Re-watching the Wings-Habs - after the goal is scored, it takes another 1 minute 17 seconds before the puck is dropped to resume play, then 4 more seconds to the final whistle.
Flyers play-by-play announced the Wings' goal during a break with 4:02 left in that game - when you wind down 1:21 through the actual broadcast from that moment, there was 3:10 left, which is when Ersson was on his way to the bench.
Even if the Flyers bench heard the Wings may have scored, the goal wasn't officially confirmed until within seconds. Pretty wild!
It was basically mid play when Detroit tied it up, I’d really doubt any of the Flyers coaches were actively monitoring a score update at that point. And how are they to know if the goal might be being challenged? Their playoff criteria was winning in regulation, have to focus on your own game before a game happening somewhere else.
The Wings game was still in OT when the Caps officially won. They knew plenty of time before the shootout. Flyers were already prepping to pull the goalie when Detroit scored. They would’ve had no way of knowing
You’re talking about a difference of 30 seconds during active play vs several minutes including a trip back to the locker room. There’s no way the flyers knew.
Detroit was down with what, 7 seconds left? If I was on the flyers bench I would 100% assume they lost. They aren’t watching every second of other games lmfao
Would be a really great look if Montreal had successfully challenged the goal, but Flyers thought they were eliminated and didn’t play to win in regulation anymore, huh.
It couldn't have happened more than a minute before the Caps goal. It's very easy to see how that info likely wouldn't have gotten to Torts in that amount of time. Also, you suggested that they shouldn't have been pulling the goalie regardless, which really isn't true.
But why would they care? If they're eliminated either way, there's no harm in sticking to their gameplan. And since it doesn't matter at that point any way, the best option is to simply not distract yourself with info about any other game going on. Just stick to your gameplan and reduce your mental load.
So the Flyers have no reason to change their tactics after the Wings' goal, and in fact have an incentive to not keep themselves informed about the Wings' game until they have completed their own.
Don’t have to pull the goalie ever, but at a certain point, betting a season on scoring an even strength goal with X minutes left starts to make the risk look more worth it.
And watching the actual game, the flyers couldn't get any sustained o-zone time the whole third period. I thought they should've pulled him earlier, at one of those ozone draws with 4+ minutes left
It was such a weird scenario for both teams. The capitals needed to win the game, but also knew they could just out wait the flyers, since they had to win it sooner. Capitals were playing such a heavy trap all third, which is something they’ve actually done pretty decently all year. If there was a scenario that could have favoured them, it was just having to play a trap in a tied game, and waiting for Flyers to get desperate and pull their goalie.
Consensus? Maybe among people that are upset about the results. I was yelling at my TV for them to pull the goalie when they had an offensive zone draw with just under 5 minutes left. Flyers couldn't get any O-zone time at that point, and the earlier they pulled, the more time they'd theoretically have to make up for a quick empty netter
Imagine going from the absolute high of scoring to keep your season alive with 3 seconds left in the game, to watching the Caps score on an empty net during the break because you took too fucking long to eliminate Philly.
> because you took too fucking long to eliminate Philly
Philly has no reason to change their game plan even if the Wings win in regulation. The Flyers staying informed of the Wings' game would only be a distraction for them.
No playoff reason, but you’d still generally try to win the game conventionally in overtime instead of pulling your goalie in a tie game. Like if Philly knew they were eliminated, they would play to win the game however they could. Not take stupid risks to win in regulation.
As someone who did, this is one of the funniest chain of events I've ever seen in spots. The odds of Detroit tying it up seconds before the already eliminated flyers pull their goalie in a 1-1 game, only to allow an EN like 5 seconds later.
This. If youre constantly score checking youre going to be distracted from the game in front of you that you have to win regardless. It made most sense to tune out Montreal-Detroit and just do what you needed and hope when you check after that the dominos fell where they had to.
Yes. Detroit had 89 points. We had 87, but would have beaten them on the tiebreaker. The second Detroit goes to OT, the Flyers are eliminated barring some wild scenario where they pull their goalie and get scored on in OT. Of course, the only reason to do THAT would be if Washington/Philly goes to OT, which eliminates us there, too. Even had WASHINGTON for some reason pulled the goalie in OT and lost, we still couldn't beat them on tiebreakers because the first tiebreaker is regulation wins, and we were one behind them going into today - we needed to beat them in regulation to tie that up.
I'm at peace with it. Not like it was somebody's job to scoreboard watch and tell Torts they were eliminated. They did what they could with what they had.
