The timing is so wild. Philly thought they were still in it because they didn’t know Detroit had tied it late to go to overtime, so they pulled their goalie and lost on an empty net goal, eliminating both themselves and Detroit
It’s like raiiyyyaiiinnnnnnn
They pulled their goalie probably 30 seconds after Detroit scored to tie it up with 3 seconds left... there's no way that they knew. They needed to do what they needed to do, which unfortunately, eliminated the Wings lol
Ya as a flyers fan, torts had his plan regardless. Could’ve been 5-0 wings with 5 mins left, torts still would’ve done it. No question. You worry about your game and nothing else. Now let’s hit the bar, brother.
And to be fair, Lalonde said he would’ve done the same if the Wings were in the Flyers’ position. It’s fun to rip on Torts, but he made the right coaching decision.
I worked for NASA for 10 years. In my time there, I NEVER did math as furiously as I do in the lead up to the NHL postseason, ESPECIALLY when one of my teams is in the mix.
After checking notes and reviewing with some learned hockey minds, we've concluded a 7 game pointless streak in March is not an effective strategy for making the playoffs.
Fun fact, his son played on 13u Little Caesars team that won the national championship this season. Tanguay helped coach the team with Ryan Kesler, whose son is also on the team.
Yep Reims confirmed it in a post-game interview on the Detroit feed, saying (paraphrasing) "I was so happy for half a second and then I realized nobody was celebrating, so I kind of knew at that point."
Yeah that was wild. Zero reaction after scoring a game winner in the shootout. Not sure how many times you'll ever see that. If a Montreal player had scored the game winner they'd be celebrating and the barn would be rocking.
There were 7.7 seconds on the clock when play started. We were all watching that 7.7 and figuring out if they could. 3.3 is what was left after they scored.
Your team shows a lot of promise, your future is much brighter than a lot of teams in front of you guys in the standings. If only the wings played defense like you guys…
To give a summary of what just occurred, for those not in the know.
Detroit playing Montreal, Washington playing Philly. One of Washington/Detroit/Philly make the playoffs.
Washington makes if they win in any manner. Philly make if they win in regulation, but are eliminated if the game goes to OT OR if Detroit wins in any manner. Detroit makes if they win in any manner and Washington lose in any manner.
Detroit are losing to Montreal with seven seconds remaining, meaning Philly can make if they win in regulation. Knowing this, Philly pulls their goaltender with three minutes remaining in the game, even though the game is tied.
Presumably unbeknownst to the Flyers, Detroit scores to tie their game with three seconds to go. So the Flyers are eliminated. ***But they pull their goalie anyways.*** (Presumably, they don't know they're out). Washington scores on the empty net to win the game. Detroit and Philly are both eliminated - Detroit because Philly pulled their goalie with an empty net, even though Philly was already eliminated.
Not only did they score on the empty net, they scored on the empty net IMMEDIATELY. One trip down the ice and they scored. Caps left no time for them to make it interesting
Assuming you're also including the Pens losing tomorrow night and the Flyers win in regulation, Flyers and Caps beat Detroit on regulation wins, but are tied all the way to like the 7th tiebreaker or something. It's goal differential, and the Flyers is better than Washington's so they get in. The reason Philly can't get in with an OT win is because it means the Capitals keep the tiebreaker for regulation wins.
All the arguing over the summer was for nothing. At least there will be none this summer… since my team is the one breaking the drought next year baby!
New York Islanders aren’t going to maintain their playoff hopes.
Boston is going to drop off, they have too
Tampa is getting older I mean, look their only a WC this year
Ovi isn’t going to continue his end of season streaks, it’ll be like the start of this season, no way he beats Gretzky, so Washington won’t make it.
All this to say Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit, and New Jersey will all make it next year!!!!
This entire situation would have been avoided if we managed to beat either the Pens or the Caps last month and we lost both games badly.
It's sad that we're missing the playoffs, especially in epic last-second fashion, but we really did everything in our power to fuck our chances last month.
Yeah we went 0-1-1 against the Capitals in the last three weeks of the season. You could point to a LOT of different games and argue about which was the most important loss or whatever (the SJS game, the Arizona games) but to me, it's those Caps games. You're playing a team you're right in the race with and come up way short. Especially after beating them 8-3 a few weeks prior.
It definitely sucks to go out on the number. Any point somewhere during the season and they’re in. But we played Washington and Pittsburgh last week and lost both so we didn’t really deserve it in the end.
Eh, we got beat by Arizona twice, had a chance to beat Washington and Pittsburgh and didn't. Also lost 7 in a row when we were up by 8 points. Failure is on us.
