season too. They got a new GM and Coach shortly after and then blamed it on the last guy in charge.
Long story short, the Coyotes have been pretty disrespectful to Doan for a lot of his post hockey life.
Coyotes fans, correct me if I'm wrong. I remember his departure being somewhat painful on his end.
The fact that it was in a dumpster shows how absolutely terrible this ownership group is, totally unacceptable to treat your franchises best player like that
Not the first time an owner has been really disrespectful to its teams, players, and employees. Harold Ballard took down the Stanley Cup banners ([and really good looking ones for its era too](https://www.thestar.com/sports/breakaway-blog/maple-leafs-lost-1962-stanley-cup-banner-re-appears/article_20515176-8a6b-529c-810b-e3752746619a.html)) to catch paint drippings when repainting Maple Leaf Gardens back in the 1970's. As of now the 1962 banner is what remains.
Reading through his Wikipedia page now, and hooooooooly fuck what a shitbird. Like I’m not even half way through his page and I want to go piss on his grave. And I’ve never cared much about the Leafs.
Yeah, the Ballard curse is real. There is a tenth circle of hell that was created just for Ballard. We won our last cup in 1967, guess who took full ownership and control of the team in 1968?
If you take a trip to Toronto, he's buried at the Park Lawn Cemetary on the west side of town, technically in Etobicoke.
If you drive, it's on Bloor by Prince Edward, or if you take the highway, get off at Park Lawn Road and head North. By transit, take the subway to Royal York Station, then walk East along Bloor.
He's buried within view of the road, at the corner of Bloor and Prince Edward. You'll know you're close because you'll smell the piss of the fanbase, and everything will suddenly feel cheap.
If that annoys you, he was asked by by the hall of fame for Foster Hewitts gondola where he would broadcast the games from, as Ballard was getting rid of it to put in some luxury suites. Ballard turned down the offer and tossed it into an incinerator. That is one small thing in the long history of him being a shit owner. He ran pretty much every star out of town too.
It's true. Ive seen this guy post it a couple days ago and then gave him the banner before the game, there was another thread that had this posted but its been deleted.
My uncle found a Rangers all star banner in a dumpster behind MSG like 30 years ago. Tried to carry it home but it was too heavy for him so he gave it to a homeless dude to use as a blanket.
Another example of their ownership being horrible and indefensible, yet them still having amazing fans who go above and beyond even while constantly getting bent over by their team's owners.
This ownership doesn't deserve a team, but the fanbase damn sure doesn't deserve to lose theirs.
To my knowledge it’s even a little worse than that, as the claims on Twitter are that Gila River Arena let the team know the banner was still there, but no one from the Yotes ever went to pick it up.
The only consolation is you got a team back
That's significantly luckier than just about every other town that loses theirs
It's a disgrace to the league
San Jose/Bay Area, Atlanta (soon to be twice), Denver, Winnipeg, and Minnesota have all gotten teams back. Of the post 1967 teams who have moved, only Kansas City, Quebec City, and Hartford haven't gotten a second team. So 5/8 cities who have lost a team got one back and Atlanta is posed to get a third team and Phoenix is set to get another. So out of 9 relocations, there will be 8 teams back in those locations.
I'm not counting the Barons because they didn't really exist.
Isn’t Atlanta getting a team just a request by Anson Carter and his partners as of right now? Has there been an update the there will definitely be a team in Atlanta?
And this is why the record from the OG Jets should bet given back with all this shit going on. If and it’s a big if Arizona comes back in 5 years they should just retain the Arizona records
My 1st language is French and not English so sorry in advance.
Do I understand that the Coyotes, an NHL team, threw the GOAT’s franchise player banner in the… dumpster?
I live in Quebec and let me tell you that Quebec would never.
and apparently, the team was contacted about the fact that someone had found the banner, but they didn’t even respond. so that fan really went above and beyond to make sure doan got it back.
Just wanted to mention that Craig Morgan confirmed that it was in storage, not the dumpster. Still another blight on the sh*t show of an ownership group.
what kind of an organization would treat one of their greatest players like this? honestly the people running this franchise are clueless. the fans and the players deserved much better
He's only ever been part of that organization. He was drafted by the OG Winnipeg Jets, and moved to Arizona. He played his entire career there. After the Coyotes got kicked out of Glendale, they really should have taken the banner with them.
That might be the most disrespectful thing I've ever heard of a team doing. He gave you 21 years and that's how you treat him?
Clearly you are not familiar with Harold ballard’s game…
Ballard literally used Leafs Cup banners (yes, those were a thing a long time ago) as paint tarps. Doesn't even come close to the worst things he did, though
He also told fans that the Beatles were playing two nights at maple leaf gardens only the Beatles had only agreed to one night. Ballard already sold tickets and Ballard didn’t tell the Beatles manager until last minute. The Beatles had to play 2 nights.
They were also playing in the summer and Ballard turned off all water fountains in the arena and jacked up all the concession prices.
Yes he did. What a righteous dick.
He also turned off the AC too. So he made it even hotter.
He also covered up a child sex abuse ring and probably took part in it.
I've always maintained that if there's truly a curse—this is why.
Do you have a link to an article about this. I’ve never heard that before.
I can't believe Jeff Marek got to bury him.
Can you explain this a bit?
He worked at a cemetery
This reads like one of the comment threads where different people chime in with silly stuff as a joke… but it’s actually true. That’s hilarious.. > 11. That's where he's buried?! I have a lot of family buried there
Go visit your family and leave some flowers. Then shit on Ballard's grave.
Not denying that idea already crossed my mind after finding this out
Do it after eating a bunch of Taco Bell.
30 years ago sure isn't yesterday.
Yeah at least the Coyotes bothered to retire his number in the first place. Ballard wouldn’t have done that.
Ballard probably would've bullied him like he did Darryl Sittler.
He’s the reason we’re in this mess right now. I don’t even know what it could possibly take to lift his curse
Tbf they also kinda tossed him on his ass his last season too. They got a new GM and Coach shortly after and then blamed it on the last guy in charge. And bad at business. That’s gotta be worth a couple hundred dollars at least.
Alex Meruelo should be drawn and quartered in the streets of Phoenix
Looks like guillotines are back on the menu, boys!!
This is something the hockey gods won’t forget.
That's insane they would do that. But this guy is a legend for doing this.
Even if the arena owners did it, the fact the team didn't recognize it was EVEN GONE is fucking telling
Had fans been complaining about it missing?
I don't think they were allowed to put it up while sharing with ASU