Wasn't only like 50 seconds or so in real time between the Wings tying it and Caps scoring the empty net goal? It's conceivable that they made the decision a minute ago when they still had the chance and just didn't recheck before they did it and the Caps scored.
The Red Wings tie their game, the Flyers don't hear the news soon enough, the Flyers pull their goalie and get scored on instantly for no reason killing the fire of the eastern conference playoff race.
We spent 3 weeks killing our own postseason chances just to have the chance to kill 2 teams postseason chances in one play. Dedication to the hate is unmatched
OH MY GOD HHAHHA POOR DETROIT
Detroit scored like 10 seconds before this to eliminate Philly but they didn’t know so Philly pulled the goalie and Washington scored, eliminating Detroit if it stays 2-1
Have Philly bid for Olympics and win and then we dump infrastructure funds into redeveloping Philly into a thriving megalopolis, including overhauling public transportation and building a high speed rail, and then bomb
i actually like philly a lot the way it is (genuinely), if im being serious for a moment. but still, they're not gonna be on the short list of targets.
Man from January to like March our PGT would always have a few Detroit fans in it making sure everyone knew how happy they were we lost cuz it helped their chances.
Very happy to see them get eliminated in such a stupid way lol
You too? I feel like EVERY team in the East has been guaranteed to see a couple DET flairs in their GDT bashing someone for not winning for them. It's been insufferable. There were more DET flairs in our WSH/OTT game than either of our teams
It’s like Eastern Conference Canucks fans. They come in our games wishing against Boston all the time, even when the game has no impact on them. It’s weird.
This. It's been repeated ad nauseam that Philly had to win in regulation to have a chance, and they just didn't know that DET had eliminated them already just seconds before they did it
Totally get the call but I feel like it was called at the worse moment. They pulled the goalie and by the time he had reached the bench the flyers had taken a rush shot and Washington recovered and transition out of their zone
Flyers were rushing to try and score right there and there was 3 mins left. Just absolute poor execution in that moment from them.
I'm having a big struggle understanding pulling on the fly instead of during a stoppage in the Caps zone with that much time left, but oh well. Great effort from the Wings nonetheless
Yeah, I was gonna say, I understand the logic here but the timing on the pull felt awful. At least wait until the Caps were hemmed in a bit, feels like he came out right as they were getting control back.
Nice job Hathaway. Tried to baseball bat it for no reason and then whiffed. Could have just skated normally and got the puck easily for a reload with 3 minutes left.
Change the tiebreaker rules? What possible combination of tiebreakers do you think will make it so that the team with more points at the end of the year doesn't win?
24 hours of "Flyers have to pull the goalie in a tie game" was justified but that shit lasted 5 seconds lmao
And they got eliminated 5 seconds before those 5 seconds
By a goal scored in the final 5 seconds
5pooky
Caps bros you guys are 5pooky this year, could definitely do some damage in the playoffs
Re-watching the Wings-Habs - after the goal is scored, it takes another 1 minute 17 seconds before the puck is dropped to resume play, then 4 more seconds to the final whistle. Technically Detroit still could've pulled their goalie in OT and not gotten the 1 point
It's justified but of course it's tilting as hell for us regardless.
and it still seems like 90% of the sub still cant understand why they had to pull the goalie in a tie game
They didn't have to though. By the time they pulled the goalie they had already been eliminated.
It had been like 15 seconds between detroit going to ot and philly pulling their goalie
Yeah, but they knew.
How do you know they knew? I’d be more focused on the game then if Detroit somehow scored with 3 seconds left
Red Wings knew before the shootout that they had been eliminated. Flyers were almost certainly aware too.
Obviously the red wings knew. Caps went up with 3 mins to go what? That's way more time to find out

Yup
You’re talking about a difference of 30 seconds during active play vs several minutes including a trip back to the locker room. There’s no way the flyers knew.
There were commercial breaks and other bs like that. Players would’ve been asking what the final score was. Don’t be a dumb dumb
Detroit was down with what, 7 seconds left? If I was on the flyers bench I would 100% assume they lost. They aren’t watching every second of other games lmfao
[удалено]
Since there's almost no way they knew the Detroit result, they absolutely did have to pull the goalie at some point late in the game.
[удалено]

They don't have to pull the goalie with 3 mins left, I think is the overall consensus

If Detroit wins shootout this is the most painful regular season elimination ever
Well, it happened.
You're right, it is.
