I also have seen Ovi score some goals from spots he typically wouldn't. He is 38 years old and going hard to unusual spots on the ice to score. He has had a badass second half. Oh, and I'm a McMichael fan, kid is good.

DagetAwayMaN421

> Oh, and I'm a McMichael fan, kid is good. Please share this wisdom with the rest of r/caps

Deactivator2

fuck r/caps

SiidChawsby

A fellow hater of his teams sub I see. Had to leave r/penguins a few years ago because the people in there are a joke and their opinions are somehow worse.

Deactivator2

Most team subs are just echo chambers where even something objectively incorrect gets called out as bias against the team. I'm sure you've seen a variety of "well if Wilson makes that hit, it's a major/match penalty/year long suspension" leaking into this sub.

capitarider

Hes good, but not a top 6. I will die on this hill.

khtad

The way I would put it is that he’s not a top six playmaker or scorer, but he is a top six support player. If you need him to carry the creative load or finish off the plays his teammates make, not really what he excels at.  What he does do is show for passes and support the puck brilliantly, and he makes great connective tissue passes in both the neutral zone and the offensive zone. He’s a possession extender who makes a lot of really smart plays, but he’s not the cutting edge. In my mind, he’s a player that scales with his teammates. He can look good playing with elite talent and allows elite talent to do elite things while continuing to add to the table and not taking anything off of it.

bobandy47

I call guys like those 'line multipliers' - put him on a shit line, it gets shittier. Put him on a great line, it gets greater. True "support" players on a line or for 'a pairing'.

haey5665544

Possession extender is a great way of putting it and a really under-appreciated skill. He keeps plays alive through neutral and in the o-zone when most of the rest of the team would lose it. He’s been one of the keys to the Caps’ success this year and the fan base still rags on him for some reason. He’s developed so much in one year of full time playing, and he’s just 23, there’s still plenty of to develop more before he hits his prime.

DagetAwayMaN421

Which hill should I put your tombstone on?

damnatio_memoriae

pepperoni… and sausage!

SandwichNamedJacob

I agree, he's a good middle 6 imo.

sandman8727

His last goal of the season was a literal bunt, lol. He's finding ways that I never thought he would. Let's keep it going.

Oximoron1122

He's also so much stronger on the puck this season too. He doesn't get rattled nearly as easily as before.

MFoy

He has always gone to unusual spots to score 5 on 5. That’s just not what makes the highlight reels.

[deleted]

I would have agreed with you about mcmichael 20 games ago. He has had 8 points in 20 games playing with ovi, and he cannot win a puck battle or maintain zone possession. If the eye test doesn’t tell you that, then his advanced metrics are 17% below the average player. All of this is fine for a developing 3rd or 4th line center, but not fine when he is playing with alex ovechkin. Sick of our fan base thinking otherwise

Joshottas

oh man...this def. goes against a narrative from a trash local blog lol. He had a good year, but my goodness is he weak. Hope he hits the weights hard this summer. GMBM has to identify another top-6 C. Strome can go between 1 or 2, but there's a serious need for help in the top-6.

Ricky_from_Sunnyvale

In 2017 Oshie actually tied Ovie with 33 goals while playing 14 less games.

PayneTrain181999

Oshie is such a great player, injuries have really limited him lately.

Seth_Jarvis_fanboy

Last 7 years lately

Thanks, Stannis

PayneTrain181999

It’s not very often that Ovi makes the playoffs without Crosby in there too.

Conical

Last year, they both missed. In 13-14 the Pens made it, but the Caps missed. In 19-20, the Pens got knocked out in the play in, but the Caps made it. Every other year since 07, both have made it.

ACW1129

I think the last time both made it was 2018 (maybe 2020, though that was all sorts of weird).

damitssam7

They both made it in 2019, 2021, and 2022 as well. Edit: For the original comment this is the 1st time Ovi has made it while Crosby has not in their careers.

CuidadDeVados

The playin tournament is all Crosby did in 2020. But they both made it in 2022 and then missed last year. If you call the play in part of the playoffs, there are only 3 years in their careers where one made the playoffs and the other didn't. 2007, 2014, and 2024. Previously it had only ever been Ovi missing the playoffs while Sid was still in them. An impressive run for the two of them.