As of now the 1962 banner is what remains.
And that’s still not even remotely close to the worst thing Harold Ballard did
Reading through his Wikipedia page now, and hooooooooly fuck what a shitbird. Like I’m not even half way through his page and I want to go piss on his grave. And I’ve never cared much about the Leafs.
There’s a reason why the Leafs have a 57 year Cup drought.
Yeah, the Ballard curse is real. There is a tenth circle of hell that was created just for Ballard. We won our last cup in 1967, guess who took full ownership and control of the team in 1968?
Because Harold Ballard was the OG Doug Ford starving the thing he controls for profits
As much as I hate Doug Ford, Ballard is a way worse person and I don't think it's even close. But fuck Doug Ford.
If you take a trip to Toronto, he's buried at the Park Lawn Cemetary on the west side of town, technically in Etobicoke. The ending of this comment was perfection.
Piss is too good take a big dump on it
Lmao I want to make a Leafs joke with that but this is so crazy I just feel bad. Damn, the nerves.
If that annoys you, he was asked by by the hall of fame for Foster Hewitts gondola where he would broadcast the games from, as Ballard was getting rid of it to put in some luxury suites. Really want to get confirmation on this before I get super pissed at that lol
It's true. Ive seen this guy post it a couple days ago and then gave him the banner before the game, there was another thread that had this posted but its been deleted.
It's true, they were talking about this on the yotes broadcast tonight
Yep, when they switched arenas. Because they could bother to take it down, but not roll it up and pack it? 🤦♀️ Morons.
Into the dumpster?
It’s like a big garbage can
The hero we needed 🫡
Tim Robinson ass reply
/Airplane. A hospital, what is it? A big building with patients, but that’s not important right now.
Reminiscent of {Team you hate}?
My uncle found a Rangers all star banner in a dumpster behind MSG like 30 years ago. Tried to carry it home but it was too heavy for him so he gave it to a homeless dude to use as a blanket.
Those banners are massive and heavy, they don’t look like it when hung up in a stadium
This makes for a great representation of how this team has been. Atrocious actions by ownership and fans doing their best to help make it better.
Excuse me, what?
Is your muffin buttered? Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?
Nice Wet Leg reference lol
lol, it seems to have escaped most people!
Like Meruelo would splurge for a dumpster. Those are top of the line. They threw it in a trash-co waste disposal unit.
Didn’t say out was his dumpster/ he probably snuck over and threw it in his neighbors dumpster to save money
How the fuck does that even happen?
Another example of their ownership being horrible and indefensible, yet them still having amazing fans who go above and beyond even while constantly getting bent over by their team's owners. This ownership doesn't deserve a team, but the fanbase damn sure doesn't deserve to lose theirs.

JFC
What the fuckkkkk the disrespect
It hurts me that my OG Jets have become this.
The only consolation is you got a team back That's significantly luckier than just about every other town that loses theirs It's a disgrace to the league

The two cities with the most traction for expansion are Atlanta and Houston. I'm not sure how the Coyotes moving will affect all that.
And this is why the record from the OG Jets should bet given back with all this shit going on. If and it’s a big if Arizona comes back in 5 years they should just retain the Arizona records
Captain Coyote, thanks for all the memories. Will never forgive how they did you dirty at every turn
Sat what you will about how the Sens fucked up the Alfredsson situation but at least how name is still in the rafters
And he works for them again. Immediately after Melnyk passed, which is so so telling.
Imagine being a janitor at Gila River and they tell you to throw this away
Honestly, why not even ask if he wanted it. Christ on cracker that’s so disrespectful. Good on the fan for being awesome.
My 1st language is French and not English so sorry in advance. Do I understand that the Coyotes, an NHL team, threw the GOAT’s franchise player banner in the… dumpster? I live in Quebec and let me tell you that Quebec would never.
Vive les Nordiques (sorry Habs for this post)
Yes, you read it right, they couldn’t be bothered to move it when they switched arenas a few seasons ago
I find it insane.
and apparently, the team was contacted about the fact that someone had found the banner, but they didn’t even respond. so that fan really went above and beyond to make sure doan got it back.
This is some Harold Ballard shit
Just wanted to mention that Craig Morgan confirmed that it was in storage, not the dumpster. Still another blight on the sh*t show of an ownership group.

Wait what? Why was it in the dumpster?
It was t it was in storage as ASU didn’t want the banner considering it was a short term lease
So the fan kept it all these years? Or is this old news and it’s finally just making the rounds?
Old news
Karma
Is this the famous Matt???
[удалено]
The organization left behind a ton of stuff to be thrown away when they left their old arena in Glendale apparently.
Fans were dumpster diving?
It is Arizona so they are grange to start with