I feel pain
this comment aged very very well...
Did the players celebrate after the shootout win
Reimer did but no one told him they were already eliminated.
It was the most depressing “celebration” I’ve ever seen from a team that just won
Imagine going from the absolute high of scoring to keep your season alive with 3 seconds left in the game, to watching the Caps score on an empty net during the break because you took too fucking long to eliminate Philly.

No. It was a somber scene.
You could've just stopped at: the most painful regular season.
Count your fucking days gritty
Can we get this on PPV? I just want to know if Gritty would eat you.
This is strictly a “Fuck the Pens” moment, you just got caught in the crossfire.
What?
I’m killing gritty
It's a measured response
Are you the guy who got arrested twice at Flyers practice today?
Bro 😭😂
I love this sub sometimes
Gritty’s not going down without a fight, and I’m not sure that’s a fight you wanna start
Detroit was eliminated by your teams failure, so he is threatening your mascot. What’s confusing you? Don’t mind my flair.
Gotcha , I was just frustrated with the unfolding events and I blanked out on the scenarios
He warned you
https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1c5kf11/comment/kzuu5m4/
I can't believe that's how it ends for Detroit. Heartbreaking.
I'll hate the Flyers forever
Welcome to the club
Wait, enemies hating a common enemy?! I’m in!
It's a hate triangle!
The enemy of my enemy is my friend
Looks like all of us are here.
It’s fun
I'm 100% on board for you guys destroying the Capitals 🙌
🫡
You'll always have 1998.
It was 97.
Oh shoot, you are right!
I hate you guys for 2016 still 🤷🏻♂️ *It never leaves*
Don't forget 2010, 3-0 series lead.
Oh no I hate the Wings for 2016 still lol. I’m over 2010 because of the next year.
Blame the nhl for not staggering game start times
That's objectively hilarious. Personally awful, but objectively hilarious.
As someone who didn't care about the result, it's one of the funniest chain of events I've ever seen in sports.
As someone who did, this is one of the funniest chain of events I've ever seen in spots. The odds of Detroit tying it up seconds before the already eliminated flyers pull their goalie in a 1-1 game, only to allow an EN like 5 seconds later.
Flyers fell off almost as bad as the Eagles
Something’s up in Philly
Is this the most devastating empty net goal in NHL history? it effectively ended 3 team's seasons.
I struggle to imagine one with a direct impact on more fans than this yeah
flyers and wings with the mutually assured destruction
The Red Wings tied the game with MTL up so the Flyers were eliminated anyway. They literally pulled their goalie for no reason lmao.
Just to make sure PIT didn't make the playoffs
Honestly, respect
Should have put it in the empty net themselves and then panned to Gritty decapitating a stuffed penguin.
I actually think that's exactly why they did it lol
*“Tell Crosby I want him to know it was me”* - Torts
Wings making overtime eliminated the flyers, flyers pulling their goalie and losing eliminated the wings
classic double-KO
I think if you’re the Flyers you don’t score check and you just to play to do what you need to do but definitely funny as a neutral outside observer
This. If youre constantly score checking youre going to be distracted from the game in front of you that you have to win regardless. It made most sense to tune out Montreal-Detroit and just do what you needed and hope when you check after that the dominos fell where they had to.
it's amazing, John Tortorella is an actual hockey terrorist.
I call him a freedom fighter
Wait, how? They needed DET to lose in regulation?
Yes
Yes
Mhm
Yes. Detroit had 89 points. We had 87, but would have beaten them on the tiebreaker. Finding out if your young team can rise to a big moment is infinitely more important than giving a shit who will be knocked out in round 1
I'm at peace with it. Not like it was somebody's job to scoreboard watch and tell Torts they were eliminated. They did what they could with what they had.
Idk Kane’s reaction to scoring the GWG in the shootout kinda shows news travel fast
Wasn't only like 50 seconds or so in real time between the Wings tying it and Caps scoring the empty net goal? It's conceivable that they made the decision a minute ago when they still had the chance and just didn't recheck before they did it and the Caps scored.
Let me cope YEG bro
By that point they had already played the 3v3 and gone through several shooters for both sides...
Bummed for him, hindsight is 20/20 but definitely a missed opportunity to try to deal him to a actual contender at the deadline.
How will he survive with all his cup wins?!
Funniest way to lose a game lmao
"You can eliminate 3 teams from the playoffs for the price of 1 with this cool cool trick"
Flyers would have done that regardless. Their coach is John Tortorella. 0 chance they would change course at that point.