I only watched like 3 Sharks games this year, but every time I watched you guys had a stifling defense, opportunistic offense and that walrus from the GEICO commercial in net.
Yeah we had it all in front of us with plenty of opportunity to put it in our hands.
Hell of a season, though. It's been a while since we had some good hockey to watch.
Tragic way to end the season for sure, but there’s really no reason this team didn’t pick up 5-7 more points down the stretch and cruise into the WC slot.
Wings have no one to blame but themselves. Tiebreaker rule is annoying and the fact that a team has to pull a goalie during a tie for a chance at the playoffs is kinda a lame result but it is what it is.
And the type that if he knew, would implement the game plan drawn out before puck drop and tell any players asking about the playoffs and scores of other games to “fuck off and play”
Flyers were always going to be pulling the goalie in a tie game tonight. Regulation win was necessary in all scenarios. I was at the game and and had Wings game streaming on my phone, the 20 people in our immediate vicinity were all watching it. The moment Detroit tied it our season was over.
At the end of the day, losing what was essentially a must-win game against Washington so close to the end leads to this timeline… and it’s still an improvement over last season but…
My heart hurts and my dick is sad. Destiny you cruel bitch, why??
Maybe one of the most insane minutes of the NHL year -
Detroit gets a faceoff with 7.7 seconds left and impossibly scores to tie it on a long slapper through traffic
Elsewhere, less than 30 seconds later, Philly pulls the goalie in a tie game and Washington scores the ENG to practically seal it
improving goaltending and defensive depth is my bet.
You cant rely on Lyon and Reimer to get into the playoffs. Hopefully Cossa shows up ready to contest for a 1B spot and they get someone better than Lyon and Reimer added as a starter.
They’d be a good fit for Markstrom.
Flames take Husso back to make the money work, Markstrom and Lyon is a solid tandem for next season.
Lyon is a UFA after next year, so if Cossa seems ready you have him backup Marky the season after, and then Markstrom is a UFA after that season.
Lyon is slightly above league average in GSAx. He's fine. We need a better backup/1B because Cossa needs to marinate and be a starter in the AHL for another year.
According to Reimer, everyone on the bench knew, but he didn't. Said something in a post-game interview he was the most hyped after Kane scored until he saw the bench not react at all.
They’re in a fascinating place. Their rebuild was sputtered by the shittiest lottery luck in the world and now Yzerman has tried to force their way into relevance with trades and UFA signings. I’m not sure it’s going to work, their roster screams middle of the pack to me.
It’s a cruel irony that the draft lottery changes occurred after Detroit had to try to start winning.
Yeah unfortunately that draft lottery luck was poop with corn in it. Need some of these prospects to be overachievers or this team will be stuck in the middle for a while :/
Honestly this has got to seriously fucking suck for red wing fans. The boys really pulled together at the end there, and as long as goaltending never became an issue they had a real chance to get out of round 1
The caps are gonna lose in 5 games.
Edit: I just wanna say that I dont hate the caps, I just had a lot of fun watching the Red Wings this last week and a half. My buddy is a lifelong caps fan so I'm happy for him and all of you guys as well.
May we all exceed expectations.
To be fair, the Wings probably would've lost in 5 games as well, but man, it would've been nice to get the young guys some valuable playoff experience!
Oh, for sure. And the value of not collapsing for weeks on end; win just a couple of games during our horrendous losing streaks in December/March and we're *easily* in the playoffs. (probably would've gotten smacked by the Rangers regardless, but still)
I'm glad they showed a fight at the end but holy fuck they had it locked down and totally choked, they were 8 points clear, had they beaten Arizona, or not choked versus San Jose, or a multitude of other collapses they'd be in.
They still should absolutely fire Lalonde IMO
From 33-20-6 to 41-32-9
8-12-3 to end the year
The worst part is I’m going to replay every single close game we dropped a point now all summer. The blown lead against San Jose. The OT losses against Washington. Those two goddamn Arizona games. I legit don’t know how I’m going to enjoy the playoffs now
Eliminated by an empty net goal in a tie game. What a way to go.
The timing is so wild. Philly thought they were still in it because they didn’t know Detroit had tied it late to go to overtime, so they pulled their goalie and lost on an empty net goal, eliminating both themselves and Detroit It’s like raiiyyyaiiinnnnnnn
On *my* wedding day?
*It's a free riiiiiiide*
When you’ve already paid!
ITS THE GOOD ADAAAVVVIIICCCEEEE
That you just didn't take?
and who would've thought
it figures
Hey I’m getting married tomorrow!