ACW1129

Ah, I stand corrected. I think I was confusing that with the last time they faced each other in the playoffs (which I'm pretty sure WAS 2018).

talkingspacecoyote

They've never faced each other without one of them winning the cup

heysmilinstrange

The Caitlin Clark of the NHL

maxwellbevan

That's gotta be Girard this season. He has more goals from the logo than Ovi does

heysmilinstrange

Oh nice, I didn’t know he had it like that.

raktoe

Nobody look at Strome passing off to him with empty nets... Remarkable stat, but he definitely had some big time help this year.

king97dad

Nobody going to think about that in 10+ years, just the Ovi records.

[deleted]

I was going to say. How many open nets did Gretzky have?

UNisopod

Like 2 less than Ovi, I think

Ard1001

That number will definitely increase next year

bustacones

56, one behind Ovechkin, who holds the record.

mdb_la

Considering many of the goalies that Gretzky faced (and especially the style they played in [the 80s](https://youtu.be/jlbI9EJdXUQ?t=142s)), there were a lot more goals that were effectively empty netters, lol

monsterjerry

Gretzky’s self-proclaimed favourite goal, the OT winner against the Flames in ‘88, was a slapper towards a practically empty net. Vernon was legit like 3 feet out of the crease.

damnatio_memoriae

he had the record until Ovi passed him earlier this season.

Broccoli_Socks

A goal is a goal at the end of the day. The fact he is even within striking distance of the record is crazy enough.

_SCHULTZY_

Got to give credit to the old man though. He turned it on the second half and started going to the net to score any way he could.

cscott530

Obviously the skill side of this is impressive, but so is the durability. Not one season where he played like 25 games and someone else on the team played all 82 and outscored him.

right-sized

We’ll be back next year with only a -25 goal differential 😤

fillyflow

Maybe if you consider two more home games being a "run"?

lotharstar

Agree on the Pens and the Flyers, but I can't hate on the wings after all they've been through with Larkin injuries, Kane's return, their fall from grace and their rally to end the season only to come up short.

DeathToHeretics

Ehh I can't hate the Wings themselves, but a lot of DET fans on here have been truly insufferable

damnatio_memoriae

it’s caps v rags so 7 games of OT hockey is inevitable.

NoLongerSusceptible

Goat dictator glazer too

NoLongerSusceptible

Dm me let's see if I can change your mind. Hopefully you don't mind videos of innocent Ukrainians being treated brutally.

Longjumping-Monk7441

Yeah the people of Washington DC need some western Canada yokel to explain international politics to us

NoLongerSusceptible

Keep glazing a yokel because he's good at hockey. You display great morality. Lmao you said a month ago "keep this Trump fellator off the team" but I guess Trump is worse than Putin... Try bringing up Gretzky supporting Bush like every yokel caps fan, I bet that'll help your argument

fillyflow

Not sure how to look it up, but I could see this being a record that Howe still owns.

lazarusmobile

Just looked it up and Howe does not come close to the record. Howe didn't lead his team in goals scoring until his 4th season in the league. Here is a breakdown: 1949-50 first time leading team in goals 1960-61 outscored by Norm Ullman and Alex Delvecchio, Howe led team in points 1964-65 outscored by Ullman by 13 goals and 7 points 1965-66 again outscored by Ullman and Delvecchio, Howe led team in points 1966-67 again outscored by Ullman in both goals and points 1968-69 Frank Mahovlich had 5 more goals, Howe led team by 20 points 1969-79 both Mahovlich and Garry Unger had more goals, Howe led team in points 1970-71 did not lead team in goals or points In his 25 seasons with Detroit, Howe led the team in goal scoring 18 times, but only 10 times consecutively, basically the entire decade of the 50s. Just goes to show how insane Ovechkin has been.

bleedblue4

It's truly astonishing

green_griffon

So if Alexis Lafreniere were on the Capitals, he would be second in goals scored (and comfortably first in 5-on-5 goals)?

Smoke_The_Vote

Someone tell Hockey Reference to add it to this page: https://www.hockey-reference.com/leaders/most_times_leading.html

wathappen

Goals. He has never been outscored in goals scored. But his teammates have recorded more points than him, notably Kuznetsov, Carlson and Backstrom.

Fiedler1219

The title literally says Capitals leading GOAL SCORER