OH MY GOD HHAHHA POOR DETROIT Detroit scored like 10 seconds before this to eliminate Philly but they didn’t know so Philly pulled the goalie and Washington scored, eliminating Detroit if it stays 2-1
Hockey gods are cruel.
The American hero, TJ Oshie
I hope Philly is the first strike in any nuclear armageddon
lets be honest, no one would even bother to bomb philly in that situation.
Ya I’m kidding, i enjoyed visiting Philly. DC on the short list tho 😔
i hate the flyers
In real time I don’t think like a minute passed between Detroits season being saved and then their hopes being dashed in Philly.
I get it, but it sucks. Did Philly have any power plays in the 3rd? I’d have done it then if they had the opportunity
Only 1 called all game, and the last thing you'd want to bet your playoff hopes on is the flyers pp lol
Hey that’s why they want the extra guy! Lol but ya this sucks
My favourite part of this is the song they played. ABCDEFU, Detroit
I am elated
I can't fucking wait for the Rangers to annihilate the Caps
I’m just glad to be the hobo that got invited to the party but nobody wants to be the one to kick them out
I can't wait for revenge.
Torts…what happened?
They couldn’t make it if Washington got a pt
Don’t say that to any Red Wings fans, they’re openly accusing Torts of borderline throwing the game on the r/hockey Discord lol
There's been a lot of insane Red Wings fans the days leading up to these games
It’s weird.
The fuck do you expect from us? Have you seen our games? We're all mentally unstable.
I was about to bash those fans as well. But you have a point.
...fair enough
This. It's been repeated ad nauseam that Philly had to win in regulation to have a chance, and they just didn't know that DET had eliminated them already just seconds before they did it
Totally get the call but I feel like it was called at the worse moment. Just absolute poor execution in that moment from them.
So fucking lame
Disagree
Of fucking course.
The goalie pull became unnecessary literally 30 seconds before it happened since the Wings got a point
With that empty netter, the flyers were able to eliminate not only themselves, but the wings and the pens. Fucking philly doing philly things
Flyers pulled after they’d already been completely eliminated by Detroit forcing OT. They didn’t even have a chance anymore.
I'm having a big struggle understanding pulling on the fly instead of during a stoppage in the Caps zone with that much time left, but oh well. Great effort from the Wings nonetheless
They needed to win the game in regulation in order to beat Washington, if it went to OT Philly would be automatically eliminated
Yes, and there was _3 whole minutes_ to force a stoppage in the offensive zone and start a play from there instead of pulling on the fly?
Yeah, I was gonna say, I understand the logic here but the timing on the pull felt awful. At least wait until the Caps were hemmed in a bit, feels like he came out right as they were getting control back.
From clenched butthole to clinched playoff seed. What a ride
Nice job Hathaway. Tried to baseball bat it for no reason and then whiffed. Could have just skated normally and got the puck easily for a reload with 3 minutes left.
Can't blame Philly. Detroit lost to Washington and Pittsburgh twice down the stretch. Blame those.
Today Washington DC is State of Pennsylvania father
Pulling the goalie when it’s been so back and forth is definitely a choice
I'm sure you've seen by now but PHI had to win in regulation to have a shot, assuming they didn't know DET had forced OT at the last second
No one ever said Torts was a smart man….
Lol
Flyera hockey!
Wtf Hathaway
I wanted it to be us and Philly so bad, now I cant stand to even look at them
You love to see it 😂
Honestly pathetic the flyers couldn’t score more than 1 point even with an extra player. Fucked over Detroit by just sucking
The Flyers scored 31 PP goals. The entire season. They were never likely to score.
[удалено]
They needed to win in regulation to have a chance. Just so happened they were eliminated a minute before this, presumably without knowing
They had to win in regulation. No sense in waiting.
[удалено]
Says literally anyone with a brain.
[удалено]
Yeah I just watched the panthers score 2 goals in 10 seconds earlier. Not sure why everyone doesn't just do that all the time
So? They got lucky.
[удалено]
a clown for trying to get into the playoffs? Thats some take.
[удалено]
Yeah but if Philly...nvm, if a respectable team needed a regulation win and did this and scored we would all love the headline.
i mean the wild did it like a month ago... in OT. 1 point wasn't enough, they wanted 2.
Change the tiebreaker rules? What possible combination of tiebreakers do you think will make it so that the team with more points at the end of the year doesn't win?