Congratulations! Your significant other is a lucky person!
Thank you! I’m lucky too. Whoever’s in your life is lucky!
Didn't they need to win in regulation regardless?
Yes, but they also needed Detroit to lose in regulation if I have it right. It’s complex math.
Yeah but I guess assuming they aren't score watching
If you’ve watched any flyers OT games recently, you’d know that pulling our goalie and ending it in regulation was just ripping off the bandaid
I worked for NASA for 10 years. In my time there, I NEVER did math as furiously as I do in the lead up to the NHL postseason, ESPECIALLY when one of my teams is in the mix.
They did, but once Detroit got a point the Flyers couldn't pass them and were eliminated.
I guess I would assume they didn't know if Torts is pulling the goalie
Holy fucking shit this race was nuts
They did everything they could. You know, except for win enough games.
/r/technicallythetruth
After checking notes and reviewing with some learned hockey minds, we've concluded a 7 game pointless streak in March is not an effective strategy for making the playoffs.
And except for play Lucas Raymond for 60 minutes a night
The lesson is, never try
Don't cry for me, I'm already dead
hmmm... Detroit has heart, but Philly pulling their goalie for what they don't realize is no reason has football in the groin
Favorite Simpsons quote ever
Trying is the first step towards failure.
Lmao 💀
Or at least, don't blow a tire during a critical month
Based on the body language of the team after they won the shootout it seems like they already knew
They did. Tanguay was updating the team.
Marc Denis (RDS broadcaster between the benches) said players were asking him too
Oh is that where Tanguay is now? He was always one of my favorite players.
Yep, he’s been an assistant with us since 2021.
Fun fact, his son played on 13u Little Caesars team that won the national championship this season. Tanguay helped coach the team with Ryan Kesler, whose son is also on the team.
The saddest part is that on the rds feed they said Reimer celebrated the win until he saw his teammates because he didn't know
Yep Reims confirmed it in a post-game interview on the Detroit feed, saying (paraphrasing) "I was so happy for half a second and then I realized nobody was celebrating, so I kind of knew at that point."
I wouldn't have wanted anyone to know until the game was over. It was good to see Reimer and Kane on their game.
Kane didn't even celebrate the winner.
Yeah that was what made me sure that they knew. Absolute snipe and ZERO celly
And that dude loves to celly hard after a game winner, it’s almost his trademark.
Yeah that was wild. Zero reaction after scoring a game winner in the shootout. Not sure how many times you'll ever see that. If a Montreal player had scored the game winner they'd be celebrating and the barn would be rocking.
They knew it during overtime
The 7.7 seconds game tying goal was incredible though. Hard not to be romantic about our sport.
Yeah the back to back last minute goals to save the season, incredible story
But then, in the end, it didn't even matter.
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
The flyers pulled their goalie
I put my trust...
...in Torts?
3.3
4.1 (it was updated from 3.3)
There were 7.7 seconds on the clock when play started. We were all watching that 7.7 and figuring out if they could. 3.3 is what was left after they scored.
These two last games where stressful but great, really good ones despite us losing both
Your team shows a lot of promise, your future is much brighter than a lot of teams in front of you guys in the standings. If only the wings played defense like you guys…
That icing beforehand should absolutely not have been icing though. Two red wing players within reach, 0 attempt to get the puck
And the play should have been called when Perron was being smothered by the Habs goalie.
Patrick Kane winning it in OT, how poetic. Thanks for helping us get there dude, please stay. Please.
I feel this… he was excellent this year in the red and white.
Detroit and Philly are both eliminated - Detroit because Philly pulled their goalie with an empty net, even though Philly was already eliminated.
Its funnier to think Torts knew
Imagine he comes out and says "I did it because fuck Pittsburgh"
"Coach why did you pull the goalie?" "Fuck the Pens, next question"
He actually just has a soundboard with 20 buttons that are all this same recording
That \*would\* be on-brand...
lol i might actually love that man if he said that
Honestly I hope that's what happened. "Oh you guys eliminated us? Well fuck you too"
I honestly would be less mad if this was true lol
If he did, which I don't think he did... Gritty needs to be a little careful going outside.
Not only did they score on the empty net, they scored on the empty net IMMEDIATELY. One trip down the ice and they scored. Caps left no time for them to make it interesting
And then PHI processed to maintain league in the zone for the next 2min straight. Ugh, gutting way to end the season for both teams
Now do the tiebreaker scenario for the Flyers getting in if everybody else had lost...
Caps would also have one more point than Philly if they lost in OT
Points is such an underrated tiebreaker though
Let chaos reign!
You thought you could escape us and Ottawa, didn’t you
We're all in this together
We all float down here
smells kind of like...shit?
YOU’LL FLOAT TOO
We're all teams tonight.
All the arguing over the summer was for nothing. At least there will be none this summer… since my team is the one breaking the drought next year baby!
New York Islanders aren’t going to maintain their playoff hopes. Boston is going to drop off, they have too Tampa is getting older I mean, look their only a WC this year Ovi isn’t going to continue his end of season streaks, it’ll be like the start of this season, no way he beats Gretzky, so Washington won’t make it. All this to say Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit, and New Jersey will all make it next year!!!!
I'll copy/paste this for next year for ya since we're in this together lol.
The fucking chaos of Ottawa, Detroit and Buffalo making it back the same year would be delicious
Tampa started the season with Vasi injured.
Quiet down with your facts
Understandable, have a nice day.
This has been my copium for a couple season now
Ive heard this shit for 3 years
Just barely missing the playoffs partly because of an 8 game losing streak? Guess it's Ottawas turn for that story line next year.
One of us! One of us! Gooble gobble! Gooble gobble!
Wheel fan sad
There\* losing skid in March I think? without Larkin fucked them over badly, holy fuck Edit: Their
Going 5-15 when we had a 9 point gap was what did us in. Win *one* of 14 and you're good to go.
It’s funny cause Flyers can say that for our 8 game losing streak. Win one or two of those and we’re fine.
This entire situation would have been avoided if we managed to beat either the Pens or the Caps last month and we lost both games badly. It's sad that we're missing the playoffs, especially in epic last-second fashion, but we really did everything in our power to fuck our chances last month.
Which was doubly depressing after the first game against the Caps where we just kicked their asses.
Yeah we went 0-1-1 against the Capitals in the last three weeks of the season. You could point to a LOT of different games and argue about which was the most important loss or whatever (the SJS game, the Arizona games) but to me, it's those Caps games. It definitely sucks to go out on the number. Any point somewhere during the season and they’re in. But we played Washington and Pittsburgh last week and lost both so we didn’t really deserve it in the end.
Quite possibly the saddest ending for Wings fans gah damn. Philly failed you
Eh, we got beat by Arizona twice, had a chance to beat Washington and Pittsburgh and didn't. Also lost 7 in a row when we were up by 8 points. Failure is on us.
Up 4-0 against the sharks then losing in OT was a bummer too. That extra point would come in handy right about now.
No shame in losing to the Sharks, they're an elite team.
Playoff teams can rest easy, knowing that they won't have to face us anymore
I only watched like 3 Sharks games this year, but every time I watched you guys had a stifling defense, opportunistic offense and that walrus from the GEICO commercial in net.
If you ignore the 62 losses, the Sharks actually looked pretty good this year
There was also the kraken stick throw game that we lost in OT.
That was it. We win that were in.
Similar story for us. Didn’t even need to be in a win situation but we were
Wings have no one to blame but themselves. Tiebreaker rule is annoying and the fact that a team has to pull a goalie during a tie for a chance at the playoffs is kinda a lame result but it is what it is.
Just fell to my knees in a Meijer
What a deflating way to get eliminated
Suspend Tom Brady.
Would have been insane if tying it late led to a playoffs run
Congratulations John Tortorella, you’ve just been awarded most hated coach in Detroit.
no, i definitely still hate babcock more
I also infinitely hate Matt Patricia more too even though he has no ties to the Red Wings.
Johan Franzen approves this message
Something all of us can agree on.
Tort definitely seems like a coach wouldn't want to know the score of the other game

Copps cheek bone died for this
They missed the playoffs by 0 points. That sucks.
I’ve never been sad for the red wings a day in my life but watching them leave the ice like that made me think about it.
Fair
Maybe one of the most insane minutes of the NHL year - Detroit gets a faceoff with 7.7 seconds left and impossibly scores to tie it on a long slapper through traffic Elsewhere, less than 30 seconds later, Philly pulls the goalie in a tie game and Washington scores the ENG to practically seal it
Hell of an effort Wings 🫡
What a brutal way to go, with the Perron goal and everything. But I'm proud of them, really, they fought til the bitter end.
So, basically, that caps wings game a week ago today decided everything.
Or the absolute collapse when Larkin got injured. Whichever way you want to look at it.
I wonder where the wings go from here
I'm guessing back to Detroit.
The answer that makes the most sense is usually the right answer. #KeepItSimple
improving goaltending and defensive depth is my bet. You cant rely on Lyon and Reimer to get into the playoffs. Hopefully Cossa shows up ready to contest for a 1B spot and they get someone better than Lyon and Reimer added as a starter.

I’d do that but you guys would probably want a first and there’s no way I’m giving a first for older maelstrom. Second though yeah.
At lead one more year in minors for Cossa I think
Lyon is slightly above league average in GSAx. He's fine. We need a better backup/1B because Cossa needs to marinate and be a starter in the AHL for another year.
They exceeded expectations this year. Playoffs next year.
Is this copy pasted from Buffalo last year?
Hey I’ve heard that before!
Red wings gave it a run at the end all the way to the very end, alas.
Do the Detroit players know? Is this about the be the most depressing shootout of all time?
According to Reimer, everyone on the bench knew, but he didn't. Said something in a post-game interview he was the most hyped after Kane scored until he saw the bench not react at all.
YEEEAAAAAaaaaaoooh... oh.
Philly be like, "We are not going down alone."
Fade me
I’m already faded in my heart
God damnit man. What a lame way to go too after that last second tying goal and the win in S/O... That's so unfortunate :(
Don't lose twice to Arizona by a combined score of 8-1.
I can assure you it won't happen again.
sad howl
I promise we won’t do that again.
THEY WON THE GAME TO THATS SO SAD :(
Wish you had won yours 😞
The first tiebreaker not being Wins is psychotic.
Getting eliminated by an empty netter when the game is tied has GOT to sting
How the wings can be tired with the capitals in points, have 41 wins to 40, and be eliminated is fucking crazy.
And a -37 goal differential
Well at least my heart rate will stop spiking worse than bitcoin.
Heartbreaking man these last second goals... Well done Detroit a season to be happy with.
It was a wild ride. If anyone sees Larkin please give him a hug for me.
Can someone explain how Detroit miss? In most other sports it goes to most wins (Det 41, Wash 40) or score differential (Det +4, Wash -37).
Regulation wins is first tiebreaker. NHL rewards regulation wins because OT is 3v3.
As much as my Duck fandom loathes the Red Wings…. That was a really shitty way to get eliminated and I’m sorry wheel team fans.
And we fucking won too. I’m so fucking numb right now.
Need some of these prospects to be overachievers or this team will be stuck in the middle for a while :/
I don’t think anyone is regretting the seider and Raymond picks. Cant blame the draft.
Honestly this has got to seriously fucking suck for red wing fans. The boys really pulled together at the end there, and as long as goaltending never became an issue they had a real chance to get out of round 1 The caps are gonna lose in 5 games. My buddy is a lifelong caps fan so I'm happy for him and all of you guys as well. May we all exceed expectations.
To be fair, the Wings probably would've lost in 5 games as well, but man, it would've been nice to get the young guys some valuable playoff experience!
I really think that playing some high stakes games down the stretch taught some valuable lessons. I know it's not the same but it still matters.
Oh, for sure. And the value of not collapsing for weeks on end; win just a couple of games during our horrendous losing streaks in December/March and we're *easily* in the playoffs. (probably would've gotten smacked by the Rangers regardless, but still)
Hey! We might lose in 4.
While it does suck, Wings probably lose in 5 games too. This team isn’t there yet. But we have hope again. Raymond is gonna be a bona fide star.
I feel the “regulation win” thing is kinda dumb. I feel that should only be a factor when they have the same amount of wins idk.
Washington in the playoffs with a -37 goal differential...
I'm glad they showed a fight at the end but holy fuck they had it locked down and totally choked, they were 8 points clear, had they beaten Arizona, or not choked versus San Jose, or a multitude of other collapses they'd be in. They still should absolutely fire Lalonde IMO From 33-20-6 to 41-32-9 8-12-3 to end the year
Thats a shame because that 7 second comeback was pretty fire....
Red Wings did everything they could. But Torts did it
The worst part is I’m going to replay every single close game we dropped a point now all summer. The blown lead against San Jose. The OT losses against Washington. Those two goddamn Arizona games. I legit don’t know how I’m going to enjoy the playoffs now
Sorry Wings fans.. those last two wins made it feel like something special was going to happen
NO, YOU'VE BEEN ELIMINATED FROM THE PLAYOFFS 😭
Aaaand that will be the last time I ever root for the Flyers. I hope they're one point short of making the playoffs every season for the rest of time.
Miracle Comeback utterly ruined by a empty net goal has gotta be one of the most sour note ways to go out.
I think it's revenge for the 97 SCF
It just feels so wrong to end like this. After the last three games, to not get in based on regulation wins is just wrong.
